Mesotocin Influences Pinyon Jay Prosociality, J. F. Duque, W. Leichner, H. Ahmann, Jeffrey R. Stevens Jan 2018

Mesotocin Influences Pinyon Jay Prosociality, J. F. Duque, W. Leichner, H. Ahmann, Jeffrey R. Stevens

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Many species exhibit prosocial behavior , in which one individual’s actions benefit another individual, often without an immediate benefit to itself. The neuropeptide oxytocin is an important hormonal mechanism influencing prosociality in mammals, but it is unclear whether the avian homologue mesotocin plays a similar functional role in birds. Here, we experimentally tested prosociality in pinyon jays (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), a highly social corvid species that spontaneously shares food with others. First, we measured prosocial preferences in a prosocial choice task with two different pay-off distributions: Prosocial trials delivered food to both the subject and either an empty cage …

Larval Nutrient Effects On Dissemination And Horizontal Transmission Potential Of Zika Virus In Mosquito Aedes Aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) (Linnaeus 1762), Andrew S. Paige Jan 2018

Larval Nutrient Effects On Dissemination And Horizontal Transmission Potential Of Zika Virus In Mosquito Aedes Aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) (Linnaeus 1762), Andrew S. Paige

Theses & ETDs

The container mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the major vector of several emerging arboviruses affecting human health. Adult mosquito life history traits are largely determined by factors of the larval environment, including the composition of nutrients provided by detritus within the system. Within container systems, animal (dead insects) and plant detritus form the basal nutrients for food webs that support mosquito growth and development. Animal detritus is high in nitrogen, a limiting growth factor for organisms. Plant detritus is low in nitrogen, making it less nutritious. Here we investigate how heterogeneity in carbon and nitrogen affect Zika virus vector competency of …

Volumetric Histological Characterization Of Optic Nerve Degeneration Using Modified Clear, Unobstructed Brain Imaging Cocktails And Computational Analysis (Mcubic), April Myers

Theses & ETDs

Tissue clearing technologies such as CUBIC (clear, unobstructed brain imaging cocktails and computational analysis) have the potential to greatly improve the accuracy with which the three-dimensional structure of biological tissues can be depicted. In the present study, a modified CUBIC protocol (mCUBIC) was applied to full-length fixed optic nerves (ON) of mice having undergone repeated mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) or a sham treatment (rsham). Direct fluorescent staining and immunohistochemistry was used to assess inflammatory and degenerative activity in the tissue by confocal microscopy. It was demonstrated that mCUBIC tissue retained quantifiable microstructural and morphological characteristics, was amenable to immunostaining, …

Exploring Data And Visualization In Quantitative Journalism: A Case Study Depicting The 1975'S Success Story, Caitlyn Ralph Jan 2018

Exploring Data And Visualization In Quantitative Journalism: A Case Study Depicting The 1975'S Success Story, Caitlyn Ralph

Theses & ETDs

As a reaction to society's heightened digitization, journalism has taken a "quantitative turn" [1] in order to parse through increasingly-available complex information. This quantitative turn is largely concentrated on data journalism. Yet, there is a definitional struggle surrounding data journalism and its unique derivatives. By combining literature on quantitative journalism, visual storytelling, and visualization, more stable definitions for the developing field are presented, allowing for its implications to be precisely considered inside and outside the newsroom. Focus is then placed on the visualization-heavy derivative of data journalism, which, through the previous taxonomic discussion, is labeled as narrative visualization. Effective design …

Evaluating The Effects Of Cover Crops On Soil Organic Matter In Wheat-Fallow Rotation Schemes Near Pendleton, Oregon, Zoe Heuermann Jan 2018

Evaluating The Effects Of Cover Crops On Soil Organic Matter In Wheat-Fallow Rotation Schemes Near Pendleton, Oregon, Zoe Heuermann

Theses & ETDs

The biological compounds in the soil that are integral to the cycling of nutrients and management of other soil properties are collectively known as soil organic matter (SOM). Cover crops, plants grown in addition to the primary cash crops to help maintain the agroecosystem, have been reported to build up SOM under some conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cover crops in rotation with winter wheat and fallow on SOM fractions over three years at the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center near Pendleton, OR. In June 2017, soil was sampled from 30 plots randomly …

The Effects Of Brefeldin A On Dictyostelium Discoideum In Single And Co-Culture Environments, Spencer Hills Jan 2018

The Effects Of Brefeldin A On Dictyostelium Discoideum In Single And Co-Culture Environments, Spencer Hills

Theses & ETDs

Cells of some species of slime mold, as well as the model amoeba Entamoeba invadens, are attracted to the furrowing region of dividing cells in telophase, physically assisting neighboring cells with cytokinesis in a process known as cytokinetic midwifery. However, little is known with respect to possible inter-species interactions or chemotactic behavior related to the cytokinetic midwifery phenomenon. In an attempt to stimulate cytokinetic midwifery, brefeldin A (BFA), a secretory pathway inhibitor and known inhibitor of cytokinesis in Caenorhabditis elegans, was applied to experimental agar plates upon which the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum was cultured, and cells were monitored for …

The Effects Of Repeated Racial Discrimination On The Mental And Physical Wellbeing Of Black Americans, Jada Bennett Jan 2018

The Effects Of Repeated Racial Discrimination On The Mental And Physical Wellbeing Of Black Americans, Jada Bennett

Theses & ETDs

This paper reviews the literature on the short and long term effects of perceived racial discrimination on the mental and physical health of Black Americans. I discuss the existing literature which establishes racism as a form of psychosocial stress, and address the psychological coping mechanisms associated with perceived discrimination. I discuss the neuroendocrine processes of the stress response and discuss the role of environment in the stress response, and link certain health detriments to prolonged exposure to stress. I view racism in a historical context to make connections between the trauma of slavery and lingering disparities in health and environment …

Beyond Monoamine Modulation: A Systematic Review Of Off-Label Ketamine For Treatment Resistant Depression, Hana Karina Arraya Jan 2018

Beyond Monoamine Modulation: A Systematic Review Of Off-Label Ketamine For Treatment Resistant Depression, Hana Karina Arraya

Theses & ETDs

Major depressive disorder is a debilitating and chronic mental illness that impacts hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Depression is a treatable condition, but many patients are resistant to antidepressants despite multiple trials of adequate dose and duration. After accumulating evidence suggesting that the glutamatergic system plays a role in the pathology of depression, Berman and colleagues assessed ketamine, an anesthetic drug with mechanisms of action very different to conventional antidepressants, for its potential antidepressant properties and found that it was significantly more effective than placebo 72 hours after administration (Berman et al., 2000). Although no large scale clinical studies …

The Inexorable Picture Of Language: Grammar, Meaning, Function, And An Interdisciplinary Upheaval Of Paradigms In Theoretical Linguistics, Sabrina Finn Jan 2018

The Inexorable Picture Of Language: Grammar, Meaning, Function, And An Interdisciplinary Upheaval Of Paradigms In Theoretical Linguistics, Sabrina Finn

Theses & ETDs

What is the nature of language? For more than 60 years, the answer to this question has been drawn from Noam Chomsky’s theory of linguistics, which treats the usage of linguistic structures in a speech community as irrelevant to its purpose, acquisition, and form. But by contrast, contemporary research in philosophy, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics suggests that the purpose, acquisition, and form of linguistic structures are necessarily linked to language’s function. In this project, I assert that functionality is a core property of language, and that the problems faced by the transformationalgenerative theories of language are the result of …

The Sociopsychological History Of The “Self-Hatred” Image In Black African Americans Before & During The Civil Rights Movement, Lorraine Cruz Jan 2018

The Sociopsychological History Of The “Self-Hatred” Image In Black African Americans Before & During The Civil Rights Movement, Lorraine Cruz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uncovers the embeddedness of US western conceptual systems and psychological research, on Black studies from the early 1930’s to late 1960’s. Research on the Black psyche during this time (1950’s) reflected assimilationist racial ideologies of Blackness held by the State. As this relationship is explored, conceptual & methodological flaws are displayed as contributors of the “self-hate” or “damaged” image concluded from Black identity research. The construction of the “damaged black psyche” thesis is examined through its role in the overturning of the “separate but equal” doctrine in the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board Education of Topeka. Ultimately …

The following organisms were observed during surveying: Phyllodactylus palmeus, Hemidactylus frenatus, Anolis allisoni, Iguana iguana, Basiliscus vittatus, Ctenosaura melanosterna, Norops lemurinus, Oxybelis aeneus, and Boa constrictor imperator. Photographic …

Acquired Characteristics Of Epigenetics, Cassandra Ratzlaff Jan 2018

Acquired Characteristics Of Epigenetics, Cassandra Ratzlaff

Theses & ETDs

The world of genetics is always changing. Today, current techniques in genetics allow for screening of genetic disorders, mapping of gene functions, and gene editing. Genetics explains heredity and variations of inherited characteristics. A species is said to have evolved if there is a change in the genetic composition that has been inherited through multiple generations. This does not however, explain if genes can be altered and passed on through a single inheritance. Epigenetics is an emerging field of study that describes how genes can be turned “off” and “on” by external factors in a single organism and do not …

Mutating Rna Helicase A Using Crispr-Cas9 Methods In C. Elegans, Najla F. Fawwaz Jan 2018

Mutating Rna Helicase A Using Crispr-Cas9 Methods In C. Elegans, Najla F. Fawwaz

Theses & ETDs

Many aspects have not yet been completely understood about rha-1 in C. elegans. In this thesis study, we attempted to build a CRISPR-Cas9 targeting vector to fuse GFP to the C-terminus of the rha-1 gene with the aim to acquire broader knowledge of the expression and functions of rha-1 in C. elegans. The CRISPR-Cas9 targeting vectors tagged by GFP at the C-terminus of the rha-1 gene were constructed using multiple DNA assembly tools such as: SapTrap Assembly, Gibson Assembly and Hi-Fi Assembly. Together, the obtained findings confirmed that the attempts to generate these CRISPR-Cas9 targeting vectors were unsuccessful due to …

The Relationship Between The Feeding Habits And Behavior Of Cyphoma Gibbosum (Linnaeus, 1758) And The Spread Of Aspergillus Sydowii (Thom & Church, 1926) Affecting Gorgonia Ventalina (Linnaeus, 1758) At Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, Kristin Spoto Jan 2018

The Relationship Between The Feeding Habits And Behavior Of Cyphoma Gibbosum (Linnaeus, 1758) And The Spread Of Aspergillus Sydowii (Thom & Church, 1926) Affecting Gorgonia Ventalina (Linnaeus, 1758) At Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, Kristin Spoto

Theses & ETDs

Coral reefs are some of the Earth’s most highly diverse ecosystems, housing millions of organisms. The organisms most important to coral reefs second to the reef building coral are the soft corals, which provide a source of food, habitat, nutrient cycling as well as other benefits to the organisms living on the reefs. These soft corals, including gorgonians, are sensitive and experiencing an increasing rate of disease and mortality worldwide. One such disease is a pathogenic fungus called Aspergillus sydowii and has seen to be prominent amongst Gorgonia ventalina, the sea fan. Mechanisms of fungal infection are not certain at …

From The Cradle To Nirvana: Caregiver Parenting Styles In Childhood And Dispositional Mindfulness In Adulthood, Kira Thoenes Jan 2018

From The Cradle To Nirvana: Caregiver Parenting Styles In Childhood And Dispositional Mindfulness In Adulthood, Kira Thoenes

Theses & ETDs

Parenting practices can strongly shape a child’s personality and behavior well into adulthood. Mindfulness as a trait, the tendency to focus attention on the present moment in a nonjudgmental way, has been associated with positive mental health outcomes, yet little is known about the potential impact parenting practices in childhood may have on an individual’s mindfulness throughout adulthood. The current study collected an online sample of 217 participants to assess the relationship between participant mindfulness and the parenting styles of participants’ primary and secondary caregivers during childhood. Mindfulness was assessed using the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), with higher scores indicating …

Impact Of Urbanization On Salinity Of Sarasota Bay Tidal Creeks, Claudia Vila Jan 2018

Impact Of Urbanization On Salinity Of Sarasota Bay Tidal Creeks, Claudia Vila

Theses & ETDs

Urbanization of watersheds causes more runoff to be discharged into surrounding estuaries. Some studies have connected increased discharge to decreased salinity in the estuaries. Salinity is a very important characteristic of these ecosystems, because it can influence biotic distribution. The Sarasota Bay watershed is highly urbanized and stormwater runoff is an established consequence of development. In this study, I looked at the impact of urbanization on salinity in Sarasota Bay, Florida. To detect variation through space and through time, I used spatial data that indicates percent imperviousness, salinity data collected at the mouths of each tidal creek, and time series …

A Clove A Day Keeps The Dentist Away? A Proposal To Investigate The Efficacy Of Natural Quorum Quenching Compounds On Streptococcus Mutans Biofilms, Alexis P. Pujol Jan 2018

A Clove A Day Keeps The Dentist Away? A Proposal To Investigate The Efficacy Of Natural Quorum Quenching Compounds On Streptococcus Mutans Biofilms, Alexis P. Pujol

Theses & ETDs

The formation of microbial biofilms on human teeth, also known as dental plaque, can lead to periodontal diseases and dental caries. The current treatments for these ailments are costly and inaccessible for many people, but if left untreated, these diseases can lead to serious illnesses. Bacteria within a biofilm communicate using quorum sensing (QS) and utilize this method to count themselves for controlled gene expression. In recent years, there has been significant research on how to inhibit this inter-bacterial communication in a process called, quorum quenching (QQ). Molecules that closely resemble the QS molecules produced and accepted by bacteria can …

Jewish Conversion, Intragroup Stigma, And Antisemitism: A Regional And Community Analysis, Arlee B. Boyett Jan 2018

Jewish Conversion, Intragroup Stigma, And Antisemitism: A Regional And Community Analysis, Arlee B. Boyett

Theses & ETDs

The topic of Jewish conversion has remained virtually unstudied within the psychology of religion, especially within the context of antisemitism. In this study, 272 participants were given several scales that measured experiences of antisemitism, ethnic identity, religious and generalized demographics, and, if applicable, shame regarding their status as a convert. The data showed that converts do not experience antisemitism differently than born-Jews, that regionally, the South and West have higher ratings of antisemitism than the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-West, that congregation size was not related to severity of the experiences of antisemitism or convert shame, and that higher levels of convert …

Neonicotinoids: A Comparative Pesticide Policy Analysis Between The European Union And The United States, Tara Olson Jan 2018

Neonicotinoids: A Comparative Pesticide Policy Analysis Between The European Union And The United States, Tara Olson

Theses & ETDs

Neonicotinoids are an insecticide group, introduced in the 1980s, as a more effective method to combat insect pests. Within the past decade, unexpected side-effects of neonicotinoids have been discovered. The most prominent species that has shown negative side effects is the European honey bee, Apis mellifera. By targeting the nervous system, chronic, sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids causes behavioral changes and neurological damage, leading to eventual mortality in this species. The United States and the European Union are both affected by the loss of this globally essential pollinator. However, they have taken diverging approaches to manage the risk to this pollinator …

Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale Jan 2018

Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale

Theses & ETDs

The philosophy of food is an expansive topic, but most people recognize it for its contributions to ethics rather than aesthetics. Examining the potential categorization of food as art leads to a fuller understanding of art on its own terms, especially within a twentieth/twenty-first century, post-Duchampian context. Conceptual art in particular builds on a framework that espouses the concept as a medium, rejects a purely visual aesthetic, and blurs lines of form and content. Emphasizing context, conceptual artists--some of whom work with food as a medium--reject most of the categories that exclude food from art. In sketching a philosophically-informed art …

Audible Sound Treatment Of Chlorella Vulgaris Beijerinck (1890) Has No Effect On Growth Rate, Nathan Burnaman Jan 2018

Audible Sound Treatment Of Chlorella Vulgaris Beijerinck (1890) Has No Effect On Growth Rate, Nathan Burnaman

Theses & ETDs

Microalgae, a group of single celled or simple multicellular organisms responsible for a significant portion of the world’s primary productivity, have the potential to be utilized for sustainable and potentially remediative production of fuel, food, and medicine. Recent experiments have shown that treating microalgae with sound can enhance growth and lipid production. Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga of interest in multiple industries, was cultured with continuous single frequency sound stimulation at 2200 Hz to observe changes in growth rates. Sound-treated alga cultures showed no significant difference in growth compared to control cultures. The literature on microalgal applications, as well as sound …

Novel Antibiotic Design: Synthesis And Optimization Of N-Heterocyclic Oxazolidinones, David J. Bruch Jan 2018

Novel Antibiotic Design: Synthesis And Optimization Of N-Heterocyclic Oxazolidinones, David J. Bruch

Theses & ETDs

Over the past few decades there have been very few breakthrough discoveries in the field of antibiotics. Designing an effective drug is not a simple task, and requires a long and grueling selection and optimization process. The analogue approach is a very effective method in drug design and was applied to the N-aryl-oxazolidinone moiety in an effort to explore the structure activity relationship among this series. Dr. Tucker proposed a heterocyclic aromatic species as a substituent for placement at the N-aryl site of the oxazolidinone moiety. Specifically, we hoped to replace the N-phenyl “B-ring” in the active linezolid oxazolidinone core …

“Together For Liberation, Together For Our Nation”: An Examination Of Feminist Literary Practice’S Navigation Of Contested Membership In Palestinian Nationalist Discourse, Leen Alfatafta Jan 2018

“Together For Liberation, Together For Our Nation”: An Examination Of Feminist Literary Practice’S Navigation Of Contested Membership In Palestinian Nationalist Discourse, Leen Alfatafta

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to understand how feminist literary practice can navigate contested membership within Palestinian Nationalist discourse. In particular, I am interested in the way the content of Sawt-Al-Nisa (Voice of Women) magazine responds to the questioning of Palestinian women’s nationalist credentials during the Second Intifada on the basis of their lack of participation in the militarized resistance. Employing qualitative content analysis, I examine the ways Palestinian women imagine themselves as nationalist actors, how self-definition tools are employed to navigate contested membership, and whether that can qualify as resistance from the margins. Two themes emerged from the …

To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate: An Overview Of The Immune Response And The Vaccine Debate, Noriám Roman Jan 2018

To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate: An Overview Of The Immune Response And The Vaccine Debate, Noriám Roman

Theses & ETDs

Immunizations have had an impact on public health. They have decreased the morbidity and mortality of various diseases. Immunizations act on innate immunity to activate the adaptive immune system and create immune memory. Although immunizations have clearly decreased the incidence of disease, some people who question the safety and efficacy of vaccines. I discuss the various aspects of the immune system, explored the different types of immunizations that are available, and analyzed the anti-vaccine debate. After weighing benefits and harms, it can be concluded that vaccines are safe for most people. There are a few exceptions where some patients have …

Kinetic Characterization Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Lactate Dehydrogenase, Maria Simmerling Jan 2018

Kinetic Characterization Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Lactate Dehydrogenase, Maria Simmerling

Theses & ETDs

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a metabolic, cytoplasmic protein that is found in nearly all living organisms. LDH catalyzes the interconversion of pyruvate to lactate, while generating nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) from NAD+ (and vice versa). In humans, there are two predominant LDH genes that give rise two subunits, subunit M and subunit H, that produce five isozymes. The LDH-H4 isozyme is made from four of the H subunits and is found in heart muscle. LDH-H4 is referred to as LDH-1 in this study. This study uses Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model organism to further characterize LDH-1, as C. …

Prey Selection Of Octopus Vulgaris Cuvier 1797: An Analysis Of Individuals And Their Cohabitants In Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, 2017, Meaghan Klos Jan 2018

Prey Selection Of Octopus Vulgaris Cuvier 1797: An Analysis Of Individuals And Their Cohabitants In Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, 2017, Meaghan Klos

Theses & ETDs

Octopus vulgaris occupies a critical role in its ecosystem, as it is an important food source, ecosystem engineer, and a generalist predator. Understanding diet, especially diet shifts, is crucial to make predictions about ecosystem health. In addition to diet, octopuses can have a range of cohabiters in their dens that scavenge from the midden, the remains of the octopus’ consumed prey returned to the den. The dynamics surrounding why cohabiters exist at some dens and not others are not completely understood. Octopuses on a relatively healthy reef located at Cayos Cochinos, Honduras, were studied. Prey remains were retrieved from octopus …

Bridging Academia And Management In Conservation Genetics: The Case Of The Florida Duskywing Skipper (Ephyriades Brunnea), Megan Elizabeth Barkdull Jan 2018

Bridging Academia And Management In Conservation Genetics: The Case Of The Florida Duskywing Skipper (Ephyriades Brunnea), Megan Elizabeth Barkdull

Theses & ETDs

By fragmenting natural habitats and reducing population sizes of many organisms planetwide, humans have disrupted normal evolutionary processes. Conservation geneticists use molecular markers to study the impact of habitat fragmentation and destruction on the genetic structure of species, searching for signatures of inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity in order to better manage imperiled species. In this study, I attempted to develop microsatellite markers for the Florida Duskywing skipper (Ephyriades brunnea), a vulnerable skipper butterfly that is a specialist in pine rocklands habitat, a globally-imperiled ecosystem type. Development and testing of these microsatellite markers is ongoing. To guide future analyses, …
