Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
The reproductive biology and growth of the Mississippi Silvery Minnow, Hybognathus nuchalis, is described from multiple sites in the Pearl River, Louisiana. Individuals were collected from August 2011 to August 2012. Ovarian weights, expressed as a percentage of body weights, peaked in December. Size structure ranged from 29.0 to 60.0 mm SL for females and 25.0 to 56.0 mm SL for males. Mature ova were found from November to January. Females reached first maturity (L50) at 37.0 mm SL and L50 for males is at 41.0 mm SL. Sex ratio (females:males) is biased towards females (X2= 18.57 p …

Environmental Fate And Microbial Effects Of Monensin, Lincomycin, And Sulfamethazine Residues In Soil, Matteo D'Alessio, Lisa M. Durso, Daniel N. Miller, Brian Woodbury, Chittaranjan Ray, Daniel D. Snow
Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
The impact of commonly-used livestock antibiotics on soil nitrogen transformations under varying redox conditions is largely unknown. Soil column incubations were conducted using three livestock antibiotics (monensin, lincomycin and sulfamethazine) to better understand the fate of the antibiotics, their effect on nitrogen transformation, and their impact on soil microbial communities under aerobic, anoxic, and denitrifying conditions. While monensin was not recovered in the effluent, lincomycin and sulfamethazine concentrations decreased slightly during transport through the columns. Sorption, and to a limited extent degradation, are likely to be the primary processes leading to antibiotic attenuation during leaching. Antibiotics also affected microbial respiration …
Elucidating The Mechanism Of Cancer Drug Addiction In Alk+ Alcl, Soumya Sundara Rajan
Elucidating The Mechanism Of Cancer Drug Addiction In Alk+ Alcl, Soumya Sundara Rajan
Open Access Dissertations
The NPM1-ALK fusion kinase drives ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALK+ ALCL). Mechanisms of NPM1-ALK-driven lymphomagenesis are well defined, but mediators of cancer drug addiction in cells overexpressing it are unknown. Cancer drug addiction arises paradoxically when tumors become dependent on exposure to inhibitors to which they formerly were sensitive. We and others demonstrated previously that addiction to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) occurs in resistant ALK+ ALCL over-expressing NPM1-ALK. It is unknown, however, if addiction mechanisms defined recently for solid tumors addicted to MEK/ERK inhibitors apply also to these kinase-driven lymphomas. We consistently found that MEK/ERK activation and other oncogenic …

The Phylum Apicomplexa is a quintessentially parasitic lineage, whose members infect a broad range of animals. One exception to this may be the apicomplexan genus Nephromyces, which has been described as having a mutualistic relationship with its host. Here we analyze transcriptome data from Nephromyces and its parasitic sister taxon, Cardiosporidium, revealing an ancestral purine degradation pathway thought to have been lost early in apicomplexan evolution. The predicted localization of many of the purine degradation enzymes to peroxisomes, and the in silico identification of a full set of peroxisome proteins, indicates that loss of both features in other …
Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes
Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Over 3.7 million people are in high risk of coastal flooding and live within 1 mile of high tide in the US alone. The Atlantic coast is one of the most vulnerable areas due to its low elevation, large population, and economic importance (Bray, et. al, 2016). Coastal municipalities in the region of Southeast Florida, such as the cities of Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, etc., are at especial risk from coastal flooding related to sea level rise. The US National Climate Assessment has named Miami, Florida as the economically most vulnerable city impacted by this sea level rise …
A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith
A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
Many leading theories of human sentence processing assume that language compre- hension and production take place under the strict control of a symbolic grammar. For example, in sentence comprehension, reading or hearing a word triggers the application of a grammar rule that incorporates the word into the existing sentence structure so that the resulting structure is consistent with the all of the rules of the grammar. These theories have had wide success in explaining important timing effects, e.g., predicting speed-ups or slowdowns while reading a sentence. A number of phenomena have been identified, though, that challenge these grammar-controlled theories and …
Genomic Imprinting And X Chromosome Dosage Compensation In Domestic Ruminants, Jingyue Duan
Genomic Imprinting And X Chromosome Dosage Compensation In Domestic Ruminants, Jingyue Duan
Doctoral Dissertations
In diploid cells, genes are presumed to be expressed from both alleles to maintain gene dosage for normal development. However, a small number of genes reach haplosufficiency even with only one functional allele per cell. Most of these genes are regulated through genomic imprinting and X chromosome inactivation (XCI). DNA methylation is an essential epigenetic regulation for developmental programming in embryogenesis and play crucial roles in genomic imprinting and XCI. This dissertation presents 1) effects of maternal diets on genome imprinting in fetal sheep (Chapter Two), 2) dosage compensation of the X chromosomes in bovine germline, embryos and somatic tissues …

Optimization Of Bacterial Expression And Purification Of Nipsnap1 Protein, Jay Michael Yarbro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Nipsnap1 (4-nitrophenylphosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like homolog 1) is a novel mitochondrial protein shown to interact with the intracellular domain of amyloid precursor protein (APP), one of the key biomarkers implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. A formerly developed expression strategy for Nipsnap1 based on the pET-28a expression system showed direct binding of purified recombinant Nipsnap1 to NAD+ and NADP+. This was further confirmed using Circular Dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, indicating that NAD+ binding produces a structural change in Nipsnap1.To address the low yield of Nipsnap1 protein in the former expression system, several approaches and conditions were evaluated in this study. …

Neotropical Biodiversity
We present the results of a rapid avian inventory conducted September 2012 in the vicinity of Boanamo, within the Territorio Étnico Waorani and Parque Nacional Yasuní, Orellana and Pastaza provinces, Ecuador. Our inventory is the first of its kind from within the Territorio Etnico Waorani, and was carried out using visual and auditory detections made during a 16-day survey. We recorded 362 species of birds during the survey, a number that is around 60% of the expected bird community from this previously unexplored area. We include both qualitative and quantitative natural history information, primarily concerning reproductive behavior, for 41 species.

Neotropical Biodiversity
Platyrrhinus is a genus of leaf-nosed frugivorous bats that are endemic to the Neotropics. P. umbratus occurs in the Andean and costal mountain systems of Venezuela and Colombia. P. nigellus occurs along the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia. Both species are medium-sized members of the genus possessing confusing taxonomic histories that have never intersected. Four of the 21 recognized species of Platyrrhinus, among them P. umbratus, do not have their taxonomic identification confirmed by molecular analyses. We provide the first genetic data (Cyt-b and ND2 sequences) for the species. Phylogenetic analyses including the new genetic data lead to the conclusion …

The species richness of venomous snakes in Ecuador (~39 species) is among the highest in the world. However, until now no information exists regarding geographic patterns of ophidism. In this study, we present a detailed spatial snakebite risk map which was built by stacking weighted ecological niche models of the 19 snake species responsible for the majority of Ecuador’s envenomation cases. Our weights were based on the proportion of cases reported for each species on local epidemiological studies. Based on our analyses, we identify 184 densely populated rural communities with high snakebite risk that should be monitored by health organizations. …
Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart
Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart
Psychology Faculty Publications
The prevention sciences often face several situations that can compromise the statistical power and validity of a study. Among these, research can (1) have data with many variables, sometimes with low sample sizes, (2) have highly correlated predictors, (3) have unclear theory or empirical evidence related to the research questions, and/or (4) have difficulty selecting the proper covariates in observational studies. Modeling in these situations is difficult—and at times impossible—with conventional methods. Fortunately, regularized regression—a machine learning technique—can aid in exploring datasets that are otherwise difficult to analyze, allowing researchers to draw insights from these data. Although many of these …
Global Minimum Search And Carbon Monoxide Binding Studies Of Novel Gold Nanoclusters, Navneet S. Khetrapal
Global Minimum Search And Carbon Monoxide Binding Studies Of Novel Gold Nanoclusters, Navneet S. Khetrapal
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In bulk form, gold is a well-known noble metal. However, gold nanoparticles exhibit remarkable catalytic behavior towards various types of chemical reactions. These catalytic properties are highly dependent upon the size and shape and therefore knowledge of the geometries of these nanoparticles is of prime importance. The main goal of this dissertation is, therefore, going to be towards the elucidation of the structures of novel gold clusters using a combined experimental and theoretical approach and subsequent modeling to explore the binding of simple substrates like carbon monoxide with gold clusters. The theoretical method used to study the structural evolution of …

Differentiation Of Oligodendrocytes For Myelination In The Nervous System, Krishna Deo Sharma
Student Theses and Dissertations
Differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) into large a number of oligodendrocytes (ODCs) for transplantation therapy has been a challenge. Evidence indicates that NSC differentiation is influenced by the interaction of the stem cells and their extracellular environment such as extracellular matrix (ECM), and soluble factors, such as growth factors and hormones. We tested if (1) well planned sequential addition of a combination of soluble factors increase the population of NSCs differentiating into ODCs and (2) a natural ECM (e.g, matrigel) promotes ODC differentiation better than poly-D-lysine (PDL). Embryonic rat NSCs were propagated in the presence of basic fibroblast growth …

Evoalloy: An Evolutionary Approach For Analyzing Alloy Specifications, Jianghao Wang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Using mathematical notations and logical reasoning, formal methods precisely define a program’s specifications, from which we can instantiate valid instances of a system. With these techniques, we can perform a variety of analysis tasks to verify system dependability and rigorously prove the correctness of system properties. While there exist well-designed automated verification tools including ones considered lightweight, they still lack a strong adoption in practice. The essence of the problem is that when applied to large real world applications, they are not scalable and applicable due to the expense of thorough verification process. In this thesis, I present a new …
