Meiothermus ruber Genome Analysis Project

ABC transporters are essential for cellular transport; contribute to maintain the homeostasis of the cells. Generally, ABC transporters are multi-subunit; contain essential cytoplasmic factors which are critical to ATP hydrolysis activity. In this paper, we would like to take a closer look to Mrub_1283, Mrub_1284 and Mrub_1285, three consecutive genes in Meiothermus ruber genome. We hypothesize that these genes are in the same operon and encode for ABC glycine/ betaine transporters. To confirm our hypothesis, we utilizes several bioinformatics tools to predict the potential function of Mrub_1283, Mrub_1284 and Mrub_1285 and to search for their orthologs in Escherichia coli genome. …

The Impact Of Human Traffic On Wildlife Abundance On A Recreational Trail System In Southeastern Tennessee, Katherine Hesler, Aaron G. Corbit Jan 2018

The Impact Of Human Traffic On Wildlife Abundance On A Recreational Trail System In Southeastern Tennessee, Katherine Hesler, Aaron G. Corbit

Research in Biology

Humans impact wildlife in numerous ways. The most serious being direct habitat destruction due to the expansion of urban landscapes, farmland, logging, and other activities that consume natural resources. However, even outdoor recreation in relatively protected areas can exert an influence. While consumptive outdoor recreational activities, like hunting and fishing, directly impact wildlife populations, non-consumptive outdoor recreation, like hiking or mountain biking, can impact wildlife in less overt ways. Simply the presence of humans in a natural area can disrupt normal animal behavior and drive animals away from important resources. In this study we used trail cameras to examine the …

Hplc Detection Of The Possible Presence Of 17-A-Ethindyl Estradiol In Treated Effluents Released From The Chattanooga Water Treatment Plant, Jacqueline Dulanto, Benjamin Thornton, David Nelsen

Research in Biology

Research has confirmed that elevated synthetic estrogen in surface waters can lead to intersex characteristics in aquatic vertebrates. Unmetabolized antibiotics, hormones from animal wastes, including humans, and discarded pharmaceuticals are some ways synthetic estrogen enter aquatic ecosystems through the release of contaminated effluents. In this investigation, the Agilent 1260 Infinity HPLC was used to detect the possible presence of 17-α-ethindyl estradiol in effluents released from the Chattanooga Sewer Treatment Plant. Results were analyzed by comparing HPLC chromatograms from effluent and spiked samples. We detected a possible peak of synthetic estrogen in the effluent samples with a retention rate of 6 …

Seychelles: Diabetes, Camille Myers

Global Public Health

One of the major health problems in Seychelles, a cluster of islands off the coast of Eastern Africa, is diabetes. There are many different types of diabetes, but the most common type to this region is Type 2 diabetes. At this time Seychelles, and many other countries in Africa, have about half of the adult population diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Along with the diagnosis of diabetes being a problem, people in Seychelles often go undiagnosed for a while because they are ignorant to the risks and the symptoms of the disease. Only about 50% of the population with pre-diabetic …

Obesity, Noah Rhodes Jan 2018

Obesity, Noah Rhodes

Global Issues in Public Health

Obesity is a worldwide issue that can be defined as a non-communicable condition which means that it is non-infectious and non-transmissible and it is defined as having a BMI over 30 even though BMI doesn’t account for the person’s muscle mass which causes some athletes to be considered obese just because they weigh a lot for their height. Diagnosing obesity can be a long process which includes a health history being taken, a general physical exam, calculation of BMI, and measuring waist circumference. Diagnosis of obesity also involves checking for problems such as high blood pressure, variation of cholesterol levels …

Indoor Air Quality: The United States, Paola Solano

Global Issues in Public Health

Indoor air quality is one of today’s most prevalent public health concerns. It is quite shocking to learn that almost all populations in the world can be affected. We oftentimes expect to be home and be safe, but our indoor environment can also be harming to our health. In certain regions, there is more pollution indoors than outdoors due to the surrounding environment. There exist numerous factors that can cause poor air quality. Some of the most common causes include mold, carbon dioxide, moisture damage, and other indoor air contaminants. Although alarming, there are many practices that can better the …

The Relationship Between Exposure To Lead And Criminal Behavior, Margaret Meyer, Christine Rogers Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Exposure To Lead And Criminal Behavior, Margaret Meyer, Christine Rogers

2017-2018: Scott County, Iowa Health Department

In recent years it has been made apparent that exposure to lead is a significant problem for many individuals and families. Lead exposure–whether through the air, water, or by ingestion–has been linked to numerous physical, cognitive, and social problems (Chandramouli, 2009; Nevin, 2007). Furthermore, urban, poor and immigrant populations are at a higher risk for lead exposure (Bakhireva, et al., 2013). And increasingly a connection between lead exposure and criminal behavior has been identified through both correlation studies and experiments. The high cost of exposure to lead is apparent when looking at the effects of lead over a lifetime, and …

Eelgrass Distribution In Casco Bay 2018, Seth Barker Jan 2018

Eelgrass Distribution In Casco Bay 2018, Seth Barker

Publications

Eelgrass, Zostera marina, is one of many marine and estuarine flowering plants that grow in intertidal and subtidal locations around the world. In Maine, only one other flowering plant occupies similar habitats, Widgeon Grass, or Ruppia maritima. The focus of this project is the distribution of eelgrass in Casco Bay. Monitoring eelgrass distribution over a large geographic area and identifying potential factors responsible for changes in distribution is no small task, but most efforts to preserve the ecology of an area begin with these basic steps. Though direct cause and effect relationships are often difficult to support, enough is known …

Putting Rooted Networks Into Practice, Alida Cantor, Elisabeth Stoddard, Dianne Rocheleau, Jennifer F. Brewer, Robin Roth, Trevor Birkenholtz, Katherine Foo, Padini Nirmal

Geography

Rooted networks provide a conceptual framework that embeds network thinking in nature-society geography in order to investigate socio-ecological relations, while emphasizing the place-specific materiality of these relations. This progress report examines how geographers have put the framework into scholarly practice. The conceptual approach has enabled researchers to: 1) articulate the territoriality and materiality of networks as assemblages, which may be simultaneously rooted and mobile; 2) discern diverse types of power that flow through network connections; and 3) conduct analyses that unearth multiply-situated knowledges within networks. Challenges emerge as we seek to integrate the approach more fully with disciplinary traditions, including …

The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc Jan 2018

The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This paper examines how the modernist Soviet writer, Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938), became the target of a renewed campaign of vilification in 1936-1937 that led to his subsequent arrest, interrogation, conviction (on trumped up charges of espionage and terrorism), and execution in 1938. The accusation of having produced slanderous, if not treasonous, literary works that were “counter-revolutionary” and “anti-Soviet” in nature that had been leveled against Pilnyak in the late 1920s as a result of the publication of two controversial works of fiction, “Tale of the Unextinguished Moon” (1926) and Mahogany (1929), was renewed in 1936-1937 as part of an anti-formalism …

Winsorized And Smoothed Estimation Of The Location Model In Mixed Variables Discrimination, Hashibah Hamid Jan 2018

Winsorized And Smoothed Estimation Of The Location Model In Mixed Variables Discrimination, Hashibah Hamid

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The location model is a familiar basis and excellent tool for discriminant analysis of mixtures of categorical and continuous variables compared to other existing discrimination methods. However, the presence of outliers affects the estimation of population parameters, hence causing the inability of the location model to provide accurate statistical model and interpretation as well. In this paper, we construct a new location model through the integration of Winsorization and smoothing approach taking into account mixed variables in the presence of outliers. The newly constructed model successfully enhanced the model performance compared to the earlier developed location models. The results of …

Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu Jan 2018

Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Drawing on the existing scholarly studies that have gone beyond the misogynist paradigm, such as those by Mabel Lee, Gilbert Fong, Terry Siu-han Yip, Kwok-kan Tam, and Mary Mazzilli, I intend to explore the connection between the Zen Buddhist comprehension of Dao and the representation of women in Gao Xingjian’s novels and plays. As desire and sexual relationships play a very crucial part in the realm of Zen, the role of women is inevitably bound up with self-awareness and self-reflection, which are enshrined by Gao Xingjian as necessary on the path toward individual enlightenment. According to Gao, even if women’s …

Historicizing Whiteness And White Supremacy, Anthony Albey Soliman Jan 2018

Historicizing Whiteness And White Supremacy, Anthony Albey Soliman

The Forum: Journal of History

From the end of the eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, demographic changes reformulated the ideal American citizen to be a white landowning American man. My historiographical paper covers the works of four authors, discussing the centrality of race in their works. In my paper, I cover several themes that are present throughout these disparate works, such as the role of space, citizenship, and race on the peripheries of settlement, and the highly mutable nature of whiteness regarding labor and nationality. By critiquing some of the anachronistic tendencies and omissions of contingency by some historians, I display the ways …

Phantom Midge Mandibles In Lake Sediments As Bioindicators Of Historic Fish Absence In Minnesota’S Shallow Lakes, Holly Kundel, Isabelle Natrop Jan 2018

Phantom Midge Mandibles In Lake Sediments As Bioindicators Of Historic Fish Absence In Minnesota’S Shallow Lakes, Holly Kundel, Isabelle Natrop

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

Research Question: Is Chaoborus americanus a useful bioindicator of contemporary and historical fish absence in Minnesota’s shallow lakes? The phantom midge Chaoborus americanus (Diptera: Chaoboridae) is restricted to fishless habitats due to their vulnerability to fish predation (Von Ende, 1979, Schilling et al. 2009). Their chitinous mandibles are preserved in pond sediments, making this species an excellent bioindicator of historical fish absence in water bodies with unknown fish colonization history (Lamontagne and Schindler, 1994; Schilling et al. 2008). Our research is part of a larger project using paleolimnological techniques to understand historical regime shifts (from clear to turbid states) in …
