Predicting The Initial Spread Of Novel Asian Origin Influenza A Viruses In The Continental Usa By Wild Waterfowl, Alan. B. Franklin, Sarah N. Bevins, Jeremy W. Ellis, Ryan S. Miller, Susan A. Shriner, J. Jeffrey Root, Daniel P. Walsh, Thomas J. Deliberto

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Using data on waterfowl band recoveries, we identified spatially explicit hotspots of concentrated waterfowl movement to predict occurrence and spatial spread of a novel influenza A virus (clade 2.3.4.4) introduced from Asia by waterfowl from an initial outbreak in North America in November 2014. In response to the outbreak, the hotspots of waterfowl movement were used to help guide sampling for clade 2.3.4.4 viruses in waterfowl as an early warning for the US poultry industry during the outbreak. After surveillance sampling of waterfowl, we tested whether there was greater detection of clade 2.3.4.4 viruses inside hotspots. We found that hotspots …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Context. Massive ultra-compact galaxies (MUGs) are common at z = 2-3, but very rare in the nearby Universe. Simulations predict that the few surviving MUGs should reside in galaxy clusters, whose large relative velocities prevent them from merging, thus maintaining their original properties (namely stellar populations, masses, sizes and dynamical state). Aims. Our goal is to obtain a complete census of the MUG population at 0.02 < z < 0.3, determining the number density, population properties and environment. Methods. We have taken advantage of the high-completeness, large-area spectroscopic GAMA survey, complementing it with deeper imaging from the KiDS and VIKING surveys. We find a set of 22 bona-fide MUGs, defined as having high stellar mass (> 8 × 1010 M™) and compact size (Re < 2 kpc). An additional set of seven lower-mass objects (6 × 1010 < Ma/M™ < 8 × 1010) are also potential candidates according to typical mass uncertainties. Results. The comoving number density of MUGs at low redshift (z < 0.3) is constrained at (1.0 ± 0.4)×10-6 Mpc-3, consistent with galaxy evolution models. However, we find a mixed distribution of old and young galaxies, with a quarter of the sample representing (old) relics. MUGs have a predominantly early or swollen disk morphology (Sérsic index 1 < n < 2.5) with high stellar surface densities (â Σea ∼1010 M™ Kpc-2). Interestingly, a large fraction feature close companions- A t least in projection-suggesting that many (but not all) reside in the central regions of groups. Halo masses show these galaxies inhabit average-mass groups. Conclusions. As MUGs are found to be almost equally distributed among environments of different masses, their relative fraction is higher in more massive overdensities, matching the expectations that some of these galaxies fell in these regions at early times. However, there must be another channel leading some of these galaxies to an abnormally low merger history because our sample shows a number of objects that do not inhabit particularly dense environments.

Why We Do Not Evolve Software? Analysis Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Roman V. Yampolskiy Nov 2018

Why We Do Not Evolve Software? Analysis Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this article, we review the state-of-the-art results in evolutionary computation and observe that we do not evolve nontrivial software from scratch and with no human intervention. A number of possible explanations are considered, but we conclude that computational complexity of the problem prevents it from being solved as currently attempted. A detailed analysis of necessary and available computational resources is provided to support our findings.

On The Qualitative Theory Of The Nonlinear Parabolic P-Laplacian Type Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Roqia Abdullah Jeli Nov 2018

On The Qualitative Theory Of The Nonlinear Parabolic P-Laplacian Type Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Roqia Abdullah Jeli

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents full classification of the evolution of the interfaces and asymptotics of the local solution near the interfaces and at infinity for the nonlinear second order parabolic p-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equation of non-Newtonian elastic filtration ut − ( |ux| p−2 ux ) x +buβ = 0, p > 1, β > 0. (1) Nonlinear partial differential equation (1) is a key model example expressing competition between nonlinear diffusion with gradient dependent diffusivity in either slow (p > 2) or fast (1 < p < 2) regime and nonlinear state dependent reaction (b > 0) or absorption (b < 0) forces. If interface is finite, it may expand, shrink, or remain stationary as a result of the competition of the diffusion and reaction terms near the interface, expressed in terms of the parameters p, β,sign b, and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In the fast diffusion regime strong domination of the diffusion causes infinite speed of propagation and interfaces are absent. In all cases with finite interfaces we prove the explicit formula for the interface and the local solution with accuracy up to constant coefficients. We prove explicit asymptotics of the local solution at infinity in all cases with infinite speed of propagation. The methods of the proof are generaliii ization of the methods developed in U.G. Abdulla & J. King, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 32, 2(2000), 235-260; U.G. Abdulla, Nonlinear Analysis, 50, 4(2002), 541-560 and based on rescaling laws for the nonlinear PDE and blow-up techniques for the identification of the asymptotics of the solution near the interfaces, construction of barriers using special comparison theorems in irregular domains with characteristic boundary curves.

Lc-Ms/Ms Based Analysis Of Vitamins B3 And B6 In Healthy And Obese Emirati Population, Ghada Rashad Mohamed

Theses

Water-soluble vitamins like Vitamin B3, B6, and B9 are of utmost importance in human health and disease, as they are involved in numerous critical metabolic reactions. Not surprisingly, deficiencies of these vitamins have been linked to various disease states. For example, Vitamin B6 deficiency has been related to many diseases in humans especially in women with type 1 diabetes and in patients with systemic inflammation, liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and those infected with HIV. Similarly, derivatives of Vitamin B9 (such as folates), are needed to synthesize, repair, and methylate DNA as well as to act as a cofactor in certain …

Pva/Chitosan/Silver Nanoparticles Electrospun Nanocomposites: Molecular Relaxations Investigated By Modern Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Mohammad K. Hassan, Ahmed Abukmail, Alaa J. Hassiba, Kenneth A. Mauritz, Ahmed A. Elzatahry

Faculty Publications

In this study, we used broadband dielectric spectroscopy to analyze polymer nanofibers of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/silver nanoparticles. We also studied the effect of incorporating silver nanoparticles in the polymeric mat, on the chain motion dynamics and their interactions with chitosan nanofibers, and we calculated the activation energies of the sub-Tg relaxation processes. Results revealed the existence of two sub-Tg relaxations, the first gets activated at very low temperature (−90 °C) and accounts for motions of the side groups within the repeating unit such as –NH2, –OH, and –CH2OH in chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol). The second …

A Spectrometer For Ultrashort Gamma-Ray Pulses With Photon Energies Greater Than 10 Mev., Kt Behm, Jm Cole, As Joglekar, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present a design for a pixelated scintillator based gamma-ray spectrometer for non-linear inverse Compton scattering experiments. By colliding a laser wakefield accelerated electron beam with a tightly focused, intense laser pulse, gamma-ray photons up to 100 MeV energies and with few femtosecond duration may be produced. To measure the energy spectrum and angular distribution, a 33 × 47 array of cesium-iodide crystals was oriented such that the 47 crystal length axis was parallel to the gamma-ray beam and the 33 crystal length axis was oriented in the vertical direction. Using an iterative deconvolution method similar to the YOGI code, …

A Laboratory Experiment On The Incipient Motion Of Boulders By High‐Energy Coastal Flows, L Bressan, M Guerrero, A Antonini, V Petruzzelli, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Studies on coastal boulders transported inland by high-energy events, such as tsunamis, focus mainly on the nature, magnitude and characteristics of past events and contribute to coastal hazard assessments. However, uncertainties on the transport models used in the literature are widely acknowledged. To study the minimum flow conditions for boulders transport, a laboratory experiment was carried out at the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory (LIDR) of the University of Bologna, Italy. The main objective was to provide experimental data on boulders incipient motion and on the relationships linking boulders weight, geometry and orientation with the flow velocity and flow depth thresholds for …

Wave-Structure Interaction In Hybrid Wave Farms, S Zheng, Y Zhang, G Iglesias Nov 2018

Wave-Structure Interaction In Hybrid Wave Farms, S Zheng, Y Zhang, G Iglesias

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Hybrid wave farms, consisting of different types of Wave Energy Converters (WECs), have rarely been investigated so far. In this work we propose a hybrid wave farm consisting of Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) and point-absorbers (PAs), and develop a semi-analytical model of the interaction between this hybrid wave farm and the incident wave field. The OWCs and PAs are modelled as truncated cylinders with and without moonpools, respectively, each with its own outer radius, inner radius, draft and mass. The hydrodynamic model solves the wave diffraction and radiation problems using linear potential flow theory and the methods of separation of …

Data-Driven Multi-Objective Optimisation Of Coal-Fired Boiler Combustion Systems, Aam Rahat, C Wang, Rm Everson, Je Fieldsend Nov 2018

Data-Driven Multi-Objective Optimisation Of Coal-Fired Boiler Combustion Systems, Aam Rahat, C Wang, Rm Everson, Je Fieldsend

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Coal remains an important energy source. Nonetheless, pollutant emissions – in particular Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) – as a result of the combustion process in a boiler, are subject to strict legislation due to their damaging effects on the environment. Optimising combustion parameters to achieve a lower NOx emission often results in combustion inefficiency measured with the proportion of unburned coal content (UBC). Consequently there is a range of solutions that trade-off efficiency for emissions. Generally, an analytical model for NOx emission or UBC is unavailable, and therefore data-driven models are used to optimise this multi-objective …

‘Cassette’-ISES (In Situ Enzymatic Screening) Identifies Complementary Chiral Scaffolds for Hydrolytic Kinetic Resolution Across a Range of Epoxides

A new ‘Cassette’-In Situ Enzymatic Screen (ISES) for combinatorial catalysis is introduced. This allows the experimentalist to obtain an information-rich readout, in real time, providing an estimate of the sense and magnitude of enantioselectivity across more than one substrate. In its first iteration, the screen identified CoIII-salen catalysts with β-pinene- and α-naphthylalanine-derived chiral scaffolds with broad, yet complementary, substrate specificities.

Destroying Tricommutativity Of A 3-Cube Using The Symmetric Functor, Edward G. Estrada Oct 2018

Destroying Tricommutativity Of A 3-Cube Using The Symmetric Functor, Edward G. Estrada

Theses and Dissertations

In the following thesis, in pursuit of a Master’s degree in Mathematics at Texas A &M International University (TAMIU), Laredo, Texas, we provide a modicum of background and introductory material to motivate the search for, and demonstrate examples of a satisfactory example of a tricommutative 3-cube whose tricommutativity can be “destroyed” through the employ of the symmetric square functor SP2. The successful identification of a counter example of such a 3-cube is done using projection maps on inverse limit systems and through the consideration of commutative diagrams of symmetric powers of spaces of weight 2ω2 . A previous counterexample of …
