Pathophysiology Of Sepsis, Billie K. Newland Jul 2018

Pathophysiology Of Sepsis, Billie K. Newland

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency. In the United States, over 1.6 million hospitalizations and 250,000 deaths are attributed to sepsis each year. It is important that healthcare providers are aware of the signs/symptoms of sepsis because effective treatment depends on rapid recognition and treatment. Current quality improvement measures were used to investigate sepsis treatment recommendations. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commision (JC) recommend the use of Severe Sepsis/Septic Shock Early Management Bundle (SEP-1). The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) launched the Emergency Quality Network (E-QUAL) Sepsis Initiative as an addition to the SEP1 …

Brawls Bring Buzz: Male Size Influences Competition And Courtship In Diadasia Rinconis (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Avery L. Russell, Stephen L. Buchmann, William O. De Sabino, Daniel R. Papaj

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Sexual selection on male body size in species with a female-biased sexual size dimorphism is common yet often poorly understood. In particular, in the majority of bee species, the relative contribution of intrasexual competition and female choice to patterns of male body size is unknown. In this field study, we examined two possible components of male mating success with respect to body size in the solitary bee Diadasia rinconis Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Apidae): 1) ability to procure a mate and 2) the duration of copulation. We found that larger males were better able to procure mates and copulated for shorter periods …

Biodiversity And Conservation Study Of Chambers Island, Wisconsin - 2017 Annual Report, Mackenzie Hennes, Mikaela Nowak, Adam L. Brandt

Student Creative and Scholarly Works

Long term biological studies are rare but incredibly valuable for examining natural phenomena. Data collected over many years or decades allows for analyses of trends that would never be apparent in a single season. The research presented here is for the completion of the first field season in a long term study analyzing biodiversity trends on Chambers Island. Using visual searches, live trapping, and trail cameras, the biodiversity and abundance of species was examined. Special emphasis was placed on small mammals, though other species were observed and documented. The goals of this project were to (1) provide preliminary diversity and …

Introduction—Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-organ disorder characterized by chronic sinopulmonary infections and inflammation. Many patients with CF suffer from repeated pulmonary exacerbations that are predictors of worsened long-term morbidity and mortality. There are no reliable markers that associate with the onset or progression of an exacerbation or pulmonary deterioration. Previously, we found that the Mirc1/Mir17–92a cluster which is comprised of 6 microRNAs (Mirs) is highly expressed in CF mice and negatively regulates autophagy which in turn improves CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) function. Therefore, here we sought to examine the expression of individual Mirs within the Mirc1/Mir17–92 cluster in …

Glioblastoma Survival Outcomes At A Tertiary Hospital In Appalachia: Factors Impacting The Survival Of Patients Following Implementation Of The Stupp Protocol, Ogaga Urhie, Ryan Turner, Brandon Lucke-Wold, Walid Radwan, Janice Ahn, Kymberly Gyure, Sanjay Bhatia

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Glioblastoma is a fatal brain cancer with low median and yearly survival rates. The standard of care for treating glioblastoma is gross total resection (GTR) coupled with the Stupp protocol, but various factors influence the interventions undertaken and survival achieved. As health disparities exist in rural areas, survival in these areas need to be assessed in order to understand which factors detract from the successes of these standard medical interventions. We retrospectively determined the impact of age of diagnosis, number of lesions, the molecular marker O6-methylguanine methyltransferase (MGMT), extent of surgery, and completion of the Stupp protocol on survival among …

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Modulates The Effect Of Estrogen In Human Osteoblasts, Duangrat Tantikanlayaporn, Irina L. Tourkova, Quitterie Larrouture, Jianhua Luo, Pawinee Piyachaturawat, Michelle R. Witt, Harry C. Blair, Lisa J. Robinson

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Production of sphingosine‐1‐phosphate (S1P) is linked to 17β‐estradiol (E2) activity in many estrogen‐responsive cells; in bone development, the role of S1P is unclear. We studied effects of S1P on proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts (hOB). Ten nM E2, 1 μM S1P, or 1 μM of the S1P receptor 1 (S1PR1) agonist SEW2871 increased hOB proliferation at 24 hours. S1PR 1, 2, and 3 mRNAs are expressed by hOB but not S1PR4 or S1PR5. Expression of S1PR2 was increased at 7 and 14 days of differentiation, in correspondence with osteoblast‐related mRNAs. Expression of S1PR1 was increased by E2 or S1P …

Effects Of Cytochrome P450 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Methadone Metabolism And Pharmacodynamics, Taha Ahmad, Monica A. Valentovic, Gary O. Rankin Jul 2018

Effects Of Cytochrome P450 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Methadone Metabolism And Pharmacodynamics, Taha Ahmad, Monica A. Valentovic, Gary O. Rankin

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Methadone is a synthetic, long-acting opioid with a single chiral center forming two enantiomers, (R)-methadone and (S)-methadone, each having specific pharmacological actions. Concentrations of (R)- and (S)-methadone above therapeutic levels have the ability to cause serious, life-threatening, and fatal side effects. This toxicity can be due in part to the pharmacogenetics of an individual, which influences the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the drug. Methadone is primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, predominately by CYP2B6, followed by CYP3A4, 2C19, 2D6, and to a lesser extent, CYP2C18, 3A7, 2C8, 2C9, 3A5, and 1A2. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) …

Synergistic Effect Of Black Tea Polyphenol, Theaflavin-3,3'-Digallate With Cisplatin Against Cisplatin Resistant Human Ovarian Cancer Cells, Haibo Pan, Jin Li, Gary O. Rankin, Yon Rojanasakul, Youying Tu, Yi Charlie Chen

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Theaflavin-3, 3’-digallate (TF3) is a phenolic compound extracted from black tea. We previously demonstrated that TF3 selectively inhibited ovarian cancer cells. Ovarian cancer has high death rate because of acquired cisplatin resistance. We aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of TF3 and cisplatin (CDDP) against cisplatin resistant ovarian cancer cells. In the present study, combination treatment with TF3 and CDDP showed a synergistic cytotoxic effect in A2780/CP70 and OVCAR3 cells. Combination treatment showed a synergistic pro-apoptotic effect and synergistically induced G1/S phase cell cycle arrest. Synergistic apoptosis was accompanied by regulating protein expression of cleaved caspase 3/7, cytochrome c, Bax …

Pathophysiology Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Sarah Buck Davis Jul 2018

Pathophysiology Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Sarah Buck Davis

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders and is one of the most common reasons gastroenterology referrals are placed. IBS causes abdominal pain and is associated with altered bowel habits (Dlugosz, Zakikhany, Acevedo, D'Amato, & Lindberg, 2017, p. 1). While the pathophysiology of IBS is still being explored, it is multifactorial, and recent studies have shown that inflammation and immunological alterations play a role in the development of IBS (Dlugosz et al., 2017, p. 1). IBS causes abdominal pain and discomfort, negatively affects patients’ quality of life, and contributes to increased anxiety and depression. …

Multiplicity Results Of Multi-Point Boundary Value Problem Of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Equations, Kamal Shah, Salman Zeb, Rahmat Ali Khan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This article is concerned to study the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions to a class with multi-point boundary conditions of nonlinear differential equations having fractional order. Where the nonlinear term is a continuous function. Sufficient conditions for multiplicity results of positive solutions to the problem under consideration are obtained by using Leggett - Williams ’s fixed point theorem. Further, the generalization of the concerned results are also obtained for more than three positive solutions. For the demonstration of our results, we provide an example.

A Novel Feature Selection Algorithm For Coronary Artery Disease Prediction, K. Uma Maheswari, A. Valarmathi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Cardiovascular disease is the predominant cause of death throughout the world. In the present era, many diseases are caused by gene transformation. Asian Indians have a higher chance of having cardiovascular disease as compared to any other global population. Identifying relevant and candidate genes for classification of samples is a tedious task when dealing with gene expression data analysis. The objective of this paper is to find the relevant genes responsible for causing coronary artery disease. In this paper we developed a novel feature selection algorithm based on fold change and p-value. Instead of selecting genes randomly our proposed method …

Oscillation Criteria For A Class Of Nonlinear Neutral Generalized A−Difference Equations, Adem Kılıcman, P. Venkata Mohan Reddy, M. Maria Susai Manuel

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we study the oscillation of the second-order nonlinear neutral generalized a−difference equation of the form Da(ℓ)(a(n)Da(ℓ)(x(n)+d p(n)x(n−t ℓ)))+ f (n, x(n−s ℓ))−g(n, x(n−rℓ)) = 0. We obtain the oscillation criteria and provide some examples to illustrate the results.

Unsteady Flow Of A Microstretch Fluid Through State Space Approach With Slip Conditions, S. A. Slayi, E. A. Ashmawy Jul 2018

Unsteady Flow Of A Microstretch Fluid Through State Space Approach With Slip Conditions, S. A. Slayi, E. A. Ashmawy

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper deals with the study of unsteady microstretch Couette and Poiseuille fluid flows between two infinite parallel plates. Analytical expressions for the velocity, microrotation and microstretch of the fluid flows are obtained using Laplace transform together with state space approach. The slip boundary conditions for both velocity and microrotation are applied at the boundaries. The inversion of Laplace transform of the flow field is obtained numerically using a standard numerical technique developed by Honig and Hirdes. The effects of the physical parameters on the velocity, microrotation and microstretch are discussed through graphs.

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi Jul 2018

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper explores the insights that hip hop might afford young adult library researchers who study information behavior, particularly in online environments. A Critical Race Theory (CRT) approach was used to explain how existing information behavior models describe youth experiences in ways that mask their unique racialized experiences and culturally specific information-creating behaviors. Using CRT’s counter-storytelling method, a new model called INFLO-mation is introduced, featuring a continuum of information behaviors captured within three descriptive categories of creativity: Rhythm, Rhyme, and Remix (R3). Findings include a discussion the INFLO model, its classification scheme, and illustrative examples from contemporary teens’ …

Teaching The Doctrine Of The Family: A South African Example, Khumbulani D. Mdletshe, Michael A. Goodman

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Early in 2015, I visited my aunt’s home. She lives in one of the largest townships in South Africa, an urban residential area with a predominantly black African population. Townships often have higher unemployment, greater poverty, and younger populations than other areas in South Africa. Townships also tend to have higher levels of risk behaviors such as drug abuse, unprotected sex, and crime. This was my first visit to my aunt’s home in five years. As I entered the home, I noticed some young people I had never met. My aunt, who is in her early sixties, began to introduce …

Polymorphisms Within Ryr3 Gene Are Associated With Risk And Age At Onset Of Hypertension, Diabetes, And Alzheimer's Disease, Shaoqing Gong, Brenda Bin Su, Hugo Tovar, Chunxiang Mao, Valeria Gonzalez, Ying Liu, Yongke Lu, Ke-Sheng Wang, Chun Xu

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology

Background: Hypertension affects 33% of Americans while type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD) affect 10% of Americans, respectively. Ryanodine receptor 3 gene (RYR3) codes for the RYR which functions to release stored endoplasmic reticulum calcium ions (Ca2+) to increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Increasing studies demonstrate that altered levels of intracellular Ca2+ affect cardiac contraction, insulin secretion, and neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigated associations of the RYR3 genetic variants with hypertension, AD, and diabetes.

Methods: Family data sets were used to explore association of RYR3 polymorphisms with risk and age at onset (AAO) of hypertension, diabetes, and AD.

Results: …
