Sperm Depletion And Mating Behavior In The Parasitoid Wasp Spalangia Cameroni (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Bethia H. King

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Mating behavior was examined in the parasitoid wasp Spalangia cameroni. Males attempted copulation with both virgins and already mated females. Males attempted copulation regardless of whether they still had sperm. Already mated females rejected attempts to mate again but virgin females would mate 'with males regardless of whether or not they had sperm left. Males mated with 12-52 females before exhausting their sperm sup- plies. Males that had mated only once daily exhausted their sperm supplies in their late thirties (days old), if ever; and males that had mated four times daily exhausted their's at 7-13 days. Males produced …

High Points, Low Points, Turning Points: Life Stories Of Cambodian American Youth, Allyssa Mccabe, Khanh Dinh

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Qualitative methods such as McAdam's Life Story Interview offer a rich means of exploring how culture affects an individual's development. Such a method has seldom been used with Asian Americans. In the present study, 20 Cambodian American teenagers aged 15-18 (half female, half male) narrated the high, low, and turning points of their lives. Those narratives were transcribed and coded with respect to the predominant emotional valence and context of those key events. Half of high point narratives were painful events that the narrator had recast in a positive light, a hallmark of resilience and of a tendency to redeem …

Dispute Resolution Mechanisms: An Analysis Of The Indus Waters Treaty, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi Jan 2018

Dispute Resolution Mechanisms: An Analysis Of The Indus Waters Treaty, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Since India and Pakistan’s independence in 1947, both states have fought over the occupied territories of Kashmir to gain control of water supplies, which are strategically valuable. Even in recent times, the countries are facing constant threats from each other over several separate issues. India and Pakistan’s water conflicts are long-standing and relate to Indian infrastructure on the western tributaries. Pakistan is of the view that India is robbing Pakistan’s water supplies and building its water management capacity only as a political maneuver to gain political supremacy by practicing hydro-hegemony. On the other hand, India maintains that it is only …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

1. Acoustic telemetry studies have frequently prioritized linear configurations of hydrophone receivers, such as perpendicular from shorelines or across rivers, to detect the presence of tagged aquatic animals. This approach introduces unknown bias when receivers are stationed for convenience at geographic bottlenecks (e.g. at the mouth of an embayment or between islands) as opposed to deployments following a statistical sampling design.

2. We evaluated two-dimensional acoustic receiver arrays (grids: receivers spread uniformly across space) as an alternative approach to provide estimates of survival, movement and habitat use. Performance of variably spaced receiver grids (5–25 km spacing) was evaluated by simulating …

Linking Environment And Economy, Jesse Carbonara Jan 2018

Linking Environment And Economy, Jesse Carbonara

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

River Stewards demonstrates the correlation of environment and economy. Through the Dayton Riverfront Master Plan, we saw how development focused on enhancing current environmental assets can reinforce positive economic development. Firsthand, we have visited organizations that connect environment and economy. Some provide environmental public and private services. Some focus on advocacy and education. Both rely on economic conditions to exist, while contributing to the economy. An environmental business can add growth to the economy, and a growing economy can finance more environmental initiatives.

The G Protein-Coupled Receptor, Gpr3, Promotes The Acquisition Of Oocyte Meiotic Competence, Laura Firmani Jan 2018

The G Protein-Coupled Receptor, Gpr3, Promotes The Acquisition Of Oocyte Meiotic Competence, Laura Firmani

Doctoral Dissertations

Mammalian oocytes are arrested in meiotic prophase from around the time of birth until just before ovulation. Following an extended period of growth, they are stimulated to mature to the metaphase II stage by a preovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that occurs with each reproductive cycle. Small, growing oocytes are not competent to mature into fertilizable eggs because they do not possess adequate amounts of cell cycle regulatory proteins, particularly cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1). As oocytes grow, they synthesize CDK1 and acquire the ability to mature. After oocytes achieve meiotic competence, meiotic arrest at the prophase stage is dependent on …

Voluntary Web-Based Self-Assessment Quiz Use Improves Exam Performance, Especially For Learners With Low Prior Knowledge, Jenifer C. Utz, Matthew L. Bernacki

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

We examined students’ voluntary use of digital self-assessment quizzes as a resource for learning in a large anatomy and physiology lecture course. Students (N = 238) could use 16 chapter quizzes and four analogous unit quizzes to rehearse and self-assess knowledge. Repeated use was uncommon (12%), as was lack of use (13%). Most students (75%) engaged in occasional use of self-assessment quiz items. Exam performance differed between repeated use (84%), occasional use (76%), and no use (72%) groups. Differences were greater among students who lacked prior knowledge of course topics. Quiz use improved performance more for low prior knowledge students, …

Worldwide Distribution Of The Human Apolipoprotein E Gene - The Association Between Apoe, Subsistence, And Latitude, Tiffany S. Ho Jan 2018

Worldwide Distribution Of The Human Apolipoprotein E Gene - The Association Between Apoe, Subsistence, And Latitude, Tiffany S. Ho

Theses and Dissertations

The human apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) plays an important role in metabolizing lipids, regulating plasma cholesterol, and maintaining biological function. Structural differences in APOE variants impact cholesterol absorption and health risk, so that alleles serve as biomarkers for numerous cardiovascular and neurological diseases (Lai 2015). Variant differences are determined by changes in two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs429358 and rs7412. Distribution of alleles varies across populations. Allele frequencies in populations have been shown to be associated with cultural and environmental factors, including subsistence strategy and latitude (Eisenberg 2010).

This study aims to provide a cross-population, genetic association study …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Maximizing the recovery of PCR-amplifiable DNA is an important consideration in the optimization of field-ready PCR-based diagnostic techniques. Fecal specimen preservation is particularly important due to the universal use of stool for the non-invasive diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. A comprehensive and systematic assessment of methods for maintaining and preserving soil-transmitted helminth (STH) DNA, particularly from fragile eggs subjected to nuclease exposure in stool, has not been conducted previously. Through the comparative analysis of a variety of preservation techniques, the present study demonstrates that fecal samples designated for PCR-based molecular analysis maintain sample integrity for at least 60 days …

A Case Study: The Attitudes Of A Teaching Assistant Of French Toward Instructional Technology, Farida Emelia Ngandu Tshiebue Jan 2018

A Case Study: The Attitudes Of A Teaching Assistant Of French Toward Instructional Technology, Farida Emelia Ngandu Tshiebue

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Technology has shaped the personal experiences of Teaching Assistants (TAs) of French at the collegiate level in the United States (US), what they feel about the technology tools that are accessible in their work environment, and how they use these tools in their practice of teaching. Yet, there is limited research on the specific topic of the attitudes of TAs of French toward the instructional technologies that are available to them. This study sought to investigate the attitudes of a singular TA of French at a southern US university toward instructional technology (IT) by exploring the dynamics of IT use …

Mechanisms Underlying Serotonergic Excitation Of Callosal Projection Neurons In The Mouse Medial Prefrontal Cortex, Emily K. Stephens, Arielle L. Baker, Allan T. Gulledge Jan 2018

Mechanisms Underlying Serotonergic Excitation Of Callosal Projection Neurons In The Mouse Medial Prefrontal Cortex, Emily K. Stephens, Arielle L. Baker, Allan T. Gulledge

Dartmouth Scholarship

Serotonin (5-HT) selectively excites subpopulations of pyramidal neurons in the neocortex via activation of 5-HT2A (2A) receptors coupled to Gq subtype G-protein alpha subunits. Gq-mediated excitatory responses have been attributed primarily to suppression of potassium conductances, including those mediated by KV7 potassium channels (i.e., the M-current), or activation of non-specific cation conductances that underlie calcium-dependent afterdepolarizations (ADPs). However, 2A-dependent excitation of cortical neurons has not been extensively studied, and no consensus exists regarding the underlying ionic effector(s) involved. In layer 5 of the mouse medial prefrontal cortex, we tested potential mechanisms of serotonergic excitation …
