The Goose
Natural history. Teaching. Writing. All have form, all have function. But just as no architecture is risk-free, no architecture is neutral. In this personal essay, I explore the surprising connections that develop when university students engage with natural history as way of knowing the ground underfoot.

Pre-Spawning Snout-Gripping Behaviors Of Gymnothorax Pictus And Gymnothorax Thyrsoideus (Muraenidae) In Captivity, Kar-Hoe Loh, Hong-Ming Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The main focus of this study has been on the distinctive prespawning snout-gripping behaviors and mate choice of two moray species (Gymnothorax pictus and G. thyrsoideus). The behavior of snout-gripping means that the male grips the female’s snout with its jaws. It is the most distinctive behavior to confirm the success of mating pair formation naturally and was rarely described on moray eels or other coral reef fishes. The reproductive behaviors of the two moray species were also first observed and photographed in the laboratory aquaria. Over 22 reproductive events including 9 spawning events by 28 adult individuals of G. …

Microorganisms associated with plants are highly diverse and can produce a large number of secondary metabolites, with antimicrobial, anti-parasitic and cytotoxic activities. We are particularly interested in exploring endophytes from medicinal plants found in the Pantanal, a unique and widely unexplored wetland in Brazil. In a bio-prospecting study, strains LGMF1213 and LGMF1215 were isolated as endophytes from Vochysia divergens, and by morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses were characterized as Phaeophleospora vochysiae sp. nov. The chemical assessment of this species reveals three major compounds with high biological activity, cercoscosporin (1), isocercosporin (2) and the new compound 3-(sec-butyl)-6-ethyl-4,5-dihydroxy-2-methoxy-6-methylcyclohex-2-enone (3). …

Shifting Between Public And Private: The Reconfiguration Of Global Environmental Regulation, Orr Karassin, Oren Perez
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Over the past two centuries, public environmental regulation (PER) has been progressively supplemented by private transnational regulation (PTR), creating a hybrid environmental governance regime. A fivecategory typology is developed to describe the ways in which international and national PER interact with private forms of environmental regulation. We then analyze the policy considerations that are relevant to the design of such hybrid regimes and various forms of interaction. Next, we describe two case studies that demonstrate the diversity of interactions between PER and PTR in a single regime. The case of sustainability reporting illustrates how public law builds on the expertise …

Trefoil Factor Family Peptides Enhance Cell Migration By Increasing Cellular Osmotic Permeability And Aquaporin 3 Levels, T Marchbank, Rj Playford
School of Biomedical Sciences
Trefoil factor family (TFF) peptides are produced rapidly at sites of injury, stimulating epithelial migration, a process involving rapid changes in cell shape and volume, requiring rapid flow of water into and out of the cell. We examined the effect of TFFs on fluidity of cells by measuring their sensitivity to osmotic challenges and cell migration, and determined whether those results were mediated through altering the levels of aquaporins (AQPs), a family of transmembrane water channels involved in cellular water homeostasis. Gastric (AGS) and colonic (Caco-2) cell lines had intrinsic TFF levels determined and the predominant TFF peptide knocked down …

Glutamatergic signaling plays an important role in learning and memory. Using Pavlovian conditioned approach procedures, the mechanisms that drive stimulus-reward learning and memory have been investigated. However, there are instances where reward-predictive stimuli can function beyond being solely predictive and can be attributed with “motivational value” or incentive salience. Using a Pavlovian conditioned approach procedure consisting of two different but equally predictive stimuli (lever vs. tone) we investigated the role NMDA receptor function has in the attribution of incentive salience. The results revealed that the administration of MK-801, an NMDA receptor antagonist, during acquisition of Pavlovian conditioned approach promoted goal-tracking …

The Biologics Price Competition And Innovation Act: Is A Generic Market For Biologics Attainable?, Kasey E. Koballa
The Biologics Price Competition And Innovation Act: Is A Generic Market For Biologics Attainable?, Kasey E. Koballa
William & Mary Business Law Review
The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act of 2009 (BPCIA) provides an abbreviated approval pathway for biological therapeutic products shown to be biosimilar to an FDA-approved biological reference product. The BPCIA purported to reduce the price of biologics while promoting innovation. In two recent cases, the Federal Circuit interpreted a key provision of the BPCIA requiring an applicant to provide the reference product sponsor with notice 180 days before marketing the product. The Federal Circuit’s interpretation extends the exclusivity period already provided for the reference product sponsor, deterring innovation and price reduction. Thus, the Supreme Court granted certiorari in one …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Many marine organisms have developed the capability of producing unique metabolites and thus are highly likely to contain anti-infective agents. This study was conducted to investigate extracts of three seaweeds (Caulerpa racemosa, Caulerpa sertularioides, Kappaphycus alvarezii), two soft corals (Lobophytum microlobulatum, Sarcophyton auritum) and a marine sponge (Spheciospongia vagabunda) collected from Malaysian coast for antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and cytotoxic activities. The samples were subjected to sequential solvent extraction in order to obtain hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol and water extracts. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were studied using a colorimetric broth microdilution method. The hexane extract of L. microlobulatum …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations are currently facing unsustainable losses due to a variety of factors. Colonies are challenged with brood pathogens, such as the fungal agent of chalkbrood disease, the microsporidian gut parasite Nosema spp., and several viruses. These pathogens may be transmitted horizontally from worker to worker, vertically from queen to egg and via vectors like the parasitic mite, Varroa destructor. Despite the fact that these pathogens are widespread and often harbored in wax comb that is reused from year to year and transferred across beekeeping operations, few, if any, universal treatments exist for their control. In …

Perspectives On Science And Culture, Kris Rutten, Stefaan Blancke, Ronald Soetaert
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Edited by Kris Rutten, Stefaan Blancke, and Ronald Soetaert, Perspectives on Science and Culture explores the intersection between scientific understanding and cultural representation from an interdisciplinary perspective. Contributors to the volume analyze representations of science and scientific discourse from the perspectives of rhetorical criticism, comparative cultural studies, narratology, educational studies, discourse analysis, naturalized epistemology, and the cognitive sciences. The main objective of the volume is to explore how particular cognitive predispositions and cultural representations both shape and distort the public debate about scientific controversies, the teaching and learning of science, and the development of science itself. The theoretical background of …
Gender Disparity In Law Review Citation Rates, Christopher A. Cotropia, Lee Petherbridge
Gender Disparity In Law Review Citation Rates, Christopher A. Cotropia, Lee Petherbridge
William & Mary Law Review
Gender disparity in scholarly influence—measured in terms of differential citation to academic work—has been widely documented. The weight of the evidence is that, in many fields of academic inquiry, papers authored by women receive fewer citations than papers authored by men. To investigate whether a similar gender disparity in scholarly influence exists in legal studies, we analyze the impact of gender on citation to articles published in top 100 law reviews between 1990 and 2010. We find evidence of gender disparity in citation rates, but in surprising contrast to observations made in other disciplines, we observe that articles authored by …

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) belong to a family of transcription factors that regulate the expression of genes required for the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. Three SREBP isoforms, SREBP1a, SREBP1c, and SREBP2, have been identified in mammalian cells. SREBP1a and SREBP1c are derived from a single gene through the use of alternative transcription start sites. Here we investigated the role of SREBP-mediated lipogenesis in regulating tumor growth and initiation in colon cancer. Knockdown of either SREBP1 or SREBP2 decreased levels of fatty acids as a result of decreased expression of SREBP target genes required for lipid biosynthesis in …

Towards An Integrated Storm Surge And Wave Forecasting System For Taiwan Coast, Yeayi Peter Sheng, Vladimir Alexander Paramygin, Chuen-Teyr Terng, Chi-Hao Chu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper describes the application of a coupled surge-wave model for simulating storm surge and wave along Taiwan coast. The simulations were conducted with an integrated surge-wave modeling system using a large coastal model domain wrapped around the island of Taiwan, with a grid resolution of 50-400 m. Simulations were made with tide only, with wind and tide, and with tide and wind and wave. The first part of the paper describes the hindcasting of historical typhoons. Hindcasting of Soudelor in 2015 revealed the significant effect of waves on storm surge when wave exceeded 11 m. Both the water level …

Pregnancy As A Normal Condition Of Employment: Comparative And Role-Based Accounts Of Discrimination, Reva B. Siegel
William & Mary Law Review
As the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 (PDA) turns forty, it is time to consider how we define pregnancy discrimination.
In recent years, courts have come to define pregnancy discrimination almost exclusively through comparison. Yet our understanding of discrimination, inside and outside the pregnancy context, depends on judgments about social roles as well as comparison. Both Congress and the Court appealed to social roles in defining the wrongs of pregnancy discrimination. In enacting the PDA, Congress repudiated employment practices premised on the view that motherhood is the end of women’s labor force participation, and affirmed a world in which women …

Ribonuclase P (RNase P) is an essential metallo-endonuclease that catalyzes 5′ precursor-tRNA (ptRNA) processing and exists as an RNA-based enzyme in bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. In bacteria, a large catalytic RNA and a small protein component assemble to recognize and accurately cleave ptRNA and tRNA-like molecular scaffolds. Substrate recognition of ptRNA by bacterial RNase P requires RNA-RNA shape complementarity, intermolecular base pairing, and a dynamic protein-ptRNA binding interface. To gain insight into the binding specificity and dynamics of the bacterial protein-ptRNA interface, we report the backbone and side chain 1H, 13C, and 15N resonance assignments of the …

Egg Turning Behavior And Incubation Temperature In Forster’S Terns In Relation To Mercury Contamination, Gregory Taylor, Joshua Ackerman, Scott A. Shaffer
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Egg turning behavior is an important determinant of egg hatchability, but it remains relatively understudied. Here, we examined egg turning rates and egg temperatures in Forster’s terns (Sterna forsteri). We used artificial eggs containing a data logger with a 3-D accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a temperature thermistor to monitor parental incubation behavior of 131 tern nests. Overall, adults turned their eggs an average (±SD) of 3.8 ± 0.8 turns h-1, which is nearly two times higher than that of other seabirds. Egg turning rates increased with nest initiation date. We also examined egg turning rates and egg temperatures in relation …
