Being Māori And Pākehā: Methodology And Method In Exploring Cultural Hybridity, Niki Grennell-Hawke (Ngai Tahu, Ngai Mutunga), Keith Tudor Dr
The Qualitative Report
This article addresses the first author’s experience of identifying as both Māori and Pākehā in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based on her own research using both kaupapa research theory and heuristic research method, and supervised by the second author, the article describes her negotiation of the experience of being a hybrid cultural subject and object, of belonging and not belonging. The article extends the practice and understanding of cross-cultural research on a number of levels: the intrapsychic (i.e., within the principal investigator herself), the interpersonal (i.e., between the researcher and supervisor), and the methodological (i.e., between an indigenous and a Western …

Co-Creating Our Lives, Performing Our Multi-Cultural Worlds, Aidah Nalubowa
Theses and Dissertations
In his Foreword for Theatre and Migration (Cox 2014), director Peter Sellars writes, “None of us are the picture in our passports” (viii). Neither are we the person that we look or sound like at first glance or the first meeting. Rather, who we are is shaped by among other factors our environment and cultural upbringing. Because traditionally people from different places perform and participate in social and cultural events that are naturally “scripted” differently, we are so much more than the pictures and names we carry on our identification documents. Migration, Sellars continues, is “one of the most basic …

Development Of Mof@Polymer Composite Materials Through Bottom-Up Self-Assembly Techniques, Roberto Christian Arbulu
Development Of Mof@Polymer Composite Materials Through Bottom-Up Self-Assembly Techniques, Roberto Christian Arbulu
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
MOF-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are a promising new class of MOF/polymer composite materials. Currently, fabrication of MMMs is based on top-down methods with limited control over MOF positioning, integration, or morphology. This work focuses on the growth of well-defined one-dimensional (1-D) MOF nanostructures within the pores of a nanoporous polymer template, either commercially available or through the self-assembly of block co-polymers having tailor-designed surface functionalities. Studies were conducted using zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polycarbonate track etched (PCTE) membranes, which demonstrated the feasibility of the outlined approach, and revealed the formation of distinct super- and nanostructures with controlled morphologies …

Journey Interrupted: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Miscarriage, Marit A. Watson, Vanessa D. Jewell, Sarah L. Smith
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Miscarriage is a significant life event that impacts occupational performance, identity, and competence and that influences perceptions of motherhood. Because of the lack of social rituals often attributed to the death of a loved one, miscarriages may result in disenfranchised grief, which impedes coping.
Methods: This phenomenological study explored the impact of miscarriage on relationships, perceptions of motherhood, and the meaning of occupation in the context of grief. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews (N = 4) and completion of a brief demographic questionnaire. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and reviewed to ensure accuracy. Using inductive thematic …

Frequent and Highly Aerobic Behaviors Likely Contribute to Naturally Occurring Stress, Accelerate Senescence and Limit Lifespan. to Understand How the Physiological and Cellular Mechanisms that Determine the Onset and Duration of Senescence Are Shaped by Behavioral Development and Behavioral Duration, We Exploited the Tractability of the Honeybee (Apis Mellifera) Model System. First, We Determined Whether a Cause-Effect Relationship Exists between Honeybee Flight and Oxidative Stress by Comparing Oxidative Damage Accrued from Intense Flight Bouts to Damage Accrued from D-Galactose Ingestion, Which Induces Oxidative Stress and Limits Lifespan in Other Insects. Second, We Experimentally Manipulated the Duration of Honeybee Flight Across …

A Math Research Project Inspired By Twin Motherhood, Tiffany N. Kolba
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The phenomenon of twins, triplets, quadruplets, and other higher order multiples has fascinated humans for centuries and has even captured the attention of mathematicians who have sought to model the probabilities of multiple births. However, there has not been extensive research into the phenomenon of polyovulation, which is one of the biological mechanisms that produces multiple births. In this paper, I describe how my own experience becoming a mother to twins led me on a quest to better understand the scientific processes going on inside my own body and motivated me to conduct research on polyovulation frequencies. An overview of …

Applications Of Big Knowledge Summarization, Ling Zheng
Applications Of Big Knowledge Summarization, Ling Zheng
Dissertations
Advanced technologies have resulted in the generation of large amounts of data ("Big Data"). The Big Knowledge derived from Big Data could be beyond humans' ability of comprehension, which will limit the effective and innovative use of Big Knowledge repository. Biomedical ontologies, which play important roles in biomedical information systems, constitute one kind of Big Knowledge repository. Biomedical ontologies typically consist of domain knowledge assertions expressed by the semantic connections between tens of thousands of concepts. Without some high-level visual representation of Big Knowledge in biomedical ontologies, humans cannot grasp the "big picture" of those ontologies. Such Big Knowledge orientation …

Image classification is an active and rapidly expanding research area in computer vision and machine learning due to its broad applications. With the advent of big data, the need for robust image descriptors and learning methods to process a large number of images for different kinds of visual applications has greatly increased. Towards that end, this dissertation focuses on exploring new image descriptors and learning methods by incorporating important visual aspects and enhancing the feature representation in the discriminative space for advancing image classification.
First, an innovative sparse representation model using the complete marginal Fisher analysis (CMFA-SR) framework is proposed …
Theoretical Studies Of Photoinduced Dynamics And Topological States In Materials With Strong Electron-Lattice Couplings, Linghua Zhu
Dissertations
First, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of photoinduced phase transitions in charge ordered (CO) systems with a strong electron-lattice interaction and analyze the interplay between electrons, periodic lattice distortions, and a phonon thermal reservoir. Simulations based on a tight-binding Hamiltonian and Boltzmann equations reveal partially decoupled oscillations of the electronic order parameter and the periodic lattice distortion during CO melting, which becomes more energy efficient with lower photon energy. The cooling rate of the electron system correlates with the CO gap dynamics, responsible for an order of magnitude decrease of the cooling rate upon the gap reopening. The work also …

Unconventional Natural Gas Industry Value Chain And Representative Companies, Ednilson Bernardes
Unconventional Natural Gas Industry Value Chain And Representative Companies, Ednilson Bernardes
Bureau of Business & Economic Research
This report defines a framework for the unconventional natural gas value chain and identifies representative companies in each stage, as per definition of the value chain adopted for the study. The main focus of the report is on major companies in the up and midstream stages of the value chain. However, the report presents major companies in stages further downstream covered by the study. The reason for the focus on up and midstream stages is two‐fold. First, given the current level of development of the unconventional natural gas value chain in the state, those are the stages where most opportunities …

Caloric Restriction Effects On Liver Mtor Signaling Are Time‐Of‐Day Dependent, Richa Tulsian, Nikkhil Velingkaar, Roman Kondratov
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
The regulation of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling contributes to the metabolic effects of a calorie restriction (CR) diet. We assayed the effect of CR on the activity of mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2) in the liver of mice at six different times across the day. CR effects on mTORC1 and mTORC2 activities were time-of-day dependent. CR induced mTORC1 activity at one time, reduced at two times and has no effect during other times. CR induced mTORC2 activity at one time of the day and has no effects at other times. Circadian clocks are implemented …

Investigating The Impacts Of Varying External Power On Bio-Electrochemical Denitrification, Autumn Lineback, Daqian Jiang, Taymee Brandon
2018 Undergraduate Research
Nitrate discharge leads to eutrophication, the largest water quality problem globally. Eutrophication results in "dead zones" in oceans and considerable economic loss. Bio-electrochemical denitrification is a promising solution because bacteria directly use electrons to reduce nitrate and produce nitrogen gas.
