Novel Methods Of Utilization, Elimination, And Description Of The Distortion Power In Electrical Circuits, Hussein Kamal Anwer Al-Bayaty Jan 2018

Novel Methods Of Utilization, Elimination, And Description Of The Distortion Power In Electrical Circuits, Hussein Kamal Anwer Al-Bayaty

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Firstly, this thesis investigates the electrical power harmonics in an attempt to utilize harmonic current and its distortion power in a novel idea to reconvert the distortion power into useful power. This is done, in order to feed different DC or AC loads in single and three-phase power system by using passive or active filters and accordingly, develop a new topology of hybrid active power filter (HAPF). In addition, this circuit can be considered as a power factor corrector (PFC) because it reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) and improves the power factor (PF). Secondly, this thesis works on a …

Micro-Scale Study Of Multi-Component Ionic Transport In Concrete, Ganlin Feng Jan 2018

Micro-Scale Study Of Multi-Component Ionic Transport In Concrete, Ganlin Feng

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete due to chloride ingress is one of the main causes of the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures, particularly in marine environments. It is therefore important to develop a reliable prediction model of chloride ingress into concrete, which can be used to predict the chloride concentration profiles accurately to help to assess the service life for reinforced concrete structures. Cementitious materials are porous media with a highly complex and active chemical composition. Ionic transport in cementitious materials is a complicated process involving mechanisms such as diffusion, migration, ionic binding, adsorption and electrochemical interactions taking place …

Inclusive Study Of Bottomonium Production In Association With An Η Meson In E+E− Annihilations Near Υ(5s), U. Tamponi Et Al., Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty Articles

We study bottomonium production in association with an η meson in e+e− annihilations near the Υ(5S), at a center of mass energy of s√=10.866GeV. The results are based on the 121.4fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle experiment at the asymmetric energy KEKB collider. Only the η meson is reconstructed and the missing-mass spectrum of η candidates is investigated. We observe the e+e−→ηΥJ(1D) process and find evidence for the e+e−→ηΥ(2S) process, while no significant signals of Υ(1S), hb(1P), nor hb(2P) are found. Cross sections for the studied processes are reported.

Angular Analysis Of The E + E − → Dðþd∓ Process Near The Open Charm Threshold Using Initial-State Radiation, V. Zhukova Et Al., Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty Articles

We report a new measurement of the exclusive e+e−→D(*)±D*∓ cross sections as a function of the center-of-mass energy from the D(*)±D*∓ threshold through √s=6.0  GeV, using the initial-state radiation technique. The analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of 951  fb−1. The accuracy of the cross section measurement is increased by a factor of 2 over the first Belle study. We perform the first angular analysis of the e+e−→D*±D*∓process and decompose this exclusive cross section into three components corresponding to the D∗helicities.

The Next Reapportionment Revolution, Ashira Pelman Ostrow Jan 2018

The Next Reapportionment Revolution, Ashira Pelman Ostrow

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In the 1960’s, the Supreme Court famously imposed the one person, one vote requirement on federal, state and local legislatures. The doctrine triggered a reapportionment revolution that rapidly resolved the problem of malapportioned districts. Within just a few years, legislatures across the nation were reapportioned to equalize the population between districts. Sadly, however, the national commitment to equal-population districts has led directly to the current crisis of political gerrymandering. The boundaries of equal-population districts must be redrawn every ten years to maintain population equality. Even with rigid adherence to population requirements, district boundaries are easily manipulated to secure incumbent seats …

The Implications Of Participatory Budgeting In Illinois K-12 School Districts, Jeremy Larson Jan 2018

The Implications Of Participatory Budgeting In Illinois K-12 School Districts, Jeremy Larson

All Capstone Projects

Financial management skills are a necessity for every leader in the work environment. It helps them to make the best choices with the capital resources that are available. Non-profit organizations face the scarcity challenge, and it may be difficult to strike a balance when implementing the budgets. Acquiring financial management skills helps the leaders to carry out a cost-benefit analysis that allows them to determine the departments that need more resources, and as a result, they end up creating development even when faced with financial difficulties. Collaboration is a necessity and an essential aspect of the K-12 budgeting process because …

Connecting Chemistry To Community With Deliberative Democracy, Regis Komperda, Jack Barbera, Erin Shortlidge, Gwen Shusterman, Stem Education And Equity Institute, Portland State University

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Science education communities have called for rethinking curricula to improve student understanding of the nature of science and the role of science in addressing controversial modern issues such as climate change, energy policy, and pollution levels. One approach to meeting this call is integrating these topics into class activities that require students to use discussion and scientific approaches to solve problems and deliberate potential policy solutions. Deliberative democracy (DD) is one such active learning approach in which students work in peer groups to reach a consensus on a scientific topic relevant to both real-world issues and course content. During DD …

The Triassic Saharonim Formation Of The Sephardic Province On The Southern Tethyan Margin Is An Analog For The Triassic Germanic Muschelkalk Of Western Europe, Howard R. Feldman, Talia J. Belowich

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The Germanic Muschelkalk consists of a sedimentary sequence of limestone and dolostone units that overlies the Permian Buntsandstein Formation and underlies the Middle and Late Triassic Keuper Formation. The three formations form the Germanic Triassic Supergroup. The Muschelkalk was deposited in a shallow marine environment that was only partially connected to the Tethys Ocean to the south with the middle section evaporitic indicating a restricted basin. Fossiliferous beds are often biostromal such as the well-known Coenothyris brachiopod beds (e.g. Terebratula Bed, terebratulid facies) common in the Muschelkalk. The Saharonim Formation of the Sephardic Province, found along the southern shore of …

A Different Kind Of Learning For A Different Kind Of Learner : Justification Of And Best Practices For The Use Of Performing Arts Education For Autistic Students, Jacob Anthony Litt

Honors Theses

In our culture, our history, and our society, the arts play a vital role. However, despite maintaining such a fundamental place in our shared experiences, the arts’ role in education is in constant need of clarification and defense. In addition, the presence of individuals with cognitive and developmental disabilities has become increasingly common in society, and yet special educational programs for these individuals, especially in their early years, have proven unable to find total success. These two fields of education – arts education and special education – thus share a common struggle: a need to find an established place in …

Climate-Change-Driven Accelerated Sea-Level Rise Detected In The Altimeter Era, R. S. Nerem, B. D. Beckley, J. T. Fasullo, B. D. Hamlington, D. Masters, G. T. Mitchum Jan 2018

Climate-Change-Driven Accelerated Sea-Level Rise Detected In The Altimeter Era, R. S. Nerem, B. D. Beckley, J. T. Fasullo, B. D. Hamlington, D. Masters, G. T. Mitchum

CCPO Publications

Using a 25-y time series of precision satellite altimeter data from TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2, and Jason-3, we estimate the climate-change-driven acceleration of global mean sea level over the last 25 y to be 0.084 ± 0.025 mm/y2. Coupled with the average climate-change-driven rate of sea level rise over these same 25 y of 2.9 mm/y, simple extrapolation of the quadratic implies global mean sea level could rise 65 ± 12 cm by 2100 compared with 2005, roughly in agreement with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report (AR5) model projections.

Analyzing The Spectral Energy Cascade In Turbulent Channel Flow, João Rodrigo Andrade, Ramon Silva Martins, Gilmar Mompean, Laurent Thais, Thomas B. Gatski

CCPO Publications

An analysis of the spectral turbulent kinetic energy budget in a fully developed turbulent plane channel flow is performed. Direct numerical simulation data are evaluated at friction Reynolds numbers Reτ of 180 and 1000. The analysis is focused on the influence of the Reynolds number on the spectral cascade of energy and the corresponding energy cascade in physical space in the presence of inhomogeneity and anisotropy. The turbulent kinetic energy distribution is compared for both Reynolds numbers, and the relevant characteristics of the energy transfer process in a wall-bounded turbulent flow are described. Differences in energy cascade are noted …

Future Nuisance Flooding In Norfolk, Va, From Astronomical Tides And Annual To Decadal Internal Climate Variability, A. G. Burgos, B. D. Hamlington, P. R. Thompson, R. D. Ray Jan 2018

Future Nuisance Flooding In Norfolk, Va, From Astronomical Tides And Annual To Decadal Internal Climate Variability, A. G. Burgos, B. D. Hamlington, P. R. Thompson, R. D. Ray

OES Faculty Publications

Increasing sea level rise will lead to more instances of nuisance flooding along the Virginia coastline in the coming decades, causing road closures and deteriorating infrastructure. These minor flood events can be caused by astronomical tides alone, in addition to internal climate variability on annual to decadal timescales. An assessment of nuisance flooding from these two effects is presented up until the year 2050 for Norfolk, Virginia. The analysis of water levels indicates that nuisance flooding from tides alone in conjunction with a medium-high sea level scenario will result in flooding beginning in 2030 with frequency increasing thereafter. The addition …

OES Faculty Publications

Over the past two decades, sea level measurements made by satellites have given clear indications of both global and regional sea level rise. Numerous studies have sought to leverage the modern satellite record and available historic sea level data provided by tide gauges to estimate past sea level rise, leading to several estimates for the 20th century trend in global mean sea level in the range between 1 and 2 mm/yr. On regional scales, few attempts have been made to estimate trends over the same time period. This is due largely to the inhomogeneity and quality of the tide …

Religious Identity Formation: Constraints Imposed On Religious Institutions And Implications For The Meaning Of Religious Affiliation, Marc Von Der Ruhr, Paul Ngo, Joseph P. Daniels

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Religiosity in the United States remains a strong social force. The United States persistently demonstrates higher religious participation than Europe. Some recent trends documented by the Pew Research Center in its 2008 and 2015 publications on the U.S. religious landscape, however, cite evidence that different religious groups are experiencing very different trends in participation. These trends show a recent and significant decline among many moderate Protestant denominations but a modest increase in participation at fundamentalist churches. The Pew Research Center similarly documents significant inconsistencies between what a religious hierarchy teaches versus what individuals personally choose to believe. For example, and …

The Sec's Forgotten Power Of Exemption: How The Sec Can Receive Deference In Favor Of Internal Whistleblowers Even When The Text Is Clear, Lesley Chen

Emory Law Journal

In 2008, the United States suffered its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. This crisis was precipitated by corporate fraud committed by some of the largest Wall Street firms. Congress responded by passing the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank) to improve accountability and transparency in the financial system. Recognizing the importance of whistleblowers in exposing corporate fraud, Congress included an anti-retaliation provision in Dodd-Frank, which was designed to protect whistleblowers from retaliation after coming forward with evidence of corporate wrongdoings. This Comment surveys existing case law to highlight how the SEC may still …
