Workshopping A Workshop: Collaborative Design In Educational Development, Eleanor V. H. Vandegrift, Amy B. Mulnix, Jennifer R. Yates, S. Raj Chaudhury
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Working remotely and collaboratively, our interdisciplinary team created an educational development workshop, Thinking Skills for the 21st Century: Teaching for Transfer, in which participants not only experience, apply, and reflect on teaching across educational settings but also connect this work to principles that have been demonstrated by learning science to support the transfer of knowledge. We used backward design to develop the workshop and evidence-based pedagogies in its implementation. We facilitated the workshop at two different national meetings for distinct audiences and also as part of an on-campus faculty development program. Here, we report on the workshop development and revision, …

An Analysis Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Current Evaluation Systems In The State Of Indiana: Understanding Which Components Are Most Beneficial In Building Teacher Capacity And Increasing Student Academic Growth, Steven Bruce Bair
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine what Indiana K-12 public school classroom teachers believe are the critical components of new evaluation systems in increasing their self-instructional capacity, which research (e.g., Hattie, 2003) indicated should lead to increased student achievement in their classrooms. Independent variables for this study included the respondents grade-level teaching assignment and years teaching experience. The dependent variables in this study included the respondents composite scores from four areas—collaborative feedback, pedagogy, embedded professional development, and performance-based compensation. There were five statistically significant findings from the study. First, the survey data indicated that Indiana public school …

The Antisaccade Eye-Tracking Deficit As An Endophenotype Of Schizophrenia: Results From A Hypothetically Psychosis-Prone Sample, Elizabeth A. Smith
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some of the earliest studies of schizophrenia have included observations that cognitive deficits feature prominently in the disorder. Over time, models of schizophrenia development have expanded this idea to note that cognitive deficits actually emerge prior to illness onset and could confer incremental risk in addition to genetic and environmental insults. As such, these deficits may be thought of as an indicator of schizophrenia liability. This concept relates to the theoretical models informing the current study. The first is that of the endophenotype, which was first fully described by Gottesman and Gould (2003). The endophenotype is an indicator of genetic …

Using Infographics To Educate Stem Students About Interpersonal Communication, Anna Ziesak
Using Infographics To Educate Stem Students About Interpersonal Communication, Anna Ziesak
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The purpose of this study is to ascertain the viability of infographics in educating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics students about interpersonal communication skills. To determine if infographics are viable tools, the study used two surveys to gather information. The first survey was formatted as a needs assessment and revealed three areas with which STEM students wanted help: presentations, group projects, and communication. Three infographics were created to address these concerns, and a second survey was used to assess these infographics. Results from the second survey indicate that STEM students learned new information from the infographics and wanted to see …

Calcium Alginate Capsules Encapsulating Rejuvenator As Healing System For Asphalt Mastic, S. Xu, Amir Tabakovic, X. Liu, E. Schlangen
Research and Innovation - Articles
Researchers have demonstrated that the rejuvenator encapsulation method is a promising autonomic self-healing approach for asphalt pavements, where by the self-healing system improves the healing capacity of an asphalt pavement mix. However, potentially high environmental risk via leaching of hazardous chemicals such as melamine formaldehyde renders the technology unsuitable for widespread use in road design. This paper explores the potential for the use of more environmentally friendly and economically viable rejuvenator encapsulation method, where the calcium alginate is used as rejuvenator encapsulation material. The capsule morphology and microstructure were studied using the Microscopy and X-ray tomography. Capsules thermal and mechanical …

From Doldrums To Progressing Knowledge: Identifying Stifling Issues In Criminological Theory Building And Testing, Christopher M. Campbell, Melanie-Angela Neuilly
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the explanation of crime, although each social science has a primary focus of theoretical development, there are a number of areas where disciplines unwittingly parallel one another. Such parallel development promotes unnecessary competition among theories and prevents them from progressing knowledge. Additionally, theorists often discard related concepts presented by other disciplines, if they considered at all, which is indicative of an imbalance in the disciplinary frame of reference (e.g., psychology over sociology). Such imbalance and lack of cross-referencing impedes the ability of theories to adequately explain and understand criminality. This paper revisits how the theorizing of crime may benefit …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drinking water safety is increasingly perceived as one of the top global environmental issues. Plankton has been commonly used as a bioindicator for water quality in lakes and reservoirs. Recently, DNA sequencing technology has been applied to bioassessment. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of the 16S and 18S rRNA high throughput sequencing method (HTS) and the traditional optical microscopy method (TOM) in the bioassessment of drinking water quality. Five stations reflecting different habitats and hydrological conditions in Danjiangkou Reservoir, one of the largest drinking water reservoirs in Asia, were sampled May 2016. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis showed …

Mathematics Education (Research) Liberated From Teaching And Learning: Towards (The Future Of) Doing Mathematics, Jean-Francois Maheux, Jerome Proulx
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Now, what do you make of that? We want to discuss mathematics education, and research in mathematics education (we don’t really need to specify, hence the parenthesis). And we want to address teaching and learning (mathematics, but we skipped the parenthesis this time around because we used the word just before) in terms of not-being. You will notice, however, the provocative presence of “liberated”, a strong verb which alludes to the idea of freedom while acknowledging certain constraints: captivity, dependence, and even liability. Its selection was a bold choice. But having made such a suggestive statement (without actually saying things …

Disordering Mathematical Identity Stories Through Dramatic Filmed Parody ‘Math Therapy’, Kelly Pickard-Smith
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The stereotypical mathematical identity story of the ‘mad mathematician’ (consumed by mathematics and socially inept) is widely reported as problematic to understanding what it means to be mathematical, and to engaging students in mathematics. This problem is explored in the improvisational parody ‘Math Therapy’, which occurred during my filming of ‘Performatics’(https://vimeo.com/147449932); an Arts Based Research (ABR), using filmed-drama. ‘Performed’ and informed by the lived experiences of three post graduate students studying courses with mathematical content, their mathematical experiences are juxtaposed with those of a socially imagined ‘mad mathematician’ in a fictional, generic therapy context entitled ‘Math Therapy’. The ABR facilitated …

Within the liver, Plasmodium sporozoites traverse cells searching for a "suitable" hepatocyte, invading these cells through a process that results in the formation of a parasitophorous vacuole (PV), within which the parasite undergoes intracellular replication as a liver stage. It was previously established that two members of the Plasmodium s48/45 protein family, P36 and P52, are essential for productive invasion of host hepatocytes by sporozoites as their simultaneous deletion results in growth-arrested parasites that lack a PV. Recent studies point toward a pathway of entry possibly involving the interaction of P36 with hepatocyte receptors EphA2, CD81, and SR-B1. However, the …

Cytoscape is the premiere platform for interactive analysis, integration and visualization of network data. While Cytoscape itself delivers much basic functionality, it relies on community-written apps to deliver specialized functions and analyses. To date, Cytoscape's CyREST feature has allowed researchers to write workflows that call basic Cytoscape functions, but provides no access to its high value app-based functions. With Cytoscape Automation, workflows can now call apps that have been upgraded to expose their functionality. This article collection is a resource to assist readers in quickly and economically leveraging such apps in reproducible workflows that scale independently to large data sets …

Advances in the surgical management of the axilla in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, especially those with node positive disease at diagnosis, have led to changes in practice and more judicious use of axillary lymph node dissection that may minimize morbidity from surgery. However, there is still significant confusion about how to optimally manage the axilla, resulting in variation among practices. From the viewpoint of drug development, assessment of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy remains paramount and appropriate assessment of residual disease-the primary endpoint of many drug therapy trials in the neoadjuvant setting-is critical. Therefore decreasing the variability, especially in a …

Microbial community structure is highly sensitive to natural (e.g., drought, temperature, fire) and anthropogenic (e.g., heavy metal exposure, land-use change) stressors. However, despite an immense amount of data generated, systematic, cross-environment analyses of microbiome responses to multiple disturbances are lacking. Here, we present the Microbiome Stress Project, an open-access database of environmental and host-associated 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing studies collected to facilitate cross-study analyses of microbiome responses to stressors. This database will comprise published and unpublished datasets re-processed from the raw sequences into exact sequence variants using our standardized computational pipeline. Our database will provide insight into general response patterns …

Assessing Patterns Of Barn Owl Tyto Alba Occupancy From Call Broadcast Surveys, Tempe Regan, Christopher J.W. Mcclure, James R. Belthoff
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Owing to habitat loss, changes in farming practices, urbanization, and high mortality through vehicle collisions, barn owls Tyto alba are a species of conservation concern in portions of their range. This species can be secretive and difficult to survey, particularly away from breeding sites, so factors related to barn owl occurrence often remain unknown. We conducted nighttime broadcast surveys for barn owls during the early- and post-breeding seasons and used an occupancy modeling framework to understand how factors related to landcover, landscape features, and human development related to occupancy in southern Idaho, USA. We also assessed the effectiveness of using …
