Analyzing Formation Of Silver Nanoparticles From The Filamentous Fungus Fusarium Oxysporum And Their Antimicrobial Activity, Abd-Almohaimen Ahmed, Haider Hamzah, Mohammed Maaroof

Turkish Journal of Biology

In recent years much attention has been paid to the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their important medical applications. The current study employs Fusarium oxysporum for the formation of silver nanoparticles and examines the antimicrobial activity of the particles against some multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbes. Silver nitrate was transformed into silver oxide, forming well-dispersed nanoparticles, by the action of F. oxysporum metabolically. The size of the nanoparticles ranged from 21.3 to 37.3 nm, and UV-spectroscopy showed a peak at 408-411 nm. Moreover, SEM, TEM, and AFM results revealed spherical and oval shapes and showed no sign of aggregation. Furthermore, the …

Oxidative Stress Upregulates The Transcription Of Genes Involved In Thiaminemetabolism, Burcu Kartal, Ahmet Akçay, Bedi̇a Palabiyik

Turkish Journal of Biology

Thiamine is a major vitamin that acts as a cofactor in energy metabolism in all organisms, as well as in lipid and amino acid metabolisms, and is associated with many diseases. It is known that glucose starvation decreases the intracellular thiamine pool while increasing oxidative stress tolerance. Earlier, in whole genome analysis, we detected major differences in the expression of genes related to thiamine pathway against oxidative stress in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We investigated the effects of oxidative stress and glucose repression to thiamine pathway in S. pombe by comparing some genes encoding key enzymes of each related pathway at the …

Cloud Transactions And Caching For Improved Performance In Clouds And Dtns, Dileep Mardham Jan 2018

Cloud Transactions And Caching For Improved Performance In Clouds And Dtns, Dileep Mardham

Masters Theses

"In distributed transactional systems deployed over some massively decentralized cloud servers, access policies are typically replicated. Interdependencies ad inconsistencies among policies need to be addressed as they can affect performance, throughput and accuracy. Several stringent levels of policy consistency constraints and enforcement approaches to guarantee the trustworthiness of transactions on cloud servers are proposed. We define a look-up table to store policy versions and the concept of "Tree-Based Consistency" approach to maintain a tree structure of the servers. By integrating look-up table and the consistency tree based approach, we propose an enhanced version of Two-phase validation commit (2PVC) protocol integrated …

Autonomous Decentralised M2m Application Service Provision, Michael Steinheimer Jan 2018

Autonomous Decentralised M2m Application Service Provision, Michael Steinheimer

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Machine-to-Machine Communication (M2M) service platforms integrate M2M devices and enable realisation of applications using the M2M devices to support processes, mostly in the business domain. Many application-specific vertical implementations of M2M service platforms exist as well as efforts to define horizontal M2M service platforms. Both approaches usually have central components or stakeholders of which the entire M2M system or the user depends. With regards to the end-user, more and more M2M devices provide resources, such as environmental information (e.g. energy consumption data) or control options (e.g. switching energy consumer). These resources offer great potential for supporting smart environments and it …

Investigating The Moment When Solutions Emerge In Problem Solving, Frank Lösche Jan 2018

Investigating The Moment When Solutions Emerge In Problem Solving, Frank Lösche

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

At some point during a creative action something clicks, suddenly the prospective problem solver just knows the solution to a problem, and a feeling of joy and relief arises. This phenomenon, called Eureka experience, insight, Aha moment, hunch, epiphany, illumination, or serendipity, has been part of human narrations for thousands of years. It is the moment of a subjective experience, a surprising, and sometimes a life-changing event. In this thesis, I narrow down this moment 1. conceptually, 2. experientially, and 3. temporally. The concept of emerging solutions has a multidisciplinary background in Cognitive Science, Arts, Design, and Engineering. Through the …

We Are One: The Role Of Group Identity And Self-Sacrificial Leaders On The Generation Of Social Capital Within Youth Sport Programs, Dorothy R. Collins Jan 2018

We Are One: The Role Of Group Identity And Self-Sacrificial Leaders On The Generation Of Social Capital Within Youth Sport Programs, Dorothy R. Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Popular culture often assumes that participation in youth sport has a host of positive benefits, including the ability to generate social capital, spur future occupational success and encourage greater levels of civic engagement (Coalter, 2007). There is; however, little empirical evidence to support this ideal (Coakley, 2011). In fact, little is known about the specific conditions within a sport organization that likely to facilitate youth sport organizations to become more adept at generating, maintaining, and distributing social capital to their members. Using the Community of Practice framework (Wenger, McDermott & Snyder, 2002) as a lens, the author investigated the conditions …

Academic Motivation Profiles Of 10th Grade Students: Exploring A Relationship With Socioeconomic Level Using A Person Oriented Approach, Sandra Lynn Rogelberg

Theses and Dissertations

Motivation is an important predictor of educational success, as is socioeconomic status. This study used Expectancy Value Theory (EVT) and a person oriented approach as the framework to explore how motivation profiles may be related to context, namely socioeconomic status (SES), and the roles these profiles have in predicting education outcomes. Five motivation variables: math self-efficacy, reading self-efficacy, control expectation, action control, and utility value (instrumentation motivation) were used in latent profile analysis to determine four latent motivation profiles from a national sample of 10,981 10th grade students using ELS:2002 data. Family income and education level (SES) were considered a …

The Impact Of Inquiry-Based Learning On Academic Achievement In Eighth-Grade Social Studies, Lindsey A. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of practice described in this paper was identified by varying academic performances of students in a middle school located in South Carolina. The identified problem led the researcher to formulate a research question: What is the impact of inquiry-based learning on academic achievement for eighth-grade students in social studies? The purpose of this study is to determine if implementing inquiry-based learning will affect the academic achievement of students in social studies. Action research allows teachers to study their own classrooms to better understand them and to be able to improve their quality or effectiveness (Mertler, 2014). Action research …

Development Of A High-Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Libs Spectrometer, Kevin A. Dudley Jan 2018

Development Of A High-Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Libs Spectrometer, Kevin A. Dudley

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic emission technique that uses a pulse laser to ablate a sample and form a plasma. Atomic emissions from the plasma provide unique elemental characteristics regarding the composition of the sample. The technique produces valuable qualitative results, but the accuracy of quantitative analyses is hindered by spectral line broadening mechanisms and laser pulse reproducibility, among other factors. The Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer (SHS) is a high-resolution spectrometer with very high light throughput, and its use to LIBS is currently limited to two peer-reviewed publications. In the following work a high resolution SHS is developed and …

Quantifying Time Retarded Electromagnetic Fields And Their Applications In Transmission Lines, Brandon Thomas Gore Jan 2018

Quantifying Time Retarded Electromagnetic Fields And Their Applications In Transmission Lines, Brandon Thomas Gore

Theses and Dissertations

Modern baseband signaling that facilitates the passing of information over high speed interconnects such as copper twin-ax cable and printed circuit boards supports single line data rates of 100 Gbps. Next generation bandwidth requirements of electrical links are approaching frequencies up to 50 GHz. Yet, signal integrity engineers that analyze these interconnects rely on models with underlying assumptions and limited extensions beyond those proposed in the 19th century to describe per unit length characteristics of Resistance, Inductance, Conductance, and Capacitance (RLGC) for transatlantic telegraph cable. An excluded phenomenon is the time retarded behavior of electromagnetic fields. The aim of this …

Epistemological Issues In Quality Of Life Measurement And Their Implications, Laura M. Cupples Jan 2018

Epistemological Issues In Quality Of Life Measurement And Their Implications, Laura M. Cupples

Theses and Dissertations

This project explores the epistemology of quality of life measurement. Quality of life measures face a dual epistemic burden both to serve as data for the evidence-based medicine movement and to give patients a greater voice (McClimans 2017). Much time, effort, and money has been invested in these measures over the last 50 years, and yet their theoretical foundations remain weak. It is not clear whether these instruments succeed in measuring what they purport to measure, or what precisely is meant by “quality of life” (Hunt 1997). The epistemic challenges faced in quality of life measurement are not wholly unique. …

Classical And Quantum Kac’S Chaos, Rade Musulin Jan 2018

Classical And Quantum Kac’S Chaos, Rade Musulin

Theses and Dissertations

In 1956 Kac studied the Boltzmann equation, an integro-differential equation which describes the density function of the distribution of the velocities of the molecules of dilute monoatomic gases under the assumption that the energy is only transferred via collisions between the molecules. In an attempt at a solution to the Boltzmann equation, Kac introduced a property of the density function that he called the “Boltzmann property" which describes the behavior of the density function at a given fixed time as the number of particles tends to infinity. The Boltzmann property has been studied extensively since then, and has been abstracted …

Improving Speech-Related Facial Action Unit Recognition By Audiovisual Information Fusion, Zibo Meng Jan 2018

Improving Speech-Related Facial Action Unit Recognition By Audiovisual Information Fusion, Zibo Meng

Theses and Dissertations

In spite of great progress achieved on posed facial display and controlled image acquisition, performance of facial action unit (AU) recognition degrades significantly for spontaneous facial displays. Furthermore, recognizing AUs accompanied with speech is even more challenging since they are generally activated at a low intensity with subtle facial appearance/geometrical changes during speech, and more importantly, often introduce ambiguity in detecting other co-occurring AUs, e.g., producing non-additive appearance changes. All the current AU recognition systems utilized information extracted only from visual channel. However, sound is highly correlated with visual channel in human communications. Thus, we propose to exploit both audio …

Comparison Of The Performance Of Simple Linear Regression And Quantile Regression With Non-Normal Data: A Simulation Study, Marjorie Howard Jan 2018

Comparison Of The Performance Of Simple Linear Regression And Quantile Regression With Non-Normal Data: A Simulation Study, Marjorie Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Linear regression is a widely used method for analysis that is well understood across a wide variety of disciplines. In order to use linear regression, a number of assumptions must be met. These assumptions, specifically normality and homoscedasticity of the error distribution can at best be met only approximately with real data. Quantile regression requires fewer assumptions, which offers a potential advantage over linear regression. In this simulation study, we compare the performance of linear (least squares) regression to quantile regression when these assumptions are violated, in order to investigate under what conditions quantile regression becomes the more advantageous method …

Dimension Reduction For Classification With Many Covariates And Pathway Activity Level Estimation, Seungchul Baek Jan 2018

Dimension Reduction For Classification With Many Covariates And Pathway Activity Level Estimation, Seungchul Baek

Theses and Dissertations

The development of science and technology has enabled the use of more covariates. As a result, it has become more difficult to identify dependencies among many covariates. Dimension reduction provides an efficient way to handle this issue by summarizing the effect of covariates via a few linear combinations of covariates. In this dissertation, two methodologies for real-life problems are provided by using dimension reduction equipped with semiparametric theory. The use of semiparametrics allows maximal flexibility of the model by letting some features of the model completely unspecified, while we still enjoy the interpretability of the model through estimating the parameters …

Theory, Computation, And Modeling Of Cancerous Systems, Sameed Ahmed Jan 2018

Theory, Computation, And Modeling Of Cancerous Systems, Sameed Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on three projects. In Chapter 1, we derive and implement the compact implicit integration factor method for numerically solving partial differential equations. In Chapters 2 and 3, we generalize and analyze a mathematical model for the nonlinear growth kinetics of breast cancer stem cells. And in Chapter 4, we develop a novel mathematical model for the HER2 signaling pathway to understand and predict breast cancer treatment. Due to the high order spatial derivatives and stiff reactions, severe temporal stability constraints on the time step are generally required when developing numerical methods for solving high order partial differential …

Prospective Comparison Of Point-Of-Care Device And Standard Analyzer For Monitoring Of International Normalized Ratio In Outpatient Oral Anticoagulant Clinic, Bushra Moiz, Ahmed Raheem, Anila Rashid, Muhammad Hasan, Lena Jafri

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Point-of-care testing (POCT) coagulometers are increasingly being used in the hospital setting and patients’ self-testing. We determined the agreement of prothrombin time international normalized ratio (INR) results by POCT coagulometer and laboratory instrument through a comparative analysis and investigated whether the results of POCT coagulometer can reliably be used without being confirmed by standard laboratory analyzer. A total of 200 INR measurements by POCT coagulometer (CoaguChek XS Pro) and laboratory analyzer (Sysmex CS2000i) were compared using Passing-Bablok regression analysis and Bland-Altman plot. Agreement of the INR measurement was further analyzed in relation to dosing decision. The correlation of INR measurements …

Microstructural Changes To Proso Millet Protein Bodies Upon Cooking And Digestion, Paridhi Gulati, You Zhou, Christian Elowsky, Devin J. Rose Jan 2018

Microstructural Changes To Proso Millet Protein Bodies Upon Cooking And Digestion, Paridhi Gulati, You Zhou, Christian Elowsky, Devin J. Rose

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Cooking results in a drastic decline in digestibility of proso millet proteins, panicins. Scanning electron and confocal microscopy were used to observe morphological changes in proso millet protein bodies upon cooking and digestion that could be associated with the loss in digestibility. Spherical protein bodies (1–2.5 mm) were observed in proso millet flour and extracted protein. Cooking did not result in any noticeable change in the size or shape of the protein bodies. However, upon digestion with pepsin the poor digestibility of cooked proso millet protein was clearly evident from the differences in microstructure of the protein bodies: large cavities …

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The search for new magnetic materials with high magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy is important for a wide range of applications including information and energy processing. There is only a limited number of naturally occurring magnetic compounds that are suitable. This situation stimulates an exploration of new phases that occur far from thermal-equilibrium conditions, but their stabilization is generally inhibited due to high positive formation energies. Here a nanocluster-deposition method has enabled the discovery of a set of new non-equilibrium Co-N intermetallic compounds. The experimental search was assisted by computational methods including adaptive-genetic-algorithm and electronic- structure calculations. Conventional wisdom is that …

Theses

In 2008, the implementation of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in all schools across Australia. This assessment of mathematical and literacy standards across Australia raised questions about the impact which high-stakes testing has on teaching and learning. This research specifically focused on the effect NAPLAN has had on the teaching and learning of mathematics. The study explored perspectives about NAPLAN from key participants; students, teachers and parents at one Western Australian Primary School. These perspectives included the potential anxiety experienced by students and how this affected their performance in NAPLAN. According to recent research on …

Experimental Measurement Of Dolphin Thrust Generated During A Tail Stand Using Dpiv, Frank E. Fish, Terrie M. Williams, Erica Sherman, Yae Eun Moon, Vicki Wu, Timothy Wei Jan 2018

Experimental Measurement Of Dolphin Thrust Generated During A Tail Stand Using Dpiv, Frank E. Fish, Terrie M. Williams, Erica Sherman, Yae Eun Moon, Vicki Wu, Timothy Wei

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Estimation of force generated by dolphins has long been debated. The problem was that indirect estimates of force production for dolphins resulted in low values that could not be validated. Bubble digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) measured hydrodynamic force production for swimming dolphins and demonstrated high force production. To validate the bubble DPIV and reconcile force production measurements, two bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) performing tail stands were measured with bubble DPIV. Microbubbles were generated from a finely porous hose and compressed air source. Displacement of the bubbles by the propulsive motions of the dolphin was tracked with a …
