A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis Of The National Board For Professional Teaching Standards, Melissa Urbain
Dissertations
This research is a feminist discourse analysis of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Five Core Propositions. The goal of this project is to shift the focus of educational discourse away from teachers’ gender and look towards their teachers’ teaching abilities as compared to the professional standards laid out in the NBPTS. It demonstrates that the national expectations placed on teachers are feminist and addresses and discredits current patriarchal discourse and policies in the field of education. This is accomplished through a close reading of the Five Core Propositions, drawing connections between the expectations in the document and the …

Losing Home: Housing, Displacement, And The American Dream, Jessie Speer
Dissertations - ALL
Over the past decade, new oral history archives and self-publishing platforms have led to an explosion in the production of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness. This dissertation frames the growing genre of homeless life narratives as a form of urban theory that has been largely displaced from public memory. Based on close readings of hundreds of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness from cities across the United States, this research highlights the violent geographies of the American dream, in which both political economies of urban housing and heteropatriarchal cultures of domesticity produce racialized and gendered cycles of displacement. Further, …

Orientation Invariance Methods For Inertial Gait, Ravichandran Subramanian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Intelligent devices such as smart phones, smart watches, virtual reality (VR) headsets and personal exercise devices have become integral elements of accessories used by many people. The ability of these devices to verify or identify the user could be applied for enhanced security and user experience customization among other things. Almost all these devices have built-in inertial sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope. These inertial sensors respond to the movements made by the user while performing day to day activities like walking, getting up and sitting down. The response depends on the activity being performed and thus can be used …

Can Lactate Dehydrogenase Be Used To Index Anaerobic Activity In Fishes?, Casey W. Schoenebeck, Erik Prenosil, Brianna Pallas, Aspen Abrams, Kimberly Carlson
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Anaerobic activities such as those associated with spawning, foraging for prey, and predator avoidance are difficult to quantify in wild fish. This study experimentally evaluated if the muscle enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) can be used to index recent anaerobic activity in fish by testing the hypothesis that muscle LDH activity will be greater in exercised fish than in rested fish. We used burst swimming motions in a swim tunnel to elicit anaerobic metabolism in a 5 day anaerobic exercise treatment (n = 30) and a rested control group (n = 30). On average the exercised fish produced significantly more LDH …
Chemical Competition Between Microscopic Stages Of Macrocystis Pyrifera And Five Native Kelp Species: Does Giant Kelp Always Lose?, Maria Suzanne Christensen
Chemical Competition Between Microscopic Stages Of Macrocystis Pyrifera And Five Native Kelp Species: Does Giant Kelp Always Lose?, Maria Suzanne Christensen
Master's Theses
The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera is often considered competitively dominant to other kelp species due to its high productivity. However, on the microscopic level, previous studies found that Macrocystis can be inferior to other kelp species through microscopic interspecies chemical competition. Recruitment failure can be caused by neighboring kelps because there is no species specificity in the stereochemistry of the signaling chemical used during reproduction to initiate spermatozoid release; therefore, Macrocystis spermatozoid release is pre-empted by that of its competitors. To date, this interaction has been tested between Macrocystis and only one other kelp taxon, Pterygophora. To test whether Macrocystis …

Nonpoint source pollution is a global challenge affecting streams and rivers. Due to the highly dispersed nature of nonpoint sources, they are difficult to track and manage. The goal of this study was to assess the extent of bacterial pollution along Coyote Creek in Northern California and to provide insight on microwatershed characteristics and their potential correlation to bacteria loads. Samples were collected and analyzed for fecal indicator bacteria concentrations at 21 geographic locations from within the creek and its stormwater outfalls. E. coli levels within Coyote Creek and stormwater entering the creek exceeded recreational water quality standards. Stormwater outfall …
De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja
De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The 1990s were a period of intense socio-economic upheaval in Ecuador, in part due to the numerous protests that would come to be known as the Levantamiento Indígena. Notoriously disenfranchised since the bloody conquest of the Americas, peoples of various Indigenous nationalities that reside within Ecuador fought for the constitutional recognition of the nation as both plurinational and multicultural, in order to secure intercultural public policies that would affect patterns of agrarian distribution, indigenous education, health, and overall representation. The prominence of the Indigenous movement and the revalorization of the Indigenous identity throughout Ecuador became an attractive vehicle for which …
Risk Assessment Of Fall Armyworm Resistance To Transgenic Corn Containing Single Or Pyramided Bacillus Thuringiensis Genes, Ying Niu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a target pest of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops in North and South America. However, after more than two decades of the intense use of Bt crop technology, S. frugiperda has developed resistance to Bt corn in several countries. The objectives of this study were: 1) to characterize the inheritance and fitness costs of Cry1A.105 resistance in S. frugiperda; 2) to evaluate larval survival and plant injury of Cry1A.105-susceptibile, -resistant, and -heterozygous S. frugiperda populations on transgenic corn plants containing single or pyramided Bt genes; 3) to estimate the frequency of Cry2Ab2 …
Determining The Drivers Of Anti-Tropical Distributions Across The Fish Tree Of Life, William Benton Ludt
Determining The Drivers Of Anti-Tropical Distributions Across The Fish Tree Of Life, William Benton Ludt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Anti-tropical distributions are those where populations of a single species, or multiple closely related taxa, are distributed outside of, and on opposing sides of, the tropics. These latitudinally disjunct distributions have been noted for over a century. Despite this long history of interest, little has been concluded regarding the actual mechanisms that drive this pattern, with several prominent hypotheses competing with one another in the literature. Here I review the proposed drivers of anti-tropicality, and subsequently test them using fishes with a variety of life history and taxonomic differences. This includes (1) a temperately restricted family with anti-tropical distributions – …

Sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari Zehner, is now widely established in sorghum, Sorghum bicolor L., production areas of the United States and is an important economic pest. However, detailed studies of temperature, host range and plant resistance effects on the biology and population parameters of the M. sacchari biotype responsible for the sorghum outbreak in the United States have not been performed previously. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate: 1) How temperatures affect M. sacchari 2) M. sacchari interaction with host plants 3) M. sacchari interaction with sorghum genotypes. The response of M. sacchari to six different constant temperatures (15, …
Endocytosis And The Nitric Oxide-Dependent Release Of Chloride, Vernon K. Dunn Jr
Endocytosis And The Nitric Oxide-Dependent Release Of Chloride, Vernon K. Dunn Jr
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the regulation of retinal synapses is a key step in elucidating the processing of information in the retina. Our lab has previously shown that nitric oxide (NO) can alter the synaptic response properties of amacrine cells by releasing Cl- from internal acidic compartments. This alteration in the Cl- gradient brings about a positive shift in the reversal potential of the GABA-gated current, which can convert inhibitory synapses into excitatory synapses. Recently, we have shown that the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) Cl- channel is involved in the Cl- release. Here, we test the hypothesis that (acidic) synaptic vesicles are …

Evaluation Of Dopaminergic And Antidopaminergic Agents For Use In Equine Metabolic Physiology, Nicole Arana Valencia
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A series of experiments studied the effects and practical applications of dopaminergic and antidopaminergic compounds in equine metabolic physiology. The first experiment was performed to assess the long-term effects of repeated cabergoline injections (every 10 days for a total of seven injections) on prolactin and α-melanocyte stimulating hormone concentrations in insulin insensitive mares. Additionally, the experiment also evaluated the use of cabergoline for improving insulin sensitivity. Plasma prolactin and α-melanocyte stimulating hormone concentrations were suppressed throughout the duration of the experiment even when the mares were challenged with a low-dose dopamine antagonist, sulpiride, the day previous to their subsequent cabergoline …

Troubled Water: Building A Bridge To Clean Energy Through Small Hydropower Regulatory Reform, Samuel J. Panarella, Jody Lowenstein
UCLA Journal of Environmental Law & Policy
It is beyond credible dispute that the planet is heating up at an alarming rate and that the ecological effects of global warming pose real questions about the continued viability of human and non-human life on earth in the not-too-distant future. A primary cause of global warming is the burning of carbon-based fuels, mainly coal, natural gas, and oil, to generate electricity and for other purposes. Clearly, more must be done, and done soon, to stave off the worst impacts of global warming.
Drastically reducing global carbon emissions features prominently in any serious proposal to combat global warming. However, given …
Effects Of The United States Reconstruction On Nationalism In The Japanese Education System, Connell Murphy
Effects Of The United States Reconstruction On Nationalism In The Japanese Education System, Connell Murphy
Voces Novae
When the United States began its reconstruction of Japan after World War II, they consistently put their own interests within the country before what would benefit Japan the most . While the first two years of the occupation led to significant changes inside and outside schools, including the Ministry of Education’s diminished role, increased local involvement in the academic system, and the removal of nationalistic “morality” classes such as shushin. All of these changes were necessary efforts to denationalize and decentralize Japan’s educational system and allow more choices for teachers and schools. When Washington began to take an increased interest …

Automated Urban Parcel Ledger Generation To Track Spatiotemporal Parcel Dynamics, Naci Dilekli, Jennifer Koch
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Urban population growth is expected to continue into the 21st century, bringing about drastic changes to urban landscapes across the globe. Our particular focus is to understand and evaluate urban growth patterns through parcel splitting in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area (OKCMA). To this end, we present the background and methodology used to develop the absent land parcel history information in the OKCMA using parcel data from the previous two years. OKCMA multiyear parcel data does not align spatially due to shifts and distortions. We developed a method to identify parent:child parcel relationships using their attribute and geometry information. This …

Study Of The Visual Adaptation Mechanism In Marine Species With The Change Of Habitation Depth., Demid Osipov, Daniil Moshnikov
The International Student Science Fair 2018
The goal of our work was to determine the principal mechanisms that provide the difference in visual perception of two marine species that live on different depths: T. Pacificus and O. Vulgaris. In nature, visual perception of species that live deeper is shifted towards the blue region. This is related to the fact that red, orange and yellow light is absorbed more strongly by water than the blue light. On the other hand, the visual perception spectrum of an animal is determined by the absorption spectrum of the "light sensor" located in rods and cones of its eye retina. These …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The Anthropogenic era marks the role of humans as agents of planetary modification. In this era, the search for sustainability in human-environment interactions has pushed the development of modeling techniques able to incorporate dynamic natural and human feedbacks across temporal and spatial scales. While researchers have refined models for both natural and human systems separately, the coupling of these systems via model integration continues to be a challenge. In response, researchers have concentrated their attention on how human decision-making processes respond to and affect the environment. New pathways to sustainability may be developed by examining how human culture informs the …

Analyzing The Relationship Between Climate, Vegetation Characteristics, And Water Use For The Oklahoma City Metro Area, Jennifer Koch, Tracy Boyer, Heather Mccarthy, Peter Kedron, Monika Ghimire, Qingtao Zhou
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Oklahoma’s highly variable weather and large precipitation gradient work together with population growth and urbanization to create a landscape that is extremely vulnerable to climatic extremes. As shown by the drought in 2011-2013, Oklahoma’s municipal water supply has come under stress from additional demand. To develop sustainable natural resource supplies that support a vibrant economy with healthy citizens, we need to develop robust understanding of these complex socio-environmental systems, which can be used to empower decision makers to effectively adapt to climate variability/change. For this purpose, we develop a spatio-temporal simulation model for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area, which helps …

New Insights On Secondary Minerals From Italian Sulfuric Acid Caves, Ilenia M. D'Angeli, Cristina Carbone, Maria Nagostinis, Mario Parise, Marco Vattano, Giuliana Madonia, Jo De Waele
International Journal of Speleology
Sulfuric acid minerals are important clues to identify the speleogenetic phases of hypogene caves. Italy hosts ~25% of the known worldwide sulfuric acid speleogenetic (SAS) systems, including the famous well-studied Frasassi, Monte Cucco, and Acquasanta Terme caves. Nevertheless, other underground environments have been analyzed, and interesting mineralogical assemblages were found associated with peculiar geomorphological features such as cupolas, replacement pockets, feeders, sulfuric notches, and sub-horizontal levels. In this paper, we focused on 15 cave systems located along the Apennine Chain, in Apulia, in Sicily, and in Sardinia, where copious SAS minerals were observed. Some of the studied systems (e.g., …

A Probable Case Of Incipient Speciation In Schizocosa Wolf Spiders Driven By Allochrony, Habitat Use, And Female Mate Choice, R. Tucker Gilman, Kasey Fowler-Finn, Eileen A. Hebets
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
There is growing evidence that speciation can occur between populations that are not geographically isolated. The emergence of assortative mating is believed to be critical to this process, but how assortative mating arises in diverging populations is poorly understood. The wolf spider genus Schizocosa has become a model system for studying mechanisms of assortative mating. We conducted a series of experiments to identify the factors that control mate-pair formation in a Schizocosa population that includes both ornamented and nonornamented males. We show that the population also includes two previously unrecognized female phenotypes. One female phenotype mates mostly or exclusively with …
