#Hashtags: A Look At The Evaluative Roles Of Hashtags On Twitter, Leah Rose Schaede

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Social media has become a large part of today’s pop culture and keeping up with what is going on not only in our social circles, but around the world. It has given many a platform to unite their causes, build fandoms, and share their commentary with the world. A tool in helping group posts together or give commentary on a thought is the hashtag. In this paper I explore the evaluative roles of hashtags in social media discourse, specifically on Twitter. I use a sample of randomly selected tweets from the Twitter API stream I collected and compiled myself. I …

Pragmatic Functionality Of Punctuation On Twitter, Elizabeth M. Wright Jan 2018

Pragmatic Functionality Of Punctuation On Twitter, Elizabeth M. Wright

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This work presents an analysis of punctuation use in computer-mediated communication (CMC); in particular, the present study aims to describe the pragmatic functions of nonstandard punctuation on Twitter, providing a corpus-driven overview of the distribution and frequency of nonstandard punctuation use, and an analysis of sampled tweets at the individual tweet level to estimate noise levels in the overall corpus. A survey was also conducted which aimed to identify user understanding of the affective content of nonstandard punctuation strings and to identify any possible effects of character repetition. Survey results indicate that linguistic content was the strongest indicator of affective …

Itexts: Techxtual Poetics, Authorship And Re-Wreaders In 21St-Century Spanish Literature, Joshua M. Hoekstra

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

In 2007, Nuria Azancot published an article in the magazine El Cultural in which she identified a burgeoning group of Spanish writers that she referred to as the “Nocilla Generation.” The catalyst behind the article was a literary reunion that took place weeks before in Seville and brought together authors from all parts of Spain to talk about the status and future of writing. She described them as “transgressors” and “bloggers” who hybridized literary genres and held a revolutionary approach to the literary that was clearly marked by the Internet. Numerous articles and dissertations have since highlighted the impact that …

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Theories Of Noblesse Oblige In Carolingian Francia, Megan R. Perry Jan 2018

All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Theories Of Noblesse Oblige In Carolingian Francia, Megan R. Perry

Theses and Dissertations--History

This thesis argues that conceptions of commerce in the Carolingian era were intertwined with the discourse of ethics, and that concepts of the Carolingian ‘economy’ may be profitably illuminated by consideration of pre-modern ethical and social categories. I explore a pre-modern pattern of personhood that framed persons in terms of political rôles, and exchange in terms of the interactions of those rôles. In moral letters addressed to counts and kings, ethical counsel about greed for each lay rôle was grounded in particular geographic spaces and historical moments, creating a rich valence of specific meanings for greed and charity. I examine …

“Listening With An Attitude”: The Role Of Attitude On Native And Non-Native Intergroup Communication, Aidah N. Aljuran Jan 2018

“Listening With An Attitude”: The Role Of Attitude On Native And Non-Native Intergroup Communication, Aidah N. Aljuran

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

People tend to draw their own conclusions about similarities and differences between who they are and the “other.” Having perceptions of being similar to the in-group and being different from the out-group “satisfies psychological needs” (Robbins & Krueger, 2005). Based on this social perception, individuals show communication variations as a way of expressing their identities (Giles 1973). This study implements quantitative and qualitative methods in order to examine the attitude of native speakers (NSs), as well as the potential impact of these attitudes on their communication with non-native speakers (NNSs). The potential impact of NSs’ interactions on NNSs’ interactions was …

Regression Analysis Of Factors Impacting Problem Solving Engagement Within Lean Systems Implementation, David M. Parsley Ii Jan 2018

Regression Analysis Of Factors Impacting Problem Solving Engagement Within Lean Systems Implementation, David M. Parsley Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Organizations around the world have attempted to implement the concepts of the Toyota Production System (TPS), commonly referred to as Lean, with limited sustainable success. The central principles of TPS, continuous improvement and respect for people, are grounded in the Japanese values of Monozukuri and Hitozukuri. Monozukuri deals with creating or making a product, while Hitozukuri conveys the idea of developing people through learning. In order for organizations to adopt these values they must have a system that engages employees at all levels in applying problem solving to improve their work. This research uses organizational assessments obtained from a variety …

Parent-Implemented Language Intervention With Young Children From Low-Ses Environments Who Have Language Impairment, Courtney Allison Hatcher

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

In this study, the author examined the effects of training four parents from low-socioeconomic environments to use Enhanced Milieu Teaching (EMT) with their young children with language impairment. The investigator used a modified Teach-Model-Coach-Review method to teach parents to use the following EMT strategies during 8-10 individualized, home-based sessions: matched turns, expansions, time delays and milieu teaching prompts. A single-case multiple-baseline design across-behaviors replicated across four parent/child dyads was used to evaluate the parents' use of the EMT strategies. Child language outcomes were also assessed using pre- and post-intervention language samples. All parents learned and demonstrated use of each language …

Gendering Patriotism: Wartime Culture And Propaganda In Wwi, Emily Elizabeth Haynes Jan 2018

Gendering Patriotism: Wartime Culture And Propaganda In Wwi, Emily Elizabeth Haynes

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

The cover of a popular 1918 American song, "Keep the Home Together, Mother, Thaf s All We're Fighting For/' suggested that the main goal of World War I was to protect and sustain the home.1 It depicted three women from all different generations sitting at a kitchen table. One is reading and two are working on a sewing project. A small black cat meanders nearby this domestic scene. This image placed an emphasis on gendered spatialization-women are at home performing traditional women's work, such as sewing and maintaining the home, while men are outside performing men's work, such as fighting …

Analysis Of Driver Behavior Modeling In Connected Vehicle Safety Systems Through High Fidelity Simulation, Ahura Jami Jan 2018

Analysis Of Driver Behavior Modeling In Connected Vehicle Safety Systems Through High Fidelity Simulation, Ahura Jami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A critical aspect of connected vehicle safety analysis is understanding the impact of human behavior on the overall performance of the safety system. Given the variation in human driving behavior and the expectancy for high levels of performance, it is crucial for these systems to be flexible to various driving characteristics. However, design, testing, and evaluation of these active safety systems remain a challenging task, exacerbated by the lack of behavioral data and practical test platforms. Additionally, the need for the operation of these systems in critical and dangerous situations makes the burden of their evaluation very costly and time-consuming. …

Applied Software Tools For Supporting Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Ahmad Abualsamid Jan 2018

Applied Software Tools For Supporting Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Ahmad Abualsamid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We explored the level of technology utilization in supporting children with cognitive disabilities at schools, speech clinics, and with assistive communication at home. Anecdotal evidence, literature research, and our own survey of special needs educators in Central Florida reveal that use of technology is minimal in classrooms for students with special needs even when scientific research has shown the effectiveness of video modeling in teaching children with special needs new skills and behaviors. Research also shows that speech and language therapists utilize a manual approach to elicit and analyze language samples from children with special needs. While technology is utilized …

Silent Cities: Sensationalism And Removed Populations Within Fourteenth Century Western Christian And Muslim Travel Accounts Of Baghdad And Jerusalem, Abby Gibbons Jan 2018

Silent Cities: Sensationalism And Removed Populations Within Fourteenth Century Western Christian And Muslim Travel Accounts Of Baghdad And Jerusalem, Abby Gibbons

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the removal of surrounding populations within fourteenth century travel literature in the cities of Baghdad and Jerusalem, I analyze two Christian travelers, Marco Polo and John Mandeville, and one Muslim traveler, Ibn Battuta. As a basis of comparison, I discuss the twelfth century Muslim traveler, Ibn Jubayr. I specifically analyze Baghdad and Jerusalem due to the fact that they represent cities of centrality for Muslims and Christians, respectively, within medieval geographic understanding. I argue that fourteenth century travel literature presents a paradigm based in sensationalism and population removal due to their focus on entertainment and wonder, rather …

The Impact Of Technology Innovations In High School Biology Courses On Science Learning For Hmong Students, Thai Xiong Jan 2018

The Impact Of Technology Innovations In High School Biology Courses On Science Learning For Hmong Students, Thai Xiong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hmong high school students struggle in science courses and have difficulty using technology, leaving them behind other ethnic groups in science performance. There is lack of research regarding Hmong students' struggle in technology-focused science courses, especially regarding the experiences of Hmong students with using science technology and teachers' experiences with these students. This single case study was designed to explore how technology innovations in high school biology courses impact science learning for Hmong students based on Gu, Zhu, and Guo's technology acceptance model. Both Hmong student and science teacher interviews as well as reflective journal data were collected to better …

Implementation Of A Standardized Approach To Diabetes Education, Stacey Williams Porter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that Type 2 diabetes

mellitus (T2DM) is a serious health issue affecting over 24 million Americans. Adults with T2DM are 2 to 4 times more likely to experience complications of the disease such as heart disease and stroke. Efforts are needed to control the condition and prevent the complications. At a local community hospital in the southeast United States, a 2-year assessment revealed over 10,000 patients admitted with diabetes or diabetes-related complications. Staff nurses at the site were responsible for diabetes self-management education for T2DM patients at discharge; however, no standardized …

Teacher Perspective On Differentiation For Gifted Students In The General Education Classroom, Karen Arnold Kilgore Jan 2018

Teacher Perspective On Differentiation For Gifted Students In The General Education Classroom, Karen Arnold Kilgore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Gifted middle school students may not always be provided with a differentiated curriculum that ensures their academic progression in inclusive educational settings. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine teachers' perspectives on differentiation for gifted students in the general education classroom. The conceptual framework for the study was anchored by the theories of Gardner, who recognized that students learn in different ways, and Vygotsky, who determined that students learn best at their level of learning or zone of proximal development. The research questions focused on teachers' perspectives about teaching the gifted students in the general classroom environment …

Confronting Heteronormative Standards Of The Nuclear Family: A Narrative Analysis Of Transgender Dads Pregnancy And Birth Experiences, Annie Rosenblum Jan 2018

Confronting Heteronormative Standards Of The Nuclear Family: A Narrative Analysis Of Transgender Dads Pregnancy And Birth Experiences, Annie Rosenblum

Theses & ETDs

In our society, we most commonly associate pregnancy and birth with the bodies and experiences of cisgender, straight women. This thesis seeks to center the underrepresented pregnancy and birth stories of transgender dads through a narrative analysis of their experiences, as told by them in media. Their stories are sourced from three pieces of media created by and for transgender parents (and those wanting to learn more about them): Labor of Love (2008), a memoir, The Accidental Gay Parents (2015-2017), a podcast, and Transgender Parents (2014), a documentary. I will broadly explore how gender determines reproductive choices, and more specifically …

Implicit Racial Biases In Prosecutorial Summations: Proposing An Integrated Response, Praatika Prasad Jan 2018

Implicit Racial Biases In Prosecutorial Summations: Proposing An Integrated Response, Praatika Prasad

Fordham Law Review

Racial bias has evolved from the explicit racism of the Jim Crow era to amore subtle and difficult-to-detect form: implicit racial bias. Implicit racial biases exist unconsciously and include negative racial stereotypes andassociations. Everyone, including actors in the criminal justice system who believe themselves to be fair, possess these biases. Although inaccessible through introspection, implicit biases can easily be triggered through language. When trials involve Black defendants, prosecutors’ summations increasingly include racial themes that could trigger jurors’ implicit biases, lead to the perpetuation of unfair stereotypes, and contribute to racial injustice and disparate outcomes. This Note examines and critiques the …

African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Sovent Zantrell Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Underrepresented student populations are faced with numerous barriers and are often overlooked on many college campuses. The aim of this research was to better understand academic cohorts and if they help reduce some of the barriers faced by African American and first-generation students which can ultimately affect retention and persistence to graduation. In order to gather this information, interviews and surveys were conducted with students once enrolled in the foundations for academic success track (Fastrack) program at the University of Mississippi. Results from the interviews and surveys indicate that while the Fastrack program seemed to support successful social transitions for …

The Supreme Court’S Original Jurisdiction Over Disputes Between The United States And A State, Lochlan F. Shelfer Jan 2018

The Supreme Court’S Original Jurisdiction Over Disputes Between The United States And A State, Lochlan F. Shelfer

Buffalo Law Review

Does the Supreme Court have jurisdiction to hear controversies between a state and the United States? Although the Supreme Court has asserted this power, commentators have puzzled over the question for decades. Because Article III does not enumerate controversies between a state and the United States, many scholars have concluded that the Court’s exercise of this power is illegitimate, or at least atextual. This Article argues that the Constitution’s text does give the Supreme Court the power to hear such controversies, but to understand why it is necessary to understand the way that the framers would, for the sake of …

A Recurrent Neural Network Architecture For Biomedical Event Trigger Classification, Jeevith Bopaiah Jan 2018

A Recurrent Neural Network Architecture For Biomedical Event Trigger Classification, Jeevith Bopaiah

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

A “biomedical event” is a broad term used to describe the roles and interactions between entities (such as proteins, genes and cells) in a biological system. The task of biomedical event extraction aims at identifying and extracting these events from unstructured texts. An important component in the early stage of the task is biomedical trigger classification which involves identifying and classifying words/phrases that indicate an event. In this thesis, we present our work on biomedical trigger classification developed using the multi-level event extraction dataset. We restrict the scope of our classification to 19 biomedical event types grouped under four broad …

The Experience Of A Brazilian Graduate Student In The United States In Disciplinary Writing: The Cognitive, Social, And Rhetorical Influences On A Thesis Introduction, Gilberto Pereira Jan 2018

The Experience Of A Brazilian Graduate Student In The United States In Disciplinary Writing: The Cognitive, Social, And Rhetorical Influences On A Thesis Introduction, Gilberto Pereira

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Eighty percent of the international students in the US are pursuing their post-graduate degrees (Institute of International Education, 2017) and studies show that the introduction of the thesis or dissertation is the most challenging section for this population to compose. However, most of these studies are based on textual analysis and overlooks the social factor and cognitive processes underlying the composition of this intricate section. Another gap in the literature is the lack of attention to how Latin-Americans develop their writing in master’s programs, especially to Brazilian students, the ninth largest international student population in the US. Therefore, this study …
