Studies Of Amino Acid Mutations In Drug Resistance Of The Smo Protein, Eunice Wintona
Studies Of Amino Acid Mutations In Drug Resistance Of The Smo Protein, Eunice Wintona
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Smoothened receptor (SMO) is a protein that in humans, is encoded by the SMO gene. A systemic mutation in its binding pocket helps predict the sensitivity of mutant proteins to different drugs. Known as a GPCR-like receptor, it is a component of the hedgehog signaling pathway; a pathway involved in body patterning and the regulation of adult stem cells. An uncontrolled or inappropriate activation of the Hedgehog pathway drives tumor progression in cancers and a number of birth defects. To achieve these goals, the molecular modeling software MOE was used to build small molecules and drug molecules like Vismodegib and …
Oral Microbiome Networks And Their Impact On Determining Early Childhood Caries Risk, Carly Johnson
Oral Microbiome Networks And Their Impact On Determining Early Childhood Caries Risk, Carly Johnson
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The oral microbiome of humans is known to be important not only to oral health but systemic health as well (1,2). Specifically, bacterial species present have been shown to contribute to the incidence of dental caries (3,4,5). The composition of oral bacteria in children can differ based upon different environmental factors such as birth and infancy feeding type (6,7,8,9,10,11). These factors occur early in a child’s life and therefore may be contributing factors to the development of early childhood caries (ECC). ECC is the most common chronic disease in childhood (4) and has become a major public health issue in …
The Relationship Between Linear And Nonlinear Analysis On Activity Data, Katlyn J. Nimtz
The Relationship Between Linear And Nonlinear Analysis On Activity Data, Katlyn J. Nimtz
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Activity monitoring in older adults is a great way to predict disability without interfering in their daily life. We can analyze that data using linear and nonlinear analysis. While linear analysis measures the variation of activity during a specific period of time (i.e., mean, standard deviation), nonlinear analysis focuses on the evolution of activity over a period of time. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to observe the relationship between linear and nonlinear analysis of activity data obtained by activity monitoring in older adults. Eight participants wore an activity monitor around their waist for seven days. Linear analysis was …

Reprogrammed Lipid Metabolism In Bladder Cancer With Cisplatin Resistance., Min Young Lee, Austin Yeon, Muhammad Shahid, Eunho Cho, Vikram Sairam, Robert Figlin, Khae-Hwan Kim, Jayoung Kim
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Due to its tendency to recur and acquire chemoresistance quickly, bladder cancer (BC) remains to be an elusive and difficult disease. Patients with recurrent and chemoresistant BC have an extremely poor prognosis. One possible approach that may provide insightful and valuable information regarding resistance mechanisms is looking into the lipid metabolism of BC cells. Metabolism of lipids is essential for cancer cells and is associated with the regulation of a variety of key cellular processes and functions. This study conducted a comparative lipidomic profiling of two isogenic human T24 bladder cancer cell lines, one of which is clinically characterized as …

Examining Sense Of Place For Marginalized Communities In Community Gardens, Jocelyn Rodriguez
University Honors Theses
This paper critically examines community garden relationships with particular reference to marginalized communities in Portland, OR. The objective of this study is to explore how gardeners feel about their gardens, why they feel that way and to determine what that garden space does for them. I will discuss the demographics of the neighborhoods the gardens are in to identify the hardships their residents face. Through interviews, I examine relationships participants have with community gardens as spaces that are currently being held by marginalized communities with a sense of place framework.

Wisehart Cutting Horses Business And Customer Portfolio, Tawni Brook Stoneburner
Agricultural Education and Communication
The cutting horse industry has been around for many years with the first competition being held in 1898, as a way for people to prove their own horses’ ranch talents and has now grown to an industry based on trainers and clients (NCHA, 2018). The main goal of the trainer is to get a horse prepared to show at its best ability and to win the most earnings (Wisehart, E., 2017). According to the American Quarter Horse Handbook, “Judges score the horses on their ability to keep the cow from returning to the herd, cow sense, attentiveness and courage.” (AQHA …

The Evolution Of Floral Sonication, A Pollen Foraging Behavior Used By Bees (Anthophila), Sophie Cardinal, Stephen L. Buchmann, Avery L. Russell
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Evolution published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of The Society for the Study of Evolution. Over 22,000 species of biotically pollinated flowering plants, including some major agricultural crops, depend primarily on bees capable of floral sonication for pollination services. The ability to sonicate (“buzz”) flowers is widespread in bees but not ubiquitous. Despite the prevalence of this pollinator behavior and its importance to natural and agricultural systems, the evolutionary history of floral sonication in bees has not been previously studied. Here, we reconstruct the evolutionary history of floral sonication in bees by generating a time-calibrated phylogeny and reconstructing ancestral …

Probiotics are live microbial feed supplements that promote growth and health to the host by minimizing non-essential and pathogenic microorganisms in the host’s gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The campaign to minimize excessive use of antibiotics in poultry production has necessitated development of probiotics with broad application in multiple poultry species. Design of such probiotics requires understanding of the diversity or similarity in microbial profiles among avian species of economic importance. Therefore, the objective of this research was to establish and compare the microbial profiles of the GIT of Guinea fowl and chicken and to establish the microbial diversity or similarity between …

Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review:
In accordance with US dietary guidance, incorporating variety into the diet can align with energy balance, though greater food variety in some categories may make energy balance more challenging. Thus, experimental and epidemiologic evidence is summarized on the relationship between food variety, food and energy intake, and energy balance.
Recent Findings:
Lab-based, experimental research consistently demonstrates that greater variety within foods or sensory characteristics of food increases food and energy intake within an eating occasion. Epidemiologic evidence is less consistent, potentially driven by differing methodologies, particularly in defining and measuring food variety. Moreover, the effect of variety …

Agribusiness, Food Insecurity, And Chronic Diet-Related Ailments In Worcester, Ma: Toward A Nuanced Narrative, Adam Wriggins
Sustainability and Social Justice
The following research paper begins with an acknowledgement of the global food crisis and, more specifically, the agribusiness model of food production and distribution in the United States. It then zeroes in on the fundamental issues with many of the United States food movements. It then outlines a narrative with the frame that food security is a human right by elucidating concepts of food justice and food sovereignty. Once this foundation has been laid, the paper examines chronic food-related ailments (diabetes and coronary heart disease) in Worcester, Massachusetts, and how these ailments are related to racial/ethnic minorities (Black and Hispanic/Latino …

The body of 19-year-old Sinoxolo Mafevuka was found in a communal toilet in the Cape Town, South African urban township of Khayelitsha. Sinoxolo had been viciously raped, strangled to death, and her body discarded, with her head under the toilet seat and her genitals displayed openly. Tragically, while Sinoxolo’s murder is a particularly brutal example, using a neighborhood toilet in many informal settlements is an incredibly dangerous activity, and there are estimates that 10.5 million South Africans do not have ready access to toilets. “Women, children and men of all ages are frequently robbed, raped, assaulted and murdered on the …

Is It Time To Revisit Vitamin B12 For Mental Health And Cognitive Functions In Elderly?, Lina Begdache, Rani Marhaba
Health & Wellness Studies Faculty Scholarship
Decline in cognitive and motor functions and in mental health are commonly seen with aging. Although many reports attribute their etiology to aging, these conditions may have vitamin B12 deficiency as an underlying mechanism. Laboratory tests to assess vitamin B12 deficiency lack sensitivity and specificity largely due to absence of a gold standard for diagnosis. Additionally, patients with subclinical vitamin B12 deficiency have typically normal serum concentration levels and do not exhibit the classical symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. Furthermore, many comorbidities that exist with aging decrease vitamin B12 and bioavailaibility from the gut. If left untreated, vitamin B12 deficiency …
