The Effects Of A Flipped Classroom On Student Comprehension And Perception Among Second Language Learners In A Bachelor Of Social Work Course, Beverly Wagner Jan 2018

The Effects Of A Flipped Classroom On Student Comprehension And Perception Among Second Language Learners In A Bachelor Of Social Work Course, Beverly Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

This two phased action research study first explored obstacles to learning among second-language learners in a UAE undergraduate, social work course. This knowledge was then used in the modification of a flipped class approach to understand how this approach could influence student engagement and comprehension. This study was grounded in a sociocultural and student-centered learning theoretical framework, through first exploring the sociocultural influences and obstacles within a specific cultural context and modifying a student-centered learning approach based on this knowledge. Both phases were studied using a qualitative, ethnographic design.

Phase I sought to answer the following research questions: What are …

The Effect Of A Compassion Fatigue Awareness And Self-Care Skills Educational Program On Retention Among Certified Nursing Assistants Working In A Veterans Nursing Home, Michele M. Dreher Jan 2018

The Effect Of A Compassion Fatigue Awareness And Self-Care Skills Educational Program On Retention Among Certified Nursing Assistants Working In A Veterans Nursing Home, Michele M. Dreher

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Compassion fatigue is defined as the emotional and physical exhaustion that can affect helping professionals and caregivers over time. Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are at high-risk for compassion fatigue due to their daily exposure to those who are suffering from a myriad of chronic medical and behavioral illnesses along with repeated workplace stressors. If not addressed early, compassion fatigue can adversely impact a CNA’s wellbeing and quality of resident care. Compassion fatigue is associated with high absenteeism, high turnover, and low retention rates. Despite these challenges, there is no published research on the effects of a workplace compassion …

A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of School-Based Situational Crime Prevention Measures, Gary Zhang Jan 2018

A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of School-Based Situational Crime Prevention Measures, Gary Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there has been an expansion of situational crime prevention (SCP) measures in K-12 schools, including physical controls, law enforcement personnel, and security policies that are designed to prevent crime by modifying the situational features of school environments. Although SCP measures are now increasingly commonplace in schools, there is inadequate research demonstrating the need for SCP measures and their impacts on school crime. In particular, there is contradictory and inconclusive evidence of their effectiveness and research has largely been limited to examining aggregate outcomes through the use non-experimental, correlational designs. This dissertation aims to address these gaps in …

Implementation Of A Depression Screening Tool For Cardiovascular Patients In The Primary Care Setting, Amber Nicole Ballentine Jan 2018

Implementation Of A Depression Screening Tool For Cardiovascular Patients In The Primary Care Setting, Amber Nicole Ballentine

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) have a two-fold increased risk of depression as compared to patients without CVD. According to the American Heart Association (AHA, 2016), there is no gold-standard procedure for screening for depression in cardiovascular patients. Screening for depression varies greatly across specialties and practices, often leaving a gap for detection and treatment of depression in cardiac patients. There are many depression screening tools available; however, the AHA recommends use of the patient health questionnaire (PHQ) screening tool. The PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 questionnaires are the most brief, sensitive, and specific depression screening tool for patients with …

The Effect Of Organizational Culture On The Retention Of Millennial Employees, Charlene Bolton

Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative research method study of the organizational culture preferred by physician assistant graduate students was designed to explore how organizational culture can affect the retention of Millennial employees. Millennials will make up approximately 50% of the global workforce by 2020, so it is important to understand how organizational culture can influence Millennials’ willingness to stay with an organization. The problem addressed involved the inability of organizations to retain Millennials beyond their 2 years of being hired, which occurs because the values of the organizations do not align with the work values of Millennials.

After extensive literature review on the …

Deconstructing The Corporate Psychopath: An Examination Of Deceptive Behavior, Corey A. Shank Jan 2018

Deconstructing The Corporate Psychopath: An Examination Of Deceptive Behavior, Corey A. Shank

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether business students deceive others more often than non-business students. A cheap talk experiment and an ethics questionnaire are employed to examine the subject’s behavior. Fundamental differences, such as psychopathic personality, are used to examine their role in deceptive and unethical behavior. The results show that business students deceive others for personal gain more often than non-business students when there is the most to gain; however, business students find deception committed by others as unethical. Business students exhibit more psychopathic tendencies compared to non-business students, including being more likely to fit the prototypical psychopath profile. This fundamental …

Implications Of The Second World War Us Refugee Resettlement Efforts Of Cecilia Razovsky And Varian Fry, Stacey Shaw Jan 2018

Implications Of The Second World War Us Refugee Resettlement Efforts Of Cecilia Razovsky And Varian Fry, Stacey Shaw

Faculty Publications

Despite anti-immigrant sentiment and severe restrictions on immigration to the us during the Second World War, many individuals and organisations fought to change attitudes and utilise the limited possibilities available. Cecilia Razovsky worked throughout this era to utilise quotas, increase awareness, and avoid negative attention that could hinder immigration. Varian Fry provided practical and legal assistance to refugees fleeing France until he was stopped by government officials. Razovsky has remained largely unknown but Varian Fry has drawn attention as an example of America’s best intentions. The Second World War is frequently invoked in contemporary discourse surrounding immigration and the stories …

Cultural Stressors, Identity Development, And Substance Use Attitudes Among Hispanic Immigrant Adolescents, Timothy J. Grigsby, Myriam Forster, Alan Meca, Byron L. Zamboanga, Seth J. Schwartz, Jennifer B. Unger Jan 2018

Cultural Stressors, Identity Development, And Substance Use Attitudes Among Hispanic Immigrant Adolescents, Timothy J. Grigsby, Myriam Forster, Alan Meca, Byron L. Zamboanga, Seth J. Schwartz, Jennifer B. Unger

Psychology Faculty Publications

The goal of this investigation was to determine whether various cultural stressors (bicultural stress, perceived discrimination, and perceived negative context of reception [PNCR]) predict positive and negative substance use attitudes, directly and indirectly through personal identity, in a sample of immigrant Hispanic adolescents. Data on cultural stressors, substance use attitudes, and covariates were collected from 302 Hispanic immigrant adolescents (152 from Miami [61% Cuban] and 150 from Los Angeles [70% Mexican]) at 3 time points. PNCR was associated with identity confusion (𝛽=.175, p=.033). Identity confusion significantly predicted higher positive attitudes toward alcohol and other drug (AOD; 𝛽 =.216, p<.001) and cigarette use (𝛽=.191, p=.015) and mediated the relationship between PNCR with unfavorable AOD attitudes (𝛽 =-.019, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.052,-0.001]) and favorable AOD attitudes (𝛽=0.038, 95% CI [0.003, 0.086]). Perceptions of a negative context of reception may hinder successful personal identity formation and impact health outcomes for immigrant youth.

Utilization Of Behavioral Health Services Among The Latino Population, Jennifer R. Mazzetti Jan 2018

Utilization Of Behavioral Health Services Among The Latino Population, Jennifer R. Mazzetti

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Limited research exists examining the effectiveness of an integrated primary care model of behavioral health service delivery among the Latino population. This descriptive pilot study addresses this gap in the literature by exploring the mechanisms that influence whether Latino integrated primary care patients who receive a Warm Hand-Off (WHO) will or will not pursue further Behavioral Health Services (BHS). Participants were recruited from Clinica Tepeyac, an integrated primary care clinic located in Denver, Colorado. Results showed that the majority of participants engaged in BHS at the suggestion of their medical provider, as opposed to initiating BHS involvement by their own …

Horses In Therapy: The Practice Of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Mandi J. Turner Jan 2018

Horses In Therapy: The Practice Of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Mandi J. Turner

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Horses are being used in psychotherapy at increasing rates despite a lack of evidence establishing efficacy of the practice (Anestis, Anestis, Zawilinski, Hopkins, & Lilienfeld, 2013; Selby & Smith-Osborne, 2013). Without common and consistent practices based on a working theory of how Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) creates change, it is unknown how varied the practice is across the United States (Anestis et al., 2013). A lack of studies establishing efficacy leaves providers to determine effectiveness based on anecdotal evidence that may be at risk for bias (Lilienfeld, Ritschel, Lynn, Cautin, & Latzman, 2014). The American Psychological Association (APA) provides recommended …

Disclosure And Nondisclosure In Clinical Supervision: Negotiation Of The Learning/Vulnerability Paradox, Vanessa Jayne Leary Jan 2018

Disclosure And Nondisclosure In Clinical Supervision: Negotiation Of The Learning/Vulnerability Paradox, Vanessa Jayne Leary

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Few studies have explored the long-term impact of nondisclosure and disclosure events on supervisee development and identity formation. This qualitative study explored the retrospective accounts of supervisee (non)disclosure experiences in clinical supervision as supervisees negotiated the learning/vulnerability paradox that accompanies disclosure. Through the use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), six early career licensed clinical psychologists who completed their predoctoral internships between 3 and 5 years ago, graduated from an APA-accredited program, and who were actively practicing in the field of psychology were interviewed. Following interview transcription, I engaged in the process of convergent and divergent analysis in order to elicit …

New Ways Of Predicting Efficacy Of Antidepressants, Kayla Ternes Jan 2018

New Ways Of Predicting Efficacy Of Antidepressants, Kayla Ternes

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a neuropsychiatric condition that is becoming increasingly prevalent in our country. According to Cai, Huang, and Hao (2015), MDD is “common and devastating” (p. 61) and has a very complex pathophysiology. Until recently, a definitive etiology had not been found, however, new evidence has suggested that Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cognitive-emotional biomarkers may be a key into the mechanism of this disorder.

My literature review of articles found in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PsychINFO within the last ten years focused on the hypotheses of the pathophysiology of MDD, cognitive-emotional biomarkers, and BDNF. The …

Supervision Quality And Its Impact On Client Outcomes: A Review Of Meta-Analytic Studies With Case Examples, Katelyn Leidy Baguez

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

This doctoral paper explores the impact of supervision quality on client outcomes. There is currently limited literature addressing the effect of supervision quality on the treatment outcomes of doctoral trainees’ clients. This doctoral paper first reviews historical and recent literature on supervision and client outcomes. It then discusses the characteristics of high quality supervision along with a relevant case example. The paper then addresses the characteristics of poor quality supervision by both noting its potential impact on client outcomes and identifying a plan of action for when a clinical psychologist or other clinical psychology professional exhibits these characteristics in his …

Purpose: The structure of pre-operative education programs used nationally for patients prior to total knee replacement (TKR) surgery has not been identified previously, thus hospitals across the United States lack a common standard for this pre-operative education to ensure best patient outcomes. The purpose of this pilot survey study was to describe the content, providers, and delivery methods currently utilized to deliver pre-operative education for total knee replacement in the United States.

Method: Data were collected using an online survey developed by the authors based on review of literature and three pre-operative programs, and was distributed through the Research Electronic …

Servant-Leadership Decision-Making Rubric: A Greenleaf-Inspired Assessment Tool For Employee-Based Issues, Henry J. Davis Jan 2018

Servant-Leadership Decision-Making Rubric: A Greenleaf-Inspired Assessment Tool For Employee-Based Issues, Henry J. Davis

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Making decisions that directly affect others is often a stressful endeavor for those in leadership positions. This tension may derive from variables such as personal relationships with employees or concerns on how one may be perceived after an action is executed in the workplace, causing the leader in question to make reactionary decisions against their better judgment (Rosanas, 2013). Compounding the scope of a leader s decision-making activity are additional conditions ranging from potential lack of experience with a particular situation to being overwhelmed with several vague options instead of a set of well thought out possibilities to choose from …

The Craft Of Christian Higher Education, Susan M. Felch Jan 2018

The Craft Of Christian Higher Education, Susan M. Felch

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Although “the integration of faith and learning” quite rightly promotes holistic Christian higher education, the language itself may suggest two separate spheres that must be combined, thus subtly reinforcing the very dualism the phrase seeks to overcome. Understanding Christian higher education as a craft, situated within a tradition that extends historically across cultures but that is also locally inflected, counterbalances the abstract notion of “integration” by re-positioning our academic work as skilled labor. “Craft” focuses our attention on tradition, apprenticeship, well-chosen materials and tools, and artifacts, creating an image that can help to transform the modern university into an inculturated, …
