Cacao Together: A Model For True Sustainability In The Chocolate Industry, Kerstin Roos Jan 2018

Cacao Together: A Model For True Sustainability In The Chocolate Industry, Kerstin Roos

Capstone Collection

This Course Linked Capstone provides a critical analysis of the concept of sustainable development and then uses this analysis to create a social venture plan for a non-profit called Cacao Together. This capstone project will identify challenges in the sustainable use of cacao by first critiquing the mainstream sustainable development initiatives of certification schemes and corporate sustainability programs. It then offers an alternate framework through the 5 Capital Livelihood assessment tool which when applied, shows the gaps in cacao sustainability initiatives generally. I then propose a social venture that will addresses the needs of many parts of the chocolate supply …

Western Appearance Culture, Media, And The Body As A Project, Sophie Serna Jan 2018

Western Appearance Culture, Media, And The Body As A Project, Sophie Serna

Undergraduate Review

In our contemporary appearance culture, media has been complicit in convincing women that the body is a measure of overall happiness and one’s value to society. Because of this it should be viewed as a project that needs constant attention and upkeep. This research explores the way the media, and more specifically, health and fitness magazines, address the body as a project with endless room for improvement. Believing that the human body can be molded and significantly transformed can lead to unrealistic expectations, causing many women to feel negatively about themselves. Through a textual analysis of the U.S. magazine Health …

Menace Ii Society: A Social Learning Perspective, Jowaun Gamble Jan 2018

Menace Ii Society: A Social Learning Perspective, Jowaun Gamble

The Graduate Review

Aker’s social learning theory predicts why crime occurs due to differential association, reinforcement, definitions and modeling. According to this theory, crime is a learned behavior through socialization agents and observations of peers. In the film Menace II Society, the protagonist, Caine Lawson, wants a way out of the Los Angeles projects after growing up in the gang lifestyle. Applying social learning theory to the film Menace II Society will analyze how Caine learned deviant behavior through modeling, definitions, reinforcement and differential association throughout his life. Also, the theory will explain how his intimate peer group influenced him to engage in …

Balancing Local Tradition And Global Influences: Design And Business Education For Traditional Artisans In Kachchh, India, Ruth Clifford Jan 2018

Balancing Local Tradition And Global Influences: Design And Business Education For Traditional Artisans In Kachchh, India, Ruth Clifford

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the craft-rich region of Kutch, western India, and the historical sari weaving town of Maheshwar, central India, two institutes are providing design and business education to traditional artisans. These are Somaiya Kala Vidya (SKV) and The Handloom School (THS); they form case studies for my PhD research. SKV encourages students to focus on their traditional designs believing them to be their unique selling point, but to innovate upon these traditions making them relevant to contemporary markets. Graduates face challenges of balancing the maintenance of the traditional aspects of their craft, their identity and integrity, with urban and global market …

Cottage Industry As Social Practice: Sustainability Of Handweaving In The Post-Industrialist Era, Maggie Leininger Jan 2018

Cottage Industry As Social Practice: Sustainability Of Handweaving In The Post-Industrialist Era, Maggie Leininger

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

India to Appalachia: How Cottage Industries Preserve Textile Heritage examines the role of the hand weaver and the cottage industry from India to the American Craft Revival in promoting cultural identity through textiles. The migratory nature of textile production both in the pre-and post-industrial practices has long challenged the notion of a pure textile heritage for any culture. However, with the almost simultaneous appearance of Khadi production in India and the American Craft Revival of Appalachia, the allure of the homespun as a cultural asset became a mechanism to offset the impact of textile industrialization. As urban centers increased in …

The Role Of Piay In Elementary School: The Perceptions Of Students, Aaron Skjerseth Jan 2018

The Role Of Piay In Elementary School: The Perceptions Of Students, Aaron Skjerseth

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study is a look into students' views surrounding play and its place in the elementary classroom. The study was qualitative in nature and focused wholly on student interviews and their viewpoints and opinions on the subject. From these interviews, four broad themes were established. These themes revealed that students found play to be crucial in developing and maintaining friendships, destressing throughout the day, keeping up focus during lessons, and finally, there needs to be more play in schools. These themes suggest play should be taken more seriously in the classroom, as students view it to be crucial in several …

Local Wear: A Chat About Textiles & The Body, Emily J. Pascoe Jan 2018

Local Wear: A Chat About Textiles & The Body, Emily J. Pascoe

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In this presentation, I propose that worn-in garments are a shared aspect of the relationship between humans and textiles, while also being unique to the user. The relationship between natural, cultural, and material forms, resulting in wear on textiles, begins with the human body. The human body is the most universal local. It is the essential qualifier to be a part of the human species. Although it is a biological form, how the body behaves, and the shapes it is molded into, are influenced by culture. The textiles that enclose the body accrue signs of the interactions. Even if the …

Sanquhar Gloves: An Exemplification Of Deep Local To Pan Global?, Angharad Thomas Jan 2018

Sanquhar Gloves: An Exemplification Of Deep Local To Pan Global?, Angharad Thomas

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Hand knitted gloves with unique patterning have been produced in the small Scottish town of Sanquhar for probably 200 years. They continue to be produced there today, demonstrating a “deep local” presence spanning many generations. Meanwhile, knowledge of the gloves has spread globally, including the English-speaking world as well as Europe and Scandinavia. Aided by modern social media they have become “pan global” as exemplified in the author’s blog documenting “The Glove Project” (https:knittinggloves.wordpress.com/), the Ravelry group dedicated to Sanquhar knitting (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/sanquhar-knitting-group) and an ongoing online exhibition for the Center for Knit and Crochet USA (http://sanquhargloves.centerforknitandcrochet.org). …

The“Specialness” Of Religious Conscience: An Egalitarian Response, Joseph Marsden Dunne Jan 2018

The“Specialness” Of Religious Conscience: An Egalitarian Response, Joseph Marsden Dunne

Wayne State University Dissertations

Religion is often singled out for special legal treatment in Western societies. This is certainly true in the United States where religion enjoys a special place in the First Amendment to the Constitution via the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses. Through Free Exercise guarantees, for example, the Supreme Court held in Wisconsin v. Yoder that Amish children were entitled to an exemption from compulsory school attendance laws after the eighth grade, emphasizing that this was a uniquely religious exemption that did not apply to everyone. Moreover, those conscientiously objecting to contemporary vaccination laws may find themselves with varying protections depending …

The Relationship Of Stem Attitudes And Career Interest, Eric Wiebe, Alana Unfried, Malinda Faber Jan 2018

The Relationship Of Stem Attitudes And Career Interest, Eric Wiebe, Alana Unfried, Malinda Faber

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examines the relationships between attitudes toward all core STEM subjects and interest in STEM careers among 4th through 12th grade US students through the administration of the Student Attitudes toward STEM (S-STEM) Survey to over 15,000 public school students. The research developed a model based on expectancy-value theory that incorporates key demographic factors of age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Our findings reinforce prior research that students across key demographic factors perceive biological/clinical and physical science career paths differently, resulting in two career clusters. Of interest, the relationship of mathematics attitudes to career interest varied by STEM career cluster. Findings …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Satellite imagery reveals flowstripes on Foundation Ice Stream parallel to ice flow, and meandering features on the ice-shelf that cross-cut ice flow and are thought to be formed by water exiting a well-organised subglacial system. Here, ice-penetrating radar data show flow-parallel hard-bed landforms beneath the grounded ice, and channels incised upwards into the ice shelf beneath meandering surface channels. As the ice transitions to flotation, the ice shelf incorporates a corrugation resulting from the landforms. Radar reveals the presence of subglacial water alongside the landforms, indicating a well-organised drainage system in which water exits the ice sheet as a point …

Mother-Infant Interactions In A Wild Population Of Macaca Nemestrina (Linnaeus), Emily M. Dura, Lori K. Sheeran, Nadine Ruppert, Clay P. Arango, Sofia K. Blue Jan 2018

Mother-Infant Interactions In A Wild Population Of Macaca Nemestrina (Linnaeus), Emily M. Dura, Lori K. Sheeran, Nadine Ruppert, Clay P. Arango, Sofia K. Blue

Student Published Works

Until now, mother-infant relationships have not been studied in a wild population of the Southern Pig-tailed Macaques Macaca nemestrina. We observed six mother-infant dyads from April 2016 to September 2016 in the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia using focal sampling methods from the perspectives of both individuals. We hypothesized that as infant age increased, the same important mother-infant behaviours, previously observed to change in captive pig-tailed macaque mother-infant studies, would also change over time in field conditions. We expected that as the infant ages, mothers would decrease their rates of restraint and retrieval, and increase their rates of …

Nontraditional Service In Academic Libraries For Student-Parents, Julie D. Carmen Jan 2018

Nontraditional Service In Academic Libraries For Student-Parents, Julie D. Carmen

Library Scholarship

This paper represents research about student services offered by academic libraries. The student services are in response to the growing number of nontraditional students identified as student-parents across the United States, England and Wales. Family-friendly spaces are examined, as there are several academic libraries now offering these spaces for student-parents with small children. A meta-analysis was used combining information found in journals about higher education, sociology, library science and family learning. This paper will review literature on the topic of student-parents and provide recommended practices on issues of service to young children, family parking, lactating/changing rooms, 24/hour chat and online …

North Carolina's Research Triangle Park: A Success Story Of Private Industry Fostering Public Investment To Create A Homegrown Commercial Park, Morgan P. Abbott

Campbell Law Review

Research parks across the globe have attempted to duplicate North Carolina's Research Triangle Park Few, however, have achieved its size, scale, and success. Understanding the success of Research Triangle Park, or recreating it elsewhere, requires understanding the Park's beginnings. By detailing the Park's history, this Article examines how the Park's early transformation from a for-profit venture to a non-profit enterprise fostered the collaboration between government, business, and area universities necessary to the Park's longevity and success. Although the Park's unique history did not create a blueprint for future parks to follow, important lessons from the Park's transition from a private …

The Student Debt Crisis And Political Polarization In The Millennial Generation, Dylan Wallace Jan 2018

The Student Debt Crisis And Political Polarization In The Millennial Generation, Dylan Wallace

Honors Undergraduate Theses

According to the Pew Research Center, the modern wave of political polarization began in 1994, and is the strongest today than it has ever been during the 23-year period. (2007) Polarization in the US party system is evidenced by several factors including: growing consistent partisan views, partisan antipathy, ideological bubbles, growing difference in preferences, a shrinking political center, and the lack of political compromise. (Pew Research Center 2014) The question I attempt to answer in this thesis is on the factors associated with political polarization within the millennial generation. One of the most pressing issues to this generation is what …

The American Dream Short-Lived: The Decline Of Academic Achievement And College Confidence Through Acculturation, Perceptions Of Ethnic Discrimination, And Concerns With Confirming Stereotypes, Alexis N. Miller Jan 2018

The American Dream Short-Lived: The Decline Of Academic Achievement And College Confidence Through Acculturation, Perceptions Of Ethnic Discrimination, And Concerns With Confirming Stereotypes, Alexis N. Miller

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In this exploratory study, the goal was to examine patterns of perceived ethnic discrimination, stereotype confirmation, and acculturation within the context of a diverse, inclusive university. It was predicted that reported rates of perceived ethnic discrimination would be low, but the majority of students would still experience some type of discrimination at least once. The second hypothesis for this study was that higher levels of discrimination, acculturation and stereotype confirmation would result in lower levels of college self-efficacy and GPA. These factors were also predicted to be positively associated with each other as well. The personality trait, conscientiousness was predicted …

When The Clocks Strike Thirteen: Political Repression In Modern America (1990-2015), Faiza Begani Jan 2018

When The Clocks Strike Thirteen: Political Repression In Modern America (1990-2015), Faiza Begani

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Abounding acts of repression committed in democracies have continued to be overlooked and under-analyzed by many researchers and scholars due to "democratic exceptionalism". As the United States enters yet another consecutive year of declining political satisfaction and freedom. It has become pertinent that as conflict study researchers, scholars, and readers alike that there is a basic understanding of coercion including acts that have been committed within our own countries. Countless scholars have focused conflict study research on underdeveloped or emerging democracies, yet many have overlooked the seamy side of developed ones. This article aims to explain the relationship between the …
