The prevalence of substance use disorders remains high in the United States and healthcare professionals are largely ill-equipped to intervene with patients experiencing substance misuse or use disorders. To address this issue, substance abuse intervention curricula such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) are being integrated into university healthcare programs through the use of simulation to provide healthcare students with the necessary skills to address patient substance use. Teaching SBIRT with simulation provides students with an authentic clinical environment in which to learn and refine clinical skills. Simulation also supports reflective practice by providing an opportunity for …

One-Sentence, One-Word: An Innovative Data Collection Method To Enhance Exploration Of The Lived Experiences, Shannon L. Sibbald, Dylan Brennan, Aleksandra Zecevic
The Qualitative Report
Experienced-based methods are growing in popularity and are increasingly being utilized in a variety of research programs and investigations. They enable researchers and participants to co-design research strategies and outcomes and subsequently propose solutions to potential problems in the partnership. By applying an experience-based methods lens, we sought to augment traditional qualitative interviewing methodologies by using a novel method we named “one-sentence, one-word” (1S1W). To apply our 1S1W method, we used a phenomenological study that examined the relationship between the risk of falling and the desire of master athletes to engage in competitive sports. Participants reflected and recorded their subjective …

Implementation Of A Pediatric Post-Operative Hand-Off Tool: A Patient Safety Project, Kaye Remo
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: The clinical nurse leader (CNL) performed a microsystem assessment using the Dartmouth assessment tool to evaluate the microsystem’s readiness to provide safe care for pediatric post-operative cardiovascular patients. The microsystem is a 12-bed unit caring for critically ill pediatric patients requiring intensive monitoring and therapy. The microsystem’s interdisciplinary team is comprised of medical doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, nutritionists, child life specialists, and pharmacists. During assessment and gap analysis, the CNL identified gaps in nursing knowledge and skills to deliver safe care for this patient population during the immediate post-operative phase of recovery. There is a …
Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Social Environment, Gabrielle Lee, Kori Bloomquist
Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Social Environment, Gabrielle Lee, Kori Bloomquist
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
The purpose of this study is to explore and then narrate the lives of women of color from South Carolina and their personal experiences with regard to their social environments. Much adverse childhood experience research is focused on the immediate family system, and research regarding the social environment is typically broken down into segments, failing to address a more holistic approach to promoting child well-being. Using the ecosystems perspective as a framework for exploration, the researchers used a semi-structured interview schedule, the BFRSS ACEs Survey, and a resilience scale to collect data with participants. Using Facebook as a recruitment tool, …

A Community Under Attack: The Foundations And Development Of Islamism In London, Katherine Pye
A Community Under Attack: The Foundations And Development Of Islamism In London, Katherine Pye
Augsburg Honors Review
For nearly two decades, Islamic radicalization and the growth and development of global Islamism has dominated public media and policymaking discourse in Europe and America. Faced with terrorist attacks perpetrated by “home-grown” radicals, in Britain and across Europe and America, countering Islamic extremism from within has become a national and international priority. Hence, an understanding of what motivates some Muslims living in the west to reject so-called “western values” has been key. In the UK, government programs such as Prevent have sought, not uncontroversially, to identify “extremism” within communities before it becomes violent (Home Office 2011). Yet, overlooked in this …

Using Curriculum Mapping And Visualization To Maximize Effective Change, Kelli Schutte, Chris Mccullick, David Line
Administrative Issues Journal
This paper shares the process of developing a fully integrated assessment framework and model for a mapping curriculum. The foundational aspects of this model are the development of layered outcomes that occur at each level of the curriculum and the linking of courses together to ensure building blocks that are progressive within a program. The presented framework not only measures this integrated nature but also allows for assessment that is both summative and formative. A view of the different aspects of curriculum application—from knowledge building, application of knowledge, and transferability of knowledge to new contexts—is a focus of the course …

Personalistic Human Capital Management: Basic Conditions, Małgorzata Adamska-Chudzińska
European Management Studies
The article discusses the issue of personalistic human capital management. The argument is based on a new approach to the employee within an organisation, as well as the role of the subjective determinants of employee activity in the effective attainment of strategic goals. The essence of the personalistic approach to human capital within an organisation is presented through the prism of personalism, mainly the personalistic concept developed by K. Wojtyła (later John Paul II), emphasising the autonomous value of human being as a person. Against such a backdrop, it is shown that the application of the personalistic approach to human …
Growing Social Connection: A Case Study Of A Therapeutic Farm Community, Theresa Aldrich
Growing Social Connection: A Case Study Of A Therapeutic Farm Community, Theresa Aldrich
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This is a case study of a single therapeutic farm community with the goal of understanding the community as a whole organization. Therapeutic farm communities are largely under researched. The studies that do exist focus on evaluating client outcomes without adequate description of the organizations which produce the outcomes. To provide an in depth description of the therapeutic farm community which was selected for this case study, ethnographic research methods were utilized. Data analysis was conducted as an inductive process, drawing conclusions from coded and organized ethnographic field notes using postmodernism as a theoretical lens. This guided the interpretation of …
"This Doesn't Happen Here": Child Sex Trafficking In Rural Oklahoma, Denise Blum, Tania Benoiton, Sean Kinder
"This Doesn't Happen Here": Child Sex Trafficking In Rural Oklahoma, Denise Blum, Tania Benoiton, Sean Kinder
Administrative Issues Journal
The sex trafficking of minors is a hard-to-detect and underreported crime. Its insidiousness makes it exceedingly difficult to recognize, and treatment, once a victim is recovered, is long-term and costly. Urban areas are in the spotlight when it comes to the trafficking of minors. However, the unsuspecting rural context consists of specific dynamics that may make children in the countryside more vulnerable than in the city. Using the case of an Oklahoma town, the researchers conducted a presentation on child sex trafficking for school personnel at a K-8 rural school. They administered pre- and post-surveys and conducted follow-up interviews with …

Examing Patterns Of Intended Response To Tornado Warnings Among Residents Of Tennessee, United States, Through A Latent Class Analysis Approach, Jayme E. Walters, Lisa Reyes Mason, Kelsey N. Ellis
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
In the past five years, the southern region of the United States has had a large number of fatal tornadoes. Previous research indicates that residents of this area may not be taking appropriate shelter. The present study uses a random sample of Tennessee residents (N = 1126) and the latent class analysis (LCA) technique to explore discrete types of responders according to their pattern of intended behaviors when presented with a tornado warning scenario in the daytime or nighttime. LCA revealed three distinct groups in the day subsample – Tech Users, Typical Actors, and Passive Reactors – and three in …

Poverty And Eastern Kentucky School Districts: An Analysis Of Effective Interventions That Lead To Academic Success, Jessica Dobbs
Honors Theses
Poverty is a persistent cycle that plagues the United States, but specifically Eastern Kentucky. This is especially evident within the school districts there. This data was collected in order to help highlight the magnitude of poverty within Eastern Kentucky and its’ impact on the academic success of the students. When analyzing data from the Kentucky School Report Card from the 2016-2017 school year, twenty-four counties were identified as having at least 75% of the student population within the district qualifying for free & reduced lunch. After the identification of those twenty-four counties, the elementary K-Prep Proficiency and Distinguished scores for …

Research Brief (18-03)
Research has increasingly shed light on the precariousness of many households’ financial situations. For example, a large national survey showed that 41 percent of adults lack sufficient liquidity to cover even a modest $400 emergency without taking on debt or selling an asset; a problem that is exacerbated for lower-income households. Compounding this issue is the fact that financial shocks, such as the loss of income or a major car repair, are common; 60 percent of U.S. households reported a shock in the prior year at a median cost of $2,000.
We would expect that these indicators …

Since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, Lebanon is estimated to have taken in more than two million Syrian refugees. Due to policy and security obstacles, many of these refugees are considered by the Lebanese government to be living in Lebanon illegally, which restricts, among other aspects, their ability to continue employment or education. Based on field research conducted in-country through interviews, surveys, and focus groups, the authors have identified areas where innovative and inclusive higher education opportunities can be provided for Syrian refugees in Lebanon to allow them to move forward with their lives in self-sufficiency …

Assistant Principals And The Phenomenon Of Leadership Coaching, Thomas Flugum
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Dissertations
This study sought to define and explore executive leadership coaching as a form of professional learning for educational leaders. This was a qualitative phenomenological inquiry into the ways, if any, that leadership coaching impacts the skills and abilities of first-year assistant principals. Research was conducted with a cohort of newly appointed assistant principals from a suburban school district outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Participants were part of a district leadership academy which provided professional learning and support for new administrators. The participants received leadership coaching from coaches endorsed by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) as one form of professional learning.

Reports
During this first fiscal year of the evaluation process (FY 2015-2016), the Juvenile Justice Institute (JJI) worked with the University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T) and the Nebraska Crime Commission to develop and build the Juvenile Case Management System (JCMS). The JCMS is a secure data collection system that programs funded by CBA use to complete quarterly reporting requirements, which includes entering data for each youth who participates in the CBA-funded program. Each screen within JCMS was developed to specifically capture outcomes relevant to each program type (e.g., diversion, truancy, mentoring).

Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users Quality Of Life: Is Response Shift Supported?, Casey Faigle
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The use of home invasive mechanical ventilation (HIMV) has risen over the past ten years due to improved health outcomes, transitioning more complex care to the home, and evidence supports the benefits of this therapy. In order to plan care for this population, it is important to understand issues that affect an individual’s quality of life (QoL). Previous research provided mixed results, limited guidance of factors that affect QoL, and lacked a theoretical framework that lends questions to validity.
The first manuscript, Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users’ Quality of Life: A Review of Literature, provides a literature review of available …

Wartime activities determine the threats to a soldier’s life and health. To prepare soldiers for a new forms of warfare, one should know the challenges the soldier faces in the midst of battle and after returning home. From 2001 to 2015, 1.2 million American soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan used the health care services of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. An analysis of the resulting medical interventions makes possible a long term evaluation of the effects of war, some of which appear only after the soldier returns to civilian life. This study analyzes the research on the mental health …

Embracing Intersectionality To Create A Collective Living Theory Of Practice, Sara B. Woolf, Nathalis Wamba
Publications and Research
In this paper, we describe pivotal experiences that have shaped our respective professional journeys when teaching action research. We situate these experiences in relation to how they have contributed to our collective living theory of practice. This discussion unfolded as we explored ways to improve our own practices and the practices of our students. We conclude that this and similar questions can only be authentically answered when we as practitioners and faculty in higher education settings are willing to interrogate the contexts within which we interact and the complex intersections between our own intentional practices and selves and our students’ …
