Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis In A Patient With Ulcerative Colitis Flare, Lisa M. Connors, Rooman Ahad, Paul H. Janda, Z Mudasir
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Inflammatory bowel disease is characterized by a chronic inflammatory state and is therefore associated with abnormalities in coagulation and a hypercoagulable state. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease yet contributes significant morbidity and mortality to those affected. Early diagnosis is critical, as a delay in diagnosis portends a worse prognosis. This paper seeks to highlight the increased risk of venous sinus thrombosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. We start by discussing the case of a seventeen-year-old female who presented with ulcerative colitis flare and developed new-onset seizures, found to be caused by a …

Discriminations Of Color And Pattern On Artificial Flowers By Male And Female Bumble Bees, Bombus Impatiens (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Dana Church, Catherine Plowright, Diana Loyer
The Great Lakes Entomologist
This study examined the performance of male bumble bees (Bombus impatiens) in color and pattern discriminations and compared it to that of female bees. Bees were trained to forage from rewarding (S+) and unrewarding (S-) artificial flowers which differed in color (blue vs yellow) or pattern (e.g., concentric vs radial). Learning of the discrimination by the bees was then assessed by examining choice proportions of different flower types while none of the flowers offered reward. Color discriminations were made with 98% accuracy by the males, and the choice proportion was no different for females. Pattern discriminations were very poor or …

(excerpt)
Tiphia vernalis Rohwer is native to China, Japan, and Korea where it is an external parasite of Popillia spp. (King 1931). It was released into the United States from China and Korea during the mid-1920s through early 30s (Fleming 1968). After it became established in the United States, releases were made from domestic sources beginning in 1931 (King et al. 1951). Tiphia vernalis was released into Ohio sporadically during 1936-1953 (King et al.1951). Tiphia vernalis has been reported parasitizing Popillia spp. (P. quadriguttata (Fabricius) in Korea; P. chinensis (Frivaldsky) and P. formosana (Arrow) in China; and P. japonica …

Second Location For Two Rare Odonata In Ohio, Nannothemis Bella And Ladona Julia, (Odonata: Libellulidae) Discovered At Singer Lake Bog, Summit County, Ohio., Robert C. Glotzhober, Eric Chapman
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Previously the dragonflies (Odonata, Libellulidae) Ladona julia and Nannothemis bella were known in Ohio from only one extant population each: L. julia from extreme northwest Ohio in Williams County and N. bella from west-central Ohio in Champaign County. During the summer of 2000 populations of each of these species were found in close proximity to each other at Singer Lake, a wetlands complex in southern Summit County in northeastern Ohio. This new location is also home to a population of another rare Ohio dragonfly, Dorocordulia libera (Odonata, Corduliidae) that was discovered during 1999. The Singer Lake wetlands are proving to …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Ametropus albrighti is shown to be a junior subjective synonym of A. neavei, n. syn. Ametropus neavei sensu lato demonstrates stable structural characteristics with respect to male genitalia and larval morphology, whereas degree of maculation and therefore abdominal patterning varies both among populations and within populations. Ametropus ammophilus is distinctive, and the two North American species are apparently allopatric based on known distributions, which are reviewed.
Termite Trail-Following Behavior Elicited By Ballpoint Pen Ink, Ariel M. Kershner
Termite Trail-Following Behavior Elicited By Ballpoint Pen Ink, Ariel M. Kershner
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
Termite trail-following behavior occurs because of pheromones produced in the sternal gland of the termites and secreted when the sternal gland touches a substance. 2-phenoxyethanol, a chemical found in ballpoint pen ink, is structurally similar to the trail-following pheromones and causes the termites to respond with trail-following behavior. This study investigated the difference in trail-following behavior between ballpoint pen ink, which contains 2-phenoxyethanol, and Sharpie ink, which does not contain 2-phenoxyethanol. The termites were placed on a square drawn with either ballpoint pen ink or Sharpie pen ink. Time spent on each of the squares was measured. We predicted that …

© 2017. Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway by which bioactive trace metals are delivered to the surface ocean. The proportions of total aerosol trace metals that dissolve in seawater, and thus become available to biota, are not well constrained and are therefore a key uncertainty when estimating atmospheric fluxes of these elements to surface waters. The aim of this study was to elucidate the main physico-chemical controls on the dissolution of the bioactive trace metals manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb). To this end, aerosol and surface seawater samples were collected in the Sargasso Sea and …
Theory Of Sustainable Development: Concept Evolution, Dimension And Prospect, Zhang Xiaoling
Theory Of Sustainable Development: Concept Evolution, Dimension And Prospect, Zhang Xiaoling
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Sustainable development should not only be defined in terms of inter-generational equity but also in terms of inter-spatial equity. First, we reviewed the evolution on the concept of sustainable development, and clarified how it could bridge human needs and the nature capacity based on economic theories. however, we found that:sustainable development was still a fuzzy concept which failed to include the dimension of scale as a priori. In order to tackle this problem, inter-spatial equity was introduced to this concept. Further, we investigated the core questions and explored their strategies on this field based on sustainability science. Then, we …

Support Ecological Restoration And Sustainable Management Of Forests In Northeast China Based On Research Of Forest Ecology And Demonstrations, Zhu Jiaojun, Yan Qiaoling, Yu Lizhong, Zhang Jinxin, Yang Kai, Gao Tian
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The secondary forest or second-growth forest, originated from natural regeneration after the destructive disturbances of original forests induced by human beings (e.g., long-term and large-scale logging) or by natural extreme events, has become the major forest resource worldwide. Since the flood disasters happened in the Yangtze River and Nen River in 1998, the Chinese government began to realize the importance of natural forests and started to implement the Natural Forest Conservation Project. A more rigorous protection measure of comprehensive ban on commercial logging in natural forests was implemented in 2016. As a result, the forest farmers, whose main business was …

Polysaccharide-Mediated Synthesis Of Melanins From Serotonin And Other 5-Hydroxy Indoles, Koen Vercruysse, Astiney Clark, Noor Alattas, Dylan Brooks, Nafisa Hamza, Margaret Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Aim: As a continuation of our research on the melanin formation from catecholamines, we studied the polysaccharide-mediated oxidation of serotonin and other 5-hydroxy indoles into melanin-like materials. As for the catecholamines, we observed that many polysaccharides promote the oxidation of such compounds, particularly in the presence of Cu2+. Methodology: The reactions were monitored using reverse phase-HPLC and size-exclusion chromatography techniques. Melanin-like materials were purified through dialysis and characterized using UV-Vis and Fourier transform IR spectroscopic techniques. Results: One such material, synthesized from chondroitin sulfate type A and serotonin in the presence of Cu2+ was found to affect …

Dynamic Cycling Of T-Snare Acylation Regulates Platelet Exocytosis, Jinchao Zhang, Yunjie Huang, Jing Chen, Haining Zhu, Sidney W. Whiteheart
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Platelets regulate vascular integrity by secreting a host of molecules that promote hemostasis and its sequelae. Given the importance of platelet exocytosis, it is critical to understand how it is controlled. The t-SNAREs, SNAP-23 and syntaxin-11, lack classical transmembrane domains (TMDs), yet both are associated with platelet membranes and redistributed into cholesterol-dependent lipid rafts when platelets are activated. Using metabolic labeling and hydroxylamine (HA)/HCl treatment, we showed that both contain thioester-linked acyl groups. Mass spectrometry mapping further showed that syntaxin-11 was modified on cysteine 275, 279, 280, 282, 283, and 285, and SNAP-23 was modified on cysteine 79, 80, 83, …

The glutamine synthetase (GS1) is a key enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of glutamate and ammonia to produce glutamine in the nitrogen (N) metabolism. Previous studies on GS1s in several plant species suggest that overexpression of GS1s can enhance N utilization, accelerate plant vegetative growth, and change wood formation. In this study, we isolated a GS1 gene, termed PsnGS1.2, from Populus simonii × Populus nigra. This gene was expressed at a higher level in roots, and relatively lower but detectable levels in xylem, leaves and phloem of P. simonii × P. nigra. The protein encoded by PsnGS1.2 is …

Background: Infectious disease is the single greatest threat to taxa such as amphibians (chytrid fungus), bats (white nose syndrome), Tasmanian devils (devil facial tumor disease), and black-footed ferrets (canine distemper virus, plague). Although understanding the genetic basis to disease susceptibility is important for the long-term persistence of these groups, most research has been limited to major-histocompatibility and Toll-like receptor genes. To better understand the genetic basis of infectious disease susceptibility in a species of conservation concern, we sequenced all known/predicted immune response genes (i.e., the immunomes) in 16 Florida gopher tortoises, Gopherus polyphemus. All tortoises produced antibodies against Mycoplasma agassizii …
