Groundwater Hydrogeolgy And Hydrochemistry Of Karst Springs In The Eastern Peninsula Of Fort Hood Military Installation, William Scribner Welles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The eastern peninsula of Fort Hood Military Installation is underlain by a complex karst spring network. These springs are a primary water source in a protected habitat for endangered songbirds, which has only recently begun to be fully investigated. These Fredericksburg Group springs express both epigenetic and hypogenetic karst signatures. The study area is part of a paleo reef trend, a hydraulically disconnected segment of the northern section of the Edwards Aquifer. This study utilized standard ion index values, repeated measures, and principal component analyses on the chemical profiles of six perennial springs to classify spring water sources and their …

Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez Dec 2018

Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez

Philosophy

Reactive theories of responsibility see moral accountability as grounded on the capacity for feeling reactive-attitudes. I respond to a recent argument gaining ground in this tradition that excludes psychopaths from accountability. The argument relies on what Paul Russell has called the 'subjectivity requirement'. On this view, the capacity to feel and direct reactive-attitudes at oneself is a necessary condition for responsibility. I argue that even if moral attitudes like guilt are impossible for psychopaths to deploy, that psychopaths, especially the "successful" and "secondary" subtypes of psychopathy, can satisfy the subjectivity requirement with regard to shame. I appeal to evidence that …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, a high sensitivity, polarization preserving photonic crystal fiber (PCF), based on circular air holes for sensing in the terahertz (THz) band, is presented. The finite element method, a practical and precise computational technique for describing the interactions between light and matter, is used to compute the modal properties of the designed fiber. For the designed PCF, comprising of circular air holes in both the cladding and in the porous core, a relative sensitivity of 73.5% and a high birefringence of 0.013 are achieved at 1.6 THz. The all circular air-hole structure, owing to its simplicity and compatibility …

Investigating The Influence Of Non-Technical Words To The Teaching And Learning Of Science: A Case Study Of A Primary School In Taveta Sub-County, Buya Yorrum Komora Dec 2018

Investigating The Influence Of Non-Technical Words To The Teaching And Learning Of Science: A Case Study Of A Primary School In Taveta Sub-County, Buya Yorrum Komora

Master of Education

Teaching of science has been found to be most challenging. These challenges are believed to be due to lack of apparatus used for teaching, class size, and inadequate curriculum materials but also the language used to teach science. During the process of teaching, learners face the problem of not understanding the meaning of non-technical words and how they create regular explanation of the knowledge itself. Non-technical words refer to words that have one or multiple meanings in our daily language but carry exact and specific meaning, and different when used in scientific context. Studies have shown that learners only experience …

An Investigation Of Primary Children’S Misconceptions On Floating And Sinking Concepts: A Survey In One Government Primary School In Soroti Municipality, Eastern Uganda, Cathy Martha Akello

Master of Education

Floating and sinking concepts are part of the science curriculum in Uganda, an important topic applicable in everyday life. Globally teaching and learning of floating and sinking concepts pose a challenge to both teachers and learners in the primary schools. This has led to a number of common misconceptions resulting to persistent errors in learners’ performance. These misconceptions tend to be difficult to remediate if not handled in children’s early years of education. A sample of one hundred learners of grade 5 aged 10-15 years participated in the study. Questionnaires were used to elicit learner’s misconceptions about the floating and …

Raptor Research Center Publications and Presentations

To provide an easy and reliable work tool to identify the sex of Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) chicks, we weighed and measured 95 nestlings in the crèche phase during 24-31 January 2017 on the Falkland Islands, Argentina. Sex was subsequently determined using DNA analyses of blood from the same individuals. Significant differences were found in bill length (exposed culmen), bill depth and width, flipper length, and diagonal tarsus, but stepwise discriminant analysis showed bill length to be the best predictor for sex determination. Our model correctly classified 82.7% of males and 90.2% of females (overall correct classification 86.2%). …

The Single Mitochondrion Of The Kinetoplastid Parasite Crithidia Fasciculata Is A Dynamic Network., John Dimaio, Gordon Ruthel, Joshua J. Cannon, Madeline F. Malfara, Megan L. Povelones

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences & Biotechnology Faculty Papers

Mitochondria are central organelles in cellular metabolism. Their structure is highly dynamic, allowing them to adapt to different energy requirements, to be partitioned during cell division, and to maintain functionality. Mitochondrial dynamics, including membrane fusion and fission reactions, are well studied in yeast and mammals but it is not known if these processes are conserved throughout eukaryotic evolution. Kinetoplastid parasites are some of the earliest-diverging eukaryotes to retain a mitochondrion. Each cell has only a single mitochondrial organelle, making them an interesting model for the role of dynamics in controlling mitochondrial architecture. We have investigated the mitochondrial division cycle in …

Dimensional Analysis And Variational Formulation Of Diffuse Optical Tomography (Dot) Model, Thowhida Akther Dec 2018

Dimensional Analysis And Variational Formulation Of Diffuse Optical Tomography (Dot) Model, Thowhida Akther

All Theses

Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) is an emerging modality for soft tissue imaging with medical applications including breast cancer detection. DOT has many benefits, including its use of non ionizing radiation and its ability to produce high contrast images. However, it is well known that DOT image reconstruction is unstable and has low resolution. DOT uses near infra-red light waves to probe inside a body; for example, DOT can be used to measure the changes in the amount of oxygen in tissues, which can detect early stages of cancer in soft tissues such as the breast and brain. In this thesis, …

Migration Cues And Abundance Estimation Of Imperiled Sturgeon In The Savannah River, Joshua Richard Vine Dec 2018

Migration Cues And Abundance Estimation Of Imperiled Sturgeon In The Savannah River, Joshua Richard Vine

All Theses

Quantitative understanding of reproductive ecology is vital to the conservation and recovery of imperiled fishes. Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) and Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) are endangered diadromous fish that range across the Atlantic Coast of North America. Historically, populations of both species were exploited for the black caviar trade range-wide. Although moratoria ended commercial harvest, populations are currently threatened by habitat degradation and alteration. This research represents an initiative to increase our understanding of reproductive behavior for both Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon by estimating adult population levels as well as the effects of environmental covariates on the initiation of spawning …

The Contribution Of Private Forestland Management And Monitoring To Avian Conservation In Pine Systems In South Carolina, Jesse Marguerite Wood

All Theses

Land-use activities and changes to ecosystems pervasively threaten biodiversity. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Bill allocates financial and technical resources to meet the need for agricultural and timber production while also conserving natural resources. On private forestlands in South Carolina, management practices (prescribed burning, thinning, herbicide application) are employed to improve upland pine habitat for wildlife and are reimbursable through Farm Bill cost-share programs. Some regional priority bird species have habitat requirements dependent on forestry management, so data are needed on how common management activities affect bird communities. I studied managed loblolly pine systems in the South …

Methane Oxidation Potential Of Uncomposted Yard Waste As A Landfill Biocover, Gomathy Radhakrishna Iyer Dec 2018

Methane Oxidation Potential Of Uncomposted Yard Waste As A Landfill Biocover, Gomathy Radhakrishna Iyer

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Biocovers are widely used in landfills to oxidize emissions of the greenhouse gas methane. Biocovers used till date are fully or partially made of composts. Compost takes time and effort to create, and costs about $10 per cubic yard on an average. Even more importantly, however, production of compost, although theoretically an aerobic process, actually generates methane, from 3.2 to 362 kg CO2-equivalents per ton of wet waste composted, depending on the type of waste, whether open or enclosed composting technology is used, and other factors. To reduce the net greenhouse gas emissions from biocovers, this research explores the potential …

Attention-Based Lstm-Cnns For Uncertainty Identification On Chinese Social Media Texts, Binyang Li, Kaiming Zhou, Wei Gao, Xu Han Han, Linna Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Uncertainty identification is an important semantic processing task, which is crucial to the quality of information in terms of factuality in many techniques, e.g. topic detection, question answering. Especially in social media, the texts are written informally which are widely used in many applications, so the factuality has become a premier concern. However, existing approaches that still rely on lexical cues suffer greatly from the casual or word-of-mouth peculiarity of social media, in which the cue phrases are often expressed in sub-standard form or even omitted from sentences. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes the attention-based LSTM-CNNs for the …

Production And Biocompatibility Of Spider Silk Proteins In Goat Milk, Richard E. Decker Jr Dec 2018

Production And Biocompatibility Of Spider Silk Proteins In Goat Milk, Richard E. Decker Jr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to its strength, flexibility, and biocompatibility, spider silk is a highly appealing material for applications in the medical field. Unfortunately, natural spider silk is difficult to obtain in large quantities because spiders are territorial and cannibalistic, making them impractical to farm. Synthetic spider silk proteins produced by transgenic hosts such as bacteria and goats have made it possible to obtain the quantities of spider silk needed to study it more fully and to investigate its potential uses. The spider silk proteins produced in our laboratory do not have an optimal purification method to remove all of the non-biocompatible contaminants …

The Abiotic And Biotic Controls Of Arctic Lake Food Webs: A Multifaceted Approach To Quantifying Trophic Structure And Function, Stephen L. Klobucar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Arctic is warming faster than any other region of the globe. To conserve and manage many thousands of lakes across arctic landscapes, scientists need to understand historic and present conditions within these lakes to predict how the lakes, and the organisms that inhabit them, may respond to a changing climate. The goal of my research was to improve our understanding of what physical, chemical, and biological factors contribute to: 1) how lake food webs are assembled; and, 2) how these food webs may change in the future. First, I used long-term observations and lab experiments to determine how fish …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Western Dairy Center at Utah State University had recognized through traiing of cheesemaking that a challenge that can exist for farmstead and artisan cheese manufacturing operations is disposal or utilization of the whey that is produced when milk is converted into cheese. Land application of whey is limited and can cause odor problems which would be detrimental to a cheesemaking operation located at the rual-urban interface.

The project provided information in support of a research grant from the Western Sustainable Agribulture Research and Education program that was investigating economics and feasiblity of using anaerobic digestion for treatment of whey …

Quantum Mechanical Studies Of N-H···N Hydrogen Bonding In Acetamide Derivatives And Amino Acids, Sandra J. Lundell Dec 2018

Quantum Mechanical Studies Of N-H···N Hydrogen Bonding In Acetamide Derivatives And Amino Acids, Sandra J. Lundell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Proteins are made of vast chains of amino acids that twist and fold into intricate designs. These structures are held in place by networks of noncovalent interactions. One of these, the hydrogen bond, forms bridges between adjacent pieces of the protein chain and is one of the most important contributors to the shape and stability of proteins. Hydrogen bonds come in all shapes and sizes and a full understanding of these not only aids in our understanding of proteins in general but can bridge the gap to finding cures to many protein-related diseases, such as sickle-cell anemia. The primary aim …
