Obesity results from a multitude of problems from depression, an imbalance in hormones, genetics, environmental factors, and can also result from a poor diet, where we are focusing our attention. A strong correlation is made with low income and obesity in children. In 2014, 14.5% of patients ages 2-4 were obese. From 2011 to 2014 17% of adolescents experienced obesity and this affects around 12.7 million people. Statistics have shown the as the age increases in adolescents, so does the prevalence of obesity.

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
With sugar consumption in the youth on the rise, many people have turned their heads towards this epidemic in response to the many side effects associated with excess sugar in the diet. Roughly 75% of all foods and beverages have some form of added sugar. It’s difficult to find a safe product for your child to eat without running into something like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Sugar-sweetened beverage intake has increased nearly 500% since 1950. This excessive sugar intake is very taxing on the body and may lead to long term impairments if not properly regulated. A study documented …

Feminist Microenterprise: Vindicating The Rights Of Women In The New Global Order?, Lucie E. White
Maine Law Review
The subject of this symposium is “Law, Feminism & the 21st Century.” What are the greatest challenges for feminism in the coming century and how can the law help to meet them? I want to begin this essay by asking that question from two radically different vantage points. The first is very far removed from the usual starting point for feminist analysis, which is the “lived” experience of women's lives. Let us move far away from a place from which we can feel the lines on women's faces, and move to a place from which we can see only numbers, …

Development of disease-resistant plant varieties achieved by engineering anti-microbial transgenes under the control of strong promoters can suffice the inhibition of pathogen growth and simultaneously ensure enhanced crop production. For evaluating the prospect of such strong promoters, we comprehensively characterized the full-length transcript promoter of Cassava Vein Mosaic Virus (CsVMV; -565 to +166) and identified CsVMV8 (-215 to +166) as the highest expressing fragment in both transient and transgenic assays. Further, we designed a new chimeric promoter ‘MUASCsV8CP’ through inter-molecular hybridization among the upstream activation sequence (UAS) of Mirabilis Mosaic Virus (MMV; -297 to -38) and CsVMV8, as the core …

Background C1q TNF related protein 3 (CTRP3) is a relatively novel hormonal factor primarily derived from adipose tissue and has anti-diabetic properties. To determine if CTRP3 could play a role in early childhood development, the purpose of this study was to establish the presence of CTRP3 in breast milk (BM) and to determine whether CTRP3 levels were correlated with pregravid obesity status of the mother. Methods Breast milk was collected from breast-feeding mothers who had a pregravid body mass index (BMI) classification of normal weight (BMI 18–25 kg/m2, n = 23) or obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2, n = 14). Immunoprecipitation …

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely related to the cardiovascular events in vascular calcification (VC). However, little has known about the characteristics of kidney injury caused by VC. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an endocrine factor, which takes part in various metabolic actions with the potential to alleviate metabolic disorder diseases. Even FGF21 has been regarded as a biomarker in CKD, the role of FGF21 in CKD remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate the FGF21 on the kidney injury in VC rats.
Methods: The male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: (1) control group, (2) …

Physical activity has been shown to have multiple benefits, such as reducing mortality rate caused by cardiovascular diseases and providing an optimal health status, making it one of the most important components of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. However, the adherence to the program is low, and finding strategies to motivate people to perform physical training is a priority. This work proposes the introduction of a socially assistive robotics system in order to provide monitoring and motivation to patients within a CR program. A study was carried out with one patient accompanied by the robot during a conventional phase II, namely …

Pulsed Infrared Radiation For Stimulation Of Vestibular System In Vivo: Evoked Eye Movements, Weitao Jiang
Open Access Dissertations
Vestibular dysfunction and balance disorders significantly impact the quality of life of patients. To assist patients with bilateral vestibulopathies and in cases where current forms of treatment are not effective, there is a need to develop neural prosthesis. In some cases, although the vestibular system could not sense the input balance signals, a significant numbers of nerve cells remain to respond to electrical stimulation(Jensen 1983). So developing a electrode based vestibular prosthesis becomes a practical solution. Vestibular prosthesis has been researched over the past decades, and vestibular function restoration is partly realized in animals such as chinchilla(Santina, Migliaccio et al. …

Hub City Farmers’ Market Revitalization Of The Spartanburg Northside Community, Caitlynn Myer
Wofford Bonner Scholar Senior Capstone Projects
The Northside Community in the early 20th century was a thriving prominent community in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Not only was Spartan Mill – the largest mill in the county, located in the Northside, but also the community became the central destination of the railroad line – thus, coining the epithet “hub city.” How did such a thriving community succumb to destruction? What is the history behind the Northside Community historically remaining a food desert for over 40 years? What changes of investment into the Northside Community have aimed to not only revitalize the community, but also to bring access to …

Exploring Identity: What We Do As Qualitative Researchers, Kerstin Roger, Tracey A. Bone, Tuula Heinonen, Karen Schwartz, Joyce Slater, Sulaye Thakrar
The Qualitative Report
Although there has been much discussion about distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research, our purpose here is not to revive those conversations, but instead to attempt to explore and articulate our identities as researchers who practice in the qualitative tradition. Using autoethnography as our methodology, we as six researchers from various social science disciplines and at various career stages engaged in focused introspection by responding individually to two questions: who am I as a qualitative researcher; and how did I come to that understanding? This reflection led to discussions of those elements and experiences that have shaped the way we …
