Towards An Interdisciplinary Approach To Food Accessibility Research, Mohammed Rabiu Abubakari Jan 2018

Towards An Interdisciplinary Approach To Food Accessibility Research, Mohammed Rabiu Abubakari

Community and Public Affairs Doctoral Program Student Scholarship

An approximately 54.4 million people or 17.7% of the U.S population live in areas without nutritious food outlets, have low access to a vehicle and have challenges accessing a nutritious food outlet. The lack of access to nutritious food outlets mainly affects low-income residents of both urban and rural areas and remains a challenge because the deprived residents mostly depend on innutritious food outlets such as neighborhood convenience stores, which can be detrimental to their health. Researchers of varying disciplines have examined the problem of food access, however, in a piecemeal nature. This paper, therefore, critically examines research across two …

Cyber-Physical Embedded Systems With Transient Supervisory Command And Control: A Framework For Validating Safety Response In Automated Collision Avoidance Systems, Daniel K. Trembley Jan 2018

Cyber-Physical Embedded Systems With Transient Supervisory Command And Control: A Framework For Validating Safety Response In Automated Collision Avoidance Systems, Daniel K. Trembley

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The ability to design and engineer complex and dynamical Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) requires a systematic view that requires a definition of level of automation intent for the system. Since CPS covers a diverse range of systemized implementations of smart and intelligent technologies networked within a system of systems (SoS), the terms “smart” and “intelligent” is frequently used in describing systems that perform complex operations with a reduced need of a human-agent. The difference between this research and most papers in publication on CPS is that most other research focuses on the performance of the CPS rather than on the correctness …

Behavior And Personality In Heat-Shocked Lizard Hatchlings, Shelby Irwin Jan 2018

Behavior And Personality In Heat-Shocked Lizard Hatchlings, Shelby Irwin

Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Ectotherms are extremely sensitive to the temperature of their environments, due to their inability to physiologically regulate their body temperature. In fact, environmental conditions can affect ectotherms even before hatching, as incubation temperatures impact embryonic development in oviparous eggs. Specifically, increases in incubation temperature can significantly alter the morphology of the vertebrate face and brain. While previous studies have explored the associations between these morphological changes and learning and cognition in lizards, no study to date has focused on how these heat-induced craniofacial changes are associated with lizard social and exploratory behavior. Behavior (how an individual responds to a particular …

Jaina Figures And The Figuration Of Maya Social Roles: A Study Of Sama Object 64.289.94, Natalie Carrier Jan 2018

Jaina Figures And The Figuration Of Maya Social Roles: A Study Of Sama Object 64.289.94, Natalie Carrier

Undergraduate Student Research Awards

The site of Jaina island, for which Jaina figures are named, is unique in comparison to the sites where other Maya ceramic figurines have been found due to the scale and specially developed burial culture involving ceramic figurines that developed there (McVicker 2011: 211). The exceptional and artistic renderings and context for these figures from Campeche, Mexico has led to problems of looting and forgeries that have created obstacles for scholars trying to understand this body of work. A careful consideration of the stylistic features and grouping of individual figurines to determine their authenticity and meaning is therefore a step …

How Parenting Style Manifests Itself In College Students' Attitudes Of Academic Entitlement, Melissa Jewell Jan 2018

How Parenting Style Manifests Itself In College Students' Attitudes Of Academic Entitlement, Melissa Jewell

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Raising children in today’s world is no easy feat, especially when researchers closely scrutinize parents and their parenting styles. Since the early 1960’s, studying parenting styles reveals how each different style can affect children as they grow up. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the relationship between parenting styles and how they can influence adult children’s attitudes towards academic entitlement. The development of academic entitlement has been extensively studied, but not from the viewpoint of how parenting styles may have shaped these attitudes. This study utilized freshmen college students from a Northern California Community College, and …

Voxel Size And Gray Level Normalization Of Ct Radiomic Features In Lung Cancer, Muhammad Shafiq Ul Hassan, Kujtim Latifi, Geoffrey Zhang, Ghanim Ullah, Robert J. Gillies, Eduardo G. Moros

Physics Faculty Publications

Radiomic features are potential imaging biomarkers for therapy response assessment in oncology. However, the robustness of features with respect to imaging parameters is not well established. Previously identified potential imaging biomarkers were found to be intrinsically dependent on voxel size and number of gray levels (GLs) in a recent texture phantom investigation. Here, we validate the voxel size and GL in-phantom normalizations in lung tumors. Eighteen patients with non-small cell lung cancer of varying tumor volumes were analyzed. To compare with patient data, phantom scans were acquired on eight different scanners. Twenty four previously identified features were extracted from lung …

Salts Of Therapeutic Agents: Chemical, Physicochemical, And Biological Considerations, Deepak Gupta, Deepak Bhatia, Vivek Dave, Vijaykumar B. Sutariya, Sheeba Varghese Gupta Jan 2018

Salts Of Therapeutic Agents: Chemical, Physicochemical, And Biological Considerations, Deepak Gupta, Deepak Bhatia, Vivek Dave, Vijaykumar B. Sutariya, Sheeba Varghese Gupta

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

The physicochemical and biological properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are greatly affected by their salt forms. The choice of a particular salt formulation is based on numerous factors such as API chemistry, intended dosage form, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. The appropriate salt can improve the overall therapeutic and pharmaceutical effects of an API. However, the incorrect salt form can have the opposite effect, and can be quite detrimental for overall drug development. This review summarizes several criteria for choosing the appropriate salt forms, along with the effects of salt forms on the pharmaceutical properties of APIs. In addition to a …

Organellar Genome Assembly Methods And Comparative Analysis Of Horticultural Plants, Xueling Wang, Feng Cheng, Dekai Rohlsen, Changwei Bi, Chunyan Wang, Yiqing Xu, Suyun Wei, Qiaolin Ye, Tongming Yin, Ning Ye

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Although organellar genomes (including chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes) are smaller than nuclear genomes in size and gene number, organellar genomes are very important for the investigation of plant evolution and molecular ecology mechanisms. Few studies have focused on the organellar genomes of horticultural plants. Approximately 1193 chloroplast genomes and 199 mitochondrial genomes of land plants are available in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), of which only 39 are from horticultural plants. In this paper, we report an innovative and efficient method for high-quality horticultural organellar genome assembly from next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Sequencing reads were first assembled by …

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, but the overall prognosis remains disappointing especially in the advanced-stage patients. Aberration expression of Aurora kinases is tumorigenic and thus it has attracted interests as therapeutic targets in cancer treatment. Here, we investigated the proteomic response of HCC Hep3B cells to danusertib (Danu), a pan-Aurora kinase inhibitor, and then validated the proteomic results based on stable-isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC). The proteomic data identified that Danu modulated the expression of 542 protein molecules (279 up-regulated; 260 down-regulated; 3 stable). Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) and KEGG pathway …

Role Of Nutritional Factors In Pathogenesis Of Cancer, Anita Patel, Yashwant Pathak, Jayvadan Patel, Vijaykumar Sutariya

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Diet and nutrition are crucial factors throughout the complete life course in the promotion and upholding of good health. It has always been accepted that our defencelessness to infection and disease was influenced by diet and environmental as well as genetic factors. Nutrition is coming to the front position as a principle modifiable determinant of chronic disease, with scientific confirmation with time more supporting the view that alterations in diet have strong effects, equally positive as well as negative, on health throughout life. For the most part notably, nutritional adjustments may not only influence present health but also determine whether …

Therapeutic Cocktail Approach For Treatment Of Hyperhomocysteinemia In Alzheimer’S Disease, Michael Leon, Darrell Sawmiller, R. Douglas Shytle, Jun Tan

Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications

In the United States, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accompanied by substantial economic and emotional costs. During 2015, more than 15 million family members who provided care to AD patients had an estimated total cost of 221 billion dollars. Recent studies have shown that elevated total plasma levels of homocysteine (tHcy), a condition known as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), is a risk factor for AD. HHcy is associated with cognitive decline, brain atrophy, and dementia; enhances the vulnerability of neurons to oxidative injury; and damages the blood–brain barrier. Many therapeutic supplements containing vitamin B12 and folate have …

Sb Driver Analysis: A Sleeping Beauty Cancer Driver Analysis Framework For Identifying And Prioritizing Experimentally Actionable Oncogenes And Tumor Suppressors, Justin Y. Newberg, Michael A. Black, Nancy A. Jenkins, Neal G. Copeland, Karen M. Mann, Michael B. Mann

Oncologic Sciences Faculty Publications

Cancer driver prioritization for functional analysis of potential actionable therapeutic targets is a significant challenge. Meta-analyses of mutated genes across different human cancer types for driver prioritization has reaffirmed the role of major players in cancer, including KRAS, TP53 and EGFR, but has had limited success in prioritizing genes with non-recurrent mutations in specific cancer types. Sleeping Beauty (SB) insertional mutagenesis is a powerful experimental gene discovery framework to define driver genes in mouse models of human cancers. Meta-analyses of SB datasets across multiple tumor types is a potentially informative approach to prioritize drivers, and complements efforts …

Nox2 Activity Is Required In Obesity-Mediated Alteration Of Bone Remodeling, Md Mizanur Rahman, Amina El Jamali, Ganesh V. Halade, Allal Ouhtit, Haissam Abou-Saleh, Gianfranco Pintus

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Despite increasing evidence suggesting a role for NADPH oxidases (Nox) in bone pathophysiology, whether Nox enzymes contribute to obesity-mediated bone remodeling remains to be clearly elucidated. Nox2 is one of the predominant Nox enzymes expressed in the bone marrow microenvironment and is a major source of ROS generation during inflammatory processes. It is also well recognized that a high-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity, which negatively impacts bone remodeling. In this work, we investigated the effect of Nox2 loss of function on obesity-mediated alteration of bone remodeling using wild-type (WT) and Nox2-knockout (KO) mice fed with a standard lab chow diet …

Background: While Clostridium difficile gastrointestinal infection (CDI) is the most common hospital-acquired infectious disease, C. difficile bacteremia (CDB) is exceedingly rare and its risk factors, mortality rate, and modalities of treatment are not well defined. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, IRB approved, chart review of adult patients with a diagnosis of CDB admitted to our institutions from 2011 through 2017. Variables catalogued included previous antibiotic and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, co-morbid conditions, prior history of CDI, diarrhea at the time of CDB, active malignancy, and gastrointestinal (GI) disruption (e.g., perforated viscous, GI bleeding, abdominal malignancy). Treatment courses and outcomes …

Transformation Of T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma To Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma: A Report Of Two Cases, Michael Markow, Abu-Sayeef Mirza, Lia Perez, Haipeng Shao, Pedro Horna, Claudio Anasetti, Lubomir Sokol, Mohammad O. Hussaini

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Nonhepatosplenic/noncutaneous γδ peripheral T-cell lymphoma (NHNCγδ PTCL) represents a miscellaneous group of unrelated T-cell lymphomas of which only isolated cases have been reported. We describe two cases of transformation from T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma to NHNCγδ PTCL. Transformation into more aggressive disease is a rare event in T-cell lineage-derived hematologic malignancies compared to B-cell neoplasms. Nevertheless, both of our cases involved relapse as PTCL manifested with skin involvement and an overt shift from blastic morphology to large granular leukemia-like mature T cells. Among other notable molecular characteristics, expression of immature markers such as TdT was lost in both cases. Based …

Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni Jan 2018

Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni

KIP Articles

Classically, epigene processes (unconfined and gravity driven from surface features) were considered the principal means by which caves and karst features were formed. In recent years, the theory of hypogene speleogenesis (confined and hydrostatic pressure driven, independent of adjacent surfaces) has gained both scientific and public support as a valid, and widespread mechanism for karst development in varied terrains. This has led to a revolution in thought related to karst processes and the broad implications of hypogene speleogenesis throughout North America, especially in Texas. As karst scientists and cavers began to view caves and karst processes in light of potential …

Auditory Opportunity And Visual Constraint Enabled The Evolution Of Echolocation In Bats, Jeneni Thiagavel, Clément Cechetto, Sharlene E. Santana Jan 2018

Auditory Opportunity And Visual Constraint Enabled The Evolution Of Echolocation In Bats, Jeneni Thiagavel, Clément Cechetto, Sharlene E. Santana

KIP Articles

Substantial evidence now supports the hypothesis that the common ancestor of bats was nocturnal and capable of both powered flight and laryngeal echolocation. This scenario entails a parallel sensory and biomechanical transition from a nonvolant, vision-reliant mammal to one capable of sonar and flight. Here we consider anatomical constraints and opportunities that led to a sonar rather than vision-based solution. We show that bats’ common ancestor had eyes too small to allow for successful aerial hawking of flying insects at night, but an auditory brain design sufficient to afford echolocation. Further, we find that among extant predatory bats (all of …

The Vanishing Body Of Disability Law: Power And The Making Of The Impaired Subject, Jonas-Sébastien Beaudry Jan 2018

The Vanishing Body Of Disability Law: Power And The Making Of The Impaired Subject, Jonas-Sébastien Beaudry

Canadian Journal of Family Law

The influence of disability studies on legal scholarship is most visible in the social model, which claims that people are not disabled because of their bodily impairments, but by society in its refusal to accommodate their impairments.

However, a modest but growing discourse within disability studies argues that the notion of impairment, in addition to disability, is socially constructed. This article aims to bring this problematized conception of impairment, informed by Michel Foucault’s conception of power, into contact with legal scholarship. Judith Mosoff’s sensibility about the role of impairments in the legal treatment of disabled people illustrates this critical outlook, …

Quebec's Filiation Regime, The Roy Report'S Recommendations, And The 'Interest Of The Child', Régine Tremblay

Canadian Journal of Family Law

This article describes Quebec’s filiation regime and explains some of the Roy Report’s recommendations to reform parent-child relationships in Quebec. While this report is unlikely to lead to legislative change, it represents an important insight into issues animating family law in Quebec today. The Roy Report anchors filiation and family law to the ‘interest of the child’, a notion likely different from the best interests of the child in common law. The article offers some critical and comparative analysis of current and proposed rules. It makes this lesser known area of Quebec civil law accessible in English and to common …

(Some) Mothers Know Best: A Case Comment On Mm V Tb And The Plight Of Indigenous Mothers In Child Welfare And Adoption Proceedings, Catherine Wang

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Over time, courts have come to acknowledge the significance of Indigenous identity when deciding custody disputes, but they continue to struggle with how much consideration should be given to the broader history involved, which can leave Indigenous mothers particularly disadvantaged in family law proceedings. Not only do Indigenous mothers have to contend with the law’s general assumptions and expectations about mothers, they also have to endure the courts’ often limited ability to situate mothers’ individual actions in the wider context of structural barriers erected by government and societal forces. A close examination of the recent British Columbia Court of Appeal …
