Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Precocious puberty, measured by thelarche or menarche, is a well-established breast cancer risk factor. Using a unique and patented tissue engineering system we established cell lines from 48 primary cultures of normal breast tissue from reduction mammoplasties and used them as an in vitro model of thelarche, quantifying episphere formation and ductal differentiation. Differential ductal formation was observed based on ancestry. In light of African American (AA) precocious thelarche both in vivo and as we observed in vitro, we hypothesized that AA women would exhibit an increased proportion of breast stem cells, with greater potency for differentiation. Five AA cell …

Background:
The increasing complexity of pediatric inpatients requires that all providers understand a comprehensive child’s medical and social needs. A survey administered to Children’s Mercy Hospital inpatient providers identified gaps in knowledge regarding the daily plan of care and discharge planning needs among Complex Chronic Care (CCC) patients. Multidisciplinary rounds (MDRs) create a shared decision model among all team members to ensure that all aspects of care for CCC patients are addressed.
Objectives:
To improve provider knowledge of the plan of care and discharge planning needs for CCC patients admitted to the Hospitalist service, from 40% to 75% of providers …

Recognition of food insecurity among college students in the U.S. is growing. With college costs outpacing inflation for many years now, to what extent do students at "affordable" public-supported state universities experience difficulty affording food throughout the academic year? This article highlights the level of food insecurity among students enrolled in on-campus courses at Fort Hays State University. A two-wave, self-administered mail survey found that 34% of on-campus students experienced food insecurity in the previous year, and those who were food insecure were much more likely to use local food supports, including a campus food pantry. Current combined household income …

A Lesson In Learning: Improving Learning Outcomes In India Via Pedagogical Innovation, Rhea Handa
Scripps Senior Theses
When delivered well, education is key to addressing a host of individual and societal ills, from poverty and disease to crime and poor voter engagement. India has demonstrated considerable progress in improving various aspects of its primary education system, including infrastructure and buildings, teacher-student ratios, and school enrollment. However, student learning outcomes remain consistently low across the country. A review of the literature surrounding learning outcomes has highlighted gaps in school instruction and has shown the dire need for innovations in pedagogy and curriculum to improve student learning. This paper assesses the long-term impact of one such pedagogy, called Teaching …

Finding Companionship On The Road Less Travelled: A Netnography Of The Whole Food Plant-Based Aussies Facebook Group, Robyn Chuter
Theses : Honours
Chronic conditions are now the leading contributors to the burden of disease and associated healthcare expenditure in Australia. Wholefood plant-based diets are an evidence-based approach to the prevention, management and even reversal of many types of chronic disease. However, numerous practical, cognitive, social and intrapersonal barriers inhibit the ‘mainstreaming’ of plant-based diets (PBDs). Online communities may provide the informational, emotional and social support to help members overcome these barriers. However, there is a paucity of research on both the support needs of people attempting to follow PBDs in Australia, and the role that online community membership plays in providing this …

Food Insecurity In Urban Slums: Evidence From Ibadan Metropolis, Southwest Nigeria, Oluwakemi A. Obayelu
Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies
Food insecurity is a major challenge among the urban poor who reside mainly in slums. The prevalence and determinants of food insecurity among households living in urban slums of Ibadan, Nigeria were therefore assessed. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ordered probit model. Food insecurity was found to be prevalent among the slum residents, with about 81% being food insecure. Nine out of every 10 (89.1%) households were male-headed. The largest proportion of the mildly food insecure (37%) household heads were less than 30 years old, while the largest proportion of moderately food insecure (45%) and severely food insecure …
"Hear Us, See Us!": How Mothers Of Color Transform Family And Community Relationships Through Grassroots Collective Action, Jennifer Elena Cossyleon
"Hear Us, See Us!": How Mothers Of Color Transform Family And Community Relationships Through Grassroots Collective Action, Jennifer Elena Cossyleon
Dissertations
This dissertation illuminates the local grassroots collective action of women of color and the transformative effects their community organizing efforts have on community and family relationships. Prior research highlights the reciprocal relationship between identity formation and collective action (Moore 2008; Gravante and Poma 2016; Polletta 2001; Whittier 2013; White 1999). Analysts have studied how the intersecting identities of participants motivate and contour collective action (Crenshaw 1991; Law 2012; Moraga and Anzaldúa 1981, 2015) and how collective action processes influence participants’ gendered lives and biographies (McAdam 1999; Perry 2013; Warren, Mapp and Kuttner 2015). Less understood however, are how participation in …

The Impact Of Sociodemographic Factors On Health-Related, Neuropsychological, And Psychosocial Functioning In Youth With Spina Bifida, Jaclyn Lennon Papadakis
Dissertations
Objective: There is a lack of research on the impact of sociodemographic factors on youth with spina bifida (SB). This is concerning given the pervasive health disparities that exist in pediatric chronic illness groups. The aims of this study were to examine: (1) differences in health-related, neuropsychological, and psychosocial functioning among youth with SB based on sociodemographic risk; (2) cumulative risk as a predictor of youth outcomes, as moderated by age; (3) SB-related family stress as a mediator of the associations between sociodemographic/cumulative risk and youth outcomes, longitudinally. Methods: Participants (M age = 11.43, 53.6% female) were recruited as part …
Health Is Wealth: Behavioral Economic "Nudges" Applied To Health Care, Cameron Watts
Health Is Wealth: Behavioral Economic "Nudges" Applied To Health Care, Cameron Watts
UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
“Health is wealth,” is a common catchphrase adopted by non-profits and clinics to describe the inherent value of investing in one’s physical and mental wellbeing. However, most people do not recognize the truth behind the phrase – the financial return on health investments. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 2010, that over 2.3 trillion dollars were spent to treat chronic and mental health diseases, many of which were preventable (Gerteis et al., 2016); Furthermore, the Congressional Budget Office expects 966 billion dollars to be spent on Medicare and Medicaid alone in 2018 (Projections for Major Health …

Cleft Lip And Palate: An Educational Guide For Families, Ciara Woods
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Cleft lip and palate are craniofacial anomalies affecting more than 200,000 infants in teh United States per year. Although this condition is quite common, parents are often confused and uninformed when they discover their newborn has a cleft lip and/or palate. In time, parents can learn of the surgical repairs and therapies, but what about the management, treatment, effects on education, risk factors, genetics, and any other lasting effects on the newborn? Many parents often wonder if their baby can be fed properly, if the child will have trouble learning to talk, or how to tell relatives and friends about …

The Effect Of The Konjac1 And Konjac2 Proteins On Gdp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase Activity Of Vtc1, Hafsah Jamil
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Vitamin C Defective l (VTC I) is the major pyrophosphorylase involved in guanosine diphosphomannose (GDP-mannose) biosynthesis in the plantArabidopsis thaliana and it catalyzes the conversion of mannose I-phosphate and guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to GDP-mannose and pyrophosphate (PPi). The GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMPPase) activity of VTCI is enhanced by the proteins KONJACI (KJCI) and KONJAC2 (KJC2), which are homologs ofVTCl. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the KJC proteins on the GDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (GGPPase) activity of VTCl. We hypothesized that the GGPPase activity of VTCl may also be enhanced due to interactions with KJCI and/or KJC2 due …

The Sweet Truth: Initial And Post-Ingestive Effects Of Sugar And Protein On Taste Preferences In Rats, Katrina Prantzalos
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study is to investigate the food preferences of rats when given food with either a high protein or a high sugar content. We hoped to compare initial preferences and long-term exposure to determine the role of taste, and then post-ingestive effects, to examine if taste preferences are formed on the basis of taste alone or caused by the body's absorption of nutrients. To achieve this goal, we studied rats' food choices when presented with high protein yogurt or yogurt with a high sugar content. For half the rats two dishes were placed into the home container …

Purpose Achieving successful gene therapy requires delivery of a gene vector specifically to the targeted tissue with efficient expression and a good safety profile. The objective of this work was to develop, characterize and determine if a novel gemini surfactant-based lipoplex systems, modified with a cancer-targeting peptide p18-4, could serve this role. Methods The targeting peptide p18-4 was either chemically coupled to a gemini surfactant backbone or physically co-formulated with the lipoplexes. The influence of targeting ligand and formulation strategies on essential physicochemical properties of the lipoplexes was evaluated by dynamic light scattering and small angle X-ray scattering techniques. In …
The Power Of Compassion In The Court: Healing On Both Sides Of The Bench, Jamey Hueston, Miriam Hutchins
The Power Of Compassion In The Court: Healing On Both Sides Of The Bench, Jamey Hueston, Miriam Hutchins
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
Every day in courtrooms around the globe, judges face a regular diet of difficult and emotional cases involving human misery and heart-wrenching circumstances that wear on a judge’s psyche and tolerance. Despite the nature of the cases, judges are expected to remain stoically neutral and unemotional to render fair and unbiased decisions. However, it is unreasonable to expect a human being, who happens to be a judge, to be emotionally unmoved by the plight of a young mother who turns to shoplifting and prostitution to feed her children; or the young man, raised in foster homes, with little education, guidance …
