Chandler V. Mississippi: Brief Of Amici Curiae Current And Former Prosecutors, Department Of Justice Officials, And Judges In Support Of Petitioner, Barbara L. Mcquade
Appellate Briefs
Amici are current and former federal, state, and local prosecutors, Department of Justice officials, and judges with experience prosecuting, establishing policy for prosecuting, and sentencing for violent crimes, including those committed by juveniles. Amici recognize the importance of fair and proportionate sentencing to the credibility of the criminal justice system and the need to balance the impact of the crime on victims and survivors with the characteristics of the offender, including youth and the possibility of rehabilitation. Amici believe that states have an obligation to provide minimal procedural safeguards to effectuate this Court's direction to reserve the ultimate penalty of …

Self-Defense And Culpability: Fault Forfeits First, Richard J. Arneson
San Diego Law Review
Under what conditions is it morally permissible to kill someone in order to save your own life—or the life of another who is threatened? There seem to be clear cases. Threatened by an assailant who is trying to kill you for no good reason, you may use lethal force if necessary to save yourself from death or serious injury from the assailant’s attack. Threatened with death in the form of an onrushing runaway truck, you may not save yourself by using a bystander or imposing on a bystander in a way that inflicts severe harm on her. In a justly …

The Effects Of Media Coverage On Mass Shootings In The United States, Lisa Chen
The Effects Of Media Coverage On Mass Shootings In The United States, Lisa Chen
Pop Culture Intersections
This paper discusses the effects media coverage and media portrayal have on mass shootings in the United States. As the occurrences of mass shootings in the United States have increased, the depiction of these events through news outlets, media stories and journal articles have also increased. With these devastating events on the rise, the perceived public safety within the nation is at stake. By evaluating the effects of media coverage on mass shootings, we are able to uncover whether it may be encouraging the increasing trend. Through the examination of multiple news articles, scholarly journals, and books through a behavioral …

The Baked-In Bias Of Algorithms, Lori Bowen Ayre, Jim Craner
The Baked-In Bias Of Algorithms, Lori Bowen Ayre, Jim Craner
Collaborative Librarianship
Algorithms are created by and used by humans in software programs and in everyday tasks. They are composed of input data, a series of steps, and output. When it comes to computer algorithms, we often see the results of algorithms but we don't see the processing steps or the input data that has determined the output. It is important to be aware that all these components are subject to mistakes and biases - the input data as well as the processing steps. For this reason, we should seek transparency in the algorithms that are put to use and which affect our …

An Examination Of Victimization Among Traditional And Non-Traditional Female College Students, Jasmine Spears
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine differences between traditional and non-traditional aged victims of sexual assault and their victimizations. This study uses sexual assault victimization data from the 2014 incident files of the National Incident Based Reporting System. From this data, three samples were constructed to look at sexual victimization in all locations, sexual victimization on college campuses, as well as victimizations that occur off campus. Additionally, the age of both victims and offenders are examined to see if there are differences between characteristics of sexual victimization offenses for those between the traditional college ages of 18 to …

Juvenile Justice Facilities: The Best Thing For Convicted Youths, Kristin Lee Arnold
Juvenile Justice Facilities: The Best Thing For Convicted Youths, Kristin Lee Arnold
Culture, Society, and Praxis
In today’s society, as soon as a child turns eighteen, they are legally considered adults and no longer need parental consent on matters. However, if eighteen is the standard age of the beginning of adulthood, why then, are more and more underage children being tried as adults, and if convicted, being sent to adult prisons? Society sets all of these age limits on what youths under eighteen can and cannot do, but when it comes to crime, apparently no age is too young to be considered an adult. In this paper I argue that children should not be tried as …

A Culture Of Resistance: An Ethnography Of Tampa Bay’S Racial Justice Activist Community, Emily Janna Weisenberger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Racial justice activists in Tampa Bay comprise a community and culture structured as a movement of social transformation. Data from eleven interviews and more than 100 hours of participant observation show that activists consist of a diverse array of Tampa Bay residents of varying ages, genders, sexualities, racial/ethnic identities and livelihoods. This community is best described by their beliefs and practices of ideology steeped in intersectionality and anti-capitalism, and are motivated by or empathetic to racial injustices directly experienced by them or those around them. The intention of this paper is to describe activists as they are rather than as …
