The Impact Of Stuttering On Development Of Self-Identity, Relationships, And Quality Of Life In Women Who Stutter, Charn Nang, Deborah J. Hersh, Katie Milton, Su Re Lau

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Purpose: The experiences of women who stutter have been underresearched. Clinicians have little guidance from the research literature on issues specific to women who stutter and are likely to have less clinical contact with this group than with men who stutter because of the higher prevalence of stuttering in men. This study explored the experiences of a small group of women who stutter with a particular focus on what the main current issues are and how gender may have influenced experiences with stuttering.

Method: This qualitative study involved recruitment of 9 women who stutter (aged 35-80 years) through a support …

Construction Of Fuzzy Risk Assessment Models., T.F Bekmuratov, B.T Solieva Oct 2018

Construction Of Fuzzy Risk Assessment Models., T.F Bekmuratov, B.T Solieva

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The tasks of making decisions on risk assessment, depending on the conditions of uncertainty, are divided into two types: decision-making tasks under conditions where the initial data are stochastic; decision-making tasks under conditions when the initial data are of a non-stochastic nature, and the necessary confidence limits for the parameters of the processes under investigation are unknown or unclear. In problems of the second type, risks are manifested to a greater extent than the first, since in solving problems it is necessary to take into account not only statistical uncertainty, but also linguistic. At the same time, one should consider …

Effective Methods And Tools For Mining App Store Reviews, Nishant Jha Oct 2018

Effective Methods And Tools For Mining App Store Reviews, Nishant Jha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research on mining user reviews in mobile application (app) stores has noticeably advanced in the past few years. The main objective is to extract useful information that app developers can use to build more sustainable apps. In general, existing research on app store mining can be classified into three genres: classification of user feedback into different types of software maintenance requests (e.g., bug reports and feature requests), building practical tools that are readily available for developers to use, and proposing visions for enhanced mobile app stores that integrate multiple sources of user feedback to ensure app survivability. Despite these major …

(In)Visible Men On Campus: Campus Racial Climate And Subversive Black Masculinities At A Predominantly White Liberal Arts University, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

There is an emerging body of literature examining the academic success of Black men attending predominantly White colleges and universities, though less is known about Black college men’s experiences at liberal arts institutions. In this paper, I draw upon semi-structured and photovoice interview data from a study on Black male college students attending a predominantly White liberal arts institution in the USA. Specifically, I will present narrative and visual data of how Black college men perceive the campus racial climate and make sense of their (in)visibility at the university. Drawing upon poststructuralist theories of gender and critical race theory, I …

'Whatsoever A Man Soweth:' Sex Education About Venereal Disease, Racial Health, And Social Hygiene During The First World War, Brent Brenyo

Canadian Military History

In 1917, the British War Office released a film directed by Joseph Best titled Whatsoever a Man Soweth. The 38-minute silent film used intertitles to convey dialogue, and the film’s narrative, which focuses on three Canadian soldiers on leave in London, England, was intended to provide sex education for soldiers. This paper examines how the film reflected and constructed a wartime reality through cultural representations, as increased attention was paid to the threat of venereal disease and its impact on racial health and the British Empire during the First World War. Ultimately, this sex education film provided soldiers with …

Instructional Supports: Facilitating Or Constraining Emergent Bilinguals’ Production Of Oral Explanations?, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica

Teacher Education

This qualitative study examined how specific instructional supports intended to scaffold emergent bilinguals’ oral production of explanations facilitated or constrained students’ attempts to explain. Findings demonstrate that explanations were very rarely produced, and when they were produced, the explanations were not particularly informative. Furthermore, the teachers’ attempts to support emergent bilingual talk via sentence starters, guiding questions, and rephrasing questions inadvertently undermined the students’ attempts to explain.

In the third Part, I will describe neo-liberal, reformist, and neo-fundamentalist approaches to interpretation of Islamic law, and I will then draw out pieces of the decisions from the three cases that closely match these …

The Demands Of The Rights Of The Learner, Elham Kazemi Oct 2018

The Demands Of The Rights Of The Learner, Elham Kazemi

Democracy & Education

In this response to Kalenic-Craig’s (2017) article, “The Rights of the Learner: A Framework For Promoting Equity through Dynamic Formative Assessment,” I consider what implications the RotL framework has for the work that teachers and students must do in learning environments where these rights flourish. The RoTL emphasizes student sensemaking and communication in the classroom. Given the realities of classrooms as racialized, gendered, and classed spaces, this emphasis on communication demands critical consciousness for both teachers and students.

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and may God’s prayers be upon our Master Muhammad and his pure and immaculate family: The research deals with a brief explanation of the concept of repetition among linguists, textualists, and critics, and sheds light on its function in drawing the listener’s attention to the importance of repeated speech, and the purposes for which speech is repeated. The research also shows the importance of repetition in achieving coherence and connection between parts of speech. Then the research goes on to explain the types of repetition that textualists have divided into four sections: …

Communicative Function And Intertextuality In Hamed Al Rawi’S Poetry, Lama Abdel Qader Khanyab, Adnan Hussein Madloul

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The communicative function in the poetic text is not limited to the deliberative dimension, but also includes the cultural and the seminal dimension. Its basic elements, such as context, intentionality, acceptability and tolerance, carry semantic and interpretive indicators as well as deliberative indicators if the semantic structure interacts with the communication function in the production of the discourse, especially the interaction between the indicative evidence and the verb On the one hand, and between objectivity and objectivity or objective structure on the other. The communicative function of the text provides the integrated perspective - linguistic / communicative / cognitive - …
