Breaking The Crass Ceiling? Exploring Narratives, Performances, And Audience Reception Of Women's Stand-Up Comedy, Sarah Katherine Cooper
Breaking The Crass Ceiling? Exploring Narratives, Performances, And Audience Reception Of Women's Stand-Up Comedy, Sarah Katherine Cooper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the long history of stand-up comedy as a distinct form of popular entertainment, there has been little sociological attention given to its cultural significance. Comedians have arguably become legitimate and visible voices in many public conversations about social issues and social justice. This dissertation explores the cultural work of women’s comedy in popular culture. Specifically, I examine narrative representation and audience reception of women’s stand-up comedy through multi-method qualitative inquiry.
First, I analyze stand-up performances by popular U.S. comedians Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Margaret Cho. Through narrative analysis, I focus on the ironic performativity of Schumer and the …
Sentence Stems That Support Reading Comprehension, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Allison Briceño
Sentence Stems That Support Reading Comprehension, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Allison Briceño
Teacher Education
Sentence stems are widely used by teachers, but what do we know about developing sentence stems and using them effectively? Sentence stems are intended to facilitate students’ participation in academic conversations and writing and support students to develop the language expected in school, but sometimes the stems do not provide the support intended. The authors explain how to develop supportive sentence stems.
Symmetries In The Semiosphere: A Typology, Leone Massimo
Symmetries In The Semiosphere: A Typology, Leone Massimo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The article points out that the current expansion of the semiotic focus from signs and texts to whole cultures needs the development of a coherent method. It therefore proposes to establish the method through an application of the topological theory of fractals to the analysis of different kinds of symmetries in the semiosphere. Having defined fractals as resemblance between two topological structures, the article first dwells on what "resemblance" means in the comparison of both visual and conceptual patterns; it then proposes a typology of fractal similarities, based on the topological operations of rotation, translation, and reflection. Examples of each …
The Affect Theory Of Tao With "Wuhua" From An Animal Perspective, Suqin Hu
The Affect Theory Of Tao With "Wuhua" From An Animal Perspective, Suqin Hu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article explores the affective, bodily and linguistic aspects of Tao's lyricism in the pre-Qin period from the perspective of human-animal relationship. Based on the human-animal affective bonds in wuhua, this article first proposes that the animal effects emotional changes in human beings in the light of Deleuze and Guattari's "becoming-animal" and the affect theory, which can also be firmly demonstrated by the "qi" and "qi-qing" cosmology in the Pre-Qin period. Then it argues that the human-animal bond of "wuhua" is embodied and performative, thus forming affective auras between the bodies. Viewed linguistically, the special position of the animal at …
Words As Signatures: Agamben And The End Of Poetry, Jiang Lan
Words As Signatures: Agamben And The End Of Poetry, Jiang Lan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Agamben's works, there is a tension between the mysterious fire and the narrative language. The language, which derives from the doxologies in Christology, seals the mystery between the Heaven and the Earth. Rilke's Duino Elegies and H9 lderlin's poetry could be regarded as the production of these signatures. However, if we intend to break the signature, we cannot destroy the words and verses in poetry, as Mallarmé does in Coup de dès, because as soon as we destroy the signature, the mystery behind it will be dispersed. Therefore, Agamben argues that we can transform the fossilized political and linguistic …

An Examination Of The Effects Of The Brown V. Board Of Education Ruling And The Desegregation Era, Toran Langford
An Examination Of The Effects Of The Brown V. Board Of Education Ruling And The Desegregation Era, Toran Langford
The Annual Black Intersections Conference
´After adjusting to desegregation era, African-American students are at a split in the road: Where do we go? Since the beginning of time, educational systems have been created and destroyed. After the introduction of European thought at the beginning of the next millennium, European thought has flooded all academia. Ancient European thought has been replicated into contemporary white followers. Their scholarship has excluded the experience of African-Americans. Examining the philosophical, social, and historical facts forced the integration of schools, thus adding onto the beyond reach solution to Black coexistence in America. Brown v. Board of Education attempted to unify American …

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
This session will be led by a literacy educator and a science educator, who worked collaboratively to create, implement, and refine science lessons during a week-long summer program for middle grade (6th – 8th) migrant students. The presenters created culturally responsive NGSS lessons that were infused with multiple literacy strategies culminating in a creative writing, where students incorporated the vocabulary and concepts learned, using storyboarding and Google Slides.
Participants will engage in the mini-lesson and have a brief discussion on the components of the lessons based on NGSS, culturally responsive teaching, and literacy integration. Examples of student …

The Application Of Text Mining And Data Visualization Techniques To Textual Corpus Exploration, Jeffrey R. Smith Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Unstructured data in the digital universe is growing rapidly and shows no evidence of slowing anytime soon. With the acceleration of growth in digital data being generated and stored on the World Wide Web, the prospect of information overload is much more prevalent now than it has been in the past. As a preemptive analytic measure, organizations across many industries have begun implementing text mining techniques to analyze such large sources of unstructured data. Utilizing various text mining techniques such as n -gram analysis, document and term frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and topic modeling methodologies, this research seeks to develop …
The Viability Of Democratic Governance In De Facto States: A Comparative Case Study Of Iraqi Kurdistan And Syria Rojava, Chelsea Vogel
The Viability Of Democratic Governance In De Facto States: A Comparative Case Study Of Iraqi Kurdistan And Syria Rojava, Chelsea Vogel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The following comparative case study of Iraqi Kurdistan and Democratic Federation of Northern Syria-Rojava seeks to fill a gap in literature on the viability of democracy in cases of de facto statehood. There is yet to be an assessment of the potential influence of support from patron states on the degree to which democratization in de facto states is possible. This research expands upon on the argument that the decision to recognize de facto states is at least partially dependent upon the national interests of influential third party states. Syria Rojava has relied heavily on the strength of its internal …

Cultivating Cultural Intelligence For Serving International Students, Wendy Doucette, Mandy Havert, Kyunghye Kim
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
We are proposing a 50-minute panel.
Presenters: Dr. Wendy Doucette, East Tennessee State University; Ms. Mandy Havert, University of Notre Dame; Dr. Kyung Kim, Florida State University
The number of international graduate students continues to rise at American universities nationwide. While academic librarians wish to serve this student population effectively, few of us have received formal training or meaningful exposure to this sector of our student populace. This panel will provide first-person experiences from academic librarians who are actively engaging with and researching international students. Acknowledging and encouraging cultural diversity fosters the awareness of building inclusivity into graduate programming. Rather …
Illustrated Libros For Niños: The Interplay Of Translanguaging And Multimodality In Polycultural Picturebooks, Carolina Rossato De Almeida
Illustrated Libros For Niños: The Interplay Of Translanguaging And Multimodality In Polycultural Picturebooks, Carolina Rossato De Almeida
Open Access Dissertations
The interplay of translanguaging and multimodality was analyzed across 15 English-based polycultural picturebooks with Spanish insertions. The way in which translanguaging is used across the verbal features of these texts and how it is intrinsically related to multimodal elements was critically analyzed. An eclectic coding method (Saldaña, 2016) was employed in order to uncover the nature of these picturebooks while answering the research questions. Five main categories emerged from the analysis, namely: (1) picturebooks provide context clues to understand translanguaging; (2) translanguaging demonstrates the grammar of an additional language; (3) translanguaging is used to represent specific semantic fields; (4) translanguaging …

"Agglutinating" A Family: Friedrich Max MüLler And The Development Of The Turanian Language Family Theory In Nineteenth-Century European Linguistics And Other Human Sciences, Preetham Sridharan
"Agglutinating" A Family: Friedrich Max MüLler And The Development Of The Turanian Language Family Theory In Nineteenth-Century European Linguistics And Other Human Sciences, Preetham Sridharan
Dissertations and Theses
Some linguists in the nineteenth century argued for the existence of a "Turanian" family of languages in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia, claiming the common descent of a vast range of languages like Hungarian, Finnish, Turkish, Mongol, Manchu, and their relatives and dialects. Of such linguists, Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900) was an important developer and popularizer of a version of the Turanian theory across Europe, given his influence as a German-born Oxford professor in Victorian England from the 1850s onwards. Although this theory lost ground in academic linguistics from the mid twentieth century, a pan-nationalist movement pushing for the political …
Performing "Hurt" : Aging, Disability, And Popular Music As Mediated Product And Lived-Experience In Johnny Cash's Final Recordings, Adam Davidson
Performing "Hurt" : Aging, Disability, And Popular Music As Mediated Product And Lived-Experience In Johnny Cash's Final Recordings, Adam Davidson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sitting at a rarely examined intersection between aging, disability, and popular culture, this project explores how the aging body becomes the disabled body in the context of popular music. In what follows, I trouble the distinction between bodies and mediation, between lived-experience and cultural product, and I argue that the voice of the aging artist engages with his lived-experience even as he performs socially-constructed conceptions of aging and disability.
I read Johnny Cash’s 2002 cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” on American IV: The Man Comes Around as a performance of the singer’s age and disabled condition. Through pain- saturated lyrics, …
Exploring The Moderating Effect Of A Caring Work Environment On The Relationship Between Workplace Mistreatment And Nurses' Ability To Provide Patient Care, Christine M. Moffa
Exploring The Moderating Effect Of A Caring Work Environment On The Relationship Between Workplace Mistreatment And Nurses' Ability To Provide Patient Care, Christine M. Moffa
Dissertations
Workplace mistreatment (bullying, horizontal violence, and incivility) has been shown to impact nurses' work satisfaction, job turnover, and physical and mental health. However, there are limited studies that examine its effect on patient outcomes. A correlational descriptive study of 79 acute care nurses was used to test a social justice model for examining the relationship between workplace mistreatment, quantified as threats to dimensions of nurses' well-being (health, personal security, reasoning, respect, attachment, and self-determination), and nurses' ability to provide quality patient care. In addition, this study considered the moderating effect of caring work environment among co-workers on nurses' ability to …
Improving Personnel Selection Through Value Focused Thinking, Joshua D. Deehr
Improving Personnel Selection Through Value Focused Thinking, Joshua D. Deehr
Theses and Dissertations
Personnel selection has always and will continue to be a challenging endeavor for the military special operations. They want to select the best out of a number of qualified applicants. How an organization determines what makes a successful candidate and how to compare candidates against each other are some of the difficulties that top tier organizations like the special operations face. Value focused thinking (VFT) places criteria in a hierarchal structure and quantifies the values with criteria measurements, known as a decision model. The selection process can be similar to a college selecting their students. This research used college student …
Culture Et Langue : Les Séquelles De L'Esclavage Sur La Société Réunionnaise Contemporaine, Illustré Par Le Film Sac La Mort., Lucie Folio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modelling Critical Success Factors For Sustainability Initiatives In Supply Chains In Indian Context Using Grey-Dematel, Sk Mangla, S Luthra, S Jakhar, R Shankar, Cp Garg
Plymouth Business School
Sustainability assists organisations to enhance ecological, financial and societal performances of their entire supply chains. The present paper uncovers the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for effective adoption of sustainability initiatives in the supply chain in Indian context. Fifteen CSFs for the successful adoption of sustainability initiatives were identified and finalised firstly from the literature and followed by expert inputs. A methodology based on Grey-Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) was used to envisage the organisation of complex causal relationships between the recognised CSFs. ‘Government Legalisation’ has been found to be the most influential factor and ‘Community Welfare and Development’ …

The Socratic Method Of Instruction: An Experience With A Reading Comprehension Course, Rachid Acim
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Moroccan teachers of English have tried several pedagogical techniques for teaching English at a higher level. Attention to critical thinking and questioning are still lacking. The Socratic seminar has proven to be a powerful strategy for promoting these two skills. In this article, its applicability to reading comprehension and précis course is reconsidered. Instead of simply being given information, students are forced to gain knowledge through conversation and Socratic dialogue. They are taught to look at the world from different perspectives, to accept differences and maintain esteem for others. Drawing on an observational study, I unveil the pros and cons …

The Internationalization Of Teacher Education Faculty In Two Global Cities: A Case Study Of Two Universities In New York And Hong Kong, Maribel Roman
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
With the increasing integration of the world economy, nations are under growing pressure to compete internationally, resulting in a need to re-shape national education systems to train a multi-cultural workforce capable of competing globally. Consequently, the imperative to internationalize must focus on the preparation of teachers. This research study examined the internationalization of teacher education faculty through case studies of two universities: one in New York and one in Hong Kong. The main purpose is twofold: (1) to compare the extent to which, and the ways in which teacher education faculty in the two settings have internationalized the content of …

Effective Assessments For Interpreter Education Programs To Increase Pass Rates For Certification, Rosemary L. Landa, M. Diane Clark
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
In the United States, students enrolled in an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Education Program (IEP) are encouraged to achieve interpreter certification upon completion of the program. Obtaining the certification ensures employers they are hiring qualified personnel. A critical examination of assessments used by IEPs may result in formulating strategies that prepare students to pass the state-based assessments by graduation. A review of Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) and the way in which these are assessed should be undertaken in order to ensure that effective Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) are created to parallel appropriate stages of language development. Knowledge of Language …
