Diagnostic Procedures In Pediatric Dermatology, Arini Astasari Widodo, Githa Rahmayunita, Triana Agustin, Rinadewi Astriningrum
Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia
Diagnostic procedures in pediatric dermatology are different and significantly more challenging than those in adult patients, especially on how to approach the patients. We need to acknowledge that pediatric patients have unique anatomical, physiological, and psychological aspects. Compared to adults, children have smaller procedure area, are less cooperative, and more difficult to understand. For these reasons, we should perform diagnostic procedures on children cautiously. Having extensive knowledge in this field can facilitate us to carry out an ethical, efficient, targeted procedure with less risk. This article reviewed the most appropriate, most comfortable, and least invasive diagnostic procedures for children. Some …

A Case Of Inconspicuous Recurrent Herpes Labialis Mimicking Unilateral Angular Cheilitis, Masita Mandasari, Ambar Kusuma Astuti, Febrina Rahmayanti
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) is a common manifestation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation in immunocompetent individuals, whereas angular cheilitis is an inflammatory lesion occurring on one or both lip commissures and is induced by local and/or systemic conditions. We describe a case of RHL eruption on the corner of the mouth, easily mistaken as angular cheilitis. Case Report: A 21-year-old male presented to our dental hospital with a 3 day history of a painful, unilateral lesion on the left corner of his mouth. The lesion featured an erythematous base with a yellowish crust that extended outward. We diagnosed the …

Analyzing Anger References In The Scriptures: Connections To Therapy In A Religious Context, Emily Swensen Darowski, Kristin L. Hansen, Aaron P. Jackson, Charles D. Flint, John Linford
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
People navigate life more successfully and find more joy when they are able to regulate emotion in healthy ways. Teaching and helping clients regulate emotion in healthy ways is an important part of many psychotherapy approaches. In this paper, we focus on the emotion of anger from a theistic therapy perspective, arguing that understanding the nature of God’s anger and human anger in the scriptures can inform theistic therapy practice. To establish this understanding, we analyzed cases of the word anger in the scriptures through content analysis (e.g., quantitative) and hermeneutic analysis (e.g., qualitative). Findings revealed that, while God was …
Between Identity And Truth: A Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion, Mauro Properzi
Between Identity And Truth: A Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion, Mauro Properzi
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Emotions are receiving a lot of attention in both academic and popular circles. In fact, our culture is increasingly characterized by emotionality in thought, expression, and personal interaction, with some positive but also many negative consequences. How should Christians respond to these developments in the secular culture? A Christ-centered approach to the emotions is the general theological foundation on which we need to ground our reflections and decisions about their nature and significance. Specifi- cally, by deepening our understanding of Jesus’s teachings on His identity, telos, life-giving reality, and sanctifying power, as aptly described in John 14:6, we may experience …
Optimal Deterrence And The Preference Gap, Brook Gotberg
Optimal Deterrence And The Preference Gap, Brook Gotberg
BYU Law Review
It is generally understood that the way to discourage particular behavior in individuals is to punish that behavior, on the theory that rational individuals seek to avoid punishment. Laws aimed at deterring behavior operate on the assumption that increasing the likelihood of punishment, the severity of punishment, or both, will decrease the behavior. The success of these laws is evaluated by how much the targeted behavior decreases. The law of preferential transfers—which punishes creditors who have been paid prior to a bankruptcy filing at the expense of other, unpaid creditors—has been defended on the grounds that it deters a race …
Does Enforcement Reduce Voluntary Tax Compliance?, Leandra Lederman
Does Enforcement Reduce Voluntary Tax Compliance?, Leandra Lederman
BYU Law Review
Governments generally use enforcement methods, such as audits and the imposition of penalties, to deter noncompliance with tax laws. Although this approach is consistent with most economic modeling of tax compliance, some scholars caution that enforcement may backfire, “crowding out” taxpayers’ intrinsic motivations to pay taxes to such an extent that they reduce their tax payments. This Article analyzes the existing evidence to determine if this occurs. In fact, field studies suggest that enforcement tools, such as audits, are very effective deterrents. A few recent studies have found that audits have a negative effect on the subsequent tax payments of …

Can Semiotics Be Used To Drive Paradigm Changes In Medical Education?, John Tredinnick-Rowe
Can Semiotics Be Used To Drive Paradigm Changes In Medical Education?, John Tredinnick-Rowe
Peninsula Medical School
This essay sets out to explain how educational semiotics as a discipline can be used to reform medical education and assessment. This is in response to an ongoing paradigm shift in medical education and assessment that seeks to integrate more qualitative, ethical and professional aspects of medicine into curricula, and develop ways to assess them. This paper suggests that a method to drive this paradigm change might be found in the Peircean idea of suprasubjectivity. This semiotic concept is rooted in the scholastic philosophy of John of St Thomas, but has been reintroduced to modern semiotics through the works of …

Magnitude Of Corruption, Rationalization, And Internal Control Quality: An Experimental Study On Subsequent Offense, Ertambang Nahartyo, Haryono Haryono
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
This research examines the extent to which the rationalization tactics model reflects the relation between magnitude of corruption and attitudes toward corruption. The rationalization model predicts that individuals will justify their corrupt acts and that rationalizations will affect subsequent offense depending upon the levels of internal control quality. Using a 2 X 2 between-subjects experiment with 170 public servants as participants, this research finds that individuals are more prone to accept and rationalize their corrupt acts in the gratuities context than in the bribery context. Further, this research finds that rationalizations lead to subsequent offense. However, this study cannot find …

Women Rights Fulfillment As The Victim Of Gross Human Rights Violation: Urgency For The Sexual Violence Eradication Bill, Ani Purwanti, Rian Adhivira Prabowo
Indonesia Law Review
Heretofore in Indonesia, cases of gross violation of human rights have faced an indefinite stagnation of justice. Although the Indonesian government has ratified international human rights conventions and enacted its own system of human rights law, such laws have proven unable to fulfill the restoration of justice toward these victims in two particular aspects: convictions against the perpetrators and reparations for the victims. This article focuses on fulfilling the rights of women victims of past gross human rights violations. It will be based on normative legal research by which the existing laws are critically analyzed in order to expose the …

Turbulent National Identity In Laos: The Hmong Ethnic Group As A Case Study, Dewi Hermawati Resminingayu
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Since the independence, Laos has changed its national identity based on different principles namely Buddhism, Socialism and Consolidation between Buddhism and Socialism. These changes have given dynamic impacts to the identity of the people not only from their political life but also from socio-cultural life. This paper will specifically discuss the impacts undergone by the Hmong as one of the ethnic minorities that are often excluded from the discussion of ethnic groups in Laos. The discussion uses three approaches of ethnicity, namely Primordialism, Instrumentalism, and Constructivism in order to explain the dynamic identity of the Hmong. This paper argues that …

The Advantage Of Being Less Protected: Children’S Spatial Orientation In The City Of Jakarta, Clara R. P. Ajisuksmo, Agustina H. Baskara, Eva Neidhardt
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Path integration as a central process in spatial orientation is a basic cognitive competence used to update spatial positioning while walking. Children develop this competence via self-directed path-finding experiences. This study examines the spatial orientation competences of pre-school children in inner-city Jakarta. The influence of parental protectiveness on path integration competence was investigated, and the children’s spatial ability was measured using paper-and-pencil tests. Thirty pre-school children from poor families in three different sub-districts of inner-city Jakarta (Jatinegara Cipinang, Besar Selatan, and Bukit Duri) were tested. Results showed that children who were used to roaming more freely performed better in spatial …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Being elderly is a stage of life characterized by physiological, psychological and social maturity, and degradation. Initial observation has revealed that the elderly rarely interact with other elderly people in communal rooms and activities. Furthermore, they tend to enjoy activities related to music the most. The presence of a stimulus based on hobbies in a communal room through a music game was expected to revitalize spatial function and increase the elderly’s life quality. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of a music game and identify the elements thereof, which can influence the elderly’s social interaction in …

Social Capital And Health: Empirical Evidence From Indonesia, Cynthia Rosalin
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Through the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS4 and IFLS5), this paper examined effects of individuals’ social capital on various health outcomes, analyzing specifically whether generalized trust, bridging social capital (trust in many ethnic groups, trust in many religious beliefs), and social isolation had effects on various health outcomes. Estimated results for fixed-effects models did not show significance in any health outcome variables, except for social isolation, which had a positive effect on self-perceived health. Moreover, estimated results for random-effect probit models showed that generalized trust had weak negative effect on self-perceived health, while trust in many ethnic groups had negative …

Palestinian Solidarity Action: The Dynamics Of Politicized And Religious Identity Patterns Among Student Activists, Muhammad Abdan Shadiqi, Hamdi Muluk, Mirra Noor Milla
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This study attempted to explain the factors that lead Muslim student activists to participate in Palestinian solidarity actions by testing the Social Identity Model Collective Action model (SIMCA, van Zomeren, Postmes, & Spears, 2008). A survey of 303 student members/administrators of Islamic organizations was conducted. The sample was obtained from more than seven Islamic-based student organizations. Collective solidarity actions were comprised of peaceful actions such as demonstrations, protests, and petition signings. The model involved two identities (politicized and religious) and two mediators (group efficacy and group-based anger). Results of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis suggest that politicized identity, as …

English Language Learners And Special Education, Adam Sempek
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Language acquisition is not a cut and dried process, nor is the evaluation of English Language Learners. There are many factors that go into, and must be understood and considered by educators when it comes to working with English Language Learners and deciding if evaluation is appropriate, and if so, which evaluations and evaluation methods are appropriate to gather the most valid, representative data on the student. Being open-minded, understanding, and empathetic towards not just the process of language acquisition, but the individual student’s journey is a laudable beginning.

Building Visible Allies For Safe And Supportive Environments: Systemic Implementation Of The Out For Safe Schools Campaign, James Marshall, Rachel Miller
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Contemporary data illustrate a greater risk in school environments for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, or queer (LGBTQ). Verbal or physical harassment, and feeling generally unsafe in school, can lead to higher absence rates and lower levels of academic performance for these youth, when compared to their heterosexual peers. School districts across the country are responding to this challenge. This article profiles an implementation of the OUT for Safe Schools Campaign which is designed to provide visible adult allies for LGBTQ students throughout a school district. It highlights the systemic nature of both the OUT for Sale …

Examining Culturally Responsive Understandings Within An Undergraduate Teacher Education Program, Kelly M. Gomez Johnson, Anne E. Karabon, Derrick A. Nero
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This article examines how a group of elementary and secondary preservice teachers engaged in understanding “culture” and culturally responsive teaching while enrolled in an early program course. We analyze how culturally-related experiences, emotions, and perspectives contribute to the overall understanding of cultural competency training in teacher education. Preservice teachers varied in their use of individual- and structural-orientations, in isolation and in combination, as they developed and progressed as socially just teachers. These findings reveal that despite attempts to develop and shift toward asset-based perspectives, far more culturally embedded coursework and practicum experiences are necessary. This paper includes a reflection on …
