A Novel Optimization Method For Solving Constrained And Unconstrained Problems: Modified Golden Sine Algorithm, Erkan Tanyildizi Jan 2018

A Novel Optimization Method For Solving Constrained And Unconstrained Problems: Modified Golden Sine Algorithm, Erkan Tanyildizi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recently, the metaheuristic optimization algorithms inspired by nature and different science branches have been powerful solution methods for unconstrained, constrained, and engineering problems. Various metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been proposed and they have been applied to problems in different fields. This paper proposes a novel optimization method based on a modified version of the Golden Sine Algorithm for solving unconstrained, constrained, and engineering problems. The basic idea behind the proposed modified Golden Sine Algorithm (GoldSA-II) depends on finding the optimum solution field in search space by using the decreasing pattern of the sine function and the golden ratio. The performance …

Trials By Peers: The Ebb And Flow Of The Criminal Jury In France And Belgium, Claire M. Germain Jan 2018

Trials By Peers: The Ebb And Flow Of The Criminal Jury In France And Belgium, Claire M. Germain

UF Law Faculty Publications

The participation of lay jurors in criminal courts has known much ebb and flow both in France and in Belgium. These two countries belong to the civil law tradition, where juries are the exception rather than the rule in criminal trials, and they only exist in criminal cases, not civil cases. In spite of some similarities, there are substantial differences between the two countries, and their systems will be examined in turn.

In France, the Cour d’assises itself was inherited from the French Revolution. Since a law of 1941, it is a mixed jury system, meaning that lay citizens sit …

Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen Jan 2018

Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen

UF Law Faculty Publications

From the biblical era through the present day, the conception of Israel as a people devoted to ethical ends has been a core Jewish value. But how is such a model to be implemented? This essay suggests two basic ways of thinking about ethical peoplehood, namely, that one can begin with a people and try to transform it into an ethical people ("from tribe to ethics") or that one can begin with ethical norms and through those norms attempt to build a people ("from ethics to tribe"). Part I of this essay begins by sketching these two modalities in Jewish …

Defamation Per Se And Transgender Status: When Macro-Level Value Judgments About Equality Trump Micro-Level Reputational Injury, Clay Calvert, Ashton T. Hampton, Austin Vining Jan 2018

Defamation Per Se And Transgender Status: When Macro-Level Value Judgments About Equality Trump Micro-Level Reputational Injury, Clay Calvert, Ashton T. Hampton, Austin Vining

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article uses the September 2017 defamation decision in Simmons v. American Media, Inc. as a springboard for examining defamatory meaning and reputational injury. Specifically, it focuses on cases in which judges acknowledge that plaintiffs have suffered reputational harm yet rule for defendants because promoting the cultural value of equality weighs against redress. In Simmons, a normative, axiological judgment--that the law should neither sanction nor ratify prejudicial views about transgender individuals-- prevailed at the trial court level over a celebrity's ability to recover for alleged reputational harm. Simmons sits at a dangerous intersection: a crossroads where a noble judicial desire …

Of Power And Process: Handling Harassers In An At-Will World, Rachel Arnow-Richman Jan 2018

Of Power And Process: Handling Harassers In An At-Will World, Rachel Arnow-Richman

UF Law Faculty Publications

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, companies have taken swift and severe disciplinary action against alleged harassers, raising questions in some instances as to whether their responses were justified. This Essay, prepared for the Yale L.J. Forum’s symposium on the sexual harassment scholarship of Professor Vicki Schultz, argues that balancing the goals of the #MeToo movement with principles of fairness to the accused demands attention to an overlooked aspect of the problem: the status of the alleged harasser. The background rule of employment at will, coupled with employer contracting practices and the law of sexual harassment itself, produces a …

A Theoretical Framework Of Sports Team’S Well-Being: An Integrative Perspective Of Emotional Intelligence And Equivocality On Trust And Happiness, Drew Sannes, Wooyang Kim

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Abstract – The purpose of this study is to develop and provide an integrative conceptual model of sports teams’ well-being to achieve a win-win situation of happiness for all stakeholders of sports teams, grounded in role theory and commitment-trust theory. We first conceptualized the well-being as an ultimate consequence by exploring sub-dimensions of happiness and provide relevant propositions linking with the respective antecedents. Second, we explored the effect of antecedents of sports team’s well-being in the spectrum of the anchor between positive and negative sides on the resultant outcomes – i.e., trust and happiness. Third, we examined the role of …

The Impact Of Open Educational Resources On Various Student Success Metrics, Nicholas Colvard, C. Edward Watson, Hyojin Park

ALG Legacy Reports

There are multiple indicators which suggest that completion, quality, and affordability are the three greatest challenges for higher education today in terms of students, student learning, and student success. Many colleges, universities, and state systems are seeking to adopt a portfolio of solutions that address these challenges. This article reports the results of a large-scale study (21,822 students) regarding the impact of course-level faculty adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER). Results indicate that OER adoption does much more than simply save students money and address student debt concerns. OER improve end-of-course grades and decrease DFW (D, F, and Withdrawal letter …

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

A complex critique of how society constructs women of color in the academy combines with deeply personal interludes and a polyphony of scholarly voices to demonstrate ways that their objectified bodies can not only resist but also improvise as they question what it means to be different.

Kendrick Lamar’S Collapsing Of Hip Hop Realness And Christian Identity, Matthew Linder Jan 2018

Kendrick Lamar’S Collapsing Of Hip Hop Realness And Christian Identity, Matthew Linder

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

In Danielle S. Macon’s "To Pimp a Caterpillar: Hip Hop as Vehicle to Spiritual Liberation through the Decolonization of European Ideology" about Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, she identifies Kendrick’s three-step process of liberation for African-Americans through spirituality: exhibition, revelation, and community orientation. I seek to place her analysis of Kendrick’s music within the context of Daniel White Hodge’s exploration of the neo-sacred secular in Hip Hop, a theological concept containing three elements: a belief that God is in all things, viewing life as having good and bad elements, and a rejection of religionism as the only way to …

Competencies And Strategies Utilized By Higher Education Leaders During Planned Change, Dawn Aziz Jan 2018

Competencies And Strategies Utilized By Higher Education Leaders During Planned Change, Dawn Aziz

Wayne State University Dissertations

In a mixed methods study designed to explore the competencies and strategies utilized by self-described successful leaders of public, four-year U. S. institutions, this study confirmed that there was little difference among academic and non-academic leaders in their approach to successful change beyond that found in terms of non-academic preference for resilience and an academic preference for personal learning. Both leaders (N=47) showed high agreement for the nine proposed competencies, five of which were statistically higher in perceived importance (personal learning, resilience, emotional engagement/creating a safe space, networking/coalition building, and project management). Adapting Bolman and Deal’s four frames (2013) as …

An Investigation Of The Interaction Between Organizational Culture And Knowledge Sharing Through Socialization: A Multi-Level Perspective, Ali Baker Jan 2018

An Investigation Of The Interaction Between Organizational Culture And Knowledge Sharing Through Socialization: A Multi-Level Perspective, Ali Baker

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge management (KM) has been determined by many researchers as one of the most important domains within the information systems (IS) field, and knowledge sharing (KS) has been identified as the most vital component of KM. Lack of KS within organizations has been approached from many perspectives. One perspective that has been outlined in recent studies is the organizational culture (OC) perspective, which examines the interaction between OC and KS behaviors. Although research has been conducted on OC and KS, the findings of recent studies have been contradictory. These conflicts were due to the different operationalization of KS. The purpose …

Exploring Generational Differences In Text Messaging Usage And Habits, Daniel Wayne Long

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Members of society today embrace multiple communication media for various purposes and intents. Text messaging has been identified as the medium of choice for continual relationship maintenance and text messaging from mobile devices overshadows all other media forms for the support of social connections. Text messaging is changing everything from how operators market their plans to how advertisers and service providers reach consumers. But just as technology usage of social media and internet access are different across generational boundaries, text messaging usage and habits may also be different for various generational groups. The majority of peer-reviewed research regarding text messaging …

The Influence Of Website Design On Online Trust In Electronic Commerce Retailing Environments, Dinesh Khialani Jan 2018

The Influence Of Website Design On Online Trust In Electronic Commerce Retailing Environments, Dinesh Khialani

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

E-commerce retail sales continue to experience significant growth in the United States (U.S.) annually. However, the contribution of e-commerce retail sales towards total retail sales in the U.S. remains low. Furthermore, the growth of e-commerce retail sales from year to year as a percentage of total retail sales in the U.S. is also fractional. The lack of online trust by consumers has been cited as a significant barrier to transacting online and a possible cause of this slow-moving trend.

E-commerce retail sales are paramount to the success and profitability of online merchants. It remains critical to understand the underlying determinants …

Virginia Woolf's Reading Notebooks, Brenda R. Silver Jan 2018

Virginia Woolf's Reading Notebooks, Brenda R. Silver

Dartmouth Scholarship

About the Book

When Virginia Woolf ended her thirty-year association with Bruce Richmond and the Times Literary Supplement, she commented in her diary that "I learnt a lot of my craft writing for him: how to compress; how to enliven; and also was made to read with a pen and notebook, seriously." Virginia Woolf's Reading Notebooks describes, dates, and identifies the sources of sixty-seven volumes of these notes. An indispensable tool for those who plan to consult the notebooks themselves, the book also illuminates, brilliantly, both the depth and breadth of Woolf's life-long love of reading and her passionate engagement …
