Galactose is an abundant monosaccharide found exclusively in mammals as galactopyranose (Galp), the six-membered ring form of this sugar. In contrast, galactose appears in many pathogenic microorganisms as the five-membered ring form, galactofuranose (Galf). Galf biosynthesis begins with the conversion of UDP-Galp to UDP-Galf catalyzed by the flavoenzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM). Because UGM is essential for the survival and proliferation of several pathogens, there is interest in understanding the catalytic mechanism to aid inhibitor development. Herein, we have used kinetic measurements and molecular dynamics simulations to explore the features of UGM that control the rate-limiting step (RLS). We show that …

A series of four- and five-coordinate Ni(II) complexes CztBu(PyriPr)2NiX (1–3 and 1·THF–3·THF), where X = Cl, Br, and I, were synthesized and fully characterized by NMR and UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. The solid-state structures of 1–3 reveal rare examples of seesaw Ni(II) complexes. In solution, 1–3 bind reversibly to a THF molecule to form five-coordinate adducts. The electronic transitions in the visible region (630–680 nm), attributed to LMCT bands, for 1 → 3 exhibit a …

Evaluation Of Oncolytic And Immunomodulatory Potential Of The Hsv-1 Live-Attenuated Vaccine Strain Vc2 In An Immunocompetent Murine Melanoma Model, Natalie Wall Fowlkes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Melanoma accounts for 90% of skin cancer-related deaths in humans. Treatment options for metastatic melanoma in people is very limited. Melanoma is considered to be an immunogenic tumor, spurring interest in development of immunotherapies for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Oncolytic virotherapy has been widely investigated. The first ever oncolytic virotherapy to receive FDA-approval is an HSV-1-based virus (Talimogene Laherperavec (T-Vec) or Imlygic) containing a transgene for human GM-CSF to enhance anti-tumor immune responses after injection. Durable response rate in human patients was only 16% despite impressive efficacy in anti-tumor effects in vitro and in murine tumor models. Novel viruses …
The Effect Of Caregiver Feeding Education On Dementia Patient Weight, Elizabeth Marks Cortright
The Effect Of Caregiver Feeding Education On Dementia Patient Weight, Elizabeth Marks Cortright
DNP and Student Works
Dementia is associated with deterioration in memory and cognition which can be severe enough to diminish a person's capacity to perform everyday activities including eating. Maintaining sufficient nutritional intake for dementia patients requires skilled knowledgeable caregivers. The focus of this project was to develop an evidence-based feeding protocol to assist caregivers in providing optimal nutrient intake of dementia patients, to evaluate changes in staff knowledge, and to determine the impact on dementia patients' meal intake percentage and weights through chart review. Dementia typically causes a decline in both cognitive and physical abilities leading to functionality and self-care limitations. Dorothea Orem's …

Interrogation Of Protein Function With Peptidomimetics, Olapeju Bolarinwa
Interrogation Of Protein Function With Peptidomimetics, Olapeju Bolarinwa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proteins can be described as the “machineries” responsible for almost all tasks in the levels of organizational complexity in multi-cellular organisms namely: the cells, tissues, organs and systems. Any disorder in the function of a protein at any of these levels could result in disease, and a study of protein function is critical to understanding the pathological features of the disease at the molecular level. A quick glance at these abundantly present proteins reveals two striking features: large diversity of biological function, and the variations in structural complexity, which varies from simple random coils, to turns and helices, and on …

Social Support And Self-Management Behaviors Among Emerging Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Kendra Kamp
Social Support And Self-Management Behaviors Among Emerging Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Kendra Kamp
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
Self-management of chronic conditions is increasingly critical as individuals spend less time in healthcare systems and must learn how to manage their disease (through behaviors such as medication adherence and diet modification) at home instead (Grady & Gough, 2014). Factors that influence self-management, such as social support, are important for understanding how nurses can intervene to improve self-management among patients with chronic conditions (Gallant, 2003). While research demonstrates the importance of social support for self-management among older adults with chronic conditions, limited information is available on emerging adults with chronic conditions who experience developmental transitions which may influence social support …

A Temperate And Wholesome Beverage: The Defense Of The American Beer Industry, 1880-1920, Lyndsay Danielle Smith
Dissertations and Theses
For decades prior to National Prohibition, the "liquor question" received attention from various temperance, prohibition, and liquor interest groups. Between 1880 and 1920, these groups gained public interest in their own way. The liquor interests defended their industries against politicians, religious leaders, and social reformers, but ultimately failed. While current historical scholarship links the different liquor industries together, the beer industry constantly worked to distinguish itself from other alcoholic beverages.
To counter threats from anti-alcohol groups, beer industry advocates presented their drink as a wholesome, pure, socially and culturally rich, and economically significant beverage that stood apart from other alcoholic …

How Effective Is Intravenous Ketamine Compared To No Medication/Placebo In Reducing Suicidal Ideations In Adults?, Elena Kirilova Taneva-Cholakova
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Suicide is a major public health problem with limited pharmacological options to treat acute risk. Every 40 seconds someone in the world commits suicide, WHO says. Lately, the dissociative anaesthetic Ketamine, has been studied as a potential short-acting treatment for suicidal ideations. Although promising, the available literature is still inconclusive.

A Documentary-Material Approach For Performance, Marc Kosciejew
A Documentary-Material Approach For Performance, Marc Kosciejew
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This article begins a conceptual discussion about the relationship between documentation, performance, and materiality. It argues that a documentary approach helps show the roles played by documents and practices with them in performance’s materialization and constitution. It presents the start of a documentary approach for analyzing performance by discussing some ways in which documentation helps provide a material basis for performance beyond its enactment whilst simultaneously materializing and constituting it in and for other diverse contexts.

Eleven Years Of Mountain Weather, Snow, Soil Moisture And Streamflow Data From The Rain–Snow Transition Zone – The Johnston Draw Catchment, Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed And Critical Zone Observatory, Usa, James P. Mcnamara
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Detailed hydrometeorological data from the rain-to-snow transition zone in mountain regions are limited. As the climate warms, the transition from rain to snow is moving to higher elevations, and these changes are altering the timing of downslope water delivery. To understand how these changes impact hydrological and biological processes in this climatologically sensitive region, detailed observations from the rain-to-snow transition zone are required. We present a complete hydrometeorological dataset for water years 2004 through 2014 for a watershed that spans the rain-to-snow transition zone (https://doi.org/10.15482/usda.adc/1402076). The Johnston Draw watershed (1.8km2), ranging from 1497 to 1869m in elevation, is …

Removal Of Total Dissolved Solids From Reverse Osmosis Concentrates From A Municipal Wastewater Reclamation Plant By Aerobic Granular Sludge, Do-Hyung Kim, Sangjin Park, Yeomin Yoon, Chang Min Park
Faculty Publications
Reverse osmosis (RO) has been widely utilized in water reclamation plants and produces a concentrated brine (or reject) stream as a by-product. RO concentrates (ROC) contain vast quantities of salts and dissolved organic matter, such as biomass and humic-like substances, which hinder biological wastewater treatment (such as biological nitrogen removal). In this study, we cultivated granular sludge in an aerobic sequencing batch reactor to treat municipal wastewater with an organic loading rate of 2.1–4.3 kgCOD/m3 day at room temperature (25 °C), and remove total dissolved solids (TDS) from ROC by biosorption, with aerobic granular sludge as a novel biosorbent. …

Generation Of Knockout Cell Lines To Investigate The Roles Of Cklf And Cry2 In The Regulation Of Circadian Clock, Thanuja Ramanna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Many physiological parameters such as body temperature, circulating hormone levels, blood pressure and metabolic activity are rhythmic, and their rhythmicity is governed by the circadian clock. This is a self-sustained ̃24-hour cycle, which at the molecular level is determined by negative transcriptional and translational feedback loops controlled by the products of core clock genes. There are at least 10 core clock genes namely Bmal1, Bmal2, Clock, Npas2, Per1, Per2, Per3, Cry1, Cry2, Nr1d1 and Nr1d2. In addition to these core clock genes, clock modifier genes exist that modulate the molecular clock by integrating synchronous and asynchronous clues from signal transduction …
Artificial Neural Network And Finite Element Modeling Of Nanoindentation Tests On Silica, Kianoosh Koocheki
Artificial Neural Network And Finite Element Modeling Of Nanoindentation Tests On Silica, Kianoosh Koocheki
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Two major forms of Silica include the crystalline form named Quartz which consist of the sand grains in nature, and amorphous form named Silica Glass or Fused Silica which is commonly known as glass. Fused Silica is an amorphous crystal that can show plastic behavior at micro-scale despite its brittle behavior in large scales. Due to the amorphous and ductile nature of Fused Silica, this behavior may not be explained well using the traditional dislocation-based mechanism of plasticity for crystalline solids. The crystal plasticity happens due to shear stress and stored energy in the material as dislocations which does not …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding Predator-Prey Relationships In A Changing Ocean: From System Design To Education, Ileana M. Freytes-Ortiz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Climate change is ecologically and socially complex, deemed the most important issue of our generation. Through this dissertation I have approached climate change research through an interdisciplinary perspective, investigating how this phenomenon will affect marine ecological systems, how we can better develop experimental systems to answer ecological questions, and how we can effectively educate about this issue.
In Chapter 2, I provided accessible alternatives for researching the effects of climate change (elevated temperatures and pCO2) on marine ecosystems. I designed, built, and troubleshooted two accurate and inexpensive climate-controlled experimental systems capable of maintaining target conditions: a temperature-controlled system and an …
Residual Effects Of Termiticides On Mortality Of Formosan Subterranean Termites, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki, In Substrates Subjected To Flooding, Rajani Sapkota
LSU Master's Theses
Formosan subterranean termites (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki) are one of the most important economic insects in the Southern US since they cause severe and costly damage to properties. Soil treatment with termiticides is the most widely used and reliable method for termite prevention, but their efficacy after a home floods, an all too common event for a homeowner in recent years, has prompted many pest control companies to suggest a new treatment is necessary. This can be expensive and possibly unnecessary. However, several factors such as termiticide water solubility and binding properties, soil type and soil leachability and the inherent …

Groundwater And Thermal Legacy Of A Large Paleolake In Taylor Valley, East Antarctica As Evidenced By Airborne Electromagnetic And Sedimentological Techniques, Krista Falcon Myers
LSU Master's Theses
During the Last Glacial Maximum, grounded ice in the Ross Sea extended into the otherwise ice-free McMurdo Dry Valleys, creating a series of large ice dammed paleolakes. Grounded ice within the mouth of Taylor Valley allowed for lake levels to reach elevations not possible at modern day and formed what is known as Glacial Lake Washburn (GLW). GLW extended from the eastern portion of Taylor Valley roughly 20 km west to a level ~300 m higher than modern day Lake Fryxell. The formation and existence of GLW has been debated, though previous studies correlate the timing of GLW with early …
Curve Tracking Control Under State Constraints And Uncertainties, Robert Kelly Sizemore
Curve Tracking Control Under State Constraints And Uncertainties, Robert Kelly Sizemore
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We study a class of steering control problems for free-moving particles tracking a curve in the plane and also in a three-dimensional environment, which are central problems in robotics. In the two-dimensional case, we provide adaptive controllers for curve tracking under unknown curvatures and control uncertainty. The system dynamics include a nonlinear dependence on the curvature, and are coupled with an estimator for the unknown curvature to form the augmented error dynamics. This nonlinear dependence puts our curvature identification objective outside the scope of existing adaptive tracking and parameter identification results that were limited to cases where the unknown parameters …

Ferns are the closest sister group to all seed plants, yet little is known about their genomes other than that they are generally colossal. Here, we report on the genomes of Azolla filiculoides and Salvinia cucullata (Salviniales) and present evidence for episodic whole-genome duplication in ferns—one at the base of ‘core leptosporangiates’ and one specific to Azolla. One fern-specific gene that we identified, recently shown to confer high insect resistance, seems to have been derived from bacteria through horizontal gene transfer. Azolla coexists in a unique symbiosis with N2-fixing cyanobacteria, and we demonstrate a clear pattern of cospeciation between …
