Contributing Factors To The Successful Completion Of Online Courses At The Community College Level, Patricia K. Evans-Wallin Oct 2018

Contributing Factors To The Successful Completion Of Online Courses At The Community College Level, Patricia K. Evans-Wallin

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This study sought to determine if the discrepancy between successful completion rates of online and face-to-face courses at the community college level is partially due to differences in the proportion of part-time students and the proportion of students without clear academic goals in each modality. In addition, this study looked to see if relationships exist between successful completion of online courses and the proportion of coursework taken online in a given term. An archival data set containing 20,119 student records for the fall of 2016 from a community college in the western United States was utilized for this study. The …

Understanding Dyslexia In The Context Of Developmental Language Disorders, Suzanne M. Adlof, Tiffany P. Hogan Oct 2018

Understanding Dyslexia In The Context Of Developmental Language Disorders, Suzanne M. Adlof, Tiffany P. Hogan

Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this tutorial is to discuss the language basis of dyslexia in the context of developmental language disorders (DLDs). Whereas most studies have focused on the phonological skills of children with dyslexia, we bring attention to broader language skills. Method: We conducted a focused literature review on the language basis of dyslexia from historical and theoretical perspectives with a special emphasis on the relation between dyslexia and DLD and on the development of broader language skills (e.g., vocabulary, syntax, and discourse) before and after the identification of dyslexia. Results: We present clinically relevant information on the history …

The Medievalizing Process: Religious Medievalism In Romantic And Victorian Literature, Timothy M. Curran Oct 2018

The Medievalizing Process: Religious Medievalism In Romantic And Victorian Literature, Timothy M. Curran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Medievalizing Process: Religious Medievalism in Romantic and Victorian Literature posits religious medievalism as one among many critical paradigms through which we might better understand literary efforts to bring notions of sanctity back into the modern world. As a cultural and artistic practice, medievalism processes the loss of medieval forms of understanding in the modern imagination and resuscitates these lost forms in new and imaginative ways to serve the purposes of the present. My dissertation proposes religious medievalism as a critical method that decodes modern texts’ lamentations over a perceived loss of the sacred. My project locates textual moments in …

Carlos Puebla And The People's History Of The Cuban Revolution (1956-1980), Juan Rodríguez-Cepero Oct 2018

Carlos Puebla And The People's History Of The Cuban Revolution (1956-1980), Juan Rodríguez-Cepero

LSU Master's Theses

The Cuban Revolution was one of the most important events in 20th century Latin American history. The unlikely success of revolutionary heroes such as Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara inspired not only similar movements throughout the region, but an entire generation of artists and musicians. One such artist was Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Puebla. A long-time critic of Batista and his corrupt administration, Puebla set to music the ideals that the Revolution sought to build a new Cuba upon. In a country which

most of the population was illiterate until 1961, the music of artists such as Puebla served as …

Scaffolded Play As A Predictor Of Change In Language And Play In Children With Autism, Cara Tyson Oct 2018

Scaffolded Play As A Predictor Of Change In Language And Play In Children With Autism, Cara Tyson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A child’s play is facilitative of language development, creating a situation where words are needed to speak to and for toy characters, socially engage with peers, and develop play narratives. Children with language disorders, in particular autism spectrum disorder, often fail to engage in play activities at levels of their typically developing peers. However, under highly structured conditions, or scaffolded conditions, children with autism have demonstrated the ability to engage in play at similar levels as their typically developing peers. It remains unclear whether direct teaching of play under scaffolded conditions will predict language skills over time for this population. …

Theatre And The Overwhelming Question: Why Make Theatre In These Times?, Mónica Valeria Sánchez Oct 2018

Theatre And The Overwhelming Question: Why Make Theatre In These Times?, Mónica Valeria Sánchez

Theatre & Dance ETDs

The following essay communicates my journey as a longtime theatre artist as I have navigated my way through the discipline, and towards the craft of playwriting. My intention to study in the program was soon escalated by an existential turning point subsequent to the neoliberal agenda that gained momentum pre, post, and during the election of 2016. This thesis is in response to the question, "Why make theatre now?" I approach this query through the themes and the characters in my plays; through a socio-cultural-historic lens, and via an examination of the creative process as it relates to the metaphysics …

Asian Immigrants In Leadership Roles In The United States: Exploration For Leader Development, Ramil L. Cabela Oct 2018

Asian Immigrants In Leadership Roles In The United States: Exploration For Leader Development, Ramil L. Cabela

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cultural identity and resource availability aspects in traditional leadership development literature remain understudied, especially among minority populations like Asian immigrants.

This study explores the leadership journeys of 24 United States immigrants from China, India and the Philippines using a phenomenological approach, primarily with semi-structured interviews. Experiences of 18 additional immigrant leaders published in popular media were also analyzed.

Data from the study reveals that Asian migrants’ roads to leadership in U.S. organizations are heterogeneous and characterized by either linear or nonlinear, overlapping phases of leader development where migrant leaders overcome assimilation challenges and leverage their unique, individual human capital to …

Exploring Linguistic Space Occupied By The Teachers And Students Of An Esl Classroom In Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan: Comparisons Across Gender, Zaheer Abbas, Musa Ali, Safeer Hussain

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Classroom talk plays a key role in language learning especially in English as second language (ESL) classrooms. Therefore, in this study the linguistic space occupied by the teacher and students in an ESL classroom has been investigated. A descriptive and exploratory approach was employed and videotaping was used for data collection during five consecutive classroom lessons. Results revealed that the teacher occupied most of the linguistics space (60%) as compared to the students (40%). The average word count of boys (56%) was comparatively higher than that of girls’ word count (44%). This study reports important insights into the patterns of …

Fast Professor: Strategies For Surviving The Tenure Track, Patricia Welsh Droz, Lorie Stagg Jacobs Oct 2018

Fast Professor: Strategies For Surviving The Tenure Track, Patricia Welsh Droz, Lorie Stagg Jacobs

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

In response to Maggie Berg and Barbara Seeber’s 2016 manifesto on academic deceleration, The Slow Professor, the present article posits that the slow approach is dangerous for those seeking tenure, but is nevertheless a fruitful resistance philosophy to be adopted once tenure is achieved. For those seeking tenure, we advise an alternative philosophy, FAST professing, as a means to mediate workplace stress and offer to those on the tenure-track a pragmatic alternative to premature slow professing. We outline the nature of the stress in today’s academic climate, suggest identifying the major sources of stress, and finally, offer strategies to …

Method Of Solving Incorrect Tasks Formed By Construction Of Fuzzy Models Assessing The Weakly Formallized Processes., D.T Muxamediyeva, X.A Primova

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The article examines the improvement of the method for obtaining a fuzzy and fuzzy-stable solution to incorrect problems arising in the construction of a model for estimating the state of weakly formalizable processes using various membership functions based on the theory of fuzzy sets. The proposed method makes it possible to construct a correct fuzzy model of weakly formalizable processes.
