Education For Sustainability Policies: Ramifications For Practice, Deborah Moore, Sylvia Christine Almeida, Melissa M. Barnes
Education For Sustainability Policies: Ramifications For Practice, Deborah Moore, Sylvia Christine Almeida, Melissa M. Barnes
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
While it is well understood there is an urgent need to address global environmental problems, there is less understanding around how these problems can be addressed. At each level of government, policy is initiated as a response to a perceived problem. However, research has shown governmental policies are overly generalised which creates a universal approach, with little regard for contextual difference. This paper seeks to push back against unspoken assumptions surrounding Education for Sustainability (EfS) policy processes from development to implementation, showing that context is important in the interpretation of policy. Through a mixed method survey, the findings illustrate how …

"Professional Learning On Steroids”: Implications For Teacher Learning Through Spatialised Practice In New Generation Learning Environments., Jennifer Charteris, Dianne Smardon
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
There is growing interest in innovative educational space design and the relationality of spatialised teaching practices. This paper addresses the characteristics of spatialised professional learning in newly redesigned or purpose built new generation learning environments (NGLE). The case study is situated within Aotearoa/New Zealand context, a country where there has been considerable policy focus and investment in NGLE. Data from principals who have established NGLE in their schooling settings is analysed, with consideration given to the preparation of teachers to take up spatialised practices. The study highlights key characteristics of spatialised PLD practice – fostering spatial literacy; professional cross-pollination; co-teaching …

Two-Stage Feature Selection Using Ranking Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm For Recognition Of Acceleration Activity, Muhammad Noorazlan Shah Zainudin, Md Nasir Bin Sulaiman, Norwati Mustapha, Thinagaran Perumal, Raihani Mohamed
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Widespread research on activity recognition is becoming an imperative topic for improving the quality of human health. The fast development of sensing technology has become a fundamental platform for researchers to implement a system that could fulfill human needs. Due to privacy interests and low cost, wearable sensing technology is used in numerous physical activity monitoring and recognition systems. While these systems have proved to be successful, it is crucial to pay attention to the less relevant features to be classified. In such circumstances, it might happen that some features are less meaningful for describing the activity. Less complex and …

Extending Co-Citation Using Sections Of Research Articles, Arjumand Yar Khan, Abdul Shahid Khattak, Muhammad Tanvir Afzal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The excessive amount of digital information has made it crucial to extract the relevant information. This hinders researchers in finding documents pertaining to their research. There exist various state-of-the-art techniques, such as co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and their recent extensions like citation proximity analysis and citation order analysis, that recommend the relevant documents against the posed query. Most of these approaches are statistical in nature and thus can further be extended by incorporating some semantics to enhance the results. In this paper, we present an extension of a co-citation-based technique to identify the most relevant documents to co-cited document(s). The proposed …
Influence Maximization In Social Networks: An Integer Programming Approach, Muhammed Emre Keski̇n, Mehmet Güray Güler
Influence Maximization In Social Networks: An Integer Programming Approach, Muhammed Emre Keski̇n, Mehmet Güray Güler
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The use of social networks has been spreading rapidly in recent years. There is a growing interest in influence maximization in social networks, especially after observing that the effects of social events of the Arab Spring, Gezi events of Turkey, uprising in Ukraine, etc. have been built by the help of social networks. Consequently, many institutions like political parties or commercial firms are willing to spread their messages throughout social networks. There are many studies that concentrate on finding the most influential initial nodes, called seeds, which maximize the spread of an intended message over the social network. However, most …

Mythologies Of The Artist In Modern India: Cinema, Melodrama And Ravi Varma, Niharika Dinkar
Mythologies Of The Artist In Modern India: Cinema, Melodrama And Ravi Varma, Niharika Dinkar
Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although the Indian artist Ravi Varma (1948-1906) was much celebrated during his lifetime, and not quite forgotten after his death in 1906, in the last decade there has been a true revival of interest in his life and work. In 2008 Ketan Mehta directed a Hindi film Rang Rasiya (Colours of Passion) based on the life of the celebrated Indian painter.1 Another fictionalized biographical sketch of the artist, this time in book form, The Painter: A Life of Ravi Varma by Deepanjana Pal, followed in 2009 and was directed towards a broad audience. In 2010 a more scholarly treatment of …

Mapping Quality of Life in Nebraska
KEY POINTS AND IMPLICATIONS
Nebraska is a state that is not often viewed as affected significantly by mobility and migration. As a state, the net migration rate of 1.1 from 2015 to 2016 is fairly low compared to others like Florida (16.0) or Nevada (14.4). However, data from this report suggests that there is, in fact, substantial movement of people moving in and moving out; as well as pockets within the state where there is higher than average influx of both domestic and international migrants.
In general, migration trends in the state mirror national trends of “rural flight” where people …
Examining Whooping Crane Breeding Season Foraging Behavior In The Eastern Migratory Population, Hillary L. Thompson, Anik Levac, Megan J. Fitzpatrick
Examining Whooping Crane Breeding Season Foraging Behavior In The Eastern Migratory Population, Hillary L. Thompson, Anik Levac, Megan J. Fitzpatrick
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Agricultural fields may provide an important supplementary foraging habitat for whooping cranes (Grus americana) in the reintroduced Eastern Migratory Population (EMP). We developed methods and gathered preliminary data regarding whooping crane foraging efficiency and habitat use to better understand the use of agricultural fields by breeding cranes. We generated a simple null hypothesis that cranes would spend more time in the habitat type (wetlands vs. agricultural fields) in which they were able to obtain a higher foraging efficiency to maximize food intake, along with several alternative hypotheses pertaining to reasons cranes may prefer wetlands or agricultural fields during …

Successes And Challenges In Services For Victims Of Sex Trafficking: An Organizational Analysis, Annelieke Sinnema
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how the organization Calltofreedom, located in Sioux Falls South Dakota, works to rehabilitate victims of sex trafficking and how, what this organization offers fits with the needs these victims have. Secondly, this study looks at memorable messages clients of Calltofeedom receive that prevents or encourages them to heal after getting out of a trafficking situation. Sex trafficking is not only an international problem but a home-grown problem in the United States. Awareness about sex trafficking and needs of victims, especially in rural places, is still lacking. With this comes a lack in organizations that can help empower …

In FY2016, an estimated 638,568 individuals received day or employment supports from state IDD program agencies. This number grew from 455,824 in FY1999. The estimated number of individuals in integrated employment services increased from 108,227 in FY1999 to 120,244 in FY2016. Despite the trend to terminate facility-based services in some states, the overall state investment continues to emphasize non-work services, rather than integrated employment services. Figure 1 shows the trends in the percentage of people served in integrated employment and facility-based and non-work settings between FY2008 and FY2016.
Measuring The Capabilities Infrastructure: A County-Level Index Of Nonprofit And Private Sector Organizational And Physical Community Capital, Ryan Thomas Snow
Measuring The Capabilities Infrastructure: A County-Level Index Of Nonprofit And Private Sector Organizational And Physical Community Capital, Ryan Thomas Snow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Across the United States, citizens’ communities provide vastly different access to critical resources that can improve their personal, familial, and collective well-being. Yet, little is known about the organization of the physical and organizational resource infrastructure of these communities, limiting the ability of policymakers, researchers, and citizens to address uneven development, inequality, and poverty. Drawing on 2015 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) data, this research study creates a tool for measuring the nonprofit and private organizational and physical resource environment of communities at the county-level by aggregating establishment counts for 20 indicators into six standardized thematic dimensions to create …

African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Kim Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Underrepresented student populations are faced with numerous barriers and are often overlooked on many college campuses. The aim of this research was to better understand academic cohorts and if they help reduce some of the barriers faced by African American and first-generation students which can ultimately affect retention and persistence to graduation. In order to gather this information, interviews and surveys were conducted with students once enrolled in the foundations for academic success track (Fastrack) program at the University of Mississippi. Results from the interviews and surveys indicate that while the Fastrack program seemed to support successful social transitions for …

Paper Chase: Perceptions Of The Pursuit Of Academic Scholarly Productivity Among Faculty Writing Group Participants, Deidra Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This autoethnography uses the researcher’s personal journey from professional writer to emergent academic scholar to examine the perceptions of the frequent pursuit of academic scholarly productivity among faculty writing group (FWG) participants. The case study, based at a Southeastern U.S. research-intensive university, adds to extensive analyses of FWGs as a means of faculty development that positively influences the frequency of scholarly work; it is significant because unlike most studies on FWGs, this study focuses on understanding more deeply the sway that “publish or perish” directives hold on FWG participants, delving into faculty reactions to academe’s explicit pressures that professors regularly …

Analysis Of Prehistoric Ceramics From A Fourteenth-Century Native American House, Carter Robinson Site (44le10), Lee County, Virginia, Emily J. Warner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chiefdoms located on the frontier of the Mississippian world have not been examined in great detail, yet they have the potential to provide evidence for the emergence of hierarchy and the interaction of hierarchical and egalitarian societies. Frontiers can help identify the emergence and maintenance of power in southeastern chiefdoms. Carter Robinson (44le10) is a frontier site that can help understand the degree of interaction between hierarchical and non-hierarchical groups nearby. This thesis will analyze the ceramics at structure 6 based on the 2015 excavation at Carter Robinson located in Lee County, Virginia. The use of attribute and morphological analyses …

The Roads To Reversing Brexit: Local And Transnational Constitutional Principles, Robert L. Howse
The Roads To Reversing Brexit: Local And Transnational Constitutional Principles, Robert L. Howse
Faculty Articles
Support for Brexit as pursued by Prime Minister Theresa May is shaky and probably waning. An opinion poll conducted in August 2017 suggests that if another referendum on Brexit were to occur, the “Remain” side would win it comfortably. Moreover, as the government has pursued negotiations with Brussels on Brexit, its strategy has often been unclear and the “hard Brexit” approach of Britain—leaving without retaining access to the single market—has even less support than the general idea of Brexit and indeed is alarming to Britain’s business community. If these trends continue, and if a deal on Brexit that is acceptable …

With the recently released report of World Economic Forum on Global Human Capital Report (September 2017) with the subtitle “Preparing People for the Future of Work,” the need for human capital development cannot be overemphasized. The report has identified four elements of human capital. First, CAPACITY – Level of formal education of younger and older generations as a result of past education investment. Second is DEVELOPMENT – Formal education of the next generation workforce and continued upskilling and reskilling of the current workforce. Third is DEPLOYMENT – Skills application and accumulation among the adult population. Fourth is KNOW-HO W –Breadth …
Gender, Parasocial Interaction, And Nonverbal Communication: Testing The Visual Effect Of Sports Magazine Cover Models, Ben Wasike
Communication Faculty Publications
An experiment examined gender, parasocial interaction, and nonverbal communication regarding sports magazine cover models. Results indicate that a correlation exists among parasocial interaction, nonverbal communication, and gender, with female cover models eliciting larger effects on test subjects. However, gender did not correlate with parasocial interaction or nonverbal communication among the test subjects, contradicting extant literature. Also, the parasocial interaction and nonverbal communication measurement scales positively correlated. In conclusion, static images are reliable experimental stimuli for parasocial interaction studies and nonverbal measurement scales, and sports magazines are better served by featuring more women.

Prostitution And Public Policy. The Nordic Model Versus The Pimping Of Prostitution, Christopher A. Bagley
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
In this review of recent books on public policy and prostitution, Julie Bindel’s The Pimping of Prostitution is sympathetically reviewed. Her thesis, that the libertarian movement seeking to remove prostitution from legal and public policy spheres has done grave harm to the lives of boys, girls and women, is elaborated by quotations from her chapters. This book is an important resource for those who campaign for the rights of women and children to be free of commercial sexual exploitation. The reviewer offers a critical realist perspective on Bindel’s work, in advocating that future scholars should use her extensive research for …
