Dissertations

Dual credit courses are college-level courses offered to high school students which are accepted for both high school and college credit (Hughes, 2016). Dual credit positively impacts students by reducing the time to complete a degree, enhancing the high school curriculum, increasing college accessibility, and lessening educational financial burdens (Hughes, 2016). The intention of this study was to survey adjunct instructors who have taught in both high school and college environments to determine their opinions of differences that exist between secondary and postsecondary dual credit experiences. College administrators were also interviewed to obtain insight into any variability of dual credit …

Leader Responses To Ambivalence During Ipe Organizational Transformation: A Phenomenological Study, Pam Youngs-Maher

Education Doctoral

Executive leaders of higher education institutions that confer healthcare degrees are engaging in organizational transformations to meet the evolving needs of tomorrow’s healthcare professionals. Organizational transformations can trigger ambivalence at individual and collective levels. Researchers purport that ambivalence, a push/pull reaction, may play a functional role during decision making in the face of change. The purpose of this research was to examine what practices leaders, who felt ambivalent during organizational transformation, used to successfully lead change. Interprofessional education (IPE), where academic leaders are transforming healthcare education from silos to collaborative systems, was used as the context for study because of …

Understanding Faculty Laggards' Adoption Of Administrative Technologies: A Phenomenological Study, Robert B. Simon Aug 2018

Understanding Faculty Laggards' Adoption Of Administrative Technologies: A Phenomenological Study, Robert B. Simon

All Dissertations

Despite a lack of empirical research on the effectiveness of administrative technologies in higher education (Anderson, Banker, & Ravindran, 2003; Selwyn, 2011), universities have pursued these technologies, or enterprise solutions, at an aggressive pace. Spending more than six billion dollars per year on enterprise solutions, higher education sees as many as half of the innovations result in failure (Liang, Saraf, Hu, and Xue, 2007). Recognizing that technologies represent a change process in the organization (Stam & Stanton, 2010), my study explores the experiences of faculty laggards with administrative technologies, particularly during the innovation diffusion process. Higher education managers can benefit …

Researching The Mechanisms Of Gossip In Organizations: From Fly On The Wall To Fly In The Soup, Dominique J. Darmon Jul 2018

Researching The Mechanisms Of Gossip In Organizations: From Fly On The Wall To Fly In The Soup, Dominique J. Darmon

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, I explored how to research a sensitive topic such as gossip in organizations and used a narrative approach to illustrate the methodological and ethical issues that come up when considering a variety of research methods. I first attempted to conduct an ethnographic research on a project group from a Dutch university undergoing a major change. At the very beginning of the project, as a participant observer, I struggled to remain an outsider, or a “fly on the wall.” But as issues of power came into play and access became increasingly problematic, I moved towards the role of …

The Impact Of Perceived Leadership Styles On Hotel Employee Job Engagement, Abutaleb Zarban Jul 2018

The Impact Of Perceived Leadership Styles On Hotel Employee Job Engagement, Abutaleb Zarban

The purposes of this study are twofold: to identify the leadership styles and drivers that lead to engaged employees, and to contribute to the literature of employee engagement in the context of hospitality and tourism. This study used a quantitative method, specifically survey that was distributed to …

That argument focuses on results …

Leadership From The Middle Pays It Forward: An Academic Administrator Of Color’S Career Development Narrative In Postsecondary Education, Cecil Dean Campbell Jul 2018

Leadership From The Middle Pays It Forward: An Academic Administrator Of Color’S Career Development Narrative In Postsecondary Education, Cecil Dean Campbell

The Qualitative Report

The ongoing underrepresentation of administrators of color in higher education suggests that traditional career pathways make racial equities in administrative leadership elusive. This personal narrative explores middle-manager educational and career experiences—some often-overlooked aspects of higher education administration. Using leadership and career development theories, I draw on qualitative approaches to examine my own career journey as one academic affairs administrator of color who has experienced a history of career change, lay-off, and non-traditional moves within and across diverse institutions. Through an inductive approach for analyzing data in my career narrative, emergent themes incorporate data references “calling,” citizenship, and cultural change in …

What’S Broken? Not The Mold, Susan Vroman Jul 2018

What’S Broken? Not The Mold, Susan Vroman

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Changing workforce demographics indicate that flexible work arrangements (FWA) are appreciated and valued by employees, yet employers still resist their support. While not explicit in their rationale, managerial mindsets may hold that deviations from historical ideal worker frameworks detract from performance potential. As this continues, mothers are especially stigmatized for using FWA as it differs from traditional, male hegemonic behaviors. Overlaying the case of a rising executive with a study of historical management theory, it may take until Generation Y is fully entrenched in leadership for a différance to break the mold in FWA acceptance.

Through needs assessment, formative evaluation, and outcome evaluation phases, the dissertation explores questions related to what conflicts conservation practitioners face; what form a relevant, accessible, and effective conflict sensitivity framework might take; and what effect such a framework might have on the knowledge, attitudes, capacities, and actions of conservation practitioners. The findings indicate that conservation practitioners face a variety of conflicts …
