This paper presents the results of a program of computational modeling focused on elucidating the physics and chemical processes associated with the extraction of volatile materials from asteroid feedstocks with an eye toward use of the extracted materials for propulsion, radiation shielding, and replenishment of mission consumables. We present a math model of conductive heat transport, chemical processes, and gas escape by Darcian diffusion. Chemical processes in the model include pyrolysis of organic chemical constituents and thermal dehydration and decarbonization of hydrates and carbonates. The model is implemented in a spherical finite difference computational engine that predicts time histories of …

Geodesic Structure In Schwarzschild Geometry With Extensions In Higher Dimensional Spacetimes, Ian M. Newsome Jan 2018

Geodesic Structure In Schwarzschild Geometry With Extensions In Higher Dimensional Spacetimes, Ian M. Newsome

Theses and Dissertations

From Birkoff's theorem, the geometry in four spacetime dimensions outside a spherically symmetric and static, gravitating source must be given by the Schwarzschild metric. This metric therefore satisfies the Einstein vacuum equations. If the mass which gives rise to the Schwarzschild spacetime geometry is concentrated within a radius of r=2M, a black hole will form. Non-accelerating particles (freely falling) traveling through this geometry will do so along parametrized curves called geodesics, which are curved space generalizations of straight paths. These geodesics can be found by solving the geodesic equation. In this thesis, the geodesic structure in the Schwarzschild geometry …

Modeling Fluid Motion Over Fibrous Surfaces, Delli Ganesh Venkateshan Jan 2018

Modeling Fluid Motion Over Fibrous Surfaces, Delli Ganesh Venkateshan

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this project has been to develop a computational model for quantifying the interactions between of a body of fluid and a fibrous surface. To achieve this goal, one has to develop a model to create virtual structures that resemble the morphology of a fibrous surface (Objective-1) as well as a model that can simulate the flow of a fluid over these virtual surfaces (Objective-2). To achieve the first objective, we treated fibers as an array of beads interconnected through viscoelastic elements (springs and dampers). The uniqueness of our algorithm lies in its ability to simulate the …

Experimental Evaluation Of Uranyl Transport Into Mesoporous Silica Gel Using Fluorescence, Brandon M. Dodd Jan 2018

Experimental Evaluation Of Uranyl Transport Into Mesoporous Silica Gel Using Fluorescence, Brandon M. Dodd

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated parameters that can affect the use of nanoporous silica gel as a media for accumulating a detectable amount of uranium. The unique fluorescence of the Uranyl (UO22+) ion was used to evaluate the transport kinetics and accumulation within silica gel in a static fluid and under pressure driven flow. The addition of fluid flow decreased the time constant from on the order of an hour to approximately 2s with a very low fluid velocity of 0.36cm/s. The 0.36cm/s fluid velocity was found to be the critical velocity above which there was no gain in …

Polyanthroponemia: A Pursuit Of Mystery, Magdolene Dykstra Jan 2018

Polyanthroponemia: A Pursuit Of Mystery, Magdolene Dykstra

Theses and Dissertations

I wish I could believe in something. Having grown up in a religious household, I have continually teetered between faith and doubt. Landscapes seen and unseen are my last source of awe; here my doubt is suspended – for a moment. Using unfired clay, I create alternate landscapes inspired by sublime philosophy. The sublime experience is born in a sense of amazement linked to fear of something beyond our understanding or control. The amazing intricacy of microbiology, a whole universe existing alongside and inside us, fascinates me. The abundance of unfamiliar life in my work triggers a cautious curiosity. My …

Every English Learner Succeeds: The Need For Uniform Entry And Exit Requirements, Ana A. Núñez Cárdenas Jan 2018

Every English Learner Succeeds: The Need For Uniform Entry And Exit Requirements, Ana A. Núñez Cárdenas

Brooklyn Law Review

While the number of English Learners (ELs) continues to significantly grow in the United States, the focus on their education is still severely lacking. During the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) era, the federal role in education greatly expanded, holding states accountable for their practices and ensuring academic proficiency. Even with the federal government’s expanded role ELs’ academic achievements did not improve and were further frustrated under the NCLB. In 2005, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was introduced to ameliorate the harmful stain the NCLB left on education. Under the ESSA, the states regained both their autonomy and flexibility …

Contested Visions: The Value Of Systems Theory For Corporate Law, Tamara Belinfanti, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2018

Contested Visions: The Value Of Systems Theory For Corporate Law, Tamara Belinfanti, Lynn A. Stout

Articles & Chapters

Despite the dominant role corporations play in our economy, culture, and politics, the nature and purpose of corporations remains hotly contested. This conflict was brought to the fore in the recent Supreme Court opinions in Citizens United and Hobby Lobby. Although the prevailing narrative for the past quarter-century has been that corporations “belong” to shareholders and should pursue “shareholder value,” support for this approach, which has been justified as essential for managerial accountability, is eroding. It persists today primarily in the form of the argument that corporations should seek “long-term” shareholder value. Yet, as this Article shows, when shareholder value …

Suggesting Missing Information In Text Documents, Grant Michael Hodgson Jan 2018

Suggesting Missing Information In Text Documents, Grant Michael Hodgson

Theses and Dissertations

A key part of contract drafting involves thinking of issues that have not been addressedand adding language that will address the missing issues. To assist attorneys with this task, we present a pipeline approach for identifying missing information within a contract section. The pipeline takes a contract section as input and includes 1) identifying sections that are similar to the input section from a corpus of contract sections; and 2) identifying and suggesting information from the similar sections that are missing from the input section. By taking advantage of sentence embedding and principal component analysis, this approach suggests sentences that …

Does God Have A Body? Rāmānuja’S Challenge To The Christian Tradition, Jon Paul Sydnor Jan 2018

Does God Have A Body? Rāmānuja’S Challenge To The Christian Tradition, Jon Paul Sydnor

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Christian tradition’s core theological assertion is the embodiment of God in the person of Jesus Christ. Yet, even while asserting God’s incarnation in space and time, the tradition has usually denied embodiment unto the Godhead itself. Theologians have based this denial on Jewish iconoclasm, Greek idealism, and inferences from God’s omnipresence, transcendence, and infinity. This speculative essay will argue that Hindu Śrīvaiṣṇava theologian Rāmānuja successfully addresses these concerns. He argues for the embodiment of an omnipresent, transcendent, and infinite personal God. Rāmānuja largely derives his arguments from the Hindu scriptures. Nevertheless, their rational explication and internal coherence render divine …

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Photonics For Electro-Optics, Nonlinear Optics, And Quantum Optics On Silicon, Ashutosh Rao Jan 2018

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Photonics For Electro-Optics, Nonlinear Optics, And Quantum Optics On Silicon, Ashutosh Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ion-sliced thin-film lithium niobate (LN) compact waveguide technology has facilitated the resurgence of integrated photonics based on lithium niobate. These thin-film LN waveguides offer over an order of magnitude improvement in optical confinement, and about two orders of magnitude reduction in waveguide bending radius, compared to conventional LN waveguides. Harnessing the improved confinement, a variety of miniaturized and efficient photonic devices are demonstrated in this work. First, two types of compact electrooptic modulators are presented – microring modulators, and Mach-Zehnder modulators. Next, two distinct approaches to nonlinear optical frequency converters are implemented – periodically poled lithium niobate, and mode shape …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We seek to investigate the complexity and heterogeneity of the surfaces of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). In particular, we are studying the S-complex NEAs, which account for a large portion of the observed near-Earth objects. Here we present our results for (1627) Ivar, an Amor class NEA with taxonomic type Sqw. In 2013, Ivar's large size and close approach to Earth (minimum distance 0.32 AU) provided an opportunity to observe the asteroid over many different viewing angles for an extended period of time. We collected delay-Doppler radar images and Doppler spectra using the Arecibo Observatory's 2380 MHz radar, and, by incorporating …

Electronic, Optical, And Magnetic Properties Of Graphene And Single-Layer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides In The Presence Of Defects, Mahtab Khan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene and single-layer (SL) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), have attracted a lot of attention due to their fascinating electronic and optical properties. Graphene was the first 2D material that has successfully been exfoliated from bulk graphite in 2004. In graphene, charge carriers interacting with the honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms of graphene to appear as massless Dirac fermions. Massless quasiparticles with linear dispersion are also observed in surface states of 3D topological insulators and quantum Hall edge states. My first project deals with the two-dimensional Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) type interference experiment for massless Dirac fermions in …

Dynamically Tunable Plasmonic Structural Color, Daniel Franklin Jan 2018

Dynamically Tunable Plasmonic Structural Color, Daniel Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Functional surfaces which can control light across the electromagnetic spectrum are highly desirable. With the aid of advanced modeling and fabrication techniques, researchers have demonstrated surfaces with near arbitrary tailoring of reflected/transmitted amplitude, phase and polarization - the applications for which are diverse as light itself. These systems often comprise of structured metals and dielectrics that, when combined, manifest resonances dependent on structural dimensions. This attribute provides a convenient and direct path to arbitrarily engineer the surface's optical characteristics across many electromagnetic regimes. But while many of these plasmonic systems struggle to compete with the efficiency of pre-existing technologies, the …

Development And Characterization Of Solid-Contact Paper-Based And Micro Ion-Selective Electrodes For Environmental Analysis, Stephanie Armas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have extensively been used for food analysis, as medical diagnostic tools, and for some environmental applications. However, ISEs are hindered by the need of a bulky reference electrode and the pre-conditioning step of the sensor, which can often be lengthy. This work will discuss how the direct addition of target analyte into the cocktail sensing membrane can circumvent the pre-conditioning step. Furthermore, the work is presented in an optimized ready-to-use single strip design, where the bulky glass reference electrode (RE) is no longer needed. The bulky RE was replaced by drop casting a simple two-component mixture consisting …

Far-Infrared Bands In Plasmonic Metal-Insulator-Metal Absorbers Optimized For Long Wave Infrared, Rachel Evans Jan 2018

Far-Infrared Bands In Plasmonic Metal-Insulator-Metal Absorbers Optimized For Long Wave Infrared, Rachel Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Metal–insulator–metal (MIM) resonant absorbers comprise a conducting ground plane, a thin dielectric, and thin separated metal top-surface structures. Long-wave infrared (LWIR) fundamental absorptions are experimentally shown to be optimized for a ratio of dielectric thickness to top-structure dimension t/l > 0.08. The fundamental resonance wavelength is predicted by different analytic standing-wave theories to be ~2nl, where n is the dielectric refractive index. Thus, for the dielectrics SiO2, AlN, and TiO2, l values of a few microns give fundamentals in the 8-12 micron LWIR wavelength region. Agreement of observed fundamental resonance wavelength with theory is better for t/l > ~0.2. Harmonics at shorter …
