Mutual Gaze Among Strangers, Allie Vaknin Jan 2018

Mutual Gaze Among Strangers, Allie Vaknin

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reactions people experienced when engaged in extended eye contact with a stranger. Artist Marina Abramović and an organization entitled The Liberators International have demonstrated a spectrum of reactions, many emotionally-charged, that have occurred from the opportunity to sit across from and gaze into the eyes of a stranger. Current research on eye contact has been predominantly quantitative, with no available research that qualitatively investigates the scenario in focus. The design of this study involved interviewing 35 people who participated in "The World’s Biggest Eye Contact Experiment," where individuals paired with a …

Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez Jan 2018

Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Why do women and children join insurgency groups? The subject has been a matter of extensive debate, with experts offering theories of motivation on well-known groups such as the National Liberation Front (FLN) or the Irish Republican Army (IRA). However, there has been a small amount of work comparing two insurgency groups and their participants to one another. This paper addresses the underlying reasons for why women and children join insurgencies, explicitly focusing on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey from their origins to the present. The paper uses interviews from …

Naughty Or Nice: An Exploration Of Human Sexuality And Its Associations To Online Dating Behavior And The "Hook-Up" Culture, Ciara Peebles

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between human sexuality, online dating, and personality. The two sexual subcultures investigated were the hook-up culture (casual sexuality) and unconventional sexual subculture (such as fetishes). The first hypothesis was that one's casual sexuality would influence one’s online dating participation. The second hypothesis was that there would be gender differences between participation in casual sexuality and participation in unconventional sexuality. The third hypothesis was certain personality traits would influence whether they would participate both sexuality measures. The measures used for the survey were Online Dating Index, Brief Sexual Attitudes Scale, Big Five Inventory, …

A Content Analysis Of Jihadist Magazines: Theoretical Perspectives, Catalina M. Udani Jan 2018

A Content Analysis Of Jihadist Magazines: Theoretical Perspectives, Catalina M. Udani

Honors Undergraduate Theses

During its violent spread across the Middle East, the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) amassed both a local and international following in large part due to its usage of emergent media distribution. Beginning in 2014, ISIS’s Ministry of Media published an English-language magazine, Dabiq, disseminating its issues through online platforms. Dabiq and its successor Rumiyah both serve as propagandistic recruitment material for ISIS’s international community as well as broadcasting the message of the jihadist movement to ISIS’s enemies. This study analyzed ISIS’s publications using a qualitative content analysis in order to identify jihadist recruitment strategies through the perspectives …

Analyzing The Non-Mainstream Left And Populist-Radical Right: Do Party Promises For Women Actually Translate Into More Women Leaders And Members?, Brianna Bacigalupo

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Why are some parties referred to as “Männerparteien,” or men’s parties, while other parties are considered to be “female women-friendly”? This study incorporates a two-part model system to assess whether the ways in which party platforms exhibit gender ideology affects women’s leadership and membership in non-mainstream left (NML) parties and populist-radical right (PRR) parties. Using content analysis, this study analyzes election manifestos from a variety of parties within Europe in order to characterize the relative woman friendliness of the gender ideology. In turn, the study attempts to discover whether differences in gender ideology lead to differences in women’s access to …

Hip Hop, Religion And The Youth Of Romania: A Preliminary Study, Oana Alexandra Chirilă, Cassandra D. Chaney Jan 2018

Hip Hop, Religion And The Youth Of Romania: A Preliminary Study, Oana Alexandra Chirilă, Cassandra D. Chaney

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

For the past two decades, Hip Hop has attained a significant presence in Romania. The fall of Communism as well as growing social unrest has led a growing number of Hip Hop artists to incorporate strong Orthodox and nationalist messages into their lyrics. However, not all Hip Hop fans advocate this stance. This essay argues for an investigation of how Romanian youth respond to the religious and spiritual lyrics in Hip Hop. This mixed-methods study examines whether Romanian youth gravitate toward "spiritual-oriented messages or religious-oriented messages" and are thus, "hardcore listeners" or "casual listeners." The results of the study highlight …

"Is There A Heaven For A Gangsta?": Hip Hop, Spirituality, And Heaven, Cassandra D. Chaney Jan 2018

"Is There A Heaven For A Gangsta?": Hip Hop, Spirituality, And Heaven, Cassandra D. Chaney

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

A content analysis was conducted on the lyrics of 24 Hip Hop songs to identify how Black male Hip Hop artists discuss heaven. The songs were released between 1993 and 2015 and phenomenology was the theoretical foundation on which the themes were identified. I propose that Black Hip Hop artists create a heaven that reflects their own experiences, values, and traditions, envision a heaven where the weak and oppressed receive vindication from the indignities suffered on earth as well as a way to connect with dead loved ones. Essentially, Black Hip Hop artists’ expressions of heaven acknowledge racial experiences, demonstrates …

Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq Jan 2018

Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

The utilization of race as a proxy for evaluating different characteristics of others contains risk because it results in stereotyping and potential alienation of individuals from negatively judged groups. This concept motivated me to uncover the extent to which race affects intimate relationships amongst the historically opposed groups of blacks and whites in the United States. I am studying the historic racially-driven marginalization of blacks and the resulting relationship to recent dating and marriage patterns between black-white interracial pairs. I want to find out why the socioeconomic advantage held by whites is transmutated into dating culture, in order to understand …

An Explorative Investigation Of Referee Abuse In English Rugby League, Tom Webb, Mike Rayner, Richard Thelwell

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This article explored the experiences of 89 rugby league referees in England who undertook a mixed methods online survey from the January 9 to March 31, 2017. The results of the survey produced rich data from the open responses, and the quantitative measures are used to support these open responses. Findings identified an established culture of abuse towards referees, a refereeing workforce requiring greater support, better communication with the governing body and, therefore, revisions to existing policy and training. Conclusions identified specific recommendations and policy implications to improve the operational environment and working conditions and increased support for referees. Subscribe …

Vision, Voice, And Cinematic Presence, Constantine V. Nakassis, Amanda Weidman Jan 2018

Vision, Voice, And Cinematic Presence, Constantine V. Nakassis, Amanda Weidman

Anthropology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Anxieties around the appearance and audition of the female body and voice in Tamil cinema reveal a semiotic ideology of the image that does not fit neatly within the idea of cinema as representation. Instead, this ideology takes filmic images to be acts that performatively presence the actresses and singers who animate them, in other words morally charged acts for which such animators are held accountable. Drawing on linguistic anthropology and film theory, this article explores vision-image and sound-image as distinct modes of performative presence, noting the division of semiotic labor between them as well as their interaction and interdependence. …

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education In Saudi Arabia, Areej Abdullah Shafai Jan 2018

Servant-Leadership In Higher Education In Saudi Arabia, Areej Abdullah Shafai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Saudi Arabia is seeking to create more effective leaders who meet the highest needs of individuals without using their authority to complete tasks. When looking deeply at servant leadership approach in higher education in Saudi Arabia, no known studies reflected what is really happening in practice with Saudi higher educational leaders in terms of defining and providing service. To better understand their leadership methods, it is significant to address their ways of employing authority in their day-to-day operations since power is tightly linked to leadership. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of servant-leadership as it applies …

Exploring The Potential Of Using Undergraduates’ Knowledge, Skills And Experience In Research Methods As A Proxy For Capturing Learning Gain, Rebecca Turner, Carole Sutton, Reema Muneer, Claire Gray, Nadine Schaefer, Julie Swain Jan 2018

Exploring The Potential Of Using Undergraduates’ Knowledge, Skills And Experience In Research Methods As A Proxy For Capturing Learning Gain, Rebecca Turner, Carole Sutton, Reema Muneer, Claire Gray, Nadine Schaefer, Julie Swain

Plymouth Institute of Education

Learning gain is a politicised concept within contemporary HE, and as such has been aligned with agendas of teaching excellence and learning outcomes but the extent to which it captures actual learning has yet to be clarified. Here, we report the outcomes of a learning gain study which examines how students’ knowledge, skills and experiences as researchers develops throughout their studies. We examine data from a self-reporting survey administered across a university and college-based HE providers during students’ second year of undergraduate study. The data highlight disciplinary differences in student engagement with research methods and the significance of perceived relevance …

How Personal Names Shape The Way Society Sees People As Individuals In The United States., Rand Gabriel M. Buenaventura

UROP Posters

In a world where people are disadvantaged by first impressions and implicit bias, names factor a lot into a person’s successes in life. Whether it be first names, last names, the number of middle initials, the gender and racial implications of a person’s name, and societal standards surrounding names and naming systems, there are multiple ways names shape a person’s identity. Thus, it is important to ask how personal names shape the way people are seen as individuals in the United States and contribute to their identity. Names are a trait that people are born with, usually determined before anything …

Beyond The Bosses' Constitution: The First Amendment And Class Entrenchment, Jedediah Purdy Jan 2018

Beyond The Bosses' Constitution: The First Amendment And Class Entrenchment, Jedediah Purdy

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court’s “weaponized” First Amendment has been its strongest antiregulatory tool in recent decades, slashing campaign-finance regulation, public-sector union financing, and pharmaceutical regulation, and threatening a broader remit. Along with others, I have previously criticized these developments as a “new Lochnerism.” In this Essay, part of a Columbia Law Review Symposium, I press beyond these criticisms to diagnose the ideological outlook of these opinions and to propose an alternative. The leading decisions of the antiregulatory First Amendment often associate free speech with a vision of market efficiency; but, I argue, closer to their heart is antistatist fear of entrenchment …

The Craft Of Christian Higher Education, Susan M. Felch Jan 2018

The Craft Of Christian Higher Education, Susan M. Felch

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Although “the integration of faith and learning” quite rightly promotes holistic Christian higher education, the language itself may suggest two separate spheres that must be combined, thus subtly reinforcing the very dualism the phrase seeks to overcome. Understanding Christian higher education as a craft, situated within a tradition that extends historically across cultures but that is also locally inflected, counterbalances the abstract notion of “integration” by re-positioning our academic work as skilled labor. “Craft” focuses our attention on tradition, apprenticeship, well-chosen materials and tools, and artifacts, creating an image that can help to transform the modern university into an inculturated, …

Do Athletic Department Mission Statements Influence Employees’ Perceptions Of Psychological Contract Fulfillment?, Christopher R. Barnhill, Lauren Brown Jan 2018

Do Athletic Department Mission Statements Influence Employees’ Perceptions Of Psychological Contract Fulfillment?, Christopher R. Barnhill, Lauren Brown

Global Sport Business Journal

Mission statements are utilized by organizations to influence perceptions of key stakeholders, including employees. For more than two decades, scholars theorized mission statement content influenced employees’ psychological contract terms and perceptions of fulfillment although empirical research remained limited. Athletic department employees function to fulfill the mission of their department and host university. Utilizing a large sample of employees from National Collegiate Athletic Association athletic departments, this study explored how mission statement content influenced employees’ psychological contract terms and perceptions of fulfillment.

The Typology Of American Wnba Transnational Sport Labor Migrants, B. Nalani Butler Jan 2018

The Typology Of American Wnba Transnational Sport Labor Migrants, B. Nalani Butler

Global Sport Business Journal

Within the area of sport labor migration, the motivations of women athletes as sport labor migrants has been limited (Maguire, 2004). According to Maguire and Bale (2013), “sport labour migration is not, then, a uniform experience. It has its own political economy” (p. 77). Therefore, only understanding the experiences and motivations of men as sport labor migrants may leave many with a skewed perspective on the motivations of a sport labor migrant. Within this paper you will find an expanded typology of sport labor migration, which was created based on collected data from Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) transnational sport …

The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Work-Family Balance, Thembi Aquil, Ingrid Rader, Sandy S. Weiss, Russell Clayton

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Organizations benefit when employees are adept at understanding both the emotions of self and others, and how that understanding helps to successfully manage their personal and professional commitments. Given the characteristics of emotional intelligence (EI) and those maintaining a satisfactory work family balance (WFB), a positive relationship between EI and WFB was hypothesized. This quantitative study examined survey results from 189 adults working at least 20 hours per week to reveal a positive relationship between EI and WFB, and specifically EI and job performance.

Cluster-Based Network Proximities For Arbitrary Nodal Subsets, Kenneth S. Berenhaut, Peter S. Barr, Alyssa M. Kogel, Ryan L. Melvin

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The concept of a cluster or community in a network context has been of considerable interest in a variety of settings in recent years. In this paper, employing random walks and geodesic distance, we introduce a unified measure of cluster-based proximity between nodes, relative to a given subset of interest. The inherent simplicity and informativeness of the approach could make it of value to researchers in a variety of scientific fields. Applicability is demonstrated via application to clustering for a number of existent data sets (including multipartite networks). We view community detection (i.e. when the full set of network nodes …

Essays On Measuring Dynamic Community Responses To Environmental Events, Patrick Prendergast Jan 2018

Essays On Measuring Dynamic Community Responses To Environmental Events, Patrick Prendergast

Open Access Dissertations

One of the things that makes economics such an interesting social science sub-field to study is the analysis of unintended or unforeseen consequences. In order for policies to be efficient and equitable, it is important to first understand how endogenous policy decisions and exogenous events can affect communities either directly or indirectly. In this dissertation research, I examine how communities react to discrete environmental events over time. I do so in the context of tropical storm and hurricane activity in U.S. counties and media markets as well as land conservation spending decisions in Massachusetts and New Jersey municipalities. Using micro-level …

Collective Struggles: A Comparative Analysis Of Unionizing Temporary Foreign Farm Workers In The United States And Canada, Robert Russo Jan 2018

Collective Struggles: A Comparative Analysis Of Unionizing Temporary Foreign Farm Workers In The United States And Canada, Robert Russo

All Faculty Publications

The use of temporary foreign migrant workers in the labor sector is part of a vibrant political and legal discussion in both the United States and Canada. Current reforms of temporary foreign worker programs in both countries call for an analysis of this workforce. This article focuses on documented temporary foreign workers performing agricultural labor in both countries. It is a comparative study of alleged violations of documented temporary foreign farm workers' rights relating to unionization in the United States and Canada.
