A Rural New Mexico Village's Perspectives Of Local Problems, Strengths And Solutions: Asset Mapping And Issue Prioritization For Community Development, Rita Y. Martinez

Shared Knowledge Conference

Understanding community perspectives regarding local needs, problems and assets is an important step towards community development. Needs assessments help identify gaps in public policies and/or available public services, such as public utilities, public safety, education, housing, health, and transportation, as well as asses the local/regional economy that affect the quality of life of residents. The Right To Traditional Life: The Struggle For Native Hunting And Fishing Rights, Caleb Pennington Nov 2018

The Right To Traditional Life: The Struggle For Native Hunting And Fishing Rights, Caleb Pennington

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

This research report examines the ongoing struggle for Native American groups to maintain their traditional hunting and fishing rights. Since the establishment of the United States federal government these rights have been continuously eroded through use of congressional legislation, as well as federal court rulings. These decisions have had devastating effects on the economic, social, and spiritual well being of many of these Native American groups. This piece will attempt to provide an accurate chronology of critical events, which has led to the depredation of these rights. In addition, it will provide a possible blueprint unto how the country of …

Active Shooter Events: The Guardian Plan, David R. Walker, Pauline M. Sampson Nov 2018

Active Shooter Events: The Guardian Plan, David R. Walker, Pauline M. Sampson

School Leadership Review

The decision on how to protect the children and youth while at schools is a serious conversation with varying agreements on the best practices. Some feel that school personnel should not be trained nor expected to be able to react to an armed person while others believe that training of school personnel and allowing them to be armed will deter armed assailants in schools. Ultimately, each school board and district leadership need to choose an emergency safety plan that fits their community. The number of school shootings has brought emergency safety discussions to the forefront again. One school district, highlighted …

Sanctuary Networks And Integrative Enforcement, Ming Hsu Chen Nov 2018

Sanctuary Networks And Integrative Enforcement, Ming Hsu Chen

Washington and Lee Law Review

My intended focus is on the widespread response—in cities, churches, campuses, and corporations that together comprise “sanctuary networks”1—to the Trump Administration’s Executive Order 13768 Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States2 as an instance of the changing relationship between federal, local, and private organizations in the regulation of immigration. After briefly covering the legal background of the Trump Interior E.O., the focus of the Article shifts to the institutional dynamics arising in communities. These institutional dynamics exemplify the beginnings of a reimagined immigration enforcement policy with a more integrative flavor.

Multilayered Analyses Of The Experiences Of Undocumented Latinx College Students, Yue Shi, Laura E. Jimenez-Arista, Joshua Cruz, Terrence S. Mctier Jr., Mirka Koro-Ljungberg Nov 2018

Multilayered Analyses Of The Experiences Of Undocumented Latinx College Students, Yue Shi, Laura E. Jimenez-Arista, Joshua Cruz, Terrence S. Mctier Jr., Mirka Koro-Ljungberg

The Qualitative Report

Being the target of constant discrimination and marginalization can often cause intense negative psychological reactions and shame for undocumented students. The following qualitative study describes past and current undocumented Latinx students’ experiences of educational inequality in higher education influenced by labels associated with “being undocumented.” In this study we used a constructivist theoretical perspective which enabled us to focus on undocumented participants’ perspectives, experiences, meaning-making processes, values, and beliefs. Data was collected through hour-long, semi-structured interviews with five undocumented students. Student narratives were analyzed using a multi-layered analysis approach: (1) narrative, (2) thematic, and (3) critical incident analysis. Findings for …

Data Analysis Methods For Qualitative Research: Managing The Challenges Of Coding, Interrater Reliability, And Thematic Analysis, Michael J. Belotto Phd

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of some of the principles of data analysis used in qualitative research such as coding, interrater reliability, and thematic analysis. I focused on the challenges that I experienced as a first-time qualitative researcher during the course of my dissertation, in the hope that how I addressed those difficulties will better prepare other investigators planning endeavors into this area of research. One of the first challenges I encountered was the dearth of information regarding the details of qualitative data analysis. While my text books explained the general philosophies of the interpretive …

Improving Mental Health And Substance Abuse Treatment In Juvenile Detention Facilities, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project Nov 2018

Improving Mental Health And Substance Abuse Treatment In Juvenile Detention Facilities, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

Mental health and substance abuse treatment services are an essential component of a well-functioning rehabilitative juvenile justice system. These services are especially important in juvenile detention facilities, which contain a disproportionate number of juveniles suffering from mental illness due to the association between such issues and delinquency and the relative lack of services in the community.

Counterterrorism And Human Rights: A Comparative Analysis Of United States And European Laws, And Suggestions For Turkish Law Reform, Gulen Soyaslan

SJD Dissertations

This dissertation examines whether Turkish law could be amended in order to address the concerns of counterterrorism officials without unnecessarily infringing on individual rights. It differs from other research conducted on counterterrorism law in a number of ways. First, it provides general information on the concept of terrorism and the history and evolution of terrorism in Turkey. It further compares terrorism in Turkey with Europe and the United States. Second, it compares relevant counterterrorism laws of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Turkey. Third, it shows the approaches of the European and United States highest courts to …
