The Forest And The Trees: What Educational Purposes Can A Course On Christian Legal Thought Serve?, Randy Beck Sep 2018

The Forest And The Trees: What Educational Purposes Can A Course On Christian Legal Thought Serve?, Randy Beck

Journal of Catholic Legal Studies

(Excerpt)

In this short essay, I want to consider the educational purposes a course in Christian legal thought might serve. How could having such a course in the curriculum help accomplish the goals of legal education? One can understand why a law school with a Christian identity would want to offer this sort of course. Such law schools embrace a theology that helps adherents make sense of the world, including the world of human law. The less obvious question I want to consider is why a law school that does not subscribe to a particular theological understanding of the world …

A Current Assessment Of Legal Aid In Ontario, Frederick Zemans, Justin Amaral Sep 2018

A Current Assessment Of Legal Aid In Ontario, Frederick Zemans, Justin Amaral

Journal of Law and Social Policy

This article explores the development of legal aid services in Ontario over the past two decades. The authors find that per capita inflation-adjusted spending on legal aid services by the federal government has been in long-term decline (albeit with periodic upturns) with resulting negative impacts on access to justice for those in need of legal assistance. At the provincial level, since cuts made in the mid-1990s, financial eligibility guidelines have remained out of line with real measures of poverty, such as Statistics Canada’s low-income cut-offs, and per capita funding has only recently increased. The mix of legal aid service providers …

Artificial Intellegence And Policing: First Questions, Elizabeth E. Joh

Seattle University Law Review

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly larger role in all sectors of society, including policing. Many police departments are already using artificial intelligence (AI) to help predict and identify suspicious persons and places.1 Increased computational power and oceans of data have given rise to inferences about violence and threats.2 AI will change policing just as it will healthcare, insurance, commerce, and transportation. But what questions should we ask about AI and policing?

Optimizing Spacer Length For Positioning Functional Groups In Bio-Waste, Revathi Iyengar, Maria Faure-Betancourt, Saleh Talukdar, Jinting Ye, Abel E. Navarro Sep 2018

Optimizing Spacer Length For Positioning Functional Groups In Bio-Waste, Revathi Iyengar, Maria Faure-Betancourt, Saleh Talukdar, Jinting Ye, Abel E. Navarro

Publications and Research

The goal of this study was to determine the optimal chain length needed for tethering functional groups on bio-wastes. The purpose of modifying the surface of bio-waste is to improve their affinity for phenols. To this end, four different aminated green tea leaves, with the amine group located at the end of 6, 8, 10, and 12 carbons were synthesized. Green approaches to functionalization lead to fewer reactive sites. Optimizing spacer length is one way to ameliorate this. The aminated tea leaves were prepared by a tosylation reaction followed by displacement with a diamine used in excess. The tea leaves …

Digging Them Out Alive, Michael Millemann, Rebecca Bowman Rivas, Elizabeth Smith

Faculty Scholarship

From 2013-2018, we taught a collection of interrelated law and social work clinical courses, which we call “the Unger clinic.” This clinic was part of a major, multi-year criminal justice project, led by the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. The clinic and project responded to a need created by a 2012 Maryland Court of Appeals decision, Unger v. State. It, as later clarified, required that all Maryland prisoners who were convicted by juries before 1981—237 older, long-incarcerated prisoners—be given new trials. This was because prior to 1981 Maryland judges in criminal trials were required to instruct the jury …

A Jury Of Your [Redacted]: The Rise And Implications Of Anonymous Juries, Leonardo Mangat Sep 2018

A Jury Of Your [Redacted]: The Rise And Implications Of Anonymous Juries, Leonardo Mangat

Cornell Law Review

Since their relatively recent beginnings in 1977, anonymous juries have been used across a litany of cases: organized crime, terrorism, murder, sports scandals, police killings, and even political corruption. And their use is on the rise. An anonymous jury is a type of jury that a court may empanel in a criminal trial; if one is used, then information that might otherwise identify jurors is withheld from the parties, the public, or some combination thereof, for varying lengths of time.

Though not without its benefits, anonymous juries raise questions regarding a defendant’s presumption of innocence, the public’s right to an …
