Purdue University Press Books

Edited by Kris Rutten, Stefaan Blancke, and Ronald Soetaert, Perspectives on Science and Culture explores the intersection between scientific understanding and cultural representation from an interdisciplinary perspective. Contributors to the volume analyze representations of science and scientific discourse from the perspectives of rhetorical criticism, comparative cultural studies, narratology, educational studies, discourse analysis, naturalized epistemology, and the cognitive sciences. The main objective of the volume is to explore how particular cognitive predispositions and cultural representations both shape and distort the public debate about scientific controversies, the teaching and learning of science, and the development of science itself. The theoretical background of …

A Method For Integrating Science Podcasts In The Undergraduate Classroom, Alanna L. Lecher Feb 2018

A Method For Integrating Science Podcasts In The Undergraduate Classroom, Alanna L. Lecher

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Podcasts are audio-based shows distributed through the internet via apps and websites. Podcasts are typically thematic in nature, and several podcasts that regularly include science content have appeared over the last decade. These podcasts include Radiolab, Stuff You Should Know, Freakanomics Radio and StarTalk. As most podcasts consist of interviews or conversations between two or more scientists and reporters, they highlight the dynamic nature of science as multiple opinions on the same study or idea are presented. Such podcasts can be utilized by instructors to supplement lectures, assignments, and other activities in order to facilitate student learning in science courses. …

The Relationship Between Yield Parameters And Morphological Characters For Barley: Evaluating Linear And Non-Linear Models, H Rihan, A Abdullah Feb 2018

The Relationship Between Yield Parameters And Morphological Characters For Barley: Evaluating Linear And Non-Linear Models, H Rihan, A Abdullah

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The best statistical model (linear or non-linear) for use in the study of the relationship between yield parameters and morphological characters of barley was investigated. It was confirmed that Non-linear model (Exponential regression analysis) is better than linear for studying the relationship between yield parameters and morphological characters, because the determination coefficient for non-linear model was higher than the determination coefficient for linear model. Moreover, the residual distributions for non-linear equation were much better than the residual distributions for linear equation. A relationship between leafiness and yield parameters was not shown by both linear and non-linear models, while analysis of …

The Japanese Impact On Global Drone Policy And Law: Why A Laggard United States And Other Nations Should Look To Japan In The Context Of Drone Usage, Kaitlin D. Sheets

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The global Unmanned Aircraft System, or unmanned aerial systems (UAS) revolution is poised to have an impact across a broad range of industries from agriculture to filmmaking. The United States has taken a difficult and slower path to implementing UAS policy, with Congress essentially mandating the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to take action in 2015. The FAA's 624-page rulebook marks the first attempt of any comprehensive plan to regulate remote-controlled and commercial aircraft activity. Across the globe, Japan, a country with a proven track record in electronics and technology, is outpacing other countries in devising regulations that will increase UAS …

A Case Study Of Relationships, Resilience, And Retention In Secondary Mathematics And Science Teachers, Angela W. Webb Feb 2018

A Case Study Of Relationships, Resilience, And Retention In Secondary Mathematics And Science Teachers, Angela W. Webb

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Reasons why mathematics and science teachers leave the profession have been well documented and discussed. However, a critical examination of the nuances contributing to their retention warrants our attention. In this qualitative case study, I applied relational–cultural theory (Miller, 1986) to the experiences of three female mathematics and science teachers. I sought to unpack teachers’ decisions to remain in the classroom year after year and make meaning of their experiences as related to resilience in and through relationships. Based on findings from participants' experiences, recommendations for improving teacher retention along the career trajectory are offered.

The Assembly Of The Mitoribosomal Large Subunit In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Rui Zeng Feb 2018

The Assembly Of The Mitoribosomal Large Subunit In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Rui Zeng

Open Access Dissertations

Mitoribosomes are specialized for the synthesis of hydrophobic membrane proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA, all essential for oxidative phosphorylation. Despite their linkage to human mitochondrial diseases and the recent cryo-EM reconstruction of yeast and mammalian mitoribosomes, how ribosomes are assembled remains obscure. Here, we dissected the yeast mitoribosome large subunit (mt-LSU) assembly process by systematic genomic deletion of 44 mt-LSU proteins (MRPs). Analysis of the strain collection unveiled 37 proteins essential for functional mt-LSU assembly, three of which are critical for mt-LSU 21S rRNA stability. Hierarchical cluster analysis of mt-LSU subassemblies accumulated in mutant strains revealed cooperative assembly of protein …

Utilization Of Social Networking Sites: Engaging In Online Social Comparisons And Differences Among Self-Esteem, Life Satisfaction, And Affect Within College Students, Nicole Lynn Garza

Theses and Dissertations

The Western culture has constant access to technology which enhances their capability to connect to social media. Research indicates that the college population is one demographic that utilizes the Internet and social networking sites (SNSs) the most; this increased frequency of usage puts the students at a greater risk for experiencing negative consequences. Prior research suggests frequency of use as well as type of social comparisons made, upward or downward, while using SNSs play a role in determining one’s self-esteem, life satisfaction, and overall psychological wellbeing. As previous studies have not focused on standardizing the target or the control condition, …

Muscle Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors May Mediate Trans-Synaptic Signaling At The Mouse Neuromuscular Junction, Xueyong Wang, J. Michael Mcintosh, Mark M. Rich Feb 2018

Muscle Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors May Mediate Trans-Synaptic Signaling At The Mouse Neuromuscular Junction, Xueyong Wang, J. Michael Mcintosh, Mark M. Rich

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Block of neurotransmitter receptors at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) has been shown to trigger upregulation of the number of synaptic vesicles released (quantal content, QC), a response termed homeostatic synaptic plasticity. The mechanism underlying this plasticity is not known. Here, we used selective toxins to demonstrate that block of α1-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) at the NMJ of male and female mice triggers the upregulation of QC. Reduction of current flow through nAChRs, induced by drugs with antagonist activity, demonstrated that reduction in synaptic current per se does not trigger upregulation of QC. These data led to the remarkable conclusion …

Justifiability And Animal Research In Health: Can Democratisation Help Resolve Difficulties?, Shaun Yon-Seng Khoo Feb 2018

Justifiability And Animal Research In Health: Can Democratisation Help Resolve Difficulties?, Shaun Yon-Seng Khoo

Morality and Ethics of Animal Experimentation Collection

Current animal research ethics frameworks emphasise consequentialist ethics through cost-benefit or harm-benefit analysis. However, these ethical frameworks along with institutional animal ethics approval processes cannot satisfactorily decide when a given potential benefit is outweighed by costs to animals. The consequentialist calculus should, theoretically, provide for situations where research into a disease or disorder is no longer ethical, but this is difficult to determine objectively. Public support for animal research is also falling as demand for healthcare is rising. Democratisation of animal research could help resolve these tensions through facilitating ethical health consumerism or giving the public greater input into deciding …

Global Macroevolution And Macroecology Of Passerine Song, William D. Pearse, Ignacio Morales-Castilla, Logan S. James, Maxwell Farrell, Frédéric Boivin, T. Jonathan Davies

Ecology Center Publications

Studying the macroevolution of the songs of Passeriformes (perching birds) has proved challenging. The complexity of the task stems not just from the macroevolutionary and macroecological challenge of modeling so many species, but also from the difficulty in collecting and quantifying birdsong itself. Using machine learning techniques, we extracted songs from a large citizen science dataset, and then analyzed the evolution, and biotic and abiotic predictors of variation in birdsong across 578 passerine species. Contrary to expectations, we found few links between life‐history traits (monogamy and sexual dimorphism) and the evolution of song pitch (peak frequency) or song complexity (standard …

Results

Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis of 7 male patients affected with Claes-Jensen syndrome and 56 age- and sex-matched controls identified a specific DNA methylation defect (epi-signature) in the peripheral blood of these patients, including 1769 individual CpGs and 9 genomic regions. Six healthy female carriers showed less pronounced but distinctive changes in the same regions enabling their differentiation from both patients and controls. Highly specific computational model using the most significant methylation changes demonstrated 100% accuracy in differentiating patients, carriers, and controls in the training cohort, …

The Somatic Experience Of White Privilege: A Dance/Movement Therapy Approach To Racialized Interactions, Wendy Allen Feb 2018

The Somatic Experience Of White Privilege: A Dance/Movement Therapy Approach To Racialized Interactions, Wendy Allen

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This qualitative study examined the somatic experience of White privilege in participants who were committed to developing a nonracist White identity. It postulated that there are somatic cues and expressive signatures of White privilege that, once identified, could be addressed through basic dance/movement therapy interventions used at the intrapersonal level. Awareness of these cues may help White people navigate their privilege in racialized interactions thereby reducing further enactments of racism.

Using Critical Race Theory and Whiteness Studies as conceptual frameworks and building on research exploring the impact of oppression on the body, this study sought to answer the following questions: …

Two-Stage Concrete As A Sustainable Production, Hakim Salem Abdelgader, Ali Said Ahmed El-Baden, H. A. Abdurrahman, A. S.M. Abdul Awal

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Two-stage concrete (TSC) is a sustainable concrete which is produced by forcing a flowable cement grout mixture through the voids of a skeletal mass made of compacted preplaced aggregates. From the technical and economic aspects, TSC is particularly useful for construction and repair of concrete structures especially foundations, underwater construction, nuclear reactors, concrete dams, heritage structures and in constructions with closely spaced reinforcement. TSC differs from ordinary concrete in that it contains a higher proportion of stone aggregate and the aggregate stays in point-to-point contact as placed. Thus, the mechanical characteristics of the TSC in failure conditions are distinctly different …
