Interest in bees has grown dramatically in recent years in light of several studies that have reported widespread declines in bees and other pollinators. Investigating declines in wild bees can be difficult, however, due to the lack of faunal surveys that provide baseline data of bee richness and diversity. Protected lands such as national monuments and national parks can provide unique opportunities to learn about and monitor bee populations dynamics in a natural setting because the opportunity for large-scale changes to the landscape are reduced compared to unprotected lands. Here we report on a 4-year study of bees in Grand …

Identifying Structural Changes With Unsupervised Machine Learning Methods, Nicholas Walker, Ka Ming Tam, Brian Novak, M. Jarrell
Faculty Publications
Unsupervised machine learning methods are used to identify structural changes using the melting point transition in classical molecular dynamics simulations as an example application of the approach. Dimensionality reduction and clustering methods are applied to instantaneous radial distributions of atomic configurations from classical molecular dynamics simulations of metallic systems over a large temperature range. Principal component analysis is used to dramatically reduce the dimensionality of the feature space across the samples using an orthogonal linear transformation that preserves the statistical variance of the data under the condition that the new feature space is linearly independent. From there, k-means clustering is …

Delta Debugging Microservice Systems, Xiang Zhou, Xin Peng, Tao Xie, Jun Sun, Wenhai Li, Chao Ji, Dan Ding
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Debugging microservice systems involves the deployment and manipulation of microservice systems on a containerized environment and faces unique challenges due to the high complexity and dynamism of microservices. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a debugging approach for microservice systems based on the delta debugging algorithm, which is to minimize failureinducing deltas of circumstances (e.g., deployment, environmental configurations) for effective debugging. Our approach includes novel techniques for defining, deploying/manipulating, and executing deltas following the idea of delta debugging. In particular, to construct a (failing) circumstance space for delta debugging to minimize, our approach defines a set of …

Simulation And Optimization Of A Sheathless Size-Based Acoustic Particle Separator, Shivaraman Asoda
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Standing surface acoustic waves (SSAW) have been widely used for sorting of cells and particles. However, the major challenges faced with the acoustic driven separation process is the need for an optimized setup to achieve effective separation and the range of particles that can be separated. In this thesis, a custom simulation model is studied to investigate and optimize the separation of varying size particles in a sheathless acoustic separation platform that was developed in our research lab. Specifically, the effect of flowrate, pressure amplitude, wavelength and interdigitated transducers (IDTs) physical parameters on the separation efficiency is explored. We also …
Time And Tragedy In Beth Henley’S The Jacksonian, Verna A. Foster
Time And Tragedy In Beth Henley’S The Jacksonian, Verna A. Foster
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In The Jacksonian, an autobiographical play set in Mississippi in 1964, Beth Henley filters a tragic action based on the Aristotelian model through the non-linear memory of Rosy, the play’s narrator and choric figure, as she tries not to remember that her father has killed her mother. Rosy’s father, Bill—a Girardian scapegoat figure contaminated by the racist violence of the community he lives in—is the protagonist of the tragic action. But Henley focuses on its effect on Rosy. A tragic event can occur only in progressive chronological time, but by circling around the murder in her memory, Rosy creates …
Enzyme Kinetics From Circular Dichroism Of Insulin Reveals Mechanistic Insights Into The Regulation Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Valerie A. Ivancic, Claire A. Krasinski, Qiuchen Zheng, Rebecca J. Meservier, Donald E. Spratt, Noel D. Lazo
Enzyme Kinetics From Circular Dichroism Of Insulin Reveals Mechanistic Insights Into The Regulation Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Valerie A. Ivancic, Claire A. Krasinski, Qiuchen Zheng, Rebecca J. Meservier, Donald E. Spratt, Noel D. Lazo
Chemistry
Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is a zinc metalloprotease that selectively degrades biologically important substrates associated with type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD). As such, IDE is an attractive target for therapeutic innovations. Amajor requirement is an understanding of how other molecules present in cells regulate the activity of the enzyme toward insulin, IDE's most important physiologically relevant substrate. Previous kinetic studies of the IDE-dependent degradation of insulin in the presence of potential regulators have used iodinated insulin, a chemical modification that has been shown to alter the biological and biochemical properties of insulin. Here, we present a novel kinetic assay …
Experimental Study On Uplift Capacity Of Purlins Considering Restraints From Standing Seam Roof Systems, Wei Luan, Yuanqi Li
Experimental Study On Uplift Capacity Of Purlins Considering Restraints From Standing Seam Roof Systems, Wei Luan, Yuanqi Li
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
A total of 32 specimens of single-span purlin roof assemblies considering uplift wind load were tested to investigate the structural behavior of cold-formed steel purlins with one flange fastened to standing seam roofs. Failure modes and failure loads of purlins with different parameters were obtained. Full finite element models, incorporate purlins, clips and standing seam roof panels, were developed, and the analysis results were consistent to a high degree with the test results. Using the same element type and material model, the rotational restraint of test roof systems and corresponding influence factors were investigated by finite element models. Finally, using …

The Weak Reality That Makes Quantum Phenomena More Natural: Novel Insights And Experiments, Yakir Aharonov, Eliahu Cohen, Mordecai Waegell, Avshalom C. Elitzur
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
While quantum reality can be probed through measurements, the Two-State Vector Formalism (TSVF) reveals a subtler reality prevailing between measurements. Under special pre- and post-selections, odd physical values emerge. This unusual picture calls for a deeper study. Instead of the common, wave-based picture of quantum mechanics, we suggest a new, particle-based perspective: Each particle possesses a definite location throughout its evolution, while some of its physical variables (characterized by deterministic operators, some of which obey nonlocal equations of motion) are carried by “mirage particles” accounting for its unique behavior. Within the time interval between pre- and post-selection, the particle gives …

Drop In Or Drop Out: A Case Study On The Effects Of Academic Track Placement, And Levels Of Student Skill And Will, On Successful Ninth-Grade Completion, Channell M. Wilson-Segura
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The ninth grade is a transition year from middle school to high school where many students struggle to successfully navigate a new environment, new teachers and peers, new academic and behavioral expectations, and the concept of graduation requirements. This qualitative study examined the effects of academic track placement, and student levels of skill and will, on successful ninth-grade completion in one New Mexico Title I high school. It also provided insight into their perceptions of the success factors and challenges that they felt impacted their ability to successfully promote to the tenth-grade, and thus, remain on-track for graduation.

Annotation-Enabled Interpretation And Analysis Of Time-Series Data, Niveditha Venugopal
Dissertations and Theses
As we continue to produce large amounts of time-series data, the need for data analysis is growing rapidly to help gain insights from this data. These insights form the foundation of data-driven decisions in various aspects of life. Data annotations are information about the data such as comments, errors and provenance, which provide context to the underlying data and aid in meaningful data analysis in domains such as scientific research, genomics and ECG analysis. Storing such annotations in the database along with the data makes them available to help with analysis of the data. In this thesis, I propose a …

Tracking Soil Signatures Of The 16 Mile Fire, Delaware State Forest, Pa, Jennifer Callanan
Sustainability Seminar Series
The high intensity 16 Mile Fire that burned in the Delaware State Forest, PA was not typical in forests of this region. This study tracks the chemical signature in the soil as a result of the combustion of biomass and associated ash inputs. Chemical signatures related directly to the fire impacted soils were observed, with some remaining after one year’s time. These lasting signatures may influence the future structure of the forest. The results of this study begin to address implications of high intensity fire in forests of the northeast as changing climatic conditions may begin to influence their fire …

Grade Span Configuration And Academic Performance For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear Analysis, M. Chad Jones, John R. Slate, George W. Moore, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia
School Leadership Review
Grade-span configuration refers to the range of grades within a school (Coladarci & Hancock, 2002). The debate over the benefits of one grade span configuration over the other has ensued for decades (Howley, 2002). Specific questions in this debate are (a) Which grade span configuration is most cost effective?; (b) Which grade span configuration yields the best academic achievement?; and (c) Which grade span configuration best meets the social and emotional needs of middle level children? (Howley, 2002).

Differences In Dropout Rates As A Function Of High School Size For Students In Poverty: A Texas Multiyear, Statewide Study, Amy R. Ambrose, George W. Moore, John R. Slate, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia
School Leadership Review
Child poverty in the United States, with regard to student achievement, has grave challenges for the children who face poverty (Scott & Pressman, 2013). Not only is living in poverty associated with lower academic achievement, but student poverty is also associated with lower rates of school completion (Borg, Borg, & Stranahan, 2012; Cooper & Crosnoe, 2007; Kena et al., 2015). Consequentially, students who do not complete high school are more likely to (a) serve time in prison, (b) need government assistance, and/or ( c) die at an earlier age (Messacar & Oreopoulos, 2013). With the increasing number of children who …

School Leadership Review
This issue of School Leadership Review comes at a time when many states and territories are dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Unprecedented rains, catastrophic winds, and historic levels of sustained flooding have devastated many communities, as well as the schools and universities within them. These awful disasters brought the loss of lives as well as total destruction of homes, businesses, and campuses. Perhaps the historic ferocity of these storms is coincidental or, more likely, they were fueled by a warmer than ever ocean, but whatever the cause, the impacts of these storms leave immense structural …

Background Hypertension remains one of the most important, modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. Yet, the largest minority ethnic group (Hispanics/Latinos) often have different health outcomes and behavior, making hypertension management more difficult. We explored the effects of an American Heart Association-sponsored population health intervention aimed at modifying behavior of Latinos living in Texas. Methods and Results We enrolled 8071 patients, and 5714 (65.7%) completed the 90-day program (58.5 years ±11.7; 59% female) from July 2016 to June 2018. Navigators identified patients with risk factors; initial and final blood pressure ( BP ) readings were performed in the physician's office; and interim …

Background: Down syndrome (DS) individuals, by the age of 40s, are at increased risk to develop Alzheimer-like dementia, with deposition in brain of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Our laboratory recently demonstrated the disturbance of PI3K/AKT/mTOR axis in DS brain, prior and after the development of Alzheimer Disease (AD). The aberrant modulation of the mTOR signalling in DS and AD age-related cognitive decline affects crucial neuronal pathways, including insulin signaling and autophagy, involved in pathology onset and progression. Within this context, the therapeutic use of mTOR-inhibitors may prevent/attenuate the neurodegenerative phenomena. By our work we aimed to rescue mTOR signalling …

College of Science Patents
Imaging techniques that may be used in applications such as differential phase contrast imaging are disclosed that include, for example, configuring a beam source and a beam detector such that a beam connects the two, positioning an object, a phase grating and an analyzer grating in the beam path, producing multiple data sets based on various analyzer grating positions, and conducting a regression analysis using a predetermined function having a set of fitting coefficients to establish those fitting coefficients. In those techniques, the fitting coefficients may be used to characterize a set of interference properties associated with the object.
