Avoiding Pitfalls In The Determination Of Reliable Electrochemical Kinetics Parameters For The Cu2+ → Cu1+ Reduction Reaction In Deep Eutectic Solvents, Dai Shen, Katherine Steinberg, Rohan Akolkar Nov 2018

Avoiding Pitfalls In The Determination Of Reliable Electrochemical Kinetics Parameters For The Cu2+ → Cu1+ Reduction Reaction In Deep Eutectic Solvents, Dai Shen, Katherine Steinberg, Rohan Akolkar

Faculty Scholarship

Deep eutectic solvents (DES), on account of their low-cost, non-flammability and electrochemical stability, are attracting attention for their potential use in applications such as electrodeposition and energy storage. In these applications, knowledge of the transport and electrochemical kinetics properties of DES is critically important. To date, attempts to measure the kinetics parameters of the Cu2+ +e Cu1+ reaction in ethaline DES have yielded a cathodic charge transfer coefficient (α) in the range of 0.2–0.3 suggesting an unexpected asymmetric polarization behavior. In the present work, we pursued a comprehensive study of the kinetics and transport properties of the aforementioned reaction. Using …

Development Of A New Piezoelectric-Based Energy Harvesting Pavement System, Lukai Guo Nov 2018

Development Of A New Piezoelectric-Based Energy Harvesting Pavement System, Lukai Guo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A novel design of a piezoelectric-based energy harvesting pavement system (PZ-EHPS) is introduced in this dissertation work. The design concept of this PZ-EHPS is to transform asphalt layers into a piezoelectric energy harvester to collect dissipated vehicle kinetic energy in a large-scale system, relying on two conductive asphalt layers and one piezoelectric material layer. To verify the feasibility of the above design concept, this dissertation work practically fabricated and tested a series of PZ-EHPS specimens under the loads from a Material Testing System (MTS) in the laboratory, and theoretically analyzed one typical PZ-EHPS specimen via a three-degree-of-freedom electromechanical model and …

Control Of Uncertain Dynamical Systems With Spatial And Temporal Constraints, Ehsan Arabi Nov 2018

Control Of Uncertain Dynamical Systems With Spatial And Temporal Constraints, Ehsan Arabi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The overarching objective of this dissertation is the development of feedback control frameworks for uncertain dynamical systems that are subject to spatial and/or temporal constraints. These spatiotemporal constraints usually arise from the physical and/or performance characteristics associated with a considered dynamical system in safety-critical applications, where synthesis and analysis of feedback control laws are not trivial. Specifically, the proposed control architectures in this dissertation mainly contribute to the model reference adaptive control and finite-time control literature. In particular, unlike existing model reference adaptive control approaches that are not capable of enforcing user-defined performance guarantees without an ad-hoc tuning process, the …

Developmental Parameters Of A Southern Mountain Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Population Reveal Potential Source Of Latitudinal Differences In Generation Time, Anne E. Mcmanis, James A. Powell, Barbara J. Bentz Nov 2018

Developmental Parameters Of A Southern Mountain Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Population Reveal Potential Source Of Latitudinal Differences In Generation Time, Anne E. Mcmanis, James A. Powell, Barbara J. Bentz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae, Hopkins) is a major disturbance agent in pine ecosystems of western North America. Adaptation to local climates has resulted in primarily univoltine generation time across a thermally diverse latitudinal gradient. We hypothesized that voltinism patterns have been shaped by selection for slower developmental rates in southern populations inhabiting warmer climates. To investigate traits responsible for latitudinal differences we measured lifestage-specific development of southern mountain pine beetle eggs, larvae and pupae across a range of temperatures. Developmental rate curves were fit using maximum posterior likelihood estimation with a Bayesian prior to improve fit stability. …

Translation Theorems For The Fourier-Feynman Transform On The Product Function Space C2 A,B, [0,T], Seung Jun Chang, Jae Gil Choi, David Skoug

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this article, we establish the Cameron{Martin translation theo- rems for the analytic Fourier{Feynman transform of functionals on the product function space C2 a;b[0; T]. The function space Ca;b[0; T] is induced by the gener- alized Brownian motion process associated with continuous functions a(t) and b(t) on the time interval [0; T]. The process used here is nonstationary in time and is subject to a drift a(t). To study our translation theorem, we introduce a Fresnel-type class Fa;b A1;A2 of functionals on C2 a;b[0; T], which is a generaliza- tion of the Kallianpur and Bromley{Fresnel class FA1;A2 . We then …

Engineering Viscoelastic Behavior Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites With Nanoparticles For Controlling Deployment Of Aerospace Structures, Mark Scherbarth Nov 2018

Engineering Viscoelastic Behavior Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites With Nanoparticles For Controlling Deployment Of Aerospace Structures, Mark Scherbarth

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The United States Air Force is focused on reducing mass and power consumption of spacecraft to increase their capabilities for space missions. Low mass and power consumption can be achieved by using composites with low density and high stiffness and utilizing few satellite components. One way to achieve reduced mass is by eliminating attendant deployment mechanisms consuming valuable power and mass allocations on spacecraft with deployable structures. Secondary systems are typically used to assist deployable space structures to ensure 100% success. A passively deployed space structure would be of great value to the Department of Defense and the commercial marketplace. …

Ensemble Data Assimilation For Flood Forecasting In Operational Settings: From Noah-Mp To Wrf-Hydro And The National Water Model, Mahkameh Zarekarizi

Dissertations and Theses

The National Water Center (NWC) started using the National Water Model (NWM) in 2016. The NWM delivers state-of-the-science hydrologic forecasts in the nation. The NWM aims at operationally forecasting streamflow in more than 2,000,000 river reaches while currently river forecasts are issued for 4,000. The NWM is a specific configuration of the community WRF-Hydro Land Surface Model (LSM) which has recently been introduced to the hydrologic community. The WRF-Hydro model, itself, uses another newly-developed LSM called Noah-MP as the core hydrologic model. In WRF-Hydro, Noah-MP results (such as soil moisture and runoff) are passed to routing modules. Riverine water level …

Shared Leadership On A Career And Technical Education Campus, Samantha Ward, Casey Graham-Brown Nov 2018

Shared Leadership On A Career And Technical Education Campus, Samantha Ward, Casey Graham-Brown

School Leadership Review

Many students enter career and technical education (CTE) programs to pursue the attainment of job-specific skills. K-12 career and technical education program educators help prepare students for careers after high school by offering students a way to establish and improve upon industry-based skills (Treschan & Mehrotra, 2014). Through CTE programs, educators train students to become global competitors in the workforce by introducing them to career practices that are prominent within their fields (Conley, 2013; Gordon, 2014; Stone & Lewis, 2012).

Substance And Person In Tertullian And Augustine, Andrew P. Hillaker Nov 2018

Substance And Person In Tertullian And Augustine, Andrew P. Hillaker

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

The doctrine of the Trinity has been a focal point of Christian thinking throughout Church history. While the term “Trinity” does not appear in the biblical text, it is still a vital Christian doctrine. The doctrine, however, has not come without controversy. Various understandings of the doctrine have been presented throughout Church history. Tertullian (ca. 160-220 AD) and Augustine (354-430 AD) represent two of the foremost theologians to discuss the issue. Tertullian was one of the first to thoroughly examine the doctrine. He coined the terms “substance” and “person” in his discussion of the doctrine. These terms would come to …

Signing Exact English; A Simultaneously Spoken And Signed Communication Option In Deaf Education, Kabian Rendel, Jill Bargones, Britnee Blake, Barbara Luetke, Deborah S. Stryker

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Current reviews of the literature continue to evidence that even with current assistive listening technology, many children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HH) persist in demonstrating English language and literacy gaps compared to hearing peers (e.g., C. Mayer 2016; C. Mayer, & Trezek, 2018). For example, Geers, Tobey, Moog, and Brenner (2008) reported that “only about half” (p. 262) of children using cochlear implants (CIs) (and no sign to support their speech production) achieved age-appropriate abilities by third grade. Given the continually-reported variability of results (e.g., Harris, 2016; C. Mayer, & Trezek, 2018), an alternative is warranted. Signing Exact English …

Stem: What’S Holding Females Back?, Sue Thomson

Teacher columnist - Sue Thomson

While the 20th century saw women stride ahead in their participation in education and the workforce, there are still gender differences apparent in some areas of education. In particular, females do not enrol in higher mathematics, science, or ICT, or move into STEM-based careers to the same extent as males. We rightly celebrate great achievements for women in science, such as the Nobel Prizes awarded in Physics to Donna Strickland and in Chemistry to Frances Arnold this year, but why are these achievements such a rarity?

Application Of Click Chemistry In The Development Of Peptide Based Hiv Fusion Inhibitors, Mukesh Madan Mudgal, Nagaraju Birudukota

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a major global public health issue. Inhibition of HIV envelope fusion with the CD4 cell membrane prevents the entry of HIV into the CD4 cells providing a novel approach to the treatment of HIV infection. Thus, interference in the fusion of the virus with the co-receptor substrate appears to be a specific and potential way to fight HIV infection and replication. Applications of click chemistry are spreading in the field of drug discovery and it became a powerful tool for the synthesis of medicinally important compounds.

Remarkably, the Cu (I)-Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (CuAAC) …

On The Feasibility Of Profiling, Forecasting And Authenticating Internet Usage Based On Privacy Preserving Netflow Logs, Soheil Sarmadi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding Internet user behavior and Internet usage patterns is fundamental in developing future access networks and services that meet technical as well as Internet user needs. User behavior is routinely studied and measured, but with different methods depending on the research discipline of the investigator, and these disciplines rarely cross. We tackle this challenge by developing frameworks that the Internet usage statistics used as the main features in understanding Internet user behaviors, with the purpose of finding a complete picture of the user behavior and working towards a unified analysis methodology. In this dissertation we collected Internet usage statistics via …

The Effect Of Problem Construction On Team Process And Creativity, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Vignesh Murugavel

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although research on the benefits of problem construction within the creative process is expanding, research on team problem construction is limited. This study investigates the cognitive process of problem construction and identification at the team level through an experimental design. Furthermore, this study explores team social processes in relation to problem construction instructions. Using student teams solving a real-world problem, the results of this study revealed that teams that engaged in problem construction and identification generated more original ideas than teams that did not engage in such processes. Moreover, higher satisfaction and lower conflict was observed among groups that engaged …

Computation Of A Well-Conditioned Dynamic Stiffness Matrix For Elastic Layers Overlying A Half-Space, Andrew T. Peplow Nov 2018

Computation Of A Well-Conditioned Dynamic Stiffness Matrix For Elastic Layers Overlying A Half-Space, Andrew T. Peplow

All Works

© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. In the context of range-independent solid media, we propose a well-conditioned dynamic stiffness matrix for an elastic layer sitting over an elastic half-space. This formulation overcomes the well-known problem of numerical ill-conditioning when solving the system of equations for deep-layered strata. The methodology involves the exact solutions of transformed ordinary differential equations in the wavenumber domain, a projection method based on the transformed equations with respect to the depth coordinate. By re-arranging the transformed equations the solutions remain numerically well-conditioned for all layer depths. The inverse transforms are achieved with a numerical …

An Analytical Solution For Attainment Of Field Capacity, Ali Aldrees Nov 2018

An Analytical Solution For Attainment Of Field Capacity, Ali Aldrees

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Field Capacity (FC) is a key parameter to quantify in agricultural engineering, irrigation controlling, and soil physics studies. For instance, irrigation studies focuses on determining the optimal amount of water needed by plants to grow following an irrigation system and therefore relies on determining FC. Likewise, the value of FC is a good indicator of soil textures, structures and pore size distributions. For example, loamy soils have a wider distribution of pores leading to high FC values. FC depends on multiple physically-grounded variables which include matric potential value (ψ_FC ), water content at FC (θ_FC ), specific drainage time to …

Lump Solutions And Riemann-Hilbert Approach To Soliton Equations, Sumayah A. Batwa Nov 2018

Lump Solutions And Riemann-Hilbert Approach To Soliton Equations, Sumayah A. Batwa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first part of this dissertation we introduce two matrix iso-spectral problems, a Kaup-Newell type and a generalization of the Dirac spectral problem, associated with the three-dimensional real Lie algebras sl(2;R) and so(3;R), respectively. Through zero curvature equations, we furnish two soliton hierarchies. Hamiltonian structures for the resulting hierarchies are formulated by adopting

the trace identity. In addition, we prove that each of the soliton hierarchies has a bi-Hamiltonian structure which leads to the integrability in the Liouville sense. The motivation of the first part is to construct soliton hierarchies with infinitely many commuting symmetries and conservation laws.

Kinetic Characterization Of The Shigella Type Three Secretion System Atpase Spa47 Using Α-32p Atp, Heather B. Case, Nicholas E. Dickenson Nov 2018

Kinetic Characterization Of The Shigella Type Three Secretion System Atpase Spa47 Using Α-32p Atp, Heather B. Case, Nicholas E. Dickenson

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

ATPases represent a diverse class of enzymes that utilize ATP hydrolysis to support critical biological functions such as driving ion pumps, providing mechanical work, unfolding/folding proteins, and supporting otherwise thermodynamically unfavorable chemical reactions. We have recently shown that the Shigella protein Spa47 is an ATPase that supports protein secretion through its specialized type three secretion apparatus (T3SA), supporting infection of human host cells. Characterizing ATPases, such as Spa47, requires a means to accurately determine enzyme activity (ATP hydrolysis) as a function of time, reaction conditions, and potential cofactors, regulators, inhibitors, etc. Here, we describe a detailed protocol for characterizing …
