The Annual Colloquium On International Engineering Education: How It All Began, John M. Grandin
The Annual Colloquium On International Engineering Education: How It All Began, John M. Grandin
Journal of International Engineering Education
As director emeritus of the International Engineering Program at the University of Rhode Island, John Grandin was in a good position to provide an overview of the evolution of the Colloquium on International Engineering Education at its twenty-year celebration at the University of Northern Arizona in 2017. This article is based on Grandin’s keynote address at the Arizona Colloquium in which he recalled how the Colloquium began, who the key stakeholders and driving forces were, how other programs got started nation-wide and how the momentum grew and led to the 2008 joint NSF sponsored workshop and the Newport Declaration to …

Development Of The Global Engineering Programming Model: A Participatory, Mixed-Methods Approach, Scott C. Streiner, Mary Elizabeth Besterfield-Sacre
Journal of International Engineering Education
Over the past few decades, higher education institutions have emphasized global education as a core aspect of their strategic goals, yet a gap exists in implementation at the school level, particularly in engineering. As engineering schools invest in internationalizing their programs, research is needed regarding key strategic areas and their relationship to sustained programming efforts. This study uses a participatory, integrative mixed-methods approach to develop an operational framework for global strategies, policies, and programs. A thematic, qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews followed by a group concept mapping activity was conducted with directors of study abroad and vice provosts of global …
The Theodramatic Imagination: Spirit And Imagination In The Work Of Kevin Vanhoozer, Justin Bailey
The Theodramatic Imagination: Spirit And Imagination In The Work Of Kevin Vanhoozer, Justin Bailey
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This article situates and evaluates the cultural hermeneutic method of theologian Kevin Vanhoozer. His “theodramatic imagination” sets forth a method for rightly interpreting both Scripture and culture. Fellow theologian William Dyrness criticizes Vanhoozer’s model as theoretical rather than theatrical, focused on extracted ideas instead of embedded imaginaries. The article argues that, although Dyrness’ critique misses its mark, the true disagreement is pneumatological in nature. In the view of the author, this is the real limitation for Vanhoozer’s method: he prepares us to recognize and respond to the Spirit at work in shaping the Church’s “theodramatic” imagination, but we are less …
An Evaluation Of Early Childhood Education Programs: The Parents’ Perspective Of Quality Care, Buu Chau Thai
An Evaluation Of Early Childhood Education Programs: The Parents’ Perspective Of Quality Care, Buu Chau Thai
Dissertations
Early childhood education (ECE) programs play a critical role in the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children and help to prepare them for kindergarten. Recognizing the benefits of ECE programs, state and federal governments have made notable efforts to make these programs more accessible. However, with various federal, state, and local governments involved in administering and funding ECE programs, a complex, fragmented, and oftentimes confusing system ensued, making the ECE landscape very difficult for parents to navigate. Parents are often the primary decision-makers when selecting educational programs for their children. Studies often focus on practitioners’ or researchers’ perspectives on …
Teacher And Administrator Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Related To Equity In A Suburban California School District, Arcia Dorosti
Teacher And Administrator Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Related To Equity In A Suburban California School District, Arcia Dorosti
Dissertations
This dissertation is a case study of one district’s efforts to reduce the disparities in
educational outcomes among its ethnic groups as well as the disparities in educational
outcomes between its economically disadvantaged students and its students that are not
economically disadvantaged. The literature reviewed began with the larger historical
context around equity issues in education and then discussed in-school and out-of-school
factors affecting educational outcomes. The methods used included interviews with
teachers and administrators, site visits, and classroom observations. The results
summarized the successes and remaining challenges facing the district as it continues its
desired journey towards more equitable …

Building positive relationships with students and employing relevant pedagogy
informed by Community Cultural Wealth will undoubtedly contribute to a more engaged community of learners that are vested in their community and academics. Aronson and Laughter (2015) amongst many others, studied and analyzed over 200 studies on the topic of culturally relevant education (CRE), and found convincing results that speak to the academic outcomes that are consistently reached whenever teachers employ CRE in the classroom (Cammarota, 2014; Covarrubias, 2017; Gay, 2010; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012;

A Glottometric Subgrouping Of The Early Germanic Languages, Joshua Agee
A Glottometric Subgrouping Of The Early Germanic Languages, Joshua Agee
Master's Theses
Historical Glottometry, introduced by Alexandre François (2014), is a wave-based quantitative approach to language subgrouping that is used to calculate the overall strength of a linguistic subgroup using metrics that capture the contributions of linguistic innovations of various scopes to language diversification, in consideration of the reality of their distributions. It primarily achieves this by acknowledging the contribution of areal diffusion to language diversification, which has traditionally been overlooked in cladistic (tree-based) models. In this thesis, the development of the Germanic language family, from the breakup of Proto-Germanic to the latest period of the early attested daughter languages (namely Gothic, …
Learning Chinese Characters And German Words Using Multimedia, Cheuk Yue Fung
Learning Chinese Characters And German Words Using Multimedia, Cheuk Yue Fung
Master's Theses
This study applies cognitive theory of multimedia learning and cognitive load theory to foreign language learning and examines in what conditions English-speakers benefit most from multimedia instruction. Sixty-four English-speaking college students learned either German words or Chinese characters. The reason for comparing these two languages is to assess the differences between low-knowledge and high-knowledge learners. We assume English-speakers have a better linguistic knowledge for learning German words than Chinese characters, because of the closer relationship between English and German languages than between English and Chinese languages. There were four cue conditions in which participants received either no cue, a verbal …

Framing The Syrian Refugee Crisis: A Comparative Analysis Of Arabic And English News Sources, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Caitlin Miles
Media Studies - All Scholarship
The mass exodus of millions of Syrians from their country due to worsening war conditions has become a serious global humanitarian crisis. As the number of displaced refugees rises, so does the number of those living in inhuman conditions. This content analysis examines how popular news discourses shape the geopolitics of the Syrian refugee crisis. We use framing theory to explore the main frames that emerged in a comparison of 10 Arabic news sources with seven English news sources in their coverage of the crisis. Based on a systematic random sample, 278 Arabic news stories and 210 English news stories …
After Faith, Hope, And Love: The Unique Divergence Of Asceticism By Gregory The Great And Maximus The Confessor, Caleb N. Zuiderveen
After Faith, Hope, And Love: The Unique Divergence Of Asceticism By Gregory The Great And Maximus The Confessor, Caleb N. Zuiderveen
Theses and Dissertations
In the late sixth and early seventh centuries, asceticism continued as a frequent expression of Christian devotion. Despite communications between the Eastern and Western Churches and a common patristic foundation, theology in the East and West during this time diverged on the results of asceticism. This paper explores this divergence by examining two theologians, Gregory the Great and Maximus the Confessor. Current scholarship has examined Gregory the Great and Maximus the Confessor on their own, yet the dialogue between each tradition and its implications remains understudied. Thus, this study contextualizes Gregory the Great’s On the Song of Songs and Maximus …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Bilingual Education On Language Achievement Of Kosovar Teenagers, Marigona Sefedini
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Bilingual Education On Language Achievement Of Kosovar Teenagers, Marigona Sefedini
UBT International Conference
The present study investigated the effect of bilingual education on language achievement of Kosovar EFL learners. It used bilingual education as an important factor on language achievement, its effect on a third language, and also in the cognitive development. To have a clearer image of the issue, the topic was researched through 40 bilingual learners and 40 monolingual learners. The bilingual learners were chosen according to their background of study. The bilinguals were students who were part of a private secondary school operating a bilingual program, which means every subject of the program was taught in two languages, English and …
Examining Student Engagement In The Learning Process, Marigona Sefedini
Examining Student Engagement In The Learning Process, Marigona Sefedini
UBT International Conference
Becoming skilled readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers requires ample opportunity for practice, authentic reasons for communicating, and effective instructional support (Marzano, 1992). To achieve competence in literacy, students must be motivated to engage with literacy tasks and to improve their proficiency as readers and writers. Instruction and practice then provide the coaching and feedback necessary to gain competence. Increased competence inspires continued motivation to engage (Irvin, 2007). This paper researches three levels on student engagement and how those levels can be enhanced. It first discovers behavioral engagement from students to reveal if behaviors have an influence in the learning …
Organization Of Cognitive Constructionist Memory (Occm) In Using Adverbial Subordinators As Cohesive Devices In Essay Writing In English, Florim Ajdini
UBT International Conference
In Psychology, the cognitive approach studies the mental processes of people; the organization of memory is a major area of research within this perspective. There are many theories of organization and memory originated from a study performed by Bousefield (1953). All these claim that organization in categories is the natural way to process information in long term memory involving Cognitive Processes as memory call propellers. Modeled after Bousefield’s study, the aim of this study is to examine the effects of words’ organization on the ability of recalling from memory, when they are stored. It is supposed to give a learning …

The Limits Of Resistant Reading In Critical Literacy Practices, Cori Ann Mckenzie, Scott Jarvie
The Limits Of Resistant Reading In Critical Literacy Practices, Cori Ann Mckenzie, Scott Jarvie
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Purpose
This paper aims to draw from work in the field of English that questions the “limits of critique” (Felski, 2015) in order to consider the limits of critical literacy approaches to literature instruction. The study focuses on the relational and affective demands that resistant reading places on readers and texts.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing from post-critical (Felski, 2015) and surface (Best and Marcus, 2009) reading practices in the field of English, the authors perform analyses of two recent articles that illustrate critical literacy approaches to literature instruction, drawing attention to the ways the resistant reading practices outlined in each article reflect …

Optic Flow Improves Step Width And Length In Older Adults While Performing Dual Task, Taylor Leeder, Farah Fallahtafti, Molly Schieber, Sara A. Myers, Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Jennifer M. Yentes
Journal Articles
Background
Dual-task paradigms are used to investigate gait and cognitive declines in older adults (OA). Optic-flow is a virtual reality environment where the scene flows past the subject while walking on a treadmill, mimicking real-life locomotion.
Aims
To investigate cost of environment (no optic-flow v. optic-flow) while completing single- and dual-task walking and dual-task costs (DTC; single- v. dual-task) in optic-flow and no optic-flow environments.
Methods
Twenty OA and seven younger adults (YA) walked on a self-paced treadmill in 3-min segments per task and both environments. Five task conditions included: no task, semantic fluency (category), phonemic fluency (letters), word reading, …

The Shift Toward Open Research: A Discussion About Drivers, Recent Developments, And The Future Of Scholarship, Nick Shockey
Open Access Day
The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. The momentum behind open research is building; however, what the end result looks like is still very much an open question. This talk will explore the drivers of this shift toward open research, …

A Pokébalancing Act: The Management Of Japanese Cultural “Odor ” In Pokémon, Nicholas Raes
A Pokébalancing Act: The Management Of Japanese Cultural “Odor ” In Pokémon, Nicholas Raes
Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I analyzed two seasons of the Pokémon anime to discover patterns of cultural “odor” management employed by the show’s producers and editors. In the first season of Pokémon, the producers of the anime included many symbolic representations of Japanese cultural artifacts within the visual features of the show. However, between the Japanese and US versions of the season, most instances of Japanese linguistic text were either “scrubbed” from scenes entirely or replaced with English text. These techniques struck a careful balance between including and excluding Japanese specificity within the first season, subtly expressing to non-Japanese audiences the …
