Ethnic Hierarchy In The Japanese Economy: Economic Effects Of Restricting Non-Japanese Workers To Occupational Niches (2018), Ryan Giannini
Ethnic Hierarchy In The Japanese Economy: Economic Effects Of Restricting Non-Japanese Workers To Occupational Niches (2018), Ryan Giannini
International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper will analyze the economic implications of restricting the occupational choices and social mobility of non-Japanese workers in the Japanese economy. The paper will begin by using labor market segmentation theory (LMS) and split labor market theory (SLM) as bases to explain why formal and informal occupational restrictions exist in Japan. After defining these theories, the paper will then explore the historical context behind Japan’s restrictive labor policies by reviewing literature on Japanese cultural and genealogical “homogeneity” and its effects on Japan’s immigration, integration, and labor policies. After identifying the cultural impetus behind labor restrictions, the paper will then …
Lawyers Serving Gods, Visible And Invisible, Jonathan R. Cohen
Lawyers Serving Gods, Visible And Invisible, Jonathan R. Cohen
UF Law Faculty Publications
A critique of the American legal profession can be framed through the metaphor of idolatry, specifically the proclivity of lawyers to serve visible rather than invisible interests in their work. This proclivity has ramifications ranging from broad matters like lawyers' responses to deeply embedded social injustices to specific matters such as the excessive focus on pecuniary interests in ordinary legal representation and the high level of dissatisfaction that many lawyers experience in their careers. Using as a lens biblical teaching concerning idolatry, this article begins by describing "visible" as opposed to "invisible" interests in the context of legal practice. It …
Terror By Telephone: Normative Anxieties Around Obscene Calls In The 1960s, Melissa Villa-Nicholas
Terror By Telephone: Normative Anxieties Around Obscene Calls In The 1960s, Melissa Villa-Nicholas
Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Faculty Publications
By 1967, telephone harassment complaints in the United States had hit an all-time high. Telephone companies, government officials, police, and media scrambled to make sense of and harness the surge in obscene calls. Such a phenomenon drew on the publics’ fears of an unknown and anonymous ‘pervert,’ which now had access to their private sphere through the technology of telephone calls. Previous research which had focused on obscenity laws and censorship with regards to cultural products, however neglects the gendered, sexual, and racialized implications of this historical episode of obscene calls. The discourse around obscene calls during the 1960s demonstrates …
The Relationship Between Professional Development Engagement And Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy, And Athletic Identity In College Students Vs. College Student Athletes, Ashley E. Janosko
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
There has been limited research that focuses on Division III college student athletes and the career development process. Although previous researchers have studied the relationship between athletic identity and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among college student athletes, results have been inconsistent, with different researchers finding inverse, positive, or no relationships between variables. In addition, numerous researchers have examined career development among college student athletes. However, there has been no research to date that studies professional development engagement (PDE) and college student athletes. In addition, the majority of career development studies involving college student athletes have focused on either Division …
Older Adult Men’S Emotional Bonds With Their Dogs, Ranell L. Mueller
Older Adult Men’S Emotional Bonds With Their Dogs, Ranell L. Mueller
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Knowledge of the deeper meanings of attachment to companion animals is limited, particularly in terms of older adults. This study employed a modified grounded theory method, a phenomenological lens and a life course perspective to gather and analyze data garnered from individual interviews and panel discussions in order to investigate the multiple dimensions of older adult men’s relationships with their companion animal dogs. Individual audio-recorded in-depth interviews and repeated panel discussions with a sub-group of the participants, convened as a panel over a three-month period, explored behavioral and emotional manifestations of attachment and the emotional bond to their companion animal …
The Debate That Never Should Have Been: Dworkin, Hart, And The Analytical Project, Allan C. Hutchinson
The Debate That Never Should Have Been: Dworkin, Hart, And The Analytical Project, Allan C. Hutchinson
Articles & Book Chapters
As with most other things, the fortunes of jurisprudence ebb and flow. After an extended period of scholarly dominance, the past few years have witnessed a relative decline in its significance and prominence. This is no bad thing because jurisprudence has been trapped in an increasingly narrow debate characterized by its esoteric confines and analytical ambitions-what is the nature of law? There appeared to be a brief moment when other more expansive and less restrictive options for disciplinary development seemed possible. However, any reports of the demise of analytical jurisprudence now seem premature: the posthumous publication of a dated essay …
Survey Research In The Arab World: Challenges And Opportunities, Lindsay J. Benstead
Survey Research In The Arab World: Challenges And Opportunities, Lindsay J. Benstead
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Survey research has steadily expanded in the Arab world since the 1980s. The Arab spring marked a watershed when surveying became possible in Tunisia and Libya, and questionnaires included previously censured questions. Almost every Arab country is now included in the Arab Barometer or World Values Survey and researchers have numerous datasets to answer theoretical and policy questions. Yet some scholars express the view that the Arab survey context is more challenging than other regions or that respondents will not answer honestly. I argue that this reflects biases of “Arab exceptionalism,” more than fair assessments of data quality. Based on …
Social Control, Family Structure, And Juvenile Delinquency In Fragile Families, Alison Van Glad
Social Control, Family Structure, And Juvenile Delinquency In Fragile Families, Alison Van Glad
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Families come in many different structures and sizes, therefore; it is critical to examine how families impact children. Empirical research has shown that a child’s upbringing has the potential to influence delinquent behavior. However, existing literature using Fragile Families has not tested this association at the most recent wave. This thesis examines the relationship between family structure, relationships with parents, conventional beliefs, parental incarceration and juvenile delinquency at age 15 using Hirschi’s social control theory. Data from year 15 of Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing is employed to test these relationships using ordinary least squares regression models. Models one through …
The Impacts Of Hiv-Specific Criminal Laws On Hiv Serostatus Disclosure, Risk Behaviors, And Hiv Testing, Shao-Chiu Juan
The Impacts Of Hiv-Specific Criminal Laws On Hiv Serostatus Disclosure, Risk Behaviors, And Hiv Testing, Shao-Chiu Juan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Before the advent of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), many states enacted and strictly enforced laws that criminalized HIV transmission. These laws were enacted to prevent HIV-infected individuals from knowingly transmitting the virus to the uninfected. Over the past two decades, however, questions have been raised regarding the effectiveness of HIV criminalization and its unintended consequences. For example, there is little evidence that the criminalization of HIV transmission has been effective in reducing the spread of the disease, particularly when compared to education and other prevention efforts. Moreover, stigmatization associated with criminalization may actually undermine public health efforts. The dissertation aims to …
From Bottle Rockets To Tomahawks : The Production Of Anti-Ship Missiles, Land Attack Cruise Missiles, And Short-Range Ballistic Missiles, Nolan Fahrenkopf
From Bottle Rockets To Tomahawks : The Production Of Anti-Ship Missiles, Land Attack Cruise Missiles, And Short-Range Ballistic Missiles, Nolan Fahrenkopf
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
What explains the variation in the sophistication of states military production capabilities? This dissertation analyzes this broader question by looking at the development of production capabilities of an arms sector that has required constant innovation—anti-ship missiles (ASMs), land attack cruise missiles (LACMs), and short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs). I theorize that military innovation is driven by a combination of supply-side factors involving scientific and technical (S&T) human capital and demand-side factors including security, economic, and normative motives. This dissertation explores the factors associated with the proliferation of ASMs, LACMs, and SRBMs as part of a three-essay dissertation. The chapters on ASMs …
The Influence Of Leader Behaviors And Individual Cultural Values On Interpersonal And Informational Justice Perceptions, David Swiderski
The Influence Of Leader Behaviors And Individual Cultural Values On Interpersonal And Informational Justice Perceptions, David Swiderski
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Leadership and culture are two constructs often studied along with organizational justice, however; much of the past research has focused on measuring these constructs broadly. By measuring these constructs at a more granular level, this study aims to explore the specific linkages between clarifying, supporting, and recognizing leader behaviors and their relationship with interpersonal and informational justice. Results from this study go beyond broader leadership theories by finding that clarifying, supporting, and recognizing leader behaviors are important for predicting interpersonal justice perceptions. In addition, clarifying and supporting leader behaviors were also important predictors of informational justice perceptions. No significant moderating …
Ethnic Identity Development Among 1.5 And 2nd Generation Immigrants Across Ten Years : A Discriminant Analysis, Hirah Mir
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Ethnic identity is a major component of the psychological development and well-being of adolescents and adults. In the United States, immigrants are often tasked with balancing their minority culture and a dominant White American culture. This study used the two-dimensional Racial/Cultural Identity Development (R/CID) Model to illustrate progression toward an integrated ethnic identity, in which individuals identify with and integrate their minority ethnic group and the dominant group. An integrated identity is achieved at the Integrative Awareness status of the R/CID Model. Individuals at this status are found to possess more psychological resources to cope with psychosocial crises as compared …
The Making Of Multicultural Korea : Religious Women's Discourses Towards Ethnic And Sexual Diversity, Gowoon Jung
The Making Of Multicultural Korea : Religious Women's Discourses Towards Ethnic And Sexual Diversity, Gowoon Jung
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A lively body of literature has explored the majority Korean public’s rapidly changing attitudes and opinions on immigrants and LGBT persons, drawing on large-scale quantitative data amidst the Korean government’s pro-multicultural policies and programs in the wake of neoliberal global pressure. In contrast to the scholarly endeavor to highlight the role of the government, another line of literature, so-called “the liberal-democracy thesis”, illuminates the important role of civil society actors such as non-government organizations and faith-based organizations to advocate minority rights and nurture a minority-friendly atmosphere. However, there have been few academic attempts to investigate the role of religious organizations …
College Choice In Distance-Based Nursing Programs, Jill Lansing
College Choice In Distance-Based Nursing Programs, Jill Lansing
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The expansion and diversification of postsecondary education in the United States has led to greater options for students and prospective students for pursuing a college degree. An important trend in higher education today is distance education. Despite the growing prevalence of distance learning opportunities and the expanding body of research on distance education, research on the college-going decisions of distance learners is sparse. As more students enroll in distance-based higher education programs, it is increasingly important to understand how and why students make the decision to enroll in collegiate degree-granting programs. This study bridges the college choice and distance education …
Intraethnic Discrimination And Psychological Distress : The Moderating Role Of Collective Self-Esteem Among Black Young Adults, Abigail Ingrid Nicolas
Intraethnic Discrimination And Psychological Distress : The Moderating Role Of Collective Self-Esteem Among Black Young Adults, Abigail Ingrid Nicolas
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The predominant focus of research examining the relation between ethnic discrimination and psychological distress among Black individuals has been on between-group, or interethnic, discrimination. Little is known about the impact of within-group, or intraethnic, discrimination. This study sought to serve as an initial investigation of the relation between intraethnic discrimination and psychological distress. Using social identity theory as a framework, it was posited that intraethnic discrimination experiences would result in psychological distress due to experience of in-group (Black) rejection and absence of in-group support for self-enhancement. Additionally, the study assessed the extent to which ethnicity-related identity collective self-esteem and private …
The Education Of Thomas Sweeny : A Case Study Of Education For The Poor In New York City, 1828-1845, Josie Madison
The Education Of Thomas Sweeny : A Case Study Of Education For The Poor In New York City, 1828-1845, Josie Madison
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation explores the education of one of the first inmates of the New York House of Refuge, the first juvenile reformatory in the country. The relationship between reformatory staff and inmates is considered, along with indenturing practices of the institution, including the practice of indenturing a significant number of boys to the whaling industry. In the case of Thomas Sweeny, the Refuge’s plan for reformation was successful because of the unique circumstances that led Sweeny to live for a time as a beachcomber in the islands of the South Pacific. His skill at acquiring languages and his ability to …
A Later Life Without Children In China : A Cross-Sectional Examination Of Moderators And Mediators Of The Effects Of Childlessness On The Well-Being Of Elders, Junrong Shi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Adult children played a primary role in support and caregiving for the fast-growing older population in China because of the core value of “filial piety” and underdeveloped formal services in the country. However, an increasing amount of Chinese people will end up with having no children in their later years, either nonparental or no children survived. It is important to understand that how the absence of children affects the health and well-being of older adults to better serve this growing vulnerable population. Limited previous studies focused on the childless older people in China, and little is known about the mechanisms …
Alumni And Named Structures : A Qualitative Analysis Of Major Gift Donors, Allison Cherkosly
Alumni And Named Structures : A Qualitative Analysis Of Major Gift Donors, Allison Cherkosly
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Reduced government support has caused higher education institutions to become more dependent on philanthropic contributions. Since the majority of funds come from a small number of donors (Longfield, 2014), it’s important to focus on the highest level of donors. However, there was a lack of research that specifically studied alumni major gift donors who name physical structures with their philanthropic gifts to their alma maters. My intent in developing this study was to fill this gap and help higher education institutions secure more funds.
Marriageable Us, Undesirable Them : Reproducing Social Inequalities Through Marital Boundaries, Yuching Cheng
Marriageable Us, Undesirable Them : Reproducing Social Inequalities Through Marital Boundaries, Yuching Cheng
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Previous efforts applying a one-identity-at-work model suggest that upward mobility serves as an engine for marital assimilation. This model allows for the identification of immigrant conditions for integration. However, it does not fully explain the racial and gender asymmetry associated with intermarriage. I am applying an intersectionality approach to addressing issues concerning when and how group differences affect the construction of marriageability, defined as marital boundaries based on us/ them distinctions. Drawing from interviews with 67 highly achieving, Chinese-speaking immigrants and their children residing in the San Diego area, I present evidence illustrating the interactive effects among race, ethnicity, nation, …
Socioeconomic Achievements Of Asian Americans In The 21st Century, Bo Zhou
Socioeconomic Achievements Of Asian Americans In The 21st Century, Bo Zhou
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation research is a comprehensive study of Asian Americans' socioeconomic achievements. It aims to measure changes of Asian Americans' socioeconomic achievements between 2005 and 2015, to examine the glass ceiling facing Asian Americans, and to evaluate the impacts of the Great Recession and concentration on occupational attainments of Asian Americans.
Race, Ethnicity, And The Great Recession : A National Evaluation Of Mortgages And Subprime Lending, 2004-2010, Meghan M. O'Neil
Race, Ethnicity, And The Great Recession : A National Evaluation Of Mortgages And Subprime Lending, 2004-2010, Meghan M. O'Neil
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The dissertation analyzes multilevel models to predict mortgage origination and the allocation of subprime credit pre-and-post Great Recession. With representative samples from two full years of mortgage applications filed in the top 100 U.S. metropolitan areas, the dissertation uncovers evidence of persistent disparities by race and neighborhood minority concentration despite controls for socioeconomic, demographic, assimilation and housing variables. Mortgage outcomes varied by applicant race, neighborhood racial composition and neighborhood racial change. Findings suggest evidence of Fair Housing Act violations and disparate impacts towards minority homebuyers and minority neighborhoods. Results lend support for spatial assimilation theories in explaining much of the …
From Jim Crow To Diversity : Racial Formation As Institutional Logic In The U.S. National Park Service, 1935-2011, Rick Caceres-Rodriguez
From Jim Crow To Diversity : Racial Formation As Institutional Logic In The U.S. National Park Service, 1935-2011, Rick Caceres-Rodriguez
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study uses the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) as case to study how racial formation in organizations is shaped by the changing institutional logics of race. It draws from the institutional logics perspective to advance theorizing on race in organizations as a multi-level process structured by societal race dynamics. It does so by studying three critical moments in the history of the NPS in which the organization was exposed, and had to respond to, varying logics of race.
Perceptions Of Justice : Views Of Jailed Defendants On Procedural And Distributive Justice, Kirstin Anne Morgan
Perceptions Of Justice : Views Of Jailed Defendants On Procedural And Distributive Justice, Kirstin Anne Morgan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The current study examines defendant perceptions of their recent experiences in one of two criminal courts in an urban-suburban county. Forty-three interviews were conducted with jail sentenced participants, during which they were asked about the perceived fairness of the case process and outcomes, as well as their relationship with their defense attorney for the case. This study was undertaken to answer four research questions: 1) Are the concepts of procedural and distributive justice related from the defendant perspective? 2) Are perceptions of procedural justice related to satisfaction with case outcomes? 3) Are perceptions of procedural justice related to satisfaction with …
"I Think That's Really What It Comes Down To, Is Intimacy": Lgbtq+ Polyamory And The Queering Of Intimacy, Emily Pain
"I Think That's Really What It Comes Down To, Is Intimacy": Lgbtq+ Polyamory And The Queering Of Intimacy, Emily Pain
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Polyamory is an intimate practice, identity, and philosophy that permits open and honest relationships with multiple partners and centers on values such as communication, trust, and egalitarianism. The limited body of existing research on polyamory has contributed important perspectives towards a sociological understanding of polyamorous relationship negotiations and family challenges; however, it has focused primarily on privileged groups, drawing participants from polyamorous communities that are largely comprised of white, middle-class, heterosexual cisgender men and bisexual cisgender women. LGBTQ+ (‘queer’) lives have been severely marginalized in this literature, reinforcing oppressive gender and sexual hierarchies and leaving many important questions unanswered. Moreover, …
From State Monopoly To Welfare Mix With Chinese Characteristics : The Political Economy Of Social Policy Reform In China, Xiaoye She
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
China’s social policy discourses have increasingly shifted towards a rights-based approach emphasizing equity and social justice. Under Xi Jinping’s leadership, the party-state promises to play a leading role in protecting the “basic rights” of housing, healthcare, and elderly care for all Chinese citizens. What does it mean for the urban poor and rural migrants, given the country’s deteriorating income inequality and widening rural-urban divide? How can we explain regional and local variations despite China’s authoritarian political structure?
The Criminological Implications Of Moral Foundations, Jasmine Renee Silver
The Criminological Implications Of Moral Foundations, Jasmine Renee Silver
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Judgments about morality play an important role in several areas of crime and justice. This dissertation applies Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory (MFT)—which posits that judgments about morality are intuitive and pluralistic—to develop a theoretical framework for understanding the role of moral cognition in shaping attitudes and behaviors related to crime and justice. I also draw on research suggesting that people make moral judgments separately about moral agents (e.g., offenders) and moral patients (e.g., victims). Specifically, via an offender-centered theoretical framework, I argue that endorsement of moral foundations that promote moral concerns that are specific to one’s ingroup (a binding motive) …
Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek
Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation contributes empirical analysis on the dynamics of security sector reform and aims to establish an understanding of the interplay between civilian governments, security forces and international actors in attempts to reform the security sectors of transitioning or reconstructing states. The need for reform programs aimed at boosting civilian control over state security forces has gained increased attention following the end of the Cold War, especially for states during regime transitions or post-conflict reconstruction. The record of success for these programs however remains inconsistent, and empirical scholarship aimed at the process at the time of writing is problematically sparse.
An Exploration Of Caregiver Engagement In Residential Treatment For Youth, Raquel Moriarty Derrick
An Exploration Of Caregiver Engagement In Residential Treatment For Youth, Raquel Moriarty Derrick
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Support for caregiver engagement in their child’s residential treatment is widespread and growing because of the benefits of caregiver engagement to a youth’s treatment process. This dissertation explores the construct of caregiver engagement, defined as caregiver motivation and expectation for their child’s treatment, caregiver bond with staff and caregiver collaboration on treatment goals and tasks among a cohort of 101 caregivers with a child in a Residential Treatment Center (RTC). Mixed methods were used to qualitatively and quantitatively explore caregiver perspectives and experiences that contribute to or detract from their level of engagement in their child’s treatment process. Findings reveal …
Now, Tomorrow, Forever The Persistence Of School Segregation In America, Dustin Connors
Now, Tomorrow, Forever The Persistence Of School Segregation In America, Dustin Connors
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision has long been heralded as a landmark ruling and as evidence of America's progress toward a more accepting and equitable society. What is less widely known outside of academic circles is the extent to which that ruling failed to provide the equality its supporters were seeking. Today, America is still wrestling with a crisis most of us thought long solved: the racial segregation within our school districts. In my documentary film entitled Now, Tomorrow, Forever: The Persistence of School Segregation in America, I will set out to explore the state …
Making Sense Of The Mix : Understanding The Role Of Family Dynamics In The Racial Identity Experiences Of Black-White Emerging Adults, Crystal Austin
Making Sense Of The Mix : Understanding The Role Of Family Dynamics In The Racial Identity Experiences Of Black-White Emerging Adults, Crystal Austin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As a population, Black-White (B-W) biracial individuals have been relatively overlooked and underserved in the psychological literature. Although some theoretical attention has been paid to the racial identity development of biracial individuals, research is lacking on the psychological processes influencing the identity experiences of these individuals (Rockquemore et al., 2009). Specifically, little is known about how adults’ family-of-origin dynamics influence the racial identity construction process of B-W individuals.
