Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Linear (HR)n and cyclic [HR]n peptides (n = 4,5) containing alternate arginine and histidine residues were synthesized. The peptides showed 0–15% cytotoxicity at 5–100 μM in human ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) cells while they exhibited 0–12% toxicity in human leukemia cancer cell line (CCRF-CEM). Among all peptides, cyclic [HR]4 peptide was able to improve the delivery of a cell impermeable fluorescence-labeled phosphopeptide by two-fold. Fatty acids of different alkyl chain length were attached at the N-terminal of the linear peptide (HR)4 to improve the molecular transporter property. Addition of fatty acyl chains was expected to help with the permeation of the …

A Phenomenological Study Examining Dual Educators’ Perceptions Of Their Impact On Students’ Educational Experiences, Marisol Rodriguez
A Phenomenological Study Examining Dual Educators’ Perceptions Of Their Impact On Students’ Educational Experiences, Marisol Rodriguez
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Educators take second jobs for a variety of reasons and in a variety of fields. However, there is limited research on educators who choose to assume two roles within the educational system and who bridge two educational settings (i.e., post-secondary and university levels). This qualitative, phenomenological research study explored the lived experiences of such “dual educators” in Portland, Oregon, who have been teaching simultaneously in high school and college. Specifically, this study examined dual educators’ motivations to pursue these dual roles, their perceptions of the impact of these hybrid roles on their students, as well as other factors including the …

A Broad Spectrum Racemase In Pseudomonas Putida Kt2440 Plays A Key Role In Amino Acid Catabolism, Atanas D. Radkov, Luke A. Moe
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
The broad-spectrum amino acid racemase (Alr) of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 preferentially interconverts the L- and D-stereoisomers of Lys and Arg. Despite conservation of broad-spectrum racemases among bacteria, little is known regarding their physiological role. Here we explore potential functional roles for Alr in P. putida KT2440. We demonstrate through cellular fractionation that Alr enzymatic activity is found in the periplasm, consistent with its putative periplasm targeting sequence. Specific activity of Alr is highest during exponential growth, and this activity corresponds with an increased accumulation of D-Lys in the growth medium. An alr gene knockout strain (Δalr) was generated …
A Solid-State Theoretical And Experimental Analysis Of Nitroguanidine And Gunshot Residues, Rebecca Prendergast
A Solid-State Theoretical And Experimental Analysis Of Nitroguanidine And Gunshot Residues, Rebecca Prendergast
Theses - ALL
Low-frequency spectroscopic techniques, including terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and THz-Raman spectroscopy, are used in conjunction with solid-state density functional theory simulations to investigate the vibrational modes of the explosive propellant nitroguanidine and three gunshot residues. Terahertz spectroscopy and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy are used to probe these small organic crystalline systems because the low-frequency (sub-200 cm-1) spectra for these systems are either, in the case of terahertz, not yet published in the spectral range obtained in this work, or in the case of Raman, not focused on in the literature. Low-frequency spectra and the corresponding solid-state density functional theory simulations can provide …

Destruction Of Moving Leukemia Cancer Cells In An Extra-Corporeal System Using Continuous Low-Frequency Ultrasound, Dhairya Raval
Theses - ALL
Low frequency ultrasound has been used for therapeutic purposes since a long time. It is non-invasive and thus application for medical purpose is easier. This method has been used in labs for preclinical in-vitro settings to observe the effects of low frequency ultrasound sound on neoplastic cells lines. The human leukemia cell lines are sonic sensitive and when exposed to various low frequencies of ultrasound for an amount of time, can cause their lysis and decrease their viability. The project focuses on using low frequency ultrasound on syringe pump mediated flowing leukemia cell lines and see how much their sonic …

This study sought to connect the literature on Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) to the work on student-teacher interactions as well as STEM role models. Student and peer leader interactions were explored to determine the effect of these interactions on student learning outcomes. Students and their peer leaders were both asked to determine the student’s learning gains from the PLTL course. Perceived learning gains were measured using a modified version of the Student Assessment of their Learning Gains (SALG) instrument. Peer leader responses were paired with their student’s responses to determine differences in peer leader ability to discern learning gains, learning …
The Balance Of Poly(U) Polymerase Activity Ensures Germline Identity, Survival, And Development In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yini Li
Dissertations - ALL
Uridylation of RNAs has been found to be highly prevalent and conserved among eukaryotes. The untemplated addition of uridines to the 3' end of RNA molecules is catalyzed by poly (U) polymerase (PUP). Uridylation has a fundamental role in RNA decay. The emerging discoveries regarding uridylation emphasize a new layer of gene regulation, and therefore we were curious about the developmental consequences of such gene regulation. Here, we investigated the roles of three Caenorhabditis elegans proteins, with in vitro PUP activity, in germline development. PUP-1/CDE-1 and PUP-2 are known to target certain classes of small non-coding RNA, and the function …

Technology usage among students with disabilities continues to rise, yet teachers …
The Bio-Nano Interface: Investigating The Roles Of Nanoparticle Morphology, Microstructure, Optoelectronic Properties, And Surface Chemistry For Biological Applications, Liliana Karam
Dissertations - ALL
Colloidal semiconductive quantum dots (QDs) are nanomaterials that have provoked much interest in the field of nanotechnology in recent decades. Due to the quantum confinement effect, these materials have highly tunable optical and electronic properties that depend on the nanocrystal size, shape, and composition. Because of these properties, QDs are potentially useful for applications such as LEDs, lasers, in-vivo and in-vitro imaging, and other sensing technologies. The work in this thesis has three central focuses: 1. the design, synthesis and characterization of CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with rod-in-rod microstructures (QRs), 2. their use in bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) systems …
Cognitive, Emotional, And Contextual Factors Related To Delusional Ideation, Sharanjit D. Pujji
Cognitive, Emotional, And Contextual Factors Related To Delusional Ideation, Sharanjit D. Pujji
Theses and Dissertations
Our beliefs profoundly influence how we interact and understand the experiences we have and the world around us. However, some individuals may develop 'false' beliefs (i.e., delusions) that are not grounded in consensual reality that may create adversities for the individual or others. Although various theories have been developed relating to the formation and maintenance of delusions, explaining their origins, meanings, and precise influence is a difficult task due to the highly individualistic nature of beliefs. The current study examined a number of likely candidate processes suspected of contributing to the formation and maintenance of delusional ideation in a sub-clinical …

Dental calculus (calcified dental plaque) is prevalent in archaeological skeletal collections and is a rich source of oral microbiome and host-derived ancient biomolecules. Recently, it has been proposed that dental calculus may provide a more robust environment for DNA preservation than other skeletal remains, but this has not been systematically tested. In this study, shotgun-sequenced data from paired dental calculus and dentin samples from 48 globally distributed individuals are compared using a metagenomic approach. Overall, we find DNA from dental calculus is consistently more abundant and less contaminated than DNA from dentin. The majority of DNA in dental calculus is …
Regulations Of Pathogenic Cd4+ T Helper Lymphocytes In Inflammatory Diseases, Handong Zheng
Regulations Of Pathogenic Cd4+ T Helper Lymphocytes In Inflammatory Diseases, Handong Zheng
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In this comprehensive project, three interrelated studies with distinct foci were employed to understand the regulations of specific CD4+ T helper cell population in inflammatory diseases.
Pathogenic TH17 cells play an essential role in the initiation and development of both human multiple sclerosis (MS) and animal experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism by which the pathogenicity of TH17 cells is controlled in the autoimmune neuro-inflammation remains unclear. In aim 1, we revealed that lumican (Lum), an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, negatively regulates encephalitic TH17 cell responses. Our findings highlighted a TH17 cell-intrinsic effect of Lum in suppressing …
Relationship Between Aerobic Capacity And Episodic Memory In Older Adults, Nicole Henderson
Relationship Between Aerobic Capacity And Episodic Memory In Older Adults, Nicole Henderson
Master's Theses
The goal of this research was to examine the relationship between aerobic capacity and memory in older adults. Prior research demonstrated an age-related decline in episodic memory (memory for episodes and events), which may be partially due to a decreasing ability to engage in pattern separation – the ability to form new memories that are sufficiently distinct from prior memories. Studies in rodents suggested that aerobic exercise may improve pattern separation abilities in older animals, but similar research in humans is lacking. Here, I investigated whether individual differences on a memory test that taxes pattern separation were associated with differences …
Migration, Individualism And Dependency: Experiences Of Skilled Women From The Former Soviet Union In Silicon Valley, Ievgeniia Zasoba
Migration, Individualism And Dependency: Experiences Of Skilled Women From The Former Soviet Union In Silicon Valley, Ievgeniia Zasoba
Master's Theses
An academic dialog concerning the intersectionality of national origin, economic class and gender, as mutually constitutive elements of migration, set the context for my inquiry into the experiences of wives who are barred from paid labor by their restricted visa status. Guided by grounded theory, I conducted seventeen semi-structured qualitative interviews to examine ways in which a move to Silicon Valley under a restricted visa class changes the self-image of women, and how they evaluate this change. I found that the ambiguous agency construct of women socialized in the Soviet and post-Soviet eras facilitated their choice to migrate despite the …

Race And Gender In (Re)Integration Of Victim-Survivors Of Csec In A Community Advocacy Context, Joshlyn Lawhorn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I use feminist ethnography at a nonprofit organization to analyze the racialized gender in (re)integration of victim-survivors of commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). Critical race feminism and intersectionality are the theoretical frameworks to guide the analysis of community advocacy. The analysis considers two themes with various subsections that capture CSEC at the site. The first theme analyzes the definition, challenges, coordination and rhetoric of reintegration at the site. The second theme highlights the site’s racial identity, Black victimhood of victim-survivors of CSEC in the context of community, and racialized gender within reintegration. I discuss the strategic …

Impact Of Recirculating Nitrified Effluent On The Performance Of Passive Onsite Hybrid Adsorption And Biological Treatment Systems, Amulya Miriyala
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 25% of households in the U.S. treat their wastewater onsite using conventional onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS). These systems typically include a septic tank or a series of septic tanks followed by a soil absorption system. They effectively remove biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), fats and grease but are not designed to remove significant amounts of nitrogen. High nitrogen loading to coastal and ground waters can be dangerous to aquatic life and public health. Hence, there is a need for advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems that can effectively remove nitrogen. Making enhanced nitrogen removal for OWTS …

The objective was to observe the physiological acclimatization of the explorers using the following strategies: physical preparation, highcaloric nutritional intake, and the latest physiological monitoring and outdoor equipment. Anthropometric measures (dual x-ray absorptiometry), specific maximal aerobic test, maximal aerobic running speed test, submaximal aerobic cold testing, strength tests (grip strength, leg press and chin up), and endurance tests (bar suspension and chair position) were conducted pre- and post-expedition. Due to the sample size, a paired t-test was …
Experiences Explored Through The Prism: Out Gay And Lesbian Pathways To University Presidency, Patrick Englert
Experiences Explored Through The Prism: Out Gay And Lesbian Pathways To University Presidency, Patrick Englert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The profile of university presidents has changed very little in the past twenty-five years, with the majority being white males (Kim & Cook, 2013). The presence of the ‘lavender ceiling’ (Friskopp & Silverstein, 1995) in higher education is evidenced in there being less than one percent of university presidents who openly identify as lesbian and gay (L&G) (Rivard, 2014). Colleges and universities continue to be largely heteronormative and struggle to create safe, supportive, and just campuses; mirroring instead the bias and microaggressions that occur outside the insulated walls of academia (Bazarsky, Morrow, & Javier, 2015; Vaccaro, 2012).
This multi-case qualitative …
Stormwater Inputs In Urban Streams: Impact And Persistence Of Effects On Stream Temperature, Samuel Harrison Caldwell
Stormwater Inputs In Urban Streams: Impact And Persistence Of Effects On Stream Temperature, Samuel Harrison Caldwell
Theses - ALL
Stream temperature is an important metric for determining the health of a stream system, and derived from complex interactions between climate, weather, and local landscape characteristics. In urban areas, stream temperature is additionally influenced by impervious surfaces as well as stormwater infrastructure that translates water quickly to stream channels. Disentangling the impacts of spatial and temporal drivers of the stream temperature regime is therefore a complex task. To improve understanding of spatial and temporal variability in stream temperatures, we combined in situ stream temperature loggers with thermal infrared (TIR) imagery collected via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) along a 2.25 km …
Using Passive Acoustics To Infer Spawning Behavior And Phenology: A Case Study Of Haddock On Georges Bank, Elizabeth Mcdonald
Using Passive Acoustics To Infer Spawning Behavior And Phenology: A Case Study Of Haddock On Georges Bank, Elizabeth Mcdonald
Theses - ALL
Climate change has the potential to impact many aspects of an organism’s biology, including phenology, the timing of important biological events. The timing of reproduction and spawning events for commercially important fish species is a critically important area of research for fisheries management. Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) are commercially important as well as sound-producing, which allows for monitoring via non-invasive passive acoustics. This study presents an application of passive acoustic monitoring to a multi-year dataset to increase understanding of haddock sound production, as well as trends in spawning phenology and behavior. An automatic acoustic detector was able to identify haddock calls …
Computational Analysis Of Developmental Disorders In Children, Siri Chandana Sambatur
Computational Analysis Of Developmental Disorders In Children, Siri Chandana Sambatur
Theses - ALL
Early developmental disorders are common in children between the ages of 3 through 17. These developmental disorders begin at early ages and affect the day-to-day activities of children. These disorders also impact the growth and lifestyle of children. Most of the time these developmental disorders co-exist in children. The main focus of our research lies in Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Deletion syndrome (22q) and their co-occurrences.
Most child psychologists and pediatricians diagnose these disorders in children through parent-based surveys. Our research uses three different parent-based reports: (1) Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI), (2) Behavioral Assessment Schedule for Children (BASC), and …

A decline in dry season precipitation over tropical South America has a large impact on ecosystem health of the region. Results here indicate that the magnitude of negative trends in dry season precipitation in the past decades exceeds the estimated range of trends due to natural variability of the climate system defined in both the preindustrial climate and during the 850–1850 millennium. The observed drying is associated with an increase in vapor pressure deficit. The univariate detection analysis shows that greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing has a systematic influence in negative 30-year trends of precipitation ending in 1998 and later on. …

Accurate steering through crop rows that avoids crop damage is one of the most important tasks for agricultural robots utilized in various field operations, such as monitoring, mechanical weeding, or spraying. In practice, varying soil conditions can result in off-track navigation due to unknown traction coefficients so that it can cause crop damage. To address this problem, this paper presents the development, application, and experimental results of a real-time receding horizon estimation and control (RHEC) framework applied to a fully autonomous mobile robotic platform to increase its steering accuracy. Recent advances in cheap and fast microprocessors, as well as advances …
