Building Resilience Among Orphaned And Vulnerable Children Through The Memory Book Intervention, Barbara J. Braband, Tamara Faris, Kaye Wilson-Anderson Jan 2018

Building Resilience Among Orphaned And Vulnerable Children Through The Memory Book Intervention, Barbara J. Braband, Tamara Faris, Kaye Wilson-Anderson

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Children who are orphaned and vulnerable due to poverty, war, or disease (HIV/AIDS) may experience childhood traumatic grief. A qualitative phenomenological approach was implemented to explore and compare the lived experiences of orphaned children, adolescents, and caregivers who had used the Memory Book intervention at six children’s homes in India, Kenya, and South Africa. Study findings revealed similar themes between the countries, with primary themes of identity and relationships, and secondary themes of coping, hope, and emotion. Findings suggest the value of Memory Book resources to encourage the preservation of a child’s story and grief recovery that can be used …

The Effect Of Ostomate-To-Ostomate Support On Psychosocial Adaptation To Stoma, Marjorie C. Summers Jan 2018

The Effect Of Ostomate-To-Ostomate Support On Psychosocial Adaptation To Stoma, Marjorie C. Summers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Approximately one million people in North America are living with an ostomy, and an additional 100,000 will undergo ostomy surgery annually. Persons living with ostomies, often referred to as ostomates, require specialized care and management to sustain physical health and quality of life. Fecal diversion ostomates, when compared to the general population, are more likely to experience psychological disturbance and higher levels of depression. These ostomates have reported increased loneliness, lowered self-esteem, decreased or absent libido, irritability, suicidal ideation, poor self-image, and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia. Being an ostomate has been associated with a reduction in …

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Further Reflections On A Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, Eric Metaxas Jan 2018

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Further Reflections On A Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, Eric Metaxas

The Chautauqua Journal

I first heard the name Dietrich Bonhoeffer during the summer that I turned 25. I had just returned to faith in a serious and moving way and one day the man who led me along that journey gave me a copy of Bonhoeffer’s classic book, The Cost of Discipleship. He asked if I’d ever heard of Bonhoeffer. I told him that I hadn’t, and he told me that Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who because of his faith had stood up for the Jews and had gotten involved in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. He said that …

Saron, Andrew Olendzki, Ted Meissner, Sara W. Lazar, Catherine E. Kerr, Jolie Gorchov, Kieran C. R. Fox, Brent A. Field, Willoughby B. Britton, Julie A. Brefczynski-Lewis, David E. Meyer

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

During the past two decades, mindfulness meditation has gone from being a fringe topic of scientific investigation to being an occasional replacement for psychotherapy, tool of corporate well-being, widely implemented educational practice, and “key to building more resilient soldiers”. Yet the mindfulness movement and empirical evidence supporting it have not gone without criticism. Misinformation and poor methodology associated with past studies of mindfulness may lead public consumers to be harmed, misled, and disappointed. Addressing such concerns, the present article discusses the difficulties of defining mindfulness, delineates the proper scope of research into mindfulness practices, and explicates crucial methodological issues for …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

In response to our article, Davidson and Dahl offer commentary and advice regarding additional topics crucial to a comprehensive prescriptive agenda for future research on mindfulness and meditation. Their commentary raises further challenges and provides an important complement to our article. More consideration of these issues is especially welcome because limited space precluded us from addressing all relevant topics. While we agree with many of Davidson and Dahl’s suggestions, the present reply (a) highlights reasons why the concerns we expressed are still especially germane to mindfulness and meditation research (even though those concerns may not be entirely unique) and (b) …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

There is growing recognition that home visitation programs serving at-risk families may be an appropriate mechanism for detecting and reducing intimate partner violence (IPV). More research is needed about how home visitors assess and respond to IPV, especially in rural and underserved areas with unique social and geographic challenges. This study describes the qualitative, needs assessment phase of a larger mixed-methods evaluation of IPV assessment, referral processes, and safety planning with clients within a statewide home visitation program. Three focus groups were conducted with home visitors (n = 16) in West Virginia’s Home Visitation Program in May 2015. Home visitors …

The Legal, Colonial, And Religious Contexts Of Gay And Lesbian Mental Health In India, Tanushree Mohan Jan 2018

The Legal, Colonial, And Religious Contexts Of Gay And Lesbian Mental Health In India, Tanushree Mohan

Honors Thesis Collection

This paper aims to understand the legal, colonial and religious contexts of gay and lesbian mental health in India. In contemporary Indian society, mental health has been a rising problem in the homosexual community, with more and more queer individuals suffering from conditions such as depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation. This paper connects the problem of declining mental health in the queer community to three main factors: Indian laws affecting the queer community, British colonialism of India, and the religion of Hinduism. It tries to understand the impact that each of these factors had on the mental health status …

The Effect Of Instructor Gender On Stem Major Choice: Evidence From Wellesley College, Karen Ni Jan 2018

The Effect Of Instructor Gender On Stem Major Choice: Evidence From Wellesley College, Karen Ni

Honors Thesis Collection

Does the gender of a student’s initial STEM instructor have any causal effect on major choice? Using a panel of student-by-course data from Wellesley College, I measure the effects of female STEM instructors on female student major choice. The main threats to internal validity are non-random student selection in or out of class sections based on observable or unobservable characteristics, along with simultaneity. To mitigate these threats, I employ an instrumental variable that uses the exogenous variation induced by random patterns of faculty hires and leaves within a given department and semester. My analyses find that exposure to female STEM …

The Perceptions And Experiences On Professional Caring Dispositions In Online And Hybrid Nursing Programs Among Veteran Nursing Educators, Devorah Overbay Jan 2018

The Perceptions And Experiences On Professional Caring Dispositions In Online And Hybrid Nursing Programs Among Veteran Nursing Educators, Devorah Overbay

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Integration of technology combined with the digitization of the classroom requires significant planning and financial commitment for educational institutions. A tension of sorts has developed that places additional pressure on many academic disciplines, especially applied disciplines such as nursing to teach effectively in the new digital landscape. Educators and students alike may find that the ever advancing technology and learning objectives do not always align in the ways they did in traditional classroom instruction. For an applied discipline, the field of nursing education is faced with many significant challenges to deliver high quality and relevant training in shifting learning environments. …

Comparing Daily Drivers Of Problem Drinking Among Older And Younger Adults: An Electronic Daily Diary Study Using Smartphones, A. Kuerbis, H. Treloar Padovano, S. Shao, J. Houser, F. J. Muench, J. Morgenstern

Journal Articles

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Background: By 2030, numbers and proportions of older adults with substance-use problems are expected to increase. While risk factors for problem drinking in late life have been identified, it remains unknown whether these factors drive daily drinking among older problem drinkers. This study examined the daily drivers of drinking among problem drinkers, moderated by age, utilizing ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Method: Participants (N = 139), ages 20–73, received daily EMA online surveys completed via a smartphone prior to initiation of treatment. Multilevel modeling tested the moderating impact of age on within- and between-person relationships between drinking …

French And Spanish Teacher Experiences In Teaching Middle And High School Students In One North Carolina School District: A Mixed-Methods Study, Maguy Techer Yancey

Education Dissertations and Projects

This study examined French and Spanish teacher experiences teaching middle and high school students in one North Carolina school district. The themes derived from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Educator Questionnaire show several areas of concerns world language teachers face in the nation: large class sizes, lack of opportunities to enhance best practices and technology integration, teacher isolation, inadequate instructional material, limited resources, and limited funding.

This dissertation was designed to analyze the experiences of middle and high school teachers of French, Spanish, and Spanish for Native Speakers.

The researcher conducted a digital survey using …

Writing Strength-Based Ieps For Students With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms, Brent Elder, Carrie R. Rood, Michelle L. Damiani Jan 2018

Writing Strength-Based Ieps For Students With Disabilities In Inclusive Classrooms, Brent Elder, Carrie R. Rood, Michelle L. Damiani

College of Education Departmental Research

Throughout this practitioner-oriented paper, we provide a rationale, framework, and supporting materials to promote the development and implementation of personalized, contextualized, and holistic individualized education plans (IEPs) with a strength-based orientation. We believe that adopting strength-based IEP writing practices is vital to reconstructing students with disabilities as capable contributors to their inclusive classrooms. The use of strengths-based approaches is not necessarily new, however supporting individuals’ needs in a strength-based model has been largely overlooked in special education. Despite their growing application, inclusive pedagogical approaches are largely absent in the development of strength-based IEPs for students with disabilities. IEPs remain largely …

Exploring The Career Satisfaction Of Counselor Educators, Regina R. Moro, Rebecca Scherer Jan 2018

Exploring The Career Satisfaction Of Counselor Educators, Regina R. Moro, Rebecca Scherer

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, the authors report counselor educators’ career satisfaction through a descriptive analysis. Seventy-five counselor educators from all across the United States completed an online demographic questionnaire and four self-report instruments related to career satisfaction in general, work environment, and mentorship experiences. The results indicate that counselor educators report satisfaction with most aspects of the job, but report dissatisfaction with pay/promotion and mentorship. This is important for consideration for current and future counselor educators, due to the amount of time and cost associated with obtaining a doctoral degree. The researchers discuss and suggest future research recommendations.

Virtual Mentorship Network To Address The Rural Shortage Of Mental Health Providers, Heidi Keeler, Tara Sjuts, Kosuke Niitsu, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, Paul Force-Emery Mackie, Howard Liu

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

INTRODUCTION: The process of identifying effective responses to the challenges of placing and retaining a rural behavioral health workforce remains elusive. The Virtual Mentorship Network was developed to test the feasibility of using distance technology to connect rural students interested in mental health careers with mentors.

METHODS: In Year 1, college and high school students were virtually mentored using a near-peer approach both live and asynchronously as a cohort over 7 months. In Year 2, college students only were virtually intensely mentored live over 1 month. High school students were asynchronously provided with informational videos produced by mentors. Program benefits …

Mental Illness Among Refugees In The Middle East, Alyssa Clark, Will Hayden, Chloe Jensen Jan 2018

Mental Illness Among Refugees In The Middle East, Alyssa Clark, Will Hayden, Chloe Jensen

Ballard Brief

Refugees are particularly susceptible to mental illness because of the situations they are forced to flee and the uncertainty they face in new countries. Mental illnesses can keep refugees from living high-quality lives. Refugees, particularly in the Middle East, face many barriers to receiving treatment for mental illness. Destigmatizing mental illness and providing access to high-quality, culturally appropriate mental health care are key practices in treating mental illness among refugees.
