International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Our laboratory previously determined that while wrist-worn wearable technology devices (e.g. Garmin watches) are not valid or reliable for heart rate, bicep-worn wearable technology devices (e.g., Polar Verity Sense) were valid and reliable for heart rate during light intensity resistance training (RT). However, these devices have never been tested for validity or reliability with varied intensities during resistance training. PURPOSE: To determine the concurrent validity and reliability of identical Polar Verity Sense bicep-worn devices to assess valid measures of average and maximum heart rate (HR) during light and moderately heavy RT. METHODS: Twenty adults (n=16 male, n=4 female, age: 25.65±8.59 …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Most literature examining the influence of exercise intensity on anxiety symptoms has been aerobic training and has found high-intensity efforts to be more beneficial than low-intensity on reducing symptoms. Yet, no study has directly assessed resistance training exercise intensity on anxiety symptoms and other perceptual outcomes acutely. PURPOSE: To determine the impact of deadlift exercise intensity on rating of perceived exertion (RPE), perceived fatigue and anxiety during an acute session. METHODS: 20 recreationally active adults (n=4 females, n=16 males, age: 25.7±8.6 yrs; mass: 92.8±29.7 kg; height: 179.4±9.8 cm) completed 4 sets of 6 repetitions of the deadlift exercise at a …

Wearable technology is widely used in recreational exercise. We recently found that wrist-worn devices (e.g., Garmin Instinct) were not valid or reliable for measuring average or maximal heart rate (HR) during resistance training (RT). We postulated that lack of accuracy could be due to the intensity of RT or even positioning of the device on the wrist. PURPOSE: To determine the impact of RT intensity or wrist position on average or maximal HR validity and reliability of identical wrist-worn Garmin Instincts. METHODS: 21 recreationally active adults (n=4 females, n=17 males, age: 25.7±8.6 yrs; mass: 92.8±29.7 kg; height: 179.4±9.8 cm) completed …

The musculo-cardiopulmonary exercise test (mCPET) assesses neuromuscular performance during a standard ramp-incremental cycle ergometer exercise test using the addition of brief (5s), maximal effort isokinetic cycling power (Piso) measurements at baseline and intolerance. mCPET quantifies 4 additional variables: maximum voluntary isokinetic power (Baseline Piso); the fraction of Baseline Piso achieved at V̇O2peak (Aerobic Power Index, API); neuromuscular fatigability between baseline and intolerance Piso (Fatigue Index, FI); and the difference between peak ramp power and Piso at intolerance (Power Reserve, PR), reflecting the degree neuromuscular performance limits the exercise. PURPOSE: To determine construct validity of the mCPET using …
Time-Of-Day And Sex-Dependent Effects Of Exercise On Cardiometabolic Health In Mice With Social Jetlag, Graham R. Mcginnis
Time-Of-Day And Sex-Dependent Effects Of Exercise On Cardiometabolic Health In Mice With Social Jetlag, Graham R. Mcginnis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Physiology has adapted to function on a 24 hour time scale, referred to as the circadian rhythm. Operating outside of this time scale leads to circadian rhythm disruption, which invariably leads to pathological outcomes. Social jetlag (SJL), a common form of circadian rhythm disruption, occurs when an individual’s sleep/wake schedule differs throughout the week (i.e. – staying up late on the weekends), and has been associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease. Exercise is a potential intervention to prevent SJL-induced impairments, but the time of day at which exercise is most effective is unknown.
PURPOSE: Determine if early or late phase …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Circadian rhythms are highly conserved across tissues and play an important role in regulating how the heart responds to physiological and pathological stress. Exercise is known to be cardioprotective, yet the impact of exercise timing on molecular signaling is still being explored. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an exercise-induced cytokine which has been shown to be important to cardioprotection and metabolism. It is currently unknown how exercise timing modulates the IL-6 signaling pathway in the heart.
PURPOSE: To investigate how time-of-day and IL-6 influence exercise-induced activation of STAT3 and its downstream signaling pathways in male and female mouse hearts.
METHODS: Wild-type and …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Citrulline malate (CM) is an ergogenic aid hypothesized to improve exercise performance by promoting nitric oxide (NO) production resulting in increased vasodilation, blood flow, and oxygen and nutrient delivery to working muscles. It is also thought to increase the synthesis of ATP and aerobic efficiency via malate and the TCA cycle. Prior research demonstrates improvements in upper and lower body submaximal resistance training exercise performance in females; however, limited research exists on the effects of CM supplementation on submaximal aerobic exercise performance in females. PURPOSE: Determine the effects of acute CM supplementation on submaximal time-trial (TT) performance in females. …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Camels are vital livestock in arid regions, yet their elemental exposure remains underexplored, particularly through non-invasive biomarkers. This study is novel in applying camel hair as a non-invasive, long-term biomarker to assess nutritional adequacy and environmental exposure in a free-grazing desert herd, with age-stratified evaluation of essential and toxic element accumulation. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was conducted on a herd of 18 apparently healthy camels (≤6 months: 28%; >6 months: 72%). Initially, hair samples were collected, washed, digested, and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The samples were then analyzed to determine the concentrations of 12 …

Circulating Tumor Dna: Reducing Burden In Hpv+ Oropharyngeal Cancer Surveillance, Liza M. Joseph Pa-C
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
This review examines the rising prevalence of human papillomavirus-related (HPV+) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and evaluates the role of circulating tumor HPV DNA (ctHPVDNA) in diagnosis and post-treatment surveillance. A comprehensive literature search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, identified studies that validated ctHPVDNA as a biomarker with high sensitivity and specificity, assessed its cost-effectiveness, and explored patient and provider perceptions. Clinical evidence supports that plasma-based ctHPVDNA is the most accurate method for detecting disease recurrence and quantifying tumor burden. Patient perception studies reported high confidence in ctHPVDNA testing, while providers viewed it as …

Management Of Difficult Patient Situations, Sangeetha Larsen Mpas, Pa-C
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
The purpose of this paper is to provide strategies for clinicians to manage difficult patient interactions. A comprehensive search of PubMed was conducted, identifying articles that identified the root cause of difficult patient interactions and assessed methods for successfully navigating these situations. The term “difficult patient” reflects the interaction of patient behavior, clinician perception, and systemic constraints rather than an inherent patient flaw. Effective management involves reframing difficult behavior as an expression of unmet needs and responding with empathy, active listening, clear boundaries, and collaborative decision-making. System-level strategies reduce patient distress and clinician burnout. Ultimately, the difficult patient represents strained …

Background: Radiotherapy is an integral component of treatment for oropharyngeal cancer. Toxicity from the current state-of-the-art photon radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), has prompted the search for alternative, less toxic therapies. One such alternative that might de-intensify treatment is proton therapy. In this trial, we aimed to directly compare IMRT with intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT), both concurrent with systemic therapy, hypothesising comparable disease control and survival and lower toxicity.
Methods: This randomised, multicentre, open-label, non-inferiority, phase 3 trial was conducted in 21 sites (cancer centres or universities) in the USA. Patients (aged ≥18 years) with stage III or stage IV …

Pyruvate Kinase M2: Function, Regulation And Targeting Therapeutics In Cancer, Nada M. Ali
Pyruvate Kinase M2: Function, Regulation And Targeting Therapeutics In Cancer, Nada M. Ali
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) is a pivotal enzyme in glycolysis, catalyzing the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) into pyruvate while generating ATP through substrate-level phosphorylation. Unlike other pyruvate kinase isoforms, PKM2 exhibits unique regulatory properties that allow it to switch between active tetrameric and less-active dimeric states, influencing both energy metabolism and biosynthetic pathways. PKM2 is widely expressed in tumors, where it plays a central role in metabolic reprogramming and cancer progression. Beyond its metabolic function, recent studies have identified non-canonical roles for PKM2, including its nuclear translocation and protein kinase activity, which influence gene expression, cell cycle regulation, and tumor …

Background: In older adults, frailty is a complex condition marked by diminished functional reserves and heightened susceptibility to stressors. It is a more accurate predictor of unfavorable postoperative outcomes in the context of surgical operations than a patient's age or preexisting medical problems. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of frailty, as assessed by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and the 5-item Modified Frailty Index (MFI-5), on important clinical outcomes, including length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), hospitalization mortality, and the chance of readmission within 30 days, in older adults undergoing major abdominal surgeries. Methods: …

Post-translational modifications are a critical tool bacteria employ to survive the challenges of microbial life. Acetylation continues to gain more recognition as a modification of unique importance because the sources of acetylation – acetyl-phosphate and acetyl-coenzyme-A – are critical metabolites associated with central carbon metabolism, acetate overflow metabolism and acetate assimilation. This suggests that acetylation, indelibly coupled to metabolic flux, integrates metabolic sensing with any cellular process or pathway where an acetylation alters the function of a protein. Intuitively, this makes sense. Of course, a bacterial cell would coordinate any cellular process closely with the amount of energy available to …

Introduction: Obesity is a significant health issue in the UAE. Accurate body composition assessment is crucial for managing obesity-related health risks. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in measuring body composition among Emirati females. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 95 healthy Emirati females aged 17–27 years. Paired samples t-tests, correlation analyses, and Bland-Altman plots were used to compare the two methods (BIA vs. DXA). Results: BIA significantly underestimated % fat and fat mass (FM) while overestimating fat-free mass (FFM) compared to DXA. The mean difference in % fat was …
