How Language Variety And Motivation Impact Acquisition In Adult Learners Of Portuguese, Giuseppe Formato
How Language Variety And Motivation Impact Acquisition In Adult Learners Of Portuguese, Giuseppe Formato
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
Within the demographics of New England, Portuguese is a language strikingly rich in standard and nonstandard varieties. In studying Portuguese, it is common for some students to acquire language more easily than their peers despite receiving the same linguistic input, and others display outright negative attitudes toward the language variety taught in the classroom. The dearth of research on this topic begged the research question of how language variety affects motivation in adult learners of Portuguese. Unique in its focus on heritage learners of Portuguese, this qualitative study aimed to inform and lead a more cross-cultural approach to teaching the …

Immigrants And Educational Institutions: Family And Student Perspectives Toward School And Education, Paul Naso, Kimberly Joyce-Bernard, Marcelo Juica, Frank Rothwell
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
The purpose of this session is to bring together insights from three research studies (one completed and two ongoing) concerned with documenting the experiences of immigrant populations as they interact with U.S. educational institutions. The session is an opportunity to consider the common and distinct aspects of three qualitative research studies: an inquiry into native Spanish-speaking parents’ experiences regarding their children education; a narrative analysis of Francophone African-born adult family members’ accounts of their children’s language and literacy development at home and in early childhood programs; and a study to identify the obstacles and challenges of undocumented students enrolled in …

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This workshop is intended for K-12 Teachers and Leaders. The topic is on Compassionate Leadership and Integrating the LD Student. The workshop's content is predicated on the research and study of Richard Lavoie's work with linguistically & phonologically challenged students, and their difficulty developing social identities among the general population within public schools. In particular, this workshop will present Lavoie's findings in his two authored works "FAT CITY: Frustration, Anxiety, and Tension in the LD Student" and "Last One Picked, First One Picked On" with support from the work of Lavoie's colleague, Charlie Applestein, MSW, and his recently published book, …

Metacognition At The Program For The Advancement Of Learning, Philip Hulbig
Metacognition At The Program For The Advancement Of Learning, Philip Hulbig
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This is a pilot study of metacognition, and how it is defined and utilized by practitioners at Curry College's Program for the Advancement of Learning (PAL) in Milton, Massachusetts. Presently there are several distinct approaches to metacognitive practice in education, pulling from different traditions. Examples are Self Regulated Learning Theory (Bandura, 1997, Zimmerman & Schunk, 2001), which focuses on behavioral problem-solving strategies and their uses, psycho-dynamic developmental approaches (Kegan, 1996), the self-talk approaches of Mindset Theory (Dweck, 2008), dialectic approaches (Montgomery & Baxter 1998) of philosophical traditions (Popper, 1945), and contemplative mindfulness approaches (Gautam, 1999). Educationally these approaches to metacognition …
Privileged Leadership: Teaching English Learners With Fixed Mindsets, Alexandra Lituchy
Privileged Leadership: Teaching English Learners With Fixed Mindsets, Alexandra Lituchy
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
Research was conducted over a hundred hours at a nearby public school to observe the growth or fixed mindset language of English learners as compared to native English speakers in the second grade. Observations were also made of the English learner’s teacher’s mindset language. Existing research proves that any student with a fixed mindset have poorer academic performances. Yet, very little research has been done on if the same is true for English learners specifically. Based on the research conducted, English learners are more likely to use fixed mindset language than native English speakers. English learners also demonstrate a fixed …

The Heart Of An Officer—Joint, Interagency, And International Operations And Navy Career Development, James Stavridis, Mark Hagerott
Naval War College Review
The Navy’s current system for developing Unrestricted Line officers is stretched to the breaking point. External realities and circumstances unique to the Cold War produced the existing system. Changed conditions now necessitate reform and point to a comprehensive “three track” system for line officers.

A Cooperative Strategy For 21st Century Seapower, James T. Conway, Gary Roughead, Thad W. Allen
Naval War College Review
A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower” represents an historical first. Never before have the maritime forces of the United States—the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard—come together to create a unified maritime strategy. This strategy stresses an approach that integrates seapower with other elements of national power, as well as those of our friends and allies. It describes how seapower will be applied around the world to protect our way of life, as we join with other like-minded nations to protect and sustain the global, inter-connected system through which we prosper.

Perceptual Proficiency Ratings Of Obstruent Productions In L2 Learners Of English As A Function Of Speech Task Type, Word Position, And Listener Expertise, Rachel Mcpherson Zitting
Perceptual Proficiency Ratings Of Obstruent Productions In L2 Learners Of English As A Function Of Speech Task Type, Word Position, And Listener Expertise, Rachel Mcpherson Zitting
Theses and Dissertations
Second language (L2) learners of English must learn to produce English phonemes, words, and sentences. These L2 learners make many errors when learning English; they may change the place or manner of articulation, insert vowels, or delete consonants. Obstruent sounds, such as fricatives, affricates, and stops, can be especially difficult for L2 learners. This study analyzed native English speakers’ perception of the quality of obstruents produced by native Mandarin Chinese and Korean speakers. Target words containing obstruents had been produced in three different tasks: in a carrier phrase, in a paragraph, and in a spontaneous speech sample. Obstruents were produced …

Effectiveness Of Reading Intervention Program Types In Increasing Comprehension For Intermediate School Students, Donna Elizabeth Weikert
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
A quasi-experimental design investigated the effectiveness of three reading intervention types in increasing reading comprehension, both explicit and implicit, using a sample of 78 students, approximately 17% of the population of third through fifth grades at a single-school, rural, K-12, Central Texas school district with an enrollment of approximately 450. Data was gathered using the Development Reading Assessment (DRA2) and the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI-5), conducted during the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year. Reading intervention types included pull-out in a small group using part-to-whole language strategies, a computer-based reading intervention type, and an integrated reading intervention type using …

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the influence of the heritage language on the cultural integration of 10 second-generation Hispanic adolescents, ages 15-19. Data were collected using in-depth interviews that asked participants to share their experiences with their heritage language, and in what situations they found themselves feeling more Hispanic, more American, and more bicultural, when speaking their heritage language. Participants also shared the formal course of language study they chose, such as Spanish, Heritage Spanish, and AP Spanish Language, why they chose it, and how that choice influenced their perceptions of the heritage language and their cultural integration. Berry’s (2005) Acculturation …

The Readers Constructed By Shakespeare Anthologies And Pedagogical Scholarship, Andrea Berns
The Readers Constructed By Shakespeare Anthologies And Pedagogical Scholarship, Andrea Berns
Theses and Dissertations
In my graduate thesis, I determine that modern Shakespeare anthologies provide features for an audience with specific learning needs that may not be representative of the students currently enrolled in undergraduate classrooms who are reading these anthologies. On the other hand, scholars of Shakespeare pedagogy also depict readers with certain learning needs their research, the results of which may have been influenced by bias and, therefore, also may not be representative of the “real” reader of Shakespeare. To determine where the two “constructed” readers depicted in modern Shakespeare anthologies and in pedagogical research overlap and where they diverge, I will …

Instructors’ Perceptions Of Postsecondary Classes Of Students With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder Enrolled In Transition Programs, Lisa Kemp
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Throughout the United States, many school districts offer transition program services for students with disabilities. Some of the transition services include students who are learning social, academic, and vocational skills to live independently. Some students who are enrolled in transition programs may have High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HASD) and could be looking for postsecondary classes while enrolled in transition programs. The purpose of this intrinsic case study is to explore how instructors perceive the postsecondary classes of students with HASD while enrolled in transition programs. Three research questions that guided this intrinsic case study: (a) How do instructors perceive …

Alternating Treatments For Idiom Interpretation By Children With Specific Language Impairments, Monique S. Kaye
Alternating Treatments For Idiom Interpretation By Children With Specific Language Impairments, Monique S. Kaye
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of two idiom interventions by students with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Idioms are linguistic expressions that have figurative meanings other than their literal interpretation. There is a strong correlation between idiom interpretation and academic success (Nippold & Martin, 1989). Students are exposed to idioms in media, in school, literature, and in daily interactions with peers and adults (Nippold, Moran, & Schwarz, 2001).Method: Three school-aged students (n=3) with SLI ages 11;9–13;8 (mean age = 12;8) were provided a language intervention for idioms embedded in stories with pictures (n=10) …

Although there is increasing interest in how learning to become a researching professional is understood by students undertaking a professional doctorate of education (EdD), the topic remains under-researched and under-theorized. In this article, we provide a set of theorizations, starting with the purpose and distinctiveness of the professional doctorate and the researching professional identity as this is understood by students and staff participating in the EdD programme in one university in the United Kingdom (UK). This is followed by a retheorization of the researching professional as they develop a reflexive disposition to connect the workplace and the university as the …

International Muslim Students Within A Globalized Educational Context, Noha Ghali
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
While previous research has revealed and documented the difficulties that international students and international Muslim students face when studying abroad, it fails to critically study and discuss the students’ perception of reasons behind these difficulties. The main aim of this study is to focus on international Muslim students and explore their social and academic experiences and challenges in a globalized educational context. Another aim is to investigate international Muslim students’ perceived reasons behind the challenges they meet, and how they negotiate such challenges. The study reviews the literature on international Muslim students in western higher education to highlight the gap …

Smart Headgear For Display Of Transcribed Or Translated Speech, Sara Basson, Dimitri Kanevsky
Defensive Publications Series
Natural language translation and transcription technologies can now enable x real-time conversation between speakers of mutually unintelligible languages. Such technologies also assist hearing-impaired speakers by providing real-time transcription. Currently, the transcribed or translated speech is typically displayed on a screen that is away from the speaker, e.g., on a hand-held device. Such type of display is not conducive to maintaining the eye-to-eye contact necessary for natural conversation. The techniques of this disclosure describe smart headgear that integrates a display capable of streaming transcribed or translated speech to a listener. The smart headgear integrates or interoperates with natural language processing hardware, …
