Mental Health And Drivers Of Need In Emergent And Non-Emergent Emergency Department (Ed) Use: Do Living Location And Non-Emergent Care Sources Matter?, Moira C. Mcmanus, Robert J. Cramer, Maureen Boshier, Muge Akpinar-Elci, Bonnie Van Lunen

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Emergency department (ED) utilization has increased due to factors such as admissions for mental health conditions, including suicide and self-harm. We investigate direct and moderating influences on non-emergent ED utilization through the Behavioral Model of Health Services Use. Through logistic regression, we examined correlates of ED use via 2014 New York State Department of Health Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System outpatient data. Consistent with the primary hypothesis, mental health admissions were associated with emergent use across models, with only a slight decrease in effect size in rural living locations. Concerning moderating effects, Spanish/Hispanic origin was associated with increased likelihood …

Perspectives On Truth: The Case Of Language And False Belief Reasoning, Jill De Villiers Jan 2018

Perspectives On Truth: The Case Of Language And False Belief Reasoning, Jill De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Many theorists take language – vocabulary, mental verbs, syntax, counterfactuals, discourse – to be a significant help in the development of explicit Theory of Mind. Does conversation, with all its point-of-view indicators, betray another’s perspective? By comparing how different linguistic markers behave across clausal environments, I demonstrate that they fall into distinct classes, only one of which – tense – patterns with the truth of the clause in terms of perspective. Sentences with embedded finite complements thus have a special role in representing the truth or falsity of others’ beliefs. Children who master embedded sentential complements can then more readily …

An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Hypnotherapeutic Experience, Jimena Castro Jan 2018

An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Hypnotherapeutic Experience, Jimena Castro

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Family therapy researchers have conducted a variety of studies of brief approaches to family therapy (e.g., MRI, Solution Focused, Strategic). However, despite the fact that Milton Erickson’s approach to hypnosis and psychotherapy was a significant influence on these models, few family therapy researchers have studied Ericksonian hypnosis directly. Hypnosis is a way of communicating with the body to elicit psychological and physiological responses that are not organized by conscious awareness (Erickson, 1980i). Hypnosis becomes hypnotherapy when the context and the participants are oriented toward therapeutic change (Flemons, 2002). Employing the methodology of autoethnography (Ellis & Bochner, 2016) and using Interpersonal …

The Glass Ceiling: Female Artists' Gallery Representation In The New Millennium And A History Of Imbalance, Caroline Currier Jan 2018

The Glass Ceiling: Female Artists' Gallery Representation In The New Millennium And A History Of Imbalance, Caroline Currier

MA Theses

The concept of the “glass ceiling” means that an acknowledged barrier to advancement in a profession exists. This paper discusses the state of gender inequality in contemporary New York galleries today, and how they have changed over the past 10 years as well as contextually, throughout history. Often, gender inequality in the art world is made visible by the lacking number of female artist museum shows or through comparing auction prices. Statistics regarding gallery representation is less common, in part due to the fact that artist representation is a fluid process and it is difficult to track these figures over …

Constructing Two Phonological Systems: A Phonetic Analysis Of /P/, /T/, /K/ Among Early Spanish–English Bilingual Speakers, Earl K. Brown, Mary T. Copple Jan 2018

Constructing Two Phonological Systems: A Phonetic Analysis Of /P/, /T/, /K/ Among Early Spanish–English Bilingual Speakers, Earl K. Brown, Mary T. Copple

Faculty Publications

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: Many early Spanish-English bilingual speakers in the USA learn Spanish as their first language at home and English in school. This paper seeks to elucidate whether these speakers develop a separate phonological system for English and, if so, the role of primary and secondary cues in the development of the second language (L2) system.

Design/methodology/approach: The phonetic realization of the voiceless stops /p/, /t/, /k/ is analyzed among three groups: early Spanish-English bilinguals; L1 English speakers who are late learners of Spanish; and L1 Spanish speakers who are late learners of English. The participants (N = …

Conceptualizations Of Catalogers’ Judgment Through Content Analysis: A Preliminary Investigation, Junli Diao

Publications and Research

Catalogers’ judgment is frequently mentioned, but rarely researched in formal studies. The purpose of this article is to investigate catalogers’ judgment through an exploration of the texts collected in the database of Library and Information Science Source. Verbs, adjectives and nouns intimately associated with catalogers’ judgment were extracted, analyzed and grouped into 16 categories, which give birth to five conceptual descriptions. The results of this study provide cataloging professionals with an overview picture on aspects of catalogers’ judgment. They may help library school students and graduates and novice catalogers to become independent and confident decision makers relating to cataloging work.

The Nationalism Debate, Concerns, And Constitutional Response, Sidharth Luthra, Nivedita Mukhija Jan 2018

The Nationalism Debate, Concerns, And Constitutional Response, Sidharth Luthra, Nivedita Mukhija

National Law School of India Review

Today, we find ourselves in a situation where identity has returned as a political force and there is a rejection of multicultural values. There is a raging debate on what nationalism implies and means to its citizens. There are groups that advocate a relook at history, culture, and education. They believe that India should be defined not in western liberal terms, but in what are termed as ancient civilizational values. However, the Indian brand of nationalism must be based on Constitutional nationalism. This form of nationalism is distinct as it demands a citizen's allegiance not to any religion or school …

Using Blended Learning To Enhance The Experience Of Students In Built Environment Related Degree Programs, Ruari Hayden, Philip Russell Jan 2018

Using Blended Learning To Enhance The Experience Of Students In Built Environment Related Degree Programs, Ruari Hayden, Philip Russell

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

Blended learning was introduced into the Construction Management programme in the School of Surveying and Construction Management at the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2016. The module has traditionally been delivered by face-to-face teaching but online delivery has been facilitated using the Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) which has enabled a more blended approach to academic instruction. This innovative change to module provision has also provided an opportunity to enhance the student learning experience within the School through a more flexible teaching and learning environment.

In this paper, the design, development and implementation of blended learning into a Construction Technology module …

Facebook: Changing The Face Of Communication Research, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2018

Facebook: Changing The Face Of Communication Research, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

The ubiquitous social networking site, Facebook, registered over one billion active users in 2012 and continues to grow (Facebook, 2018a). Not surprisingly, communication researchers around the world noticed this phenomenal shift in communication practice, a practice aided by a combination of digital communication tools—easy to access communication networks, low cost bandwidth, smartphones, application features, and so on. These developments transformed the understanding of “social networks,” turning them from face-to-face interactions among small groups into world spanning digital connections, from networks of business or professional associations supported by analogue or “old” communication practices (such as letter writing, telephone calls, or conference …

(Some) Mothers Know Best: A Case Comment On Mm V Tb And The Plight Of Indigenous Mothers In Child Welfare And Adoption Proceedings, Catherine Wang Jan 2018

(Some) Mothers Know Best: A Case Comment On Mm V Tb And The Plight Of Indigenous Mothers In Child Welfare And Adoption Proceedings, Catherine Wang

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Over time, courts have come to acknowledge the significance of Indigenous identity when deciding custody disputes, but they continue to struggle with how much consideration should be given to the broader history involved, which can leave Indigenous mothers particularly disadvantaged in family law proceedings. Not only do Indigenous mothers have to contend with the law’s general assumptions and expectations about mothers, they also have to endure the courts’ often limited ability to situate mothers’ individual actions in the wider context of structural barriers erected by government and societal forces. A close examination of the recent British Columbia Court of Appeal …

A Sociophonetic Study Of /S/ Weakening In Andalusian Spanish, Elisa Taylor Jan 2018

A Sociophonetic Study Of /S/ Weakening In Andalusian Spanish, Elisa Taylor

Scripps Senior Theses

The phenomenon of /s/ weakening is common among many varieties of Spanish, from Latin America to southern Spain (Lipski (2011), Samper Padilla (2011)). This project will focus specifically on coda /s/ weakening in Andalusian Spanish, the social factors that influence it, and the language ideologies surrounding the dialect. Previous research has found that social factors influencing /s/ weakening include social class, gender, and education level (Lipski (2011), Samper Padilla (2011), Holmquist (2008), Terrell (1981), Fontanella de Weinberg (1973)). Studies on /s/ weakening in Andalusian Spanish have mainly focused on the functional compensation for the loss of /s/, but little research …

Semiotik Riffaterre Dalam Pantun Kanak-Kanak / Aida Qamariah Ishak, Ishak Aida Qamariah

Student Works (2010-2019)

Children Pantun (CP) is one type of Malay ‘pantun’. CP is created with simple meanings and pattern, inline with children’s age, level of cognitive development, maturity and their nature who like a simple and rhyme language. Meanings in CP can be summarised into proverbs, similes and short and brief sayings, with vast and profound meaning. Regardless of how ‘pantun’ is created, it remains as an artistic symbol of Malay culture and wisdom. CP with ambiguous meanings prevents readers particularly children to comprehend the predetermined meaning. In reality, not all the children can grasp the meaning of ‘pantun’ dexterously, especially to …

Writing Center Tutor Training: An Examination Of Emphasis On Critical Pedagogy In Tutor Training Handbooks, Thomas B. King Jan 2018

Writing Center Tutor Training: An Examination Of Emphasis On Critical Pedagogy In Tutor Training Handbooks, Thomas B. King

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Writing center theory has not always emphasized critical pedagogy as part of writing center pedagogy. However, with scholars’ applications of critical lenses such as postmodernism and postcolonialism to critique writing center practice, critical pedagogy has found its way into writing center practices. Self-critical awareness is one key element of critical pedagogy, and through the dialogic application of critical pedagogy in writing center sessions, students can be made aware of the hegemonic nature of academic discourse and why institution and discipline-valued writing is expected over other kinds of writing. Because critical pedagogy has value in writing center contexts, both for the …

Framings Of Nature In Planet Earth Ii And Wild Safari Live, Joshua Gross Jan 2018

Framings Of Nature In Planet Earth Ii And Wild Safari Live, Joshua Gross

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The percentage of the world’s population living in cities continues to grow, while media technologies become ever more ubiquitous. As a result, the mass media’s role in connecting the general public to the natural world will only increase; the wildlife genre of television may have a particularly large role to play in this regard. Unfortunately, previous authors have argued that the over-dramatized depictions of nature in mainstream wildlife programs may serve to disconnect viewers from the natural world. Scholarship has also not kept up with recent developments in wildlife television, with few authors writing about hugely successful programs like Planet …

Name As Key-Word, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2018

Name As Key-Word, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter Foundation Books

During his famous conversation with Kuki Shūzō, German philosopher Martin Heidegger playfully2 connected the name of Hermes, the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, to the etymology of “hermeneutics,” the formal study of interpretation. In contrast to ancient oracles who acted as simple mouthpieces, announcing divine words verbatim, Hermes took upon himself the additional role of interpreter, commenting on the meaning of the messages in ways that would allow perceptive hearers to act productively.3 Continuing Heidegger’s wordplay,4 Hans-Georg Gadamer elaborated the thinking of his mentor about the role of Hermes:5

Comparing Book Of Mormon Names With Those Found In J.R.R. Tolkien’S Works: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Bruce L. Brown, Sharon Black Jan 2018

Comparing Book Of Mormon Names With Those Found In J.R.R. Tolkien’S Works: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Bruce L. Brown, Sharon Black

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The works of Tolkien and the Book of Mormon have been compared in a variety of ways by multiple authors and researchers, but none have looked specifically at the unusual names found within both. Wordprint studies are one tool used in author attribution research, but do authors use specific sounds more than others — consciously or subconsciously — when selecting or inventing names? Some research suggests they may and that their patterns could create a “sound print” or phonoprint. This constitutes a fresh and unusual path of research that deserves more attention. The purpose of this exploratory study was to …

The Language Of The Original Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen Jan 2018

The Language Of The Original Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

BYU Studies

When I began the Book of Mormon Critical Text Project in 1988, my initial goal was to determine the reading of the manuscripts of the Book of Mormon. There are two manuscripts: (1) the original manuscript (referred to as O), the manuscript the scribes wrote down as Joseph Smith dictated the text (the majority of the dictation was done in 1829); and (2) the printer’s manuscript (referred to as P), the copy of O that the scribes produced from August 1829 through January 1830 and took into the Grandin print shop in Palmyra, New York, for typesetting the first edition …

Evaluation In Moderation: Evaluative Adjectives In Student Academic Presentations, Alla Zareva Jan 2018

Evaluation In Moderation: Evaluative Adjectives In Student Academic Presentations, Alla Zareva

English Faculty Publications

Evaluation is inherent in academic discourse and fundamental to shaping college students’ critical thinking and ability to assess the status of discipline-specific information. The current study focused on the use of evaluative adjectives in native English speaking (L1) and English as a second language (L2) college student academic presentations (N = 40). The goal was to find out how the two groups of presenters compared on their frequency, referential choices, variability of evaluative adjectives, patterns of adjectival structures, and level of sophistication of the adjectives they used and also to identify common trends for both groups along the categories. The …

“A Promise To Support Us:” Undocumented Experiences On A Sanctuary Campus, Elaine Allard, Jonathan Hamel Sellman , '19, Brandon Torres , '18, Sydnie Schwarz , '20, Freddy Bernardino , '18, Rebecca Castillo , '20

Educational Studies Faculty Works

This exploratory study examines the experiences of undocumented students at Hawthorne College, an elite, liberal arts institution with sanctuary status. Drawing primarily on a questionnaire and qualitative interviews, it considers 1) whether undocumented and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students on a sanctuary campus experience the characteristic psychosocial difficulties that mark the lives of undocumented students elsewhere and 2) the extent to which institutional policies mitigate these challenges. The research reveals that sanctuary is neither a panacea for undocumented students’ concerns nor is it a meaningless symbol. Students are protected from some typical barriers to college success, experience other …

The Effects Of Verbal And Nonverbal Communication On Relationship Satisfaction In Thai-German Couples, Martina Beg

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study aims to explore the ways in which Thai-German couples perceive their mutual verbal and nonverbal communication as causing them dissatisfaction in their daily lives. Furthermore, it investigates the extent to which the partners' mutual communication satisfaction is correlated to the general satisfaction with their relationship. A mixed-methods approach was used for data collection. The data were collected from 544 questionnaire respondents and 11 interviewees. Data analysis employed statistical analyses for quantitative data (2 sets of questionnaires), and text analysis for the individual in-depth interview. The survey results indicated a strong positive correlation between communication satisfaction and relationship satisfaction: …

Conceptual Blending Analysis Of Diangu (典故 Classic Allusions) As Metaphor In A Dream Of Red Mansions, Han Jianghua Jan 2018

Conceptual Blending Analysis Of Diangu (典故 Classic Allusions) As Metaphor In A Dream Of Red Mansions, Han Jianghua

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper studies the use of Diangu (典故) in Chinese poetry. Diangu (典故) refers to ancient events or stories quoted in poems and words with literary origins (Modern Chinese Dictionary 2012: 290). However, the Western allusion refers to an implicit reference, perhaps to another work of literature or art or to a person or an event; it is often a kind of appeal for a reader to share some experience with the writer; an allusion may enrich the work by association (q.v.) and give it depth (Cuddon 2013: 25). Thus, the concepts of "Diangu (典故)" and "allusion" do not correspond …
