Research shows that there is an increase in working professionals returning to social work school but are ill-prepared to give up their jobs to attend school full-time to obtain their master’s in social work degrees. The purpose of this case study analysis was to explore the perceptions of social work graduate students and faculty members within a model known as the One-Year Residency (OYR) Program on the east coast using both focus groups and interviews, respectively. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach with a purposive sample, the study focused on discovering the graduate students’ and faculty perceptions about (a) the OYR …
Occupational Therapy: A Partner For Justice In Jesuit Higher Education, Rebecca M. Aldrich
Occupational Therapy: A Partner For Justice In Jesuit Higher Education, Rebecca M. Aldrich
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The commitment to justice spans disciplines across Jesuit higher education, including the health sciences. At least 12 Jesuit colleges and universities offer occupational therapy programs, but the profession has been somewhat overlooked as a partner for justice on those campuses. Through a case example focusing on Saint Louis University’s Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (SLU-DOSOT), this article aims to illustrate the ways in which occupational therapy can be a partner in the promotion and pursuit of justice. A brief overview of the profession’s perspective on occupational justice precedes the description of SLU-DOSOT, and selected examples illustrate the range …

Exploring The Wholeness And Learning Climates Of Graduate Students At A Religious University, Stacey Brooke Cunningham
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: Graduate school students continuously face pressure to perform and excel, especially within highly competitive allied health graduate programs. Not surprisingly, rates of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout for college/university students are concerning. Recent evidence suggests that intentionally fostered learning and wholeness climates have the potential to positively impact students’ higher education journeys. Resilience and grit are also vital components to aid in optimal personal and academic outcomes. Goal of the Study: The current study’s goal was to discover if a stated institutional policy and philosophy about a commitment to fostering wholeness influenced the perceived wholeness and learning climates …

Examining The Role Of Summer Camps In Developing Academic And Workplace Readiness, Cait Wilson, Jim Sibthorp
Journal of Youth Development
Summer camps are an effective setting for youth to develop skills essential for academics and the workplace yet are often not recognized as such. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to investigate learning outcomes from camp most applicable to academics and workplace readiness. As a secondary aim, the researchers sought to identify the mechanisms at camp that support this learning. Youths’ primary learning outcomes include relationship skills, teamwork, how to live with peers, self-confidence, organization, responsibility, independence, perseverance, career orientation, and emotion regulation. In general, mechanisms that supported participants’ learning of outcomes included experiential learning, camp as separate …

Addie Graves (1922-2007) And The Creation Of Bethlehem Lutheran Church In Columbus, Georgia, Jesse David Chariton
Addie Graves (1922-2007) And The Creation Of Bethlehem Lutheran Church In Columbus, Georgia, Jesse David Chariton
Theses and Dissertations
Addie Graves (1922-2007) grew up in Wilcox County, Alabama, which at the time was a center of Lutheran African-American missions. After moving to Columbus, Georgia, in the early 1950s, she became the first black member of a Lutheran church in the city (Lutheran Church of the Redeemer). This is significant because most other churches in Columbus did not desegregate until decades later. It was also prior to any official desegregation action by the Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod. She could have joined a different church, but she evidently felt strongly about her Lutheran faith and identity. In 1963, she helped establish …

All NMU Master's Theses
Our global society has become increasingly interconnected. It is therefore necessary, no matter who you are or where you live, to be globally-minded and understand that now more than ever the consequences of our actions will have global implications. Although studies have been done to measure the global-mindedness of university students, and more specifically pre-service teachers, research was needed to compare the global-mindedness between freshmen and senior pre-service teachers. This quantitative study measured the global-mindedness of freshmen and senior university students at Northern Michigan University using the global-mindedness survey (GMS) designed by Hett (1993). The results showed no statistically significant …

Resource Competition Among The Uinta Basin Fremont, Elizabeth A. Hora-Cook
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Archaeologists describe the Uinta Fremont (A.D. 0 – 1300) as a mixed foraging-farming society that underwent a dramatic social change from A.D. 700 – 1000. Researchers observe through different architectural styles and subsistence activity a change from large, aggregated settlements to more dispersed and defensively oriented villages and hamlets. The Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) model provides an explanatory framework through which to interpret these changes. IFD predicts the order in which people or animals will occupy habitats based on a habitat’s relative suitability and suggests hypothetical behaviors that people or animals might engage in to improve or maintain the relative …

Financial Planning Mechanisms Available To Persons With Special Needs In Singapore, Hang Wu Tang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
A woefully underinvestigated area of the law is the management of property rights of persons with special needs. In this chapter, the term ‘special needs’ is defined widely to include people who are incapable of managing their daily financial affairs. The scope of people within this group may include persons with dementia, schizophrenia and intellectual disability as well as vulnerable elders. It should be noted that persons with special needs may have accumulated substantial property before becoming incapable of managing their financial affairs by reason of illness, old age or dementia. Alternatively, they could have inherited or stand to inherit …

The Evaluation Of Attitudes Towards Individuals With Mental Illness Among Counselors In Training, Randall Boen
Dissertations
Negative attitudes and stigma associated with mental illness have a profound impact on individuals who experience them. Researchers have defined stigma as the attribution of a deviant characteristic to members of a particular group. Persons with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) face many difficulties that impact their full participation in social life. Although attitudinal reactions to individuals with SPMI have improved considerably over the last few decades, there are still areas for improvement. Limited research has been conducted to evaluate attitudes and stigma associated with individuals with SPMI among human service professionals-in-training (HSPs). For this study HSPs were defined …

Provider Perspectives: Examining The Transition From Ei To Ecse, Katherine Ancell
Dissertations
Children with disabilities might experience multiple transitions during their early years. One important transition that occurs for many children with disabilities or developmental delays and their families is the transition from Early Intervention (EI) to Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) services at three years of age. The stress of this transition may be exacerbated for families of young children with disabilities as the shifts between services involve many choices and decisions depending on the child’s level of need. Effective transition procedures for children with disabilities sets the stage for future positive or negative transition experiences and optimal learning experiences in …

The results also demonstrate that the ability to cope and thrive under stress and adversity links not only to an individual’s personal growth …
Transcending The Essence Of Hair, Ashan Isaac Pridgon
Transcending The Essence Of Hair, Ashan Isaac Pridgon
All Theses
My work investigates the significant role and relationship that hair plays in African-American culture. Throughout history, African-Americans have used the styling of hair as a way of passing down tradition and expressing their individuality, cultural and political beliefs. Since the late 1970’s there has been a constant struggle for African-Americans to wear their hair naturally without backlash from society. In my work, I use culturally based objects such as hair combs, afro picks, head wraps and other accessories to symbolize black pride. I use this framework to generate abstracted ceramic vessels and sculptures. The content of my work becomes amplified …
