Understanding Roles For Collaboration: Teacher And Speech-Language Pathologist, Brooke Myrick
Student Theses and Dissertations
This investigation sought to discover if graduating education students understood the role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and if they realized the opportunities for collaboration. This study was performed using a survey distributed to education students in their final year of study. The survey consisted of general questions about SLPs in school systems and questions about the two professions working together. The data collected revealed a positive attitude toward collaboration but an overall confusion of what SLPs do in public-school settings. These students who were set to begin their teaching careers within months of the survey did not understand the …

Energy And Water Assessment And Plausibility Of Reuse Of Spent Caustic Solution In A Midwest Fluid Milk Processing Plant, Carly Rain Adams
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Food Energy and Water Nexus (FEW Nexus) is the inseparable connection linking these resources. The concept of the FEW Nexus within the food industry addresses the connection of water and energy as key members of food production. The steady increase in population and the increase in food demand are directly related, therefore, the need for water and energy. Immediately taking on this critical challenge will lead to tangible impacts on the water and energy crisis facing the food system. To reduce the distance between process productivity and resource efficiency it must first be determined, within food processing, where water …

β-Glucan derived from cell walls of Candida albicans is a potent immune modulator. It has been shown to induce trained immunity in monocytes via epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming and to protect from lethal sepsis if applied prior to infection. Since β-glucan-trained monocytes have not been classified within the system of mononuclear phagocytes we analyzed these cells metabolically, phenotypically and functionally with a focus on monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation and compared them with naïve monocytes and other types of monocyte-derived cells such as classically (M1) or alternatively (M2) activated macrophages and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs). We show that β-glucan inhibits spontaneous apoptosis of …

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) have long been studied for their protective role against cardiovascular diseases, however recently relationship between HDL and cancer came into focus. Several epidemiological studies have shown an inverse correlation between HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and cancer risk, and some have even implied that HDL-C can be used as a predictive measure for survival prognosis in for specific sub-population of certain types of cancer. HDL itself is an endogenous nanoparticle capable of removing excess cholesterol from the periphery and returning it to the liver for excretion. One of the main receptors for HDL, scavenger receptor type B-I (SR-BI), is highly …

Deeper exploration of uncharacterized Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferases has the potential to expand our knowledge of the types of molecules that can be acylated by this important superfamily of enzymes and may offer new opportunities for biotechnological applications. While determining native or biologically relevant in vivo functions of uncharacterized proteins is ideal, their alternative or promiscuous in vitro capabilities provide insight into key active site interactions. Additionally, this knowledge can be exploited to selectively modify complex molecules and reduce byproducts when synthetic routes become challenging. During our exploration of uncharacterized Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferases from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we identified such an …

Wastewater, especially anaerobic treatment effluent, contains high ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and inorganic orthophosphate (PO4-P), which necessitate additional treatment to meet stringent discharge regulations. Ion exchange regeneration is a process that can be adopted for not only removing but also recovering nutrients. However, recovering nutrients by ion exchange from nutrient-rich effluents that also contain micropollutants (which typically pass through anaerobic treatment as well) may result in subsequent problems, since micropollutants could end up in ion exchange effluent, regenerant, or recovered fertilizer products. Micropollutant removal by a nonselective adsorbent, such as biosolids-derived biochar, before nutrient recovery processes would …

Reproductive Differences Between Three Species Of Brachyrhaphis Livebearing Fishes In Panamá, Bruce Stallsmith
Neotropical Biodiversity
Both theory and the published literature support the importance of demographic selection for differences in life history traits between populations as well as between related species. Much attention in this area has been paid to species in the livebearing fish family Poeciliidae. I studied populations of three species of poeciliid fishes of the genus Brachyrhaphis (episcopi, roswithae, terrabensis) found from low to high elevation in western and central Panamá for reproductive life history phenotypes. To determine how reproductive life history phenotypic characters subject to both selection and environmental influence may vary between these species, field collections were made at the …

Neotropical Biodiversity
In this study, we describe the diet of Leptodactylus podicipinus in South Pantanal. We analysed the stomach content of 30 individuals collected in September 2017 in the Miranda sub-region, Mato Grosso do Sul. We identified 19 prey categories to Order level, out of which Coleoptera was the most representative group and the most important prey category, followed by Orthoptera and Hemiptera. We recorded a post-metamorphic individual of Rhinella schneideri in the diet of L. podicipinus, the first record of batracophagy for this species. Our results provide evidence for the opportunistic and generalist feeding behaviour of L. podicipinus.

Diel Periodicity Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Drift In A Coastal Stream In Northern Venezuela, M. Daniela Mendoza, José V. Montoya, Belkys Y. Perez
Neotropical Biodiversity
Aquatic macroinvertebrates and organic matter (OM) are transported downstream with the current, in a process that is modulated by different mechanisms in the ecosystem. Macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport are processes involving interactions between organisms and the environment at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this study was to describe benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in one of the least disturbed streams of northern Venezuela during the dry season. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport were assessed on three different dates, sampling every three hours for each diel cycle using three drift nets. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift exhibited a clear …

Diversity Of The Dung Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) In An Altitudinal Gradient In The East Slope Of Los Andes, Napo Province, Ecuador, Veronica R. Espinoza, Jorge Ari Noriega
Neotropical Biodiversity
We present a preliminary analysis of the diversity of dung beetles in an altitudinal gradient on the East slope of Los Andes, Napo province, Ecuador. We sampled 12 localities within a 2200-m altitudinal gradient (400–2600 m a.s.l.) using pitfall traps with 2 different baits. We registered 2215 individuals distributed within 14 genera and 54 species. Ontherus pubens was the most abundant species, with registers in 10 locations that cover an altitudinal gradient of 2021 m. We also found species associated to low, medium, and high elevation levels, as well as species located on either extreme of the altitudinal gradient. The …

Determination Of Apomixis By Flow Cytometry In Two Species Of Lachemilla (Rosaceae) In Ecuador, Fernanda Samaniego, Filip Kolár, Tomas Urfus, Álvaro Barragán, Katya Romoleroux
Neotropical Biodiversity
The genus Lachemilla in Ecuador consists of 27 species distributed along the páramos and superpáramos of the Andes. With 11 species, it is one of the most species-rich genera in the superpáramo zone. We report the presence of apomixis in Lachemilla hirta and L. hispidula. Both species were regularly visited by entomofauna, where Diptera were the most representative group. Three treatments (enclosing the inflorescences with mesh bags, wax paper bags and the open-pollinated control) were used to determine the presence of pollination, apomixis and both processes respectively. In the fruiting assays with the mesh bags, L. hirta showed no significant …

B Chromosome Polymorphism In South American Cichlid, Giselle Xavier Perazzo, Rafael Bueno Noleto, Marcelo Ricardo Vicari, Adriana Gava, Marta Margarete Cestari
Neotropical Biodiversity
Extra chromosomes are found in all major taxa, and their characteristics, function, and evolution are not yet completely understood. Known as B chromosomes, they are additional and dispensable genetic material that are present in particular individuals of certain populations of some species. In this work, we present the occurrence of B chromosomes in the cichlid Crenicichla lepidota from southern Brazil. The analyzed population showed 2n = 48 chromosomes, plus 0, 2, 3, or 4 B chromosomes, being variable among metaphases (intraindividual variation). Morphologically, these B chromosomes were variable in size, similarly to the A chromosomes. B chromosomes did not show …

Owls In Urban Narratives: Implications For Conservation And Environmental Education In Nw Patagonia (Argentina), Soledad Molares, Yamila Gurovich
Neotropical Biodiversity
In Argentinian Patagonia, the coexistence of owls and humans has a long and sometimes conflictive ethnobiological heritage. This paper presents a recent environmental situation which brought humans and owls together after massive fruiting of the native bamboo Chusquea culeou (Poaceae) in Los Alerces National Park, near Esquel city (Patagonia, Argentina). The event was followed by an increase in the population of native mice (e.g. Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, Abrothrix longipilis) which, in turn, caused an increase in the population of owls and other predators. This caused concern and fear in towns and homesteads close to the National Park. The objectives of our …

The goals of the original proposed project remain the same, that is, to test the hypothesis that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for stormwater harvesting is a technically feasible, socially and environmentally acceptable, economically viable, and legally feasible option for developing new water supplies for arid Western urban ecosystems experiencing increasing population, and climate change pressures on existing water resources. The project is being carried out via three distinct but integrated components that include: 1) Monitoring of existing distributed MAR harvesting schemes involving a growing number of demonstration Green Infrastructure (GI) test sites; 2) Integrated stormwater/vadose zone/groundwater/ ecosystem services modeling; and …
Ecosystemic Resilience Relative To Increasing Populations Of Unwed Mothers In Korea: A Preliminary Mixed Methods Investigation, Hyeseong Kang
Ecosystemic Resilience Relative To Increasing Populations Of Unwed Mothers In Korea: A Preliminary Mixed Methods Investigation, Hyeseong Kang
Doctoral Dissertations
The number of unwed mothers in Korea who raise their children on their own, instead of placing them up for adoption, is increasing. Even in the face of social stigma and discrimination, unwed mothers are beginning to advocate for their rights as mothers and change public perceptions of and cultural assumptions about unwed mothers. The purpose of this research is to explore unwed mothers’ perceptions about their own resilience in wider contexts and the facilitative factors that may be contributing to this. This study used an exploratory sequential design in which qualitative interview data were first collected to explore these …

Background and Aims: Seedling herbivory is an important selective filter in many plant communities. The removal of preferred food plants by both vertebrate and, more commonly, invertebrate herbivores can destroy entire seedling cohorts, and consequently dictate plant community assembly. Nevertheless, our understanding of how and why some seedlings are more prone to herbivore attack than their neighbours remains limited. For seedlings, where even minor tissue damage is fatal, avoiding contact with herbivores is probably advantageous and, on this basis, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are strong candidates to fulfil a primary defensive role. Methods: We quantified seedling selection by snails (Cornu …

Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman
Duke Law Journal
Three widely discussed explanations of the punitive carceral state are racism, harsh drug laws, and prosecutorial overreach. These three narratives, however, only partially explain how our correctional system expanded to its current overcrowded state. Neglected in our discussion of mass incarceration is our largely forgotten history of the long-term, wholesale institutionalization of the disabled. This form of mass detention, motivated by a continuing application of eugenics and persistent class-based discrimination, is an important part of our history of imprisonment, one that has shaped key contours of our current supersized correctional system. Only by fully exploring this forgotten narrative of long-term …
