Development And Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention Regarding Advance Directives In A Native American Population, Donna Alford
Development And Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention Regarding Advance Directives In A Native American Population, Donna Alford
Doctoral Projects
ABSTRACT
The Patient Self-Determination Act of December 1991 directs healthcare facilities to inform patients regarding their right to make decisions about their healthcare, their right to refuse care, and their right to designate a healthcare surrogate. Culturally diverse populations often do not complete advance directives as often as other populations. The purpose of this project was to determine if an educational intervention, using a culturally appropriate video and written materials, improves understanding about advance directives among a Choctaw Native American population. The project used feedback from tribal members to evaluate the effectiveness of this educational intervention and modify it so …
Cultivating Creation: Exploring Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of Native Song, Sara Moncada
Cultivating Creation: Exploring Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of Native Song, Sara Moncada
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Humanities scholarship, the result of millennia of deep reflection on the human condition, informs the practices and principles that structure the way we approach our investigation of the human experience. As we consider the ways in which the humanities canon shapes the relationship of what we include as “knowledge” and how we value it, the continued exploration of how meaning and value are perceived in traditional knowledge systems and their contributions to our current models of thinking and process is vital. Through an investigation of relationships between Native song and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), I explore the importance of Native …

Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore parents’ perceptions of their experiences engaging in their gifted children’s education in Saudi Arabia. Qualitative research design was utilized, and a phenomenological approach was employed to answer the research questions. Ten Saudi parents were interviewed to explore their engagement in the education of their gifted children. Following thematic analysis, four themes emerged regarding the roles parents played in the engagement of their gifted children’s education. These roles were: Guiding their Gifted Children, Challenging their Gifted Children, Encouraging their Gifted Children, and Advocating for their Gifted Children. Additionally, five themes emerged regarding …
The Father Of Pan‐Africanism: Rev. Edward Wilmot Blyden, Rafi Rahman
The Father Of Pan‐Africanism: Rev. Edward Wilmot Blyden, Rafi Rahman
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Rev. Edward Wilmot Blyden was born in the Virgin Islands, was ordained a Presbyterian minister, and became a leader in the Pan- Africanism movement. This paper argues that Rev. Blyden is an important figure within contemporary Black Church Studies because of his sui generis posture towards Islam, Pan-Africanism, and Black Nationalism. The felicitous Pan-African accolades attributed to Rev. Blyden by the Black Church are a result of his novel Afro-centric and inclusive interfaith hermeneutical posture and writings from the period of Reconstruction through the Progressive Era. Rev. Blyden’s acceptance of non-Christian faith traditions within a Pan-African context supported and, more …
Italian American Literature And Food: A Match Made In The Kitchen A Handbook, Monica Marchi
Italian American Literature And Food: A Match Made In The Kitchen A Handbook, Monica Marchi
English Dissertations - Archive
Food is a recurrent theme in Italian American literature and authors have used it to highlight the importance of family, women, and the community at large and to teach about Italian customs to the U.S. public. Oftentimes, for the older Italian immigrants, food triggers fond memories of the Old country, while, for the younger generations, it might cause shame that leads to clashes with the older generations. Characters use food as a tool to express power and, later, status and to communicate. Food also defines relationships, gives an identity to the Italian immigrants on foreign soil, and allows them to …

Patient safety is a key aspect for good consumer care. When an individual is hospitalized or receives medication the family wants the patient safety to be above all factors. For instance, a drug can do both either cure the disease or perhaps, give rise to an adverse event. A drug administered for an indicated condition has substantial power to reduce or cure a disease and further to prevent it from happening again in the future but at the risk of side effects. At present, there are several methods in patient safety and in particular in the area of signal detection …

Social media platforms have been a major part of our daily lives. But with the freedom of expression there is no way one can check whether the posts/tweets/expressions are classified on which polarity. Since Twitter is one of the biggest social platforms for microblogging, hence the experiment was done on this platform. There are several topics that are popular over the internet like sports, politics, finance, technology are chosen as the source of the experiment. These tweets were collected over a span of time for more than 2 months via a cron job. Every tweet can be divided into three …

A Staring Contest With The Self: Karl Ove Knausgaard, Linguistic Inquiry And Word Count, And Explanatory Style, Colton Tyler Royle
English Theses - Archive
Shame as an emotional response in the late 2010s has been discussed in both high and low sectors, from a high level of shame with social media use in high school classrooms, to the lack of shame by the president of the United States. My thesis addresses this question by analyzing Karl Ove Knausgaard’s two autobiographical works, My Struggle and his Seasonal Quartet. Readers, critics, and Knausgaard himself have described his work as a focus on the shameful moments of his life. Using positive psychology’s term “explanatory style,” coined by Martin E.P. Seligman, I do a structural reading of explicit …

While rhetoric as a field of study has existed for several millennia, social media can prove to be a difficult medium to analyze rhetorically. This thesis examines some traditional elements of rhetoric, including the rhetorical triangle as well as the canons of rhetoric, and weaves them together with the narrative paradigm theory, as posited by Walter Fisher in his 1987 book Human Communication as Narration: Toward a Philosophy or Reason, Value, and Action. Together, rhetoric and the narrative paradigm provide some useful tools for analyzing the world of social media, helping users to more accurately ascertain the veracity of posting; …

Self-Monitoring Checklists: A Tool For Connecting Training To Practice, M. Courtney Hughes, Emaley B. Mcculloch, Elise G. Valdes
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
A limitation of training is the gap between the knowledge learned in training and the behavior put into practice. Skills checklists are helpful for reducing errors and increasing adherence to safety and may be one tool useful for bridging that gap. There is little research examining the role of skills checklists with self-reflection completed independently, or “self-monitoring checklists,” for increasing knowledge and improving skills in areas requiring attentional behavior in healthcare. Two randomized controlled studies incorporated self-monitoring checklists along with online training in cultural competence and integrated care, respectively, for health professionals. At least ninety percent of participants in both …

Between The Facts And Norms Of Police Violence: Using Discourse Models To Improve Deliberations Around Law Enforcement, Franciska Coleman
Between The Facts And Norms Of Police Violence: Using Discourse Models To Improve Deliberations Around Law Enforcement, Franciska Coleman
Hofstra Law Review
Police violence and protests of police violence have become a common feature of today's news cycles and have led to widespread critique and distrust of the law enforcement apparatus and police practice. States and municipalities have responded to the delegitimization of police practice with community-police dialogues. This Article argues that such dialogues can only restore the legitimacy of the police practice if they are deliberative in the Habermasian sense and also address the entrenched power asymmetries between communities and the police. This Article uses the community listening sessions of the Minnesota Governor's Council on Law Enforcement and Community Relations to …
Discretionary Trusts: An Update, Richard C. Ausness
Discretionary Trusts: An Update, Richard C. Ausness
ACTEC Law Journal
In the past, settlors tended to limit a trustee's discretion by setting forth a specific formula for the distribution of trust assets. Nowadays, however, settlors often prefer to vest more discretion in their trustees. This is partly due to the fact that beneficiaries tend to live longer and, therefore, trusts inevitably last longer, thereby requiring trustees to respond to changing conditions. In addition, settlors often believe that vesting increased discretion on the part of trustees will discourage beneficiaries from bringing expensive and disruptive challenges to their decisions.
Nevertheless, the trend toward increased discretion is not without its problems. First of …

Online product reviews are important factors of consumers' purchase decisions. They invade more and more spheres of our life, we have reviews on books, electronics, groceries, entertainments, restaurants, travel experiences, etc. More than 90 percent of consumers read online reviews before they purchase products as reported by various consumers surveys. This observation suggests that product review information enhances consumer experience and helps them to make better-informed purchase decisions. There is an enormous amount of online reviews posted on e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon, Apple, Yelp, TripAdvisor. Solo Piano Works By Ke-Chia Chen: To An Isolated Island And Treasure Box, Stephanie Yu
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Since the twentieth century, it has become increasingly popular for composers to combine traditional folk materials and contemporary compositional techniques. Taiwanese composer Ke-Chia Chen is among these composers who choose to bridge their historical and cultural past with modern compositional methods. To An Isolated Island (2004) and Treasure Box (2010) represent, to date, the mature works for solo piano of Ke-Chia Chen, and are the main focus of this document.
This study details Chen’s employment of various compositional approaches in these works, and provides a thorough analysis of each piece. To An Isolated Island is the first piano piece Ke-Chia …

Q: What happens when the good, old-fashioned virtues of Liberal Arts education, e.g. "Critical Thinking," enter the age of big data?
A: We teach "Critical Search," a model process for approaching big data research. Critical Search models a way of engaging humanities question, textuality, secondary literature, data, and tools. It is suitable to both the statistician who wishes to make meaning from the past as well as the traditional humanist who browses library catalogs through keywords.
This article presents the concept of "critical search" and offers an exposition of its application to a search for the history of eviction in …

The social media platform Twitter has become President Donald Trump’s communication channel of choice, possibly contributing to his unexpected win of the presidency. This research examines the impact of Trump's distinctive tweeting style on the discourse of other U.S. politicians. Specifically, this study examines ten senators’ tweets from the Obama era and the Trump era to see if other politicians are currently adopting President Trump’s tweeting style. A simple random sample of tweets from the senators were taken from the two eras. The results showed some changes in the types of posts senators made. The results also revealed that Democrats' …

The Emperor's New Clothes: How The New Atheists Are Reminding The Humanities Of Their Place And Purpose In Society., David Ira Buckner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will examine the social and intellectual impact of the so-called “New Atheism” as evidenced by the writings and public careers of its four principal protagonists: evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, philosopher Daniel Dennett, journalist Christopher Hitchens, and neuroscientist Sam Harris. I will argue that the New Atheists together provide an account of reality philosophically superior to that of theism, including those superficially sophisticated variations espoused in the writings of scholars William Lane Craig, John Lennox, Allister McGrath, Alvin Plantinga, etc. Yet, even if this were not so, I would still contend that the accessible, informative, and provocative style of …

Transcending The Panels: Varieties Of Experience And Selfhood In Comics., Will D. Simpson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I argue that the typical formal features of American comics over the past century have influenced the types of narrative content that tend to be communicated by said medium. I argue that the types of reader experiences that are afforded by the comics form, in part, shape the types of stories told through comics. The experiences that result from the ways we engage perceptually, cognitively, emotionally, and conceptually with comics imply a certain view of selfhood that is potentially subversive in the context of American cultural religiosity and spirituality. The formal features of comics, and the resulting …

How God Writes History: A Gramscian Analysis Of Religion And Nature In The Writings, Life, And Legacy Of John Muir, Daniel R. Jones
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Representations of John Muir, America’s most famous environmentalist, and religion have been highly variegated. A mythological figure of American environmental politics, Muir and his legacy have been an ideological apparatus for presidents, environmentalists, and naturalists performing acts of identification for themselves and their country. Furthermore, religion and environmental scholars have often used Muir as a case study for what they call “nature religion.” Lost in this myth-making labor are the politics of sacred spaces and national discourse. Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci developed the concept of common sense and the intellectual, which this thesis uses to analyze John Muir’s poetics …
