Purpose: Progenitor cells of the limbal epithelium reside in a discrete area peripheral to the more differentiated corneal epithelium and maintain tissue homeostasis. What regulates the limbal-corneal epithelial boundary is a major unanswered question. Ephrin-A1 ligand is enriched in the limbal epithelium, whereas EphA2 receptor is concentrated in the corneal epithelium. This reciprocal pattern led us to assess the role of ephrin-A1 and EphA2 in limbal-corneal epithelial boundary organization.
Methods: EphA2-expressing corneal epithelial cells engineered to express ephrin-A1 were used to study boundary formation in vitro in a manner that mimicked the relative abundance of these juxtamembrane signaling proteins in …

PURPOSE: The associations of physical activity and television (TV) viewing with mortality risk among individuals with hematologic malignancies remain unclear.
METHODS: We examined the relations of physical activity and TV viewing time before and after diagnosis with mortality among 5182 U.S. adults aged 50-71 years from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study cohort who survived a first primary hematologic cancer between 1995-1996 and 2011.
RESULTS: For the pre- and post-diagnosis analyses, we confirmed 2606 and 613 deaths respectively. In multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression models, comparing high (≥4 hrs/wk) versus low (/wk) activity levels, pre-diagnosis physical activity was associated with …

Sexual violence is associated with increased risk of HIV acquisition/transmission in women. Forced sex can result in physical trauma to the reproductive tract as well as severe psychological distress. However, immuno-biological mechanisms linking sexual violence and HIV susceptibility are incompletely understood. Using the Women's Interagency HIV Study repository, a total of 77 women were selected to form 4 groups, stratified by HIV serostatus, in the following categories: 1) no sexual abuse history and low depressive symptom score (below clinically significant cut-off, scores
A Multi-Domain Approach To Prevention And Reversal Of Cognitive Decline, Chanah Oberlander
A Multi-Domain Approach To Prevention And Reversal Of Cognitive Decline, Chanah Oberlander
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Incidence of dementia has been on the rise over the last few decades and it is projected that more than 130 million people will be affected by dementia worldwide by 2050. The underlying cause remains incompletely determined, and despite numerous clinical trials, no drug to date has proven effective in preventing or reversing symptoms of cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s disease. The amyloid hypothesis as a basis for drug development of Alzheimer’s disease has thus far proven to be ineffective, suggesting that perhaps a new approach is required. New studies have shown the efficacy of a multi-domain approach which targets …

Exercise Can Potentially Cure Parkinson’S Disease: A Comprehensive Review, Ilana Tokarsky
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease that negatively affects many American lives. It is characterized by the degeneration of dopamine-secreting neurons in the Substantia Nigra Pars Compacta (SNpc). Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease lack motor coordination and experience severe motor impairments. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment method available that can successfully cure the disease. In fact, all of the mainstream available treatments only eliminate some PD symptoms, and they cause many negative side effects. Although nontraditional, exercise is a side effect free treatment method that can potentially slow the progression of the disease and alleviate some symptoms. …

Mosquito Abatement Monitoring: West Nile In Los Angeles County, Elisa Gonzalez
Mosquito Abatement Monitoring: West Nile In Los Angeles County, Elisa Gonzalez
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
West Nile virus (WNV) has become established across the U.S. with heightened activity causing significant human illness. Monitoring methods to predict the risk of human infection are urgently need to initiate timely preventative measures and justify the expense of implementing costly or unpopular control measures, such as aerial spraying or curfews. This research outlines several ways to further improve the productive power of monitoring mosquitoes. These results demonstrate that mosquito monitoring provides a valuable public health tool for assessing the risk of human arboviral infections, allocating limited public health resources, and justifying emergency control actions.

Some Aspects Of Woodpecker Predation On The Spruce Beetle In Colorado, Steven R. Helm
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Historic data on predation by woodpeckers, primarily the American three-toed woodpecker (Picoides dorsalis), on epidemic levels of the spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) in Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) forests of Colorado are analyzed in this report. Significant differences in beetle consumption by male and female woodpeckers as well as seasonal differences in beetle consumption by woodpeckers in general were discovered through statistical analyses. Potential ecological explanations for observed differences are discussed.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Keratins extracted from human hair have emerged as a promising biomaterial for various biomedical applications, partly due to their wide availability, low cost, minimal immune response, and the potential to engineer autologous tissue constructs. However, the fabrication of keratin-based scaffolds typically relies on limited crosslinking mechanisms, such as via physical interactions or disulfide bond formation, which are time-consuming and result in relatively poor mechanical strength and stability. Here, we report the preparation of photocrosslinkable keratin-polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogels via the thiol-norbornene “click” reaction, which can be formed within one minute upon irradiation of visible light. The resulting keratin-PEG hydrogels showed …

Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Increasing the proportion of adults in the United States (U.S.) who engage in physical activity is a national priority. Only 29% met the aerobic guideline, 3% met the muscle strengthening guideline only, and 21% met the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. Individually oriented physical activity interventions can be intensive and have large effects; however, changes may be temporary unless supportive environments and health-promoting policies are in place. A variety of strategies are required to get and keep people physically active.

To Study Abroad Or Not To Study Abroad: That Is The Stem Question, Matthew A. Witenstein, Janel Henriksen Hastings
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
As more science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students consider studying abroad, it is critical for researchers and student affairs educators to know more about how students engage with the study abroad process and make decisions about whether to participate or not. This qualitative study examined the decision-making process in which STEM students engaged regarding study abroad at a STEM liberal arts college. An organizational culture lens was utilized to make meaning of the formal study abroad decision-making process within a deeply entrenched institutional bubble that permeates all college facets and stakeholders. Focus groups engaged both participants who studied abroad …

Themes Which Shaped My Professional Journey, Jusuf Salih
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
By the emergence of the new conditions of fast communication among diverse communities today, we are witnessing many changes in social, political, economic, and other aspects of modern societies. With mass communication and social media, the barriers among nations are falling, thus giving opportunities for openness and better understanding — but also to misleading and deceptive information. Therefore, these changes demand redefinition and reevaluation of the newly emerged conditions and accordingly adjustments to the new circumstances. Issues related to religion, ethnicity, and nationality are particularly complex and sensitive matters that can bridge but also divide people; therefore, they require thorough …
