Indiana State University has such a course, not required for all freshmen to complete. Class observations took …

The Antisaccade Eye-Tracking Deficit As An Endophenotype Of Schizophrenia: Results From A Hypothetically Psychosis-Prone Sample, Elizabeth A. Smith Jan 2018

The Antisaccade Eye-Tracking Deficit As An Endophenotype Of Schizophrenia: Results From A Hypothetically Psychosis-Prone Sample, Elizabeth A. Smith

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Some of the earliest studies of schizophrenia have included observations that cognitive deficits feature prominently in the disorder. Over time, models of schizophrenia development have expanded this idea to note that cognitive deficits actually emerge prior to illness onset and could confer incremental risk in addition to genetic and environmental insults. As such, these deficits may be thought of as an indicator of schizophrenia liability. This concept relates to the theoretical models informing the current study. The first is that of the endophenotype, which was first fully described by Gottesman and Gould (2003). The endophenotype is an indicator of genetic …

Educators and the general public are often discouraged by grim reports by the media regarding our nations standing with regard to Education and the policies that attempt to improve that standing. This study examined (a) the percentage of students identified as needing special Education, (b) graduation rates, and (c) dropout rates from a sample of state reported data before and after implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act (2002) to determine if the policy had an effect in these areas. Despite media assertions, no significant differences were found in these variables when comparing data from 2003–2004 and 2007–2008. It …

An Examination Of Academic Advising, Peer Mentoring, And Housing Services Provided To Freshmen Students Presented On Postsecondary Institutions' Websites: Do They Provide The Same To Transfer Students?, Kenneth L. Coleman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzed the services that postsecondary institutions provided to freshman students to determine whether similar services were provided to transfer students. Additionally, this study investigated whether significant differences occurred between institutions based on institution size, institution type, and geographical regions. Postsecondary institutions in the United States invest numerous resources designed to help ensure the success of first-time full-time freshman students. Individual state governments, as well as the federal government, incorporate the institutions retention, persistence, and graduation rates when allocating funding to the institutions. These benchmarks tend to be the definition that institutions use in defining student success. Previously, this …

Attitudes Towards Dependent Personality Disorder: The Role Of Sex And Sexual Orientation, Brandon Sentell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Relatively little research has focused on Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD) and even less research has examined sex differences, despite evidence of sex differences in prevalence of DPD and evidence that DPD is perceived as a feminine PD. Men who demonstrate DPD symptoms might be perceived as violating the male sex role and therefore risk being seen as more dysfunctional or labeled homosexual. However, there is a dearth of research regarding attitudes towards men with DPD, and no known research investigating attitudes towards gay and lesbian individuals with DPD. Undergraduates ( n = 318) read one of four versions of a …

The Impact Of Human Trafficking In Asean: Singapore As A Case-Study, Jaya Anil Kumar

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Southeast Asia remains a notorious hotbed for human trafficking. The seriousness of the problem has led to the emergence of various initiatives to combat human trafficking. This paper seeks to address why human trafficking in Southeast Asia remains a contentious issue despite the various initiatives put in place for its eradication. ASEAN Member States, including Singapore, can only resolve the current inertia when it comes to combatting trafficking-in-persons (TIP) by adopting a multidimensional, and multistakeholder approach to the problem. Within Singapore, it is recommended that the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act should be amended such that it provides greater protection …

Using Nvivo™ For Literature Reviews: The Eight Step Pedagogy (N7+1), Maureen M. O'Neill, Sarah R. Booth, Janeen Therese Lamb

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

While a literature review is a necessary milestone to be completed by all researchers in a timely and efficient manner, it is often one of the most difficult aspects of the research journey. Moreover, traditional approaches often leave novice researchers, to struggle with the conceptualisation of their literature review, now complicated by the overwhelming quantity of research available online. This paper presents a rationale the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) programs for literature reviews. QDAS tools allow the researcher to explore large amounts of textual documents to see patterns. These programs are often overlooked by novice researchers due …

Increased Risk For Obesity And Diabetes With Neurodegeneration In Developing Countries, I. J. Martins Jan 2018

Increased Risk For Obesity And Diabetes With Neurodegeneration In Developing Countries, I. J. Martins

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The incidence of global obesity and Type 2 diabetes has increased and is predicted to rise to 30% of the global population. Diet and lifestyle factors are incapable to resolve the increased incidence for obesity and diabetes in various populations of the world. Developing countries have come to the forefront because of the higher diabetic epidemic. The urbanization may possibly provide an explanation for the global diabetic epidemic. In Western countries the metabolic syndrome and non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have reached 30 % of the population and now at present NAFLD afflicts 20% of developing populations. Western diets …

This qualitative study explored the experiences of Australian physiotherapists promoting non-treatment physical activity to patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Ten Australian physiotherapists treating patients with musculoskeletal conditions in private practice and outpatient settings were recruited using a social media campaign and snowballing. Public opinion is often reported as punitive towards sentencing young people. Attitudes remain important to investigate given their potential to influence policy within the criminal justice system. Therefore, it is important to understand the formation of these attitudes and their consistency with sentencing principles. Semi-structured interviews (n = 72) and surveys (n = 502) were used to gauge opinions of sentencing young people under different scenario manipulations (age, weapon, drug treatment, prior record). The findings revealed the public expected punishment, but favoured rehabilitation with an opportunity to repent, suggesting the public are open to alternatives to ‘tough on …

An Overview Of Psychology And Law And Forensic Psychology In Australia, Alfred Allan, Anthony D. Cole, Donald M. Thomson, Cate L. Parry

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Psychology’s roots in Australia go back to 1881, but the first documented evidence of psychology-and-law (psycholegal) research and psychologists working in court and correctional settings only emerged in 1949. The activities of psycholegal researchers and psychologists providing services to the correction, investigative and justice systems are not well-documented. Our aim in this paper is to start recording the histories of these people and the development of the psycholegal and forensic psychology fields. We do this primarily by examining publications and conference papers and recording our and other people’s personal recollections. We specifically record psychologists’ interaction with lawyers, their concerns about …
